Sectin: 1 - Intrductin 1-1: Hw t Use this Manual This manual is supplied t assist yu in installing, maintaining and servicing NERCON LIVE DRUM SPIRALS. It is essential fr safe and efficient peratin that the infrmatin and guidelines presented here are prperly understd and implemented. Fllwing is a brief descriptin f the infrmatin cntained in each sectin: 1. Intrductin: Basic infrmatin abut the manual and the system and trademarks/servicemarks (if any) used in the manual. 2. Safety: Safety precautins fr Live Drum Spiral peratin and maintenance. 3. Installatin: Mechanical and Electrical infrmatin abut the installatin f the Live Drum Spiral. 5. Peridic Inspectin Guide: One f the mst imprtant factrs in the verall cst effectiveness f yur Live Drum Spiral is the peridic inspectin; that is, eliminating the cause f ptential truble befre the truble ccurs. This cncept makes it pssible t perfrm maintenance and repair peratins n a predetermined schedule rather than accrding t chance. Implementing a peridic inspectin prgram n yur NERCON equipment serves t increase its dependability, lngevity, and efficiency, all f which add up t lwer perating csts. 6. Trubleshting: Despite the best perating techniques and preventive maintenance prgram, machines d smetimes fail. This sectin cntains suggested step-by-step methds t aid in detecting the cause r causes f these failures. Observe the equipment when it is functining prperly in rder t detect failure and/r t perfrm maintenance r adjustment n the equipment. 1-2: Integratin! The live drum spiral is designed t raise r lwer prduct withut accumulatin. Therefr care must be taken t prevent the unintended accumulatin f prduct n the unit. If the equipment directly dwnstream f the spiral is n lnger taking prduct away, the spiral must be stpped r paused. Nercn recmmends using a pht eye t detect any jams n the cnveyr as well as mnitring the drive signal f the dwnstream equipment. Likewise the same care must be taken with the upstream equipment as t nt verlad the infeed f the spiral. If the spiral belt is stpped r pauses, the infeed equipment must als stp. The infeed equipment shuld nt be allwed t restart until the spiral has reached its nrmal perating speed.! It is recmmended that the belt speed f the spiral run at the same speed as the infeed and discharge equipment. It is nt recmmended t be used t pull a gap between prducts. Fr this reasn cnsideratin must be given t the prduct shape and spacing as it is fed int the spiral. If the prducts are t clse they will tuch each ther as the belt cllapses arund the drum, causing skewed r pssibly damaged prducts. 1-3: Operatinal Cncepts! The live drum spiral is pwered by 2 mtrs. One t drive the drum and ne t drive the belt.! The drum rtates faster than the inside edge f the belt. This is referred t as the "Overdrive" r "Overtravel" f the drum.! This verdrive prvides the majrity f driving frce fr the belt via frictin between the belt edge and the drum surface. Fr this reasn sme amunt f frictin is desired n the belt and n lubricants shuld be applied t either the belt r surface f the drum.! The magnitude f verdrive greatly affects the perfrmance f the belt. See trubleshting sectin 6-1 fr imprper verdrive characteristics.! Nte: During initial break in perid, adjustments t the amunt f vertravel are cmmn. 600 S. Cmmercial Street Neenah, WI PH:

Sectin: 2 - Safety 2-1: General Safety Nte: The safety prcedures/plicies listed in this chapter are nt intended t address fire-related cnsideratins. Yur system must cmply with any applicable natinal, state, and lcal cdes. Fllw safety precautins fr industrial wrk at all times. With any piece f industrial equipment, cnditins exist that might cause injury t yu r yur c-wrkers. Because it is nt pssible t describe each ptentially hazardus situatin that might develp, yu must be alert at all times fr unsafe cnditins. T avid injury, use maximum pssible care and cmmn sense and adhere t all safety standards. Take special care while maintaining and inspecting electrical equipment and devices. All persnnel wrking n r arund the system shuld be aware f, and adhere t, all CAUTION, DANGER, and WARNING signs. These signs are psted t reduce the risk f injury t all persnnel. Maintain signs in a legible cnditin. Cntact yur supervisr t pst additinal safety signs if yu feel they are