UofL rallied from a 21-1 deficit, but couldn t sustain the lead late in the game. Sara Hammond had a game-high 19 points. Miami (15-4) has won seven of its last eight, posting a victory over Virginia on Jan. 21. The Cardinals leader, who boasts a record (.733), is the winningest coach in program history. He has the most 20-win seasons in school history with six. Under head coach Jeff Walz, UofL boasts a mark (.714) in regular-season games following a loss and is 6-1 following elimination in the conference tournament. The team went 7-0 in regularseason play after a loss. With its win against Virginia on Jan. 18, UofL logged its 100th win at home under head coach Jeff Walz. The Cardinals are (.840) between Freedom Hall and the KFC Yum! Center under Walz. Sara Hammond needs just two more rebounds to take over 10th on the school s career rebounding list. The senior has 696 to date, and her second rebound would push her past Valerie Owens ( ). Louisville has assisted on 59.3 percent of its field goals this season. The Cardinals have recorded 20 or more assists eight times and are 10th in the NCAA at 17.8 assists per game. Renee Jones had a team-high 17 points, and Troya Landrum had eight points and 11 rebounds for Louisville, which shot 43.8 percent for the game and outrebounded Miami Frances Savage led Miami with 20 points. <Comeback Cardinals - For two-straight games, Louisville trailed by double digits in the second half before mounting two comebacks on the road to eventually move to 3-0 in ACC play. On Jan. 4, Louisville locked down Pittsburgh in the final 10 minutes of regulation to win The Cardinals cut the deficit to three and then limited the Panthers to nine points on 3-of-15 shooting. UofL went on an 18-9 run in that span, while Pittsburgh had five turnovers and two assists and went scoreless over the final 3:06. A week later, Louisville trailed Wake Forest by as much as 12 before using an 8-0 run and then a 10-run to climb back into the game. The Cardinals defense, again, iced its opponent, as Wake Forest went 3:48 without a basket late in the period. UofL s 14 points in the final six minutes sealed a win. <17-2 Start - For the fourth time in program history, the third time under head coach Jeff Walz, Louisville has rolled to at least a 17-2 start. Louisville <Active Hands on Defense - Louisville is fourth in the ACC with 201 steals this year, an average of 10.6 per contest (third in the league). Nationally, the Cardinals rank 45th in the category. Jude Schimmel (2nd), Bria Smith (4th), and Mariya Moore (t-15th) rank in the top 15 in the ACC in steals per game. The Cardinals have double-digit thefts in 13 of 19 games this season. Louisville opened the campaign with 16 steals against IUPUI, with six coming from Jude Schimmel - the most in an opener since Bria Smith had six against Missouri State (Nov. 13, 2011). Louisville matched its season high with 16 steals in the victory over Belmont. <Tracking RPI - Though it s only the midway point in the year, the Cardinals success is attracting points from the computers. In the latest NCAA Women s Basketball RPI (Jan. 23), Louisville moved to No. 11, the second-highest rating of any team in the ACC. Of the teams in the top 15, Louisville is tied with South Carolina for the most road wins (6). As a conference, the ACC boasts five total schools in the top 25. <January Joy - Louisville boasts a (.672) record in the month of January under head coach Jeff Walz. The Cardinals are in the top 15 in six areas (won-lost percentage, scoring margin, field-goal percentage, assists per game, assist/turnover ratio, and turnover margin). UofL ranks just outside the top 15 in scoring offense, averaging 77.9 points for No. 16 nationally. Individually, Mariya Moore is 48th nationally in assist/turnover ratio (2.09). <First-Half Boom - Louisville has delivered the boom to opponents during the first half this season. The Cardinals, averaging a point margin heading into halftime, are shooting 45.7 percent from the floor that includes a 35-percent clip from long range. The Cardinals total appearances in the eight-year timeframe ranks 13th among all NCAA Division I programs, and UofL has been ranked among the top 25 for 70-straight weeks. Last year, Louisville debuted at No. 5 in the AP preseason poll and reached as high as third from Feb. 17-March 10. The Cardinals finished the campaign fourth in the AP Poll, their highest final ranking in program history. Louisville, which finished fifth in the final ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, maintained