The regular JCSC general meeting will be a dinner meeting on Tuesday, June19 at a location to be determined. We will meet for dinner at 6:00 P.M. Pikes Peak Concours d Elegance Due to a change in venue, the 4th Annual Pikes Peak Concours d Elegance has been rescheduled from October 5 and 6 to September 28 and 29, The event will be held at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort 3225 Broadmoor Valley Road. An event flyer is being prepared with all the Concour details. Applications and details will also be available soon at 2

3 May, 2012 JCSC Meeting The May meeting was instantly transformed from a pot luck dinner event to a front row encounter with the Endurance Rally Association s 2012 Trans-America Rally. The JCSC initially viewed only the Jaguar contingent of the Rally as those cars were being serviced by Thom s Jaguar Colorado Springs Service Department. Following the club s pot luck dinner, several JCSC members drove to the Rally meeting point, the Cheyenne Mountain Resort, to get a first hand look at many classic vintage European, Australian and American cars from marques that included Aston Martin, Bentley, Chrysler, Dodge, Rolls Royce, Mercedes Benz, Triumph, Volkswagen, MG and Volvo just to name a few. photo by Jack Humphrey 3

4 This beautiful 1960 Jaguar XK-150-S is driven by John Raker with his wife Melinda along as navigator. The Endurance Rally Association, headquartered in Oxon, England ( began organizing rallies with the first being the Pirelli Classic Marathon in 1988 which ran from London to Italy. The ERA organized the first Peking to Paris rally in This rally was held to commemorate the Around the World New York to Paris race of Using a route that ran through Tibet, crossing the Himalayas and camping at the foot of Mount Everest, the race continued through India and Pakistan and included the first crossing of Iran to conclude in Paris. The 10,000 mile rally has been held again in 2007, 2010 and is scheduled again in The Endurance Rally Association marked the Millenium with the Around the World in 80 Days rally. This event ran from London s Tower Bridge overland to China, used an airlift to reach Alaska and ran across Canada and the U.S. to New York. Using another air lift to Monaco the rally continued overland back to Tower Bridge in London. Other ERA events include a London to Athens rally in 2002, a 2005 London to Dakar rally, won by a Peugeot 205. Upcoming ERA rallies include the April 2013 Flying Scotsman London to Edinburgh drive, and a November 2013 Vintage Cape Horn trip. He is driving the rally with his wife Yvonne along as navigator. 4

5 Photo by Jack Humphrey It s truly inspiring to see these rare and beautiful vintage automobiles, normally relegated to show status, continuing to fulfill their design destiny with such grace and glory. And, it sure looks like a lot of fun, too! 5

6 The First Annual Rally of the Cats. As you can tell by the photo below, May, 22nd dawned clear and sunny - a perfect day for JCSC s first rally event. The Rally route was a complete secret, with the directions and contest questions being revealed only as each team received their paperwork as they departed at 2 minute intervals from Jaguar Colorado Springs. The teams consisted of Bill and Peggy Dudley in their 2006 X-Type Sportwagon, Dave and Larenda Hershey and Larenda s sister Leeann Petersen in their 2005 X-Type, Howard and Cyndi Mumm in their 2000 XK-8 Coupe, Jack and Debbie Humphrey (with Don Yowell navigating) in their 1986 XJ-6 VDP and Gary and Dee Kerkow in a stunning Claret 2012 XF Portfolio Edition (their XK was undergoing some cosmetic surgery at the time). The Rally route was quite scenic and interesting and definitely required the attention of a navigator to pick out the carefully disguised answers to the quiz questions on the Rally sheet. Traffic was just heavy enough to keep the drivers busy doing their thing while the navigators needed to be on alert nearly the entire time. The intrepid explorers were rewarded for their efforts with a great lunch at the Wines of Colorado in Cascade. While the team members received treatment for dehydration (lots of wine!), Jack opened the sealed answer sheet and each team scored their results. The winner by a VERY close margin was Gary and Dee Kerkow! Congratulations! It definitely helps to know the fine points of Jaguar automotive history! 6

7 All the explorers survived this challenging ordeal and, after partaking of sumptuous sustenance, managed to depart for home before the sun disappeared behind Pikes Peak. A jolly good bit of fun was had by all! Our sincere thanks to Matt Grimes and Tom Miller for their diligent efforts in setting up this great rally. 7

It s all up to you and what your heart and family desires. The weekend fun starts on Friday, June 29 when you check in to your lovely condo and admire the beauty that surrounds you. You will then join us for registration with a welcome reception of lively conversation, drinks, appetizers and music at Endo s on the Burning Stones Plaza in Center Village. The evening is open to you to explore the area for dinner or maybe take a nice hot tub! On Saturday morning, we will drive our Jaguars into the Burning Stones Plaza and kick off our annual Concours. The afternoon holds some surprise for our traditional competition and a spectacular drive. To end a perfect day, we will have cocktails and dinner together at CB Grille. On Sunday morning, we ve planned a scrumptious brunch to set the stage for the Awards Presentation. As we conclude this fun weekend and you depart, there will be proposed alternate drives home that will vary your route if you please.