necessary. Fllw these general safety rules, as well as specific regulatins and guidelines listed in this publicatin: 2-2: Mechanical Safety Guidelines! D nt tuch mving parts.! D nt walk, ride r climb n the belt.! D nt perate the live drum spiral with the prtective guards remved r with persnnel inside a custmer defined safety perimeter.! Keep jewelry, clthing, hair, etc., away frm any and all mving parts.! Knw the lcatin and functin f all start/stp devices and keep thse devices free frm bstructin.! Clear all persnnel frm the equipment befre starting.! D nt attempt t clear prduct jams while the spiral is running.! Allw nly trained and authrized persnnel t maintain r repair the spiral.! D nt lad the spiral beynd the specified design limits.! D nt attempt t make repairs t the spiral while it is running! D nt mdify equipment withut checking with the manufacturer.! D nt perate r perfrm maintenance n the equipment when taking any type f drug r sedative, r when ver fatigued r under the influence f alchl.! D nt perate the spiral if any part is damaged r imprperly installed.! Be sure that all replacement parts are interchangeable and f equal quality as riginal parts supplied. When the spiral is stpped fr maintenance r repair purpses, yu must lck ut r tag ut the starting devices, prime mvers, r pwered accessries in accrdance with a frmalized prcedure designed t prtect everyne invlved against an unexpected restart. Als, alert all persnnel t the hazard f stred energy, which can exist after the pwer surce is lcked ut. Fr additinal infrmatin, refer t the latest issue f ANSI Z , American Natinal Standard fr Persnnel Prtectin - Lckut/Tagut f Energy Surces - Minimum Safety Requirements. Als, OSHA 29CRF Part "Cntrl f Hazardus Energy surces (Lckut/Tagut)", which includes requirements fr release f stred energy 2-3: Electrical Safety Guidelines When an equipment prblem ccurs, the first pririty is t ensure that pwer is discnnected frm the affected area, as well as frm the cntrl panel where trubleshting and repairs are perfrmed. Once yu verify that pwer is lcked ut, make sure yu infrm ther persnnel in the area f the situatin s they d nt unexpectedly restre pwer. After yu infrm yur c-wrkers, recheck the pwer supply t ensure that pwer is discnnected in the affected cntrl panel. Remve fuses nly with insulated fuse pullers and check terminal strips fr current-carrying wires. Befre yu perfrm any repairs with an expsed cnductr r terminal, use an apprved vltmeter t check fr cntinuity t grund and cntinuity between ther current-carrying cnductrs. 600 S. Cmmercial Street Neenah, WI PH:

When yu perfrm any kind f maintenance r repair invlving electrical cmpnents, fllw the guidelines listed belw:! NEVER reset a circuit breaker r replace an pen fuse befre determining and crrecting the cause f the circuit interruptin.! NEVER bypass r use a jumper t replace any limit switch, fuse, circuit breaker, r ther circuit prtectin r safety device.! NEVER replace an pen fuse with anther that is nt rated at the prper current and vltage. Always duble check crrect fuse specificatins rather than replace the pen fuse with ne f the same current and vltage rating.! NEVER rest tls n mtrs, transfrmers, terminal strips, r ther cntrl panel r electrical cmpnents. All tls used shuld be kept in a tl bx r puch.! NEVER restre pwer r restart equipment befre verifying that all tls, spare parts, etc., are remved frm the wrk area and are safely stred.! NEVER restre pwer r restart equipment befre verifying that ALL persnnel are aware f the cnditin and are safely clear f the equipment.! ALWAYS replace any safety devices r guards remved during maintenance r repair befre yu restre pwer r restart equipment.! ALWAYS use extreme cautin and fllw recmmended safety prcedures while yu perfrm any electrical inspectin r maintenance peratins 2-3.1: Electrical Cde All electrical installatins and wiring must cnfrm t the Natinal Electrical Cde (Article 670 and ther applicable articles) published by the Natinal Fire Prtectin Assciatin and apprved by the American Natinal Standards Institute, Inc : Cntrl Statins Arrange cntrl statins s that equipment peratin is visible frm the statins and clearly mark r label each statin t indicate its functin. The emergency stp devices installed with yur system are designed s that they cannt be verridden