1 THE FLANKER 14 THE NEWSLETTER OF THE LILYDALE FOOTBALL CLUB INC TELEPHONE: President: Anthony Simmons Secretary: Vicki Hottes Editor Flanker: Gerry Toohey Bowman Medal/Presidents Luncheon Edition Issue 2 26 th April 2014

2 President s Page round 2 reverses round 1! Our journey to Noble Park on the weekend saw a reversal of last week s results. The U19 s opened their account with a convincing win but Noble had our measure in the Reserves and Seniors. Our Anthony Simmons young side got a taste of playing against seasoned, bigger bodied opposition but despite the one sided score line it was President good to see some of our first year senior players still having year senior players still having a crack through to the final siren. Hopefully we can do better against old arch rivals Montrose at our next game on Anzac Day Weekend, Saturday 26th April at home. On Anzac Day, Friday 25th April, representatives of the Senior and Junior club will be laying a wreath in honor of the Anzacs during the dawn service at the cenotaph, Main St. Lilydale. All players and officials are requested to attend the dawn service in club polos, to show our respect for the Anzacs and support local groups and the broader community. Also next home game we will host Presidents Luncheon/Bowman Medal day. The Bowman Medal, one of our most sought after awards, will be awarded to the player judged best on ground. Please give this day your support and show our life members and sponsors the full strength of our membership and supporter base. On the subject of sponsorship, I would like to give a big thank you to Graham Reynolds and Ray White Lilydale for stepping back into the Major Sponsor position this year. Graham continues to be a major contributor to the football club financially and has also been a great help for me in my new role as well. I look forward to meeting all our sponsors, especially those new to the club, and catching up with all our Life Members at Presidents Luncheon next week. GO FALCONS! - SIMMO Page 2

To the boys credit we came out after half time and gave a real good contest, had our chances in the last quarter, but failed to take them, showed character today. Thanks to Ange, Hawk and Wazza for helping out. Great effort today after coming off a defeat last week the boys were determined not to let the same thing happen. Our use of the ball was well shared especially in the back half which gave our forwards the opportunities to kick goals. 6 Junior President s Report Footy in full swing The footy is in full swing. We had wins for the 11 s,12 s,13s,14s,17c,and 17 Premium. The Under 15 Ds and Peter Koger 15A s had narrow losses and are not far away from their first win. The Under 9 s are having a great time and are a bundle of enthusiasm. The under 10s are bonding well and look like they will have an enjoyable season. The car raffle is going great and I would just like to remind everyone that if each family sells their two allocated books the club will make $43,000. This money will go directly into the extension of the Gateway clubrooms and the electronic scoreboard at the senior oval. If you have sold your tickets please return the sold books and money to Shane Wyles via your team managers. The EFL are in constant contact with us in relation to grading of teams and recently I have been a bit disappointed with some parents and players taking their frustrations out on coaches, team managers and committee. The EFL has made the decision that teams are graded in consultation with the clubs. Sometimes we are happy with where our teams are placed sometimes not so fortunate. If we have two teams in one age group, generally we will be graded A & D and this year as we have 3 under 17 s we are Premium, B and C. After round two the EFL assess teams and re-evaluate their positions. The EFL will then decide to re-grade a team according to results and the opposition they have played up til round 4. I am in constant contact with the EFL and represent LJFC in this issue. I have built strong relationships with the EFL and believe we get a fair hearing for most issues that arise. It is damaging to the club and unproductive when coaches or parents contact the EFL without consultation of me or the committee. If you have an issue relating to a grading/efl issue please call me and I will represent the club. With Easter this week we all have a week off and next round is the ANZAC Medal round and awards night. I would like to see as many juniors as possible at the Dawn Service next Friday morning in the club colours. Happy Easter and see you all next week. Peter Koger - President Page 6

7 Under 17 Premier Round 2 KNOX LILYDALE Grant Shanks BEST: Corey Berntsen, Ben Wood, Nick Del Biondo, Jayden Depace, Scott Kirk, Jack Nolan, Jayden Wilson, MATCH GOALS: Jayden Depace 2, Jack Morris 1, Cory Berntsen 1, Jordan Dunham 1, Jack Nolan 1, Nick Del Biondo 1, Ben Wood 1, Nick Smith 1, Jayden Wilson 1 SEASON GOALS: Jack Morris 4, Lucas Halse 4, Cory Berntsen 3, Jayden Depace 3 A game of 2 halves, we were missing too many targets and our turn overs were hurting us. But to everyone s credit after half time we started to get on top and in the last quarter ran away with a good win. 8 Lachlan Koger Under 17B Round 2 NOBLE PARK LILYDALE BEST: Ben Johnson, Tom Evans, Klae Carter, Ryan D Argent, Sammy Mutsaers MATCH GOALS: Josh Schneider 1, Tom Evans 1 SEASON GOALS: James Howard 3, Sam Mutsaers, Josh Schneider and Tom Evans 1 each Today we came up against a tough opposition. We knew they were a good side so it was always going to take our best. Our first half wasn't the greatest. We were allowing them to run and play their quick style of footy which they just kept scoring from. After half time our leaders got the boys going and we came out a totally different side. The boys came out firing in the 3rd quarter and in the first 15 minutes we were only a goal off winning that quarter but with only 18 players and 2 of the boys only on one leg we just couldn't keep up. Credit to our boys for fighting hard and giving it a red hot crack because they showed really good spirit and should be happy with the way they played! AWARDS: The Flanker Tom Evans Gatorade Klae Carter Max s Pies Josh Steele $10 award Ben Johnson Page 8

