COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Community Engagement Tied to the Division II Championship Experience: All Division II championships will provide community engagement experiences for participating student-athletes and coaches. A key part of Division II s strategic position, community engagement emphasizes the relationship of athletics in strengthening communities. Division II s unique approach to community not only connects athletics with outreach opportunities, but also brings communities inside the division s championship experience. Division II is committed to developing students-athletes and communities by actively engaging in shared experiences. The objective of community engagement is to build relationships by bringing communities to experience Division II events. In an effort to expose the core value of community engagement within NCAA Division II and the sport of tennis, each participating team on Championship Saturday will have the opportunity 3
7 to volunteer for a mini demonstration and autograph session for a local boy s and girl s club to share experiences within that community. In turn we will invite those youth to support our student-athletes during our championship events. The demonstration will be approximately one hour in length. The community outreach will give each participant a unique opportunity to interact with children who have little or no exposure to tennis. All youth participants will receive a Division II autograph card and a sweatband. This event will take place on Saturday May 12 th, For more information or if you have any questions, contact Jill Willson at jwillson@ncaa.org or call Community Engagement Youth Will Come From: Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix Jerry & Helen Wisotsky Peoria Branch N. 81 st Ave, Phoenix, Arizona Office: Fax: jreynolds@bgcmp.org bgcmp.org DRIVING DIRECTIONS Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to Days Inn & Suites West Bell Road, Surprise, AZ Approximately 40 minutes Begin by going east on E Sky Harbor Blvd and follow the signs to stay on E Sky Harbor Blvd (2.9 mi) Merge onto I-10 W via the ramp to Downtown/AZ-51/P hoenix (15 mi) Take the AZ-101 Loop N exit, Exit 133B (.8 mi) Merge onto AZ-101 N/Loop 101/Aqua Fria Fwy N (8.8mi) Take the US-60/Grand Ave exit, Exit 11 (.3 mi) Turn left onto US-60 W/W Grand Ave (5.6 mi) Turn right onto N Dysart Rd (.4 mi) Turn right onto W Bell Rd (.8 mi) W Bell Rd is on the right. 10 DRUG TESTING NCAA championships committees, following a recommendation from the NCAA drug-testing subcommittee, have discontinued the practice of announcing whether drug testing will be conducted at NCAA championship events. Although knowing prior to competition whether NCAA drug testing was to occur had value for reasons of convenience, it left open the possibility that student-athletes might be tempted to use banned substances if they knew that NCAA testing was not being conducted at the site of competition. Therefore, all coaches and student-athletes should presume that NCAA drug testing will occur at this championship event. Please inform your student-athletes that in the event they are notified of their selection for drug testing, the student-athlete must inform an official representative of your institution (e.g., coach, athletic trainer) before proceeding to the drug-testing site. Studentathletes will be reminded by the courier to contact their team representative. If drug testing is to occur, student-athletes will need to report to the designated men s and women s restrooms, within one hour of completion of competition. A member of the respective institutions administrative staff will be notified before the student-athlete is taken to drug testing. ELITE 90 NCAA Academic Recognition Program. The Elite 90 academic recognition program is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average competing at the finals site for each of the NCAA s 90 championships. All documents and nomination forms can be obtained at the following location: You must be logged onto the site to access the page.