frm ther lcatins. Keep the area arund yur cntrl statin clear. Remve all miscellaneus equipment (such as inactive and unused actuatrs, cntrllers, and wiring) frm cntrl statins and panel bards, as well as bslete diagrams, indicatrs, cntrl labels, and ther material that might cnfuse the peratr : Safety Devices All safety devices, including wiring f electrical safety devices, are designed t perate in a "fail-safe" manner; that is, if pwer r the device fails, a hazardus cnditin will nt result : Emergency Stps and Restarts In case f an emergency stp, first determine the cause f the stppage and crrect the situatin that warranted the stp. T resume peratin after a stppage, manually reset r start at the lcatin where the emergency stp ccurred. Nte: Befre yu try t crrect the situatin, lck ut r tag ut the starting device, unless it must be perated t determine the cause r t safely remve the stppage. Fr additinal infrmatin, refer t the latest issue f ANSI Z , American Natinal Standard fr Persnnel Prtectin Lckut/Tagut f Energy Surces - Minimum Safety Requirements. 2-4: Applicatin Safety The equipment used in yur system is designed t cnvey specified cmmdities r materials within a certain rate and speed. It might nt be pssible t safely use the equipment utside f the intended capacities r speeds. Check with yur supervisr if yu have questins regarding the safe peratin f the equipment. 2-5: Transfer, Lading, and Discharge Pints Prevent free-falling material that might result frm flding, riccheting, r uncntrlled free-fall frm ccurring. At transfer, lading, and discharge pints, prevent uncnfined and uncntrlled free-fall f material resulting frm flding, riccheting, verlading, trajectry, leakage, r a cmbinatin theref, if the material wuld create a hazard t persnnel 600 S. 7 Sectin 3: Installatin Nte: All equipment must be installed t cnfrm t the Natinal and Lcal Safety Cdes. In the event that any cautin r warning labels affixed t the equipment are damaged in shipping r bscured frm visin because f the psitin f the equipment n site, yu shuld rder the apprpriate replacement labels befre perating the equipment. 3-1: Installatin Nercn pre-assembles and pre-tests all live drum spirals prir t shipment. This allws us t ship the unit nearly cmpletely assembled. The units are laid dwn n their sides, resting n the supprt structure. Additinal bracing is added t supprt any critical nn-remvable parts. T prtect certain areas during shipping they will be remved and packaged separately. This ften includes the large gearbx that drives the drum and the infeed and discharge cnveyr sectins. These sectins are clearly labeled when shipped and can be easily installed per the detail drawings prvided : Unlading The live drum spiral will arrive n a single skid and it is recmmended t be pushed r pulled with a frk truck. Each unit is custm and an estimated weight will be prvided s that the installatin cntractr may plan fr apprpriate frk truck capacity. The detail drawings prvided indicate acceptable pints f cnnectin fr mving/r lifting the units. (See sectin 7-2) Use straps t cnnect t these lcatins as well as the skid and mve the unit as required : Standing Up Once the unit is lcated near its final psitin, and all crss bracing and tie dwn straps have been remved the unit can be std up. The prper and mst cmmn methd t stand these units up is shwn in drawing f sectin 7-2. Nte: Adequate ceiling clearance is critical t allw the drum t swing t an upright psitin. Typical nminal clearance required is 5 feet. Special care and cnsideratin shuld be taken when clearances are less than 5 feet : Cmpleting Assembly Cnnect all remaining jints, carefully check cnveyr fr crrect elevatin and level, and then tighten the fasteners t secure the sectin being installed. Ideally every transitin frm ne cnveyr t the next shuld have a slight drp in elevatin s that the prducts d nt snag r hang up. Typically 1/16 is adequate frm cnveyr t cnveyr. Once the spiral is psitined as required, the infeed and discharge elevatins have been verified, the unit shuld be lagged t the flr and any ther bracing added : Wiring As nted abve in sectin 2-5, be sure t fllw all Natinal Electrical Cde and any lcal stated cdes. Als be sure t fllw all recmmendatins nted abve in sectins 2-3 thrugh 2-8. Nercn will prvide lcal enclsures that will huse the