4 BOOK NOOK AN AVAILABLE MAN - author HILMA WOLITZER When Edward Schuyler, a modest sixtytwo year old science teacher is widowed, he finds himself ambushed by female attention. There are plenty of unattached women around, but a healthy, handsome, available man is rare and desirable. Edward receives phone calls from widows seeking love, or at least lunch, while friends try to set him up at dinner parties. The problem is that Edward doesn't feel available. He is mourning his beloved wife, Bee, and prefers the familiar routine of work, gardening and bird-watching. But then his step-children surprise him by placing a personal ad in the newspaper on his behalf. The letters start pouring in and Edward is torn between his loyalty to Bee's memory and his growing longing for connection. Gradually he begins dating and just when Edward thinks he has the game figured out, a chance meeting proves that loves always arrives when it's least expected. Remember, initial and return for others to enjoy. TRAVEL WITH DEB What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness? John Steinbeck Joy travel will be in the Great Room at the Senior Center on Wednesday, December 6 th. Joyce and Greg Wingham will talk about all the splendid travels they have to offer for Chicago, Amish country, Mackinac Island, and Branson, just to mention a few! We will meet at 10:30. Bring friends and enjoy the refreshments with us. I just returned from a trip that Joy offered to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta! What an amazing time. 6 FROM YOUR COUNCIL ON AGING November is the month we like to give special thanks and gratitude to the people around us who have allowed us to be of service and support to the seniors and caregivers of Beavercreek. We continue to connect with wonderful individuals through various programs and activities, including Lunch n Learns, Partners In Care, caregiver support groups, Brain Fitness afternoons, Medicare counseling and enrollment, countywide events, and of course whenever we are walking through the beautiful Center! Our partnership with the members, volunteers and staff of the Center is so very special, but it also helps us to be the best we can be and for that, we are especially thankful. The Council s printed 2018 calendar is now available at the Center and the Council s Beavercreek and Xenia offices. Each month showcases a Greene County senior or senior couple and their animal companions. As always, the calendars are going fast, so if you would like to have one, don t wait The Council s Holiday Gift Soiree and Open House is Wednesday December 6 th from 11am to 6pm at the Xenia Community Center (1265 W. Second St), next door to the Council s Xenia office. Your creative and talented GCCOA team and volunteers have been busy preparing for the transformation of the hallway and classrooms into something extra special, including a Cabin in the Woods, Sugar Plum Dreams, Christmas for the Birds, the Vintage Kitchen, and the Old Fashioned Christmas Store Window. As always, you will find one-of-a-kind creations, gifts for and related to our furry companions, unique treasures for the sports enthusiast, and find yourself tempted by the homemade sweet treats and savories. Your GCCOA team looks forward to seeing you! The November Lunch n Learn is Friday, November 17 th from 11:30am to 1pm and we will be talking about how to read and make sense of food labels, which goes a long way in helping us make good choices and help manage our blood sugar. And speaking of good choices, a tasty lunch will be provided. Space is limited and reservations are required by November 13 th, which you can make by calling or stopping into the Center. 6 MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT Open Enrollment kicked off last month and we have already assisted hundreds of Greene County beneficiaries with their annual review. We have been pleased to help individuals we have known for quite some time and many who are new to the Council. For those known to the Council, a good portion only had to share updated information over the phone or via e- mail. Others have met with Susan Allen in the Beavercreek or Xenia offices. For the 2018 year, there are 23 prescription plans and 35 Advantage plans available to Greene County beneficiaries. There are changes to premiums, co-pays and what medications and providers are covered. If you have not yet reviewed your 2018 options and would like our assistance, please contact the Council at or info@gccoa.org. When contacting the Council, it is important to have your current medication list, including dosage/frequency, your list of doctors and preferred pharmacy. We are working with beneficiaries in the order they contacted the Council, so your patience is appreciated. The December 7 th deadline will be here before we know it, so please don t delay in making contact for a review. FOR CAREGIVERS: The Caregiver Support Group will meet the 2 nd and 4 th Tuesdays November 14 th and 28 th at 9:30am, in the conference room of the BeaverView Health Center building at 3095 Dayton-Xenia Road (dark brown building, two lots west of McDonald s). The group is for individuals caring for an older loved one, whether they are a spouse, parent, sibling, neighbor or friend. As we move into the holiday season, it is even more important for caregivers to have additional supports in their lives. For more information, please contact the Council at or info@gccoa.org.

When an individual is able to increase their balance, they decrease their risk for falling and give the individual the confidence to walk and carry on with their every day routine. Many people think they are doing well with their physical activity but don t realize that their risk for falling is as great as it might be. Both days will offer 15 minute assessments.