But a disappointing last quarter gave me a good look at where we need to improve. Good to see you get the win though boys. 10 Under 15A Round 2 LILYDALE Craig Davison ROWVILLE BEST: Joel Koger, Blake Hughes, Matt DiPietrantonio, Will Pleming, Kyle Skewes, Shane Kollosche, Sam King MATCH GOALS: Joel Koger 3, Luke Smith 1, Jamie Shaw 1 SEASON GOALS: Joel Koger 3, Matt DiPietrantonio 2, Luke Smith 2, Luke Crammer 1, Nick Haslam 1, Daniel Thompson 1, Jamie Shaw 1, Shane Kollosche 1 Sunday again and we came up against last year s runners up Rowville. After only playing a half a game of footy last week, we asked the boys to put four quarters together. We came out hard putting a lot of pressure on the ball carrier and trying to get our hands on the ball first we did it well even though we went into ¼ time nine points down. In the second quarter they showed us why they finished 2 nd last year, they ran hard, spread well & their kicking to targets was awesome, it showed us where we need to get to as they kept us scoreless going in to half time, 45 points down & looking like we would cop a belting. At half time we asked the boys to get that pressure back on the ball carrier and go harder at the ball in 50/50 contest and they did, outscoring Rowville in the third quarter, which was a huge effort. Three quarter time the boys were asked to keep it up and keep pushing and running to win the quarter. We didn t get there, but we held our own for all but one quarter, eventually going down by 48 points. We will start winning or getting a lot closer to the top teams when we play four full quarters of footy a definite improvement on last week so well done and keep training hard, the wins will come. 11 Under 15D Round 2 BLACKBURN Bruce Falkingham BEST: Aaron Mandl, Sam Hennessey, Lachlan Cox, Mitchell Gordan, Peter Nouk MATCH GOALS: Sam Hennessey 3, Lachlan Cox 2, Mitch Gordan 1, Luke Falkingham 1, Garang Nai 1, Lachlan Philips 1 SEASON GOALS: Sam Hennessey 4, Peter Nouk 2 A much better performance today saw our boys well in the game at three quarter time but with no interchange bench, saw us run out of steam in the last 10 minutes allowing Blackburn to score 3 late goals to clench the game. Overall our boys played good football, hard at the ball and contested extremely well all day. Again saw us short of players with 2 under 14 boys helping us out 2 new players to the club both had good games Liam Canaider and Lochie Huckstep. With a week off and a couple of players returning from holidays should see us at good numbers after Easter. 12 Under 14B Round 2 John Gordon LILYDALE CROYDON BEST: Mitch Gordon, Jack jordan, Lachlan cox, Riley Caulsen, Macauley Beckwith, Matthew Waters, Bailee Clayton MATCH GOALS: Macauley Beckwith 5, Cooper Lewis 3, Luke Chandler 2, Cooper Woodward 2, Riley Wiggett 2, Lachlan Cox 2, Mitch Fantulin 1, Mitchel Gordon 1, Jack Jordan 1, Riley Clausen 1 and Mathew Waters 1. After a slow start we started to run and share the footy a lot more our game plan is very simple when they have the ball we have to work hard to get it off them and when we have the ball we run and share it and keep it away from them. We all worked hard but need to work on some areas of our game. Great win. 13 Under 13B Round 2 CROYDON LILYDALE Nick Tennant BEST: Jack Bateman, Beau Tennant, Nick Sanelli, Kyle Appleby, Liam Appleby, Jarrod Thompson, Lachlan Poli MATCH GOALS: Jack Bateman 6, Beau Tennant 4, Lachlan Poli 1, Riley Baxter 1, Dan Schlueter 1, Lochlan Hardie 1, Ben Bara 1, Brad Arthur 1 SEASON GOALS: Jack Bateman 11, Beau Tennant 4, Jarrod Thompson 3, Liam Appleby 3, Brad Arthur 4, Lachlan Poli 2, Kai Van Leemput 1, Riley Baxter 1, Ben Bara 1, Dan Schlueter 1, Another quality performance from the group. Can t ask much more than two 15 goal wins to start the year. Croydon came at us pretty hard at the start of the game but the longer the game went the better we got and although they kicked 2 goals in the last 5 minutes it was great to see the boys continue to do the little things which enabled us again to kick a high score. Jack and Beau were terrific with 10 goals between them and our midfield was terrific as a whole and are certainly enjoying having our new ruck in the middle James to give them first use. Great to see Ben Bara and Lochie Hardie kick their first goals for us. Big game R3 for us against the top side. Keep the good work going boys. A great third quarter lead by the on ball players help set up a seven goal break at three quarter time. Lilydale kept grinding the opposition down with sheer determination all over the ground. A great team effort today and a well deserved win. AWARDS: The Flanker Jack Bates Gatorade Jack Raukola Max s Pies Nick McKenzie Confectionery Marc Massarotti Page 16

We just need to put the score on the board while we are on top to get rewarded for our effort. Definitely a step in the right direction, onwards and upwards we go. After the half time break we played man on man accountable football and we took control of the game but just couldn't convert on the scoreboard. All the boys were great today against again a very tall side, but if we can continue to do the team things together we will win games. At times this means we turn the footy over and give it to the opposition but it is really encouraging to see the boys look to give to a team mate and work together. We also improved defensively with all the boys trying to stop their opponent having a free run at goals when they had the footy with a number of smoothers also preventing Waverley kicking a number of goals. Well done! AWARDS: The Flanker Will Coppin Confectionery Heath Price Encouragement Medal David Carvill Pancake Parlour: Cody Silvester Page 19