VFD s fr the belt drive and the drum drive. These will be munted n the structure and bth mtrs will be wired back t this enclsure. The custmer will be respnsible fr cnnecting the pwer and cntrl wiring at this lcatin. Nte: Brake Mtrs Sme units require a brake mtrs n the belt drive t ensure stppage f the belt. Brake mtrs will be prewired and prgrammed accrdingly t the Nercn supplied enclsure. The wiring, prgraming, and sequencing fr all the drives in the live drum system shuld be aligned with the recmmendatins nted abve and all prvided schematics. Failure t d s will lead t premature belt wear and pssible prduct r equipment damage : System Sensrs The live drum spiral units have 3 sensrs that cntinually mnitr the drums perfrmance while in peratin. The ver trque sensr is lcated at the belt drive, the take-up sensr is lcated n the take-up frame wrk and the zer speed (n belt mvement) sensr is lcated at the infeed pulley. If any f these sensrs are signaled the system will perfrm a safe shut dwn. This means the belt will stp mving and the drum will stp a set time later. The ver trque sensr, is designed t prevent high tensin in the belt. The takeup sensr is designed t stp the unit if t much r t little belt is in the system. The zer speed (n belt 600 S. Cmmercial Street Neenah, WI PH:

mvement) sensr is designed t stp the unit shuld the belt ever unexpectedly stp while in prductin. All sensr lcatins are shwn n the supprt drawing in sectin 7-1. After all cnnectins are made, check bth mtr rtatins and I/O functins prir t mving t the belt installatin sectin belw : Belt Installatin Befre installing the belt becme familiar with the manufacturer s installatin and maintenance manual prvided in additin t this manual. Fr installatin cnvenience, prper belt rientatin is als nted n the detailed drawings. After the unit has been prperly psitined, lagged, and wired, the belt can be installed. The mst effective way t install the belt is t start at the infeed f the unit as described n the detailed drawing. Carefully feed the belt arund the drum while manually jgging the drum frm the lcal enclsure. Using the jg functin n drum VFD will rtate the drum at a very lw speed while it is depressed. This will help t pull the belt thrugh the system and speed up installatin time. The belt will need t be manually guided and tensined against the drum. Think f a winch in a ship yard pulling a large vessel, nly slight tensin is needed after a few wraps have been made arund the drum. As yu pull n the leading edge f the belt, the drum will drive the belt up r dwn the unit depending n yur cnfiguratin. Once the belt is cmpletely ciled arund the drum, rute the belt thrugh the rest f the unit. Be sure t fllw the belt path as exactly shwn n the detail drawings supplied fr yur specific unit : Prper Belt Quantity T initially btain the prper amunt f belt in the system, be sure the belt is pulled taught by hand thrughut the system and the take-up is lcated in the upper third f the take-up slt. This will require mnitring as the system cmpletes its break in perid. Reference the peridic inspectin guide fr schedule and cleaning requirements. Tip: The take-up can be pinned in the up psitin t allw fr easy installatin f belt. See supprt drawing in sectin 7-1 fr lcatin & size f pin required. Once the belt has been prperly installed yu can mve nt the initial n-site start-up. (Nte: Nercn runs all units in huse prir t shipping.) 600 S. Cmmercial Street Neenah, WI PH:

Sectin 4: Initial Start-up 4-1: Initial Start-up Check List Spiral is securely fastened t the flr and all supplied crss bracing and tie brackets are munted. Check that the prper amunt f belt is in the system. (Sectin 3-2.7) Check the entire belt path fr any bstructins, snags, r tight spts that may have been created during shipping r installatin. Be sure there is nthing n the belt befre initial n-site start-up. (i.e. tls, cmputers, etc.) Check that the sensrs are functining prperly. E-stp relay must be set. All faults must be identified and cleared. Ensure shipping blts are remved frm weighted take-up and that it mves freely up and dwn the take-up slt. 600 S. Cmmercial Street Neenah, WI PH:

