5 Applicatin f Valve Actuatr Retrfits fr Water/Wastewater Once it is determined the particular valve requires a different style f actuatr, the next step is t determine f the applicatin. Fr this presentatin we are assuming autmated actuatrs inlieu-f upgraded manual actuatrs, but the same methdlgy applies fr these als. 6 Types f Actuatrs and Operating Mde Water/Wastewater See the presentatin; Actuatrs and Valve Technlgy/Types and Cmpnents regarding type f autmatic actuatrs available. The secnd decisin is the type and cnditin f the valve, the mde f peratin and the best way t autmate it with the existing facilities. Types f Actuatrs and Operating Methdlgy (Mde) Pneumatic/Electric/Electrnic shuld be a simple decisin especially if yu are replacing a wrn, existing autmatic actuatr r installing new place f a manual actuatr. Als, cnsider if there is a PLC cabinet in clse prximity when cnsidering a Mdulating applicatin r ne cntrlled r indicated n SCADA. Primary Site Investigatin Primary investigatin is dne befrehand by the end user t identify the lcality in the area fr the desired autmatin. Pwer availability nting electrical surce with unused r under laded breakers, cmpressed air availability, cntrls terminatin cards/terminals fr cnnecting t SCADA, ptential NEMA rating requirements, etc.

7 Secndary Investigatin This step is usually dne by the ptential vendr and end user t determine specifics abut the particular valve t be autmated. Des the valve t be autmated require any regulatry restrictins fr sizing cnsideratins: AWWA C paragraph a requires AWWA butterfly valve actuatrs t have a 1.5 safety factry applied t the perating trque. ACME screw valves; rising r nn-rising, have an industry standard f speed f peratin/amunt f travel per minute s n damage will ccur t threads r actuatr stem nut. Mdulating service Electric actuatrs specify nt t exceed 45 secnds speed f peratin frm Full Open t Full Clsed n a quarter turn valves t ensure prper respnse time and eliminate hunting, my minimum speed f peratin is 60 secnds. Des the valve manufacturer prduct trque tables fr the mdel valve yu are autmating. If replacing an existing autmatic actuatr, are riginal submittal data sheets r tagging infrmatin available t cnfirm details. Is the valve in gd cnditin, shuld extra safety factr be cnsidered? Is yur autmatr experienced in the endeavr because Experience is Expensive. Obtain the shaft data, actuatr rientatin desired, bnnet details, ACME Thread data (Pitch/Lead). Is there a desired failure mde when any aspect f the pwer fails.

8 Sizing Actuatrs Water/Wastewater Once the valves is selected fr autmatin, sizing f the actuatr is the MOST imprtant aspect f the endeavr, even mre imprtant than price. Yu can get the best price in twn, but if the actuatr des nt meet yur expectatins r des nt d the jb r last fr a lng time, it was nt a gd utcme. Regulatry Infrmatin AWWA specificatins are a set f minimum specificatins manufacturers use t design and manufacture prducts fr sale t Gvernment Waterwrks custmers. Reference Infrmatin Bks: Valve and Actuatr Technlgy, by Wayne Ulanski, McGraw Hill, Inc., Manufacturers data sheets, their representatives fr bth valve and actuatr vendrs. The internet Old Data sheets frm submittals r similar valve types frm different manufacturers with similar bills f material. Tagging frm near-by valves in the same applicatin. Industry standards Other Water/ Wastewater plants with the same valves in the same applicatin.

9 Several different sized valves n the table Manufacturer Datasheet Operating trque is listed at 50, 100, 150, 175 and 50 PSI Differential Operating Pressure fr undercut disc. What are sme typical applicatins fr reduced Disc valves?

10 Submittal data-sheet f existing r similar valve The Jb Number is actually the Serial number n the EIM tag lcated n the actuatr. See the valve data indicating the size f the valve and perating tque fr a new valve. Valve stem Data shws the stem fr cupling infrmatin and the strke time 60 Secnds. Knwing EIM, the ACM (Analg Cntrl Mdule) is in fact a mdulating card fr an Electrnic EIM Actuatr. The N Number under the Electrical Data, is 15, meaning the electrnic actuatr will rtate 15 times frm Full Open t Full Clsed indicating that there is a gear bx munted t the valve and since it is mdulating I bet it is a wrmgear style.

11 EIM Actuatr Sizing Sheet Nte that as the speed f peratin increases, the trque utput increases. As the perating vltage decreases, the amp draw increases, Pull ut trque is getting the plug r disc ut f the resilient seat like n a plug r butterfly valve. Peak trque is what the actuatr is ultimately rated. 15 Minute duty is where the actuatr can run pulling the max amps befre the thermal verlads take it ut and let it cl ff. Read the fine print: Ductile Irn Gears shuld nt be used fr Mdulating Service. Ensure yu are lking at the crrect pwer range data sheet vltage changes perating trques als.