a top-10 ranking throughout the year. <Success in the KFC Yum! UofL grabbed 23 offensive rebounds in victories over Grand Canyon (Dec. 18) and Wake Forest (Jan. 11), the most since it had 29 on Nov. 9, 2013, against Loyola-Chicago. The Cardinals have collected at least 15 offensive rebounds in 11 games this season. The 299 offensive rebounds have translated into 294 second-chance points, an average of 15.5 per game. Conversely, UofL is limiting opponents to just 8.8 second-chance points. Louisville has held 12 opponents to 10 or fewer second-chance points in a game. <New Kids on the Block - After competing in two different conferences in the last two years, Louisville is beginning its inaugural season as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Louisville participated in the BIG EAST from before joining the American Athletic Conference for one season. Years Independent Kentucky Women s Intercollegiate Metro Conference USA BIG EAST American Athletic Atlantic Coast conference the UofL women s basketball program has been a part of since becoming an intercollegiate sport in <Dynamic Freshmen Duo - Freshmen Mariya Moore and Myisha Hines-Allen have been catalysts to Louisville s success this year. Hines-Allen (12.0 ppg) has scored in double digits in 12 games, while Moore (13.4) has reached that figure 15 times. Hines-Allen began her career with double-digit points in her first 10 games. The last time a freshman totaled double-figure points in consecutive games to start their career was 2003, when Jazz Covington produced 14 straight. <Dishing it Out - Louisville s squad is showing signs as one of the best passing teams in recent history. The Cardinals 17.8 assists total - average is second in the ACC and 10th nationally. While early, UofL s average is second highest in program history, only trailing the squad s 18.8 average (finished with 582 assists through 31 games). <Maintaining Possession - Louisville, which is averaging 13.9 turnovers per game, tied the school record when it had just five turnovers against Virginia on Jan. 18. Earlier in the year, the Cardinals lost the ball just six times in the victory against Lafayette. The school record for fewest turnovers in a game is five, first accomplished against Butler on Dec. 3, Louisville boasts the second-best turnover margin in the ACC (+6.8) and eighth best in the NCAA. Louisville s two fewest turnover totals (5 vs. Virginia; 7 vs. Wake Forest) in ACC play this year rank Nos. 1 and 2 for fewest by a team in league play. HEAD COACH JEFF WALZ Head coach Jeff Walz, in his eighth season as a head coach, has compiled a (.733) record as the Cardinals leader. He has led Louisville to five NCAA Sweet 16 appearances, two of which culminated with NCAA runner-up finishes (2009, 2013). Walz, who is averaging nearly 26 wins per season, became the winningest coach in program history in He also has the most 20-win seasons in school history (6) and the top-three entries for most victories in a season (34 in ; 33 in ; and 29 in ). Hired on March 27, 2007, the Bluegrass State native took the program to its first NCAA Sweet 16 and it culminated with Louisville earning the No. 12 ranking in the final ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. For his efforts, Walz was named the WBCA Maggie Dixon Rookie Coach of the Year. Prior to taking the reins at Louisville, Walz spent time on four other coaching staffs: Western Kentucky ( ), Nebraska ( ), Minnesota ( ), and Maryland ( ). The coaching staff received commitments from student-athletes from five different states: Asia Durr, a 5-foot-10 point guard from St. Pius X Catholic High in Douglasville, Ga; Taja Cole, a 5-foot-7 point guard from Lloyd C. A Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 3A all-state selection in 2014, she guided La Vega to a 35-0 record that year and the school s first state title. Sara Hammond was selected for the U.S. 3x3 World Championship Team, and the senior helped the group to a 9-0 record and a gold medal in Moscow on June 8. The U.S. won six-consecutive games by double-digit points. Just a little over two months later, Walz - serving as an assistant coach - and incoming freshman Mariya Moore guided the U.S. U-18 Women s National Team to a 5-0 mark in Colorado and USA Basketball s seventh-consecutive gold medal in the FIBA Americas U-18 Championship. <A Brief Look Back at The Cardinals reached the NCAA Elite Eight last year, advancing to at least the regional semifinal for the fifth time under head coach Jeff Walz.
