4 PHOENIX MERCURY NEWS AND NOTES DT 8K: Already the WNBA's all-time leader in scoring and three-point field goals, Diana Taurasi reached yet another scoring milestone on June 5, 2018 in New York, becoming the only player in WNBA history to reach 8,000 career points. LEAGUE OF HER OWN: In the Mercury's season opener against the Dallas Wings on Friday, May 18, 2018, Diana Taurasi became the first and only WNBA player in history to reach 1,000 career made three-pointers. Additionally, having done so in her 399th career game, Taurasi joined Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Damian Lillard as the only players in WNBA/NBA history to reach 1,000 career three-pointers in 400 games or less. BACK IN THE DESERT: Returning to the desert this summer is Briann January, who the Mercury acquired from Indiana in a trade that sent the 8th overall pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft to the Fever. While this will be January's first season with the Mercury, it won't be her first rodeo in Phoenix, as the former WNBA Champion player her college basketball just up the road at Arizona State University. January recently served as an assistant coach on the women's basketball staff during the season. MOMS IN THE DESERT: This season the Mercury feature four players on its roster who are moms, as well as two on the coaching staff. Diana Taurasi, Sancho Lyttle, Leilani Mitchell and DeWanna Bonner (had twins) are all recent moms, while assistant coach Julie Hairgrove and head coach Sandy Brondello have a bit more experience. 9 Sandy Brondello FIFTH SEASON AS HEAD COACH OF PHOENIX HEAD COACH Veteran WNBA player, coach and former Australian Olympian Sandy Brondello (braun-dell-oh) was named the ninth head coach in franchise history on November 15, Brondello also serves as the team s vice president of player personnel. On October 13, 2016, the Mercury signed Brondello to a multi-year contract extension. Known for her intense preparation for each opponent, Brondello has compiled an overall regular season record of in her fifth season with the Mercury, ranking her as the all-time leader in wins as a Mercury coach. Additionally, Brondello has compiled a 13-9 postseason record at the helm of the Mercury, ranking her as the winningest coach in franchise history in the postseason. She was named the 2014 WNBA Coach of the Year marking the first time a Mercury coach picked up the honor. She led the team to a WNBA regular season-record 29 wins and capped the season with a WNBA Championship. An 13-year veteran of the WNBA coaching ranks, Brondello has been affiliated with the league for 19 of the league s 22 seasons, including her time as a player. A proven winner internationally and in the WNBA, her 13 total years as an assistant coach and head coach have featured 10 playoff appearances, including seven semifinals round berths (formerly conference finals), the 2014 WNBA Championship and a spot in the 2008 WNBA Finals. Brondello joins the Mercury after serving as lead assistant coach for the Los Angeles Sparks ( ) under 2012 WNBA Coach of the Year Carol Ross. Brondello led the San Antonio Silver Stars to a 2010 playoff berth in her lone season at the helm following five seasons on the Silver Stars bench as an assistant under Dan Hughes ( ), the third-winningest coach in league history.