Sectin 5: Peridic Inspectin Guide 5-1: Intrductin NERCON equipment is designed t perate with a minimum f maintenance. Dwntime n any part f a system invlves bth time and mney. Certainly nt all breakdwns r failures can be detected befre they ccur; hwever, many can be prevented if yu fllw a regular peridic inspectin prgram. When yu install new equipment, yu shuld establish a schedule f peridic inspectin. The inspectin prcedures utlined in this manual prvide an easy means f determining the peratinal status f the equipment. This will enable yu t identify pssible truble areas, s that the suspect cnditin des nt deterirate t the pint f equipment failure. 5-2: Purpse The bjective f the peridic inspectin schedule is t ensure that the equipment perfrms at maximum efficiency ver a lng perid f time. This helps t eliminate cstly repairs. D nt assume that truble will ccur and, therefre, pass ver inspectin items. Standardized prcedures ensure effective cntrl ver maintenance peratins and enable yu t cmpare equipment in rder t evaluate the inspectin prgram. Nte: Replace any faulty parts immediately upn discvery during scheduled inspectins. 5-3: Peridic Inspectin In the curse f spiral peratin, peridic inspectin f the system is required t detect prblems and make repairs befre serius damage ccurs. The imprtant thing is t set up a regular inspectins and maintenance schedule. Spiral belt Checklist: (Daily/Weekly/Mnthly) D: During peratin mnitr belt perfrmance fr any irregularities. D: Check fr any prduct spillage r build up that wuld affect belt perfrmance. D: Mnitr the surface f the drum fr any cntaminants that culd affect the frictin relatinship between the belt and the drum. D: Belt length / take-up psitin. (Daily fr first 500 hurs f peratin nly) W: Belt length / take-up psitin. (Weekly after 500 hurs f peratin nly) W: Inspect entire belt length fr any damaged r missing belt mdules. W: Check fr any freign debris n r arund the belt path. W: Lk fr unusual wear patterns n the belt surface and inner edge. W: Examine sprckets fr signs f dirt build-up in tth pckets. M: Examine drive sprckets fr signs f excessive wear. M: Check the carry ways and return way wearstrips fr excessive wear. 5-4: Cleaning In general, the live drum spiral cnveyr can be treated like mst ther cnveyr in the plant. Sme majr differences apply based n the level f washdwn yu have purchased. This is directly related t the peratinal envirnment yur drum spiral will reside in. Regardless f envirnment, at n pint shuld any lubricants be applied t the spiral belt r drum. Sme frictin between belt and drum is required, hwever if anything cmes in cntact with the drum t increase r decrease the frictin (i.e. spilled prduct) it shuld be immediately cleaned ff : Nn-Washdwn Spirals! Nn-washdwn spirals are nt intended t be cmpletely sprayed dwn. Hwever if abslutely required spt rinsing can be an effective way t clean islated areas f cntaminants. These areas shuld be dried immediately when cleaning is cmplete t prevent any unwanted crrsin.! Nn-washdwn units are recmmended t be wiped dwn with clean rags until clean.! Special attentin shuld be paid t the cleanliness f the drum. During the first weeks f peratin a black film r dust may develp n the drum surface and belt edge due t the plishing actin f the belt. This will decrease ver time, but shuld be wiped away with a clean damp rag frm bth the belt and the drum itself. This may need t be dne as frequently as nce a day n new machines. 600 S. Cmmercial Street Neenah, WI PH:

5-4.2 Washdwn Spirals! In washdwn envirnments it is advisable t clean the live drum spiral unit by means f a spraying system with a cleaning agent fllwed by a clean water rinse. This shuld be dne while the unit is running t help the cleaning prcess. The unit shuld als be allwed adequate time t dry befre returning t prductin.! Fllw belt manufacturer s recmmendatins regarding apprpriate cleaning cmpunds fr the plastic belt. (Mild faming agents recmmended)! While all electrical cmpnents used are rated fr wash-dwn duty, it is nt recmmended t directly spray any pht eyes, prximity sensrs, etc. with high pressure water.! Special attentin shuld be paid t the cleanliness f the drum. During the first weeks f peratin a black film may develp n the drum and belt edge surfaces due t the plishing actin f the belt. This will decrease ver time, but shuld be rinsed with ht water as it accumulates, pssibly as frequently as daily n new machines. 600 S. Cmmercial Street Neenah, WI PH:
