4 Have you heard of the term physical literacy? We don t take the term lightly. Physical literacy means developing the foundational skills and confidence required to participate in regular physical activity, play a sport or get to the podium. YMCA programs include intentional activities that help build physical literacy to allow your child to participate in whatever activity or sport they choose. Start Early. It s important to build a foundation of physical literacy. The early years are the best time to start. You can continue to build these skills through life. Be active for life. It s proven that people who are physically literate are more likely to be active for life. Developing physical literacy skills is progressive, and different at each developmental stage. > BOYS 0-6 GIRLS 0-6 Learn basic movement skills and link them together to play. Develop habits for being active. BOYS 6-9 GIRLS 6-8 Learn fundamental movement skills and build agility, balance and coordination. BOYS 9-12 GIRLS 8-11 Convert fundamental movement skills to fundamental sport- specific skillls. Learn more about physical literacy at activeforlife.ca. 4

5 IT S A FACT. 70% of Canadian children aged 3-4 years get their recommended 180 minutes of daily activity. But only 14% of children aged 5-11 years and 5% of youth aged years get their recommended 60 minutes of daily activity. 10 Ten ways to encourage your kids to love to move. When kids are moving, they are developing physical literacy at the same time. The love of moving needs to be taught and encouraged, exactly the same way we teach and encourage our children to love to read Help your child move early. Make moving a natural part of your child s day right from the beginning. Encourage your child to crawl, stand, walk and play. Build physical activity into your family s daily routine. Engage in some form of physical activity with your family every day. It doesn t matter what the activity is, as long as you are moving together. To start, make a family activity goal of 15 minutes per day. Lead by example. What s your active routine? Do you practice yoga, play tennis, walk the dog, or work out at the gym? Being an active role model is one of the best things you can do to encourage your kids to be active. Power your transportation. Walk, run, bike, scooter, or skate your way from point A to point B. Encouraging your kids to power their own transportation from an early age will get them into a healthy habit they won t think twice about. Expose your kids to a wide variety of activities and sports. Kids who specialize in a specific sport too early often get burned out. It s important to let kids try lots of different activities so they can develop a wide range of skills and discover what they enjoy. With a few exceptions, most sports do not require specialization until kids are in their early teens. Praise but don t push. Notice when your child is enjoying an activity and cheer them on. Always keep things positive from the sidelines so they understand that you value what they are doing, but you aren t so invested in it that they feel pressure Focus on fun. Most kids aren t ready for competition until they are at least 10 years old. For kids under ten, fun activities and non-competitive games keep things stressfree and allow them to have success no matter what their skill level. Spend time outdoors. It s proven that kids who play outside take 35% more daily steps. Create opportunities that encourage outdoor play every day. Choose a daycare or pre-school that incorporates physical activity. Parents should look for a daycare that dedicates time to encouraging ageappropriate movement every day. Children need lots of opportunities to move and develop basic skills like running, jumping, hopping, and skipping during both structured and unstructured play. Encourage your child s school to incorporate physical activity in the curriculum. Every school would benefit from a physical education specialist who knows how to engage children of all skill levels and abilities, and can help them develop their love of moving. Physical literacy is as important as reading literacy. For kids, both quality and quantity is important when it comes to being physically active. Moving with your family every day will help your kids value physical activity, promote physical literacy, and keep everyone happy and healthy. Children with physical literacy skills have the ability and confidence to be active for life. Active for Life is a non-profit organization committed to helping parents raise happy, healthy, physically literate kids. For more tips like these, please visit activeforlife.com. The words honesty, caring, responsibility and respect hang prominently inside the Melcor YMCA at Crowfoot, she says. G/SUMMER Andy and the team at Melcor embody those RAM values and put them GUIDE to good use creating communities and investing in the success of kids, families and everyone who lives and works within them. THANK YOU MELCOR DEVELOPMENTS FROM LEFT: BROOKE MELTON, ANDY MELTON, EVAN HAZELL, HELENE WEIR, BRIAN BAKER YMCA Calgary will be forever grateful to Melcor Developments for their support. Calgarians will be too. In a significant boost to its Power of Potential Campaign, YMCA Calgary received a $1-million donation from Melcor Developments Ltd., celebrating the strong relationship between the YMCA, Melcor and its founding family, the Meltons. In recognition of this substantial and meaningful gift, YMCA Calgary has renamed its Crowfoot YMCA facility in northwest Calgary as the Melcor YMCA at Crowfoot. THE POWER OF POTENTIAL is a $30 million fundraising campaign with a goal to give more Calgarians a place to belong, grow, thrive and lead. Operating three new facilities in partnership with the City of Calgary, will help us respond to the growing demand for our programs and services. The Melton family and Melcor Developments are strong supporters of the Power of Potential Campaign and YMCA Calgary. 8

14 AQUATICS LEARNING TO SWIM ISN T JUST FOR KIDS. Looking to overcome your fear of the water, refine your strokes, or become a more efficient triathlon swimmer? We offer adult programs from beginner to master. Visit page 23 for details. 14

15 IT S A FACT. Drowning is the second leading cause of death in Canadian children under 5 years of age. Deceptively quiet and often mistaken for water play, 10% of drownings happen while parents are watching. Introducing children to swim lessons that teach swim skills and water safety helps to prevent drowning. Register your child for a swim lesson today! How do you determine what swim level is right for your child? Use our progression chart and level descriptions. If you have observed your child in the water, use the descriptions on pages 16 and 17 to determine what level is right for your child. With the exception of Star Leadership 7, our unparented swim programs have two levels in each swim class. Once your child can confidently complete the skills in the first level they will move to the next (for example, once Bobbers successfully complete their skills, they move to Floaters). Depending on skill level, your child can be enrolled in the second level to start. Contact your local YMCA and speak with a certified swim instructor. Book a swim assessment with one of our aquatics team members - it s free! Ask your child s swim intructor on the last day of lessons where to place your child for the next session. Use your child s online swim report card to determine what skills match which level. To access your child s report card, visit Use your membership or swim access card barcode number to login. 43 IT S A FACT.
