Oklahoma State After having its scheduled season opener rained out last weekend, Oklahoma State will open the 2010 season at the Dodgertown Classic this weekend in Los Angeles. The tourney field also includes USC, UCLA and Vanderbilt. With 233 career wins, head coach Frank Anderson is entering his seventh season at the helm of the Cowboys, who are coming off a season in which they finished OSU advanced to the finals of the NCAA Clemson Regional, and with that appearance, became the only Big 12 Conference team to advance to a Regional championship round each of the last four seasons. OSU returns five position starters from a year ago, including three players who batted over.300. The pitching staff returns a group that accounted for 56 percent of its wins in 09, as well as 14 of its 15 saves. OSU is all time in season openers and has won five in a row Dodgertown Classic OSU will face USC and UCLA on their home fields before taking on Vandy Sunday at Dodger Stadium. The Cowboys are 2-5 all time against USC and 1-5 all time against UCLA, while the matchup against Vanderbilt will be the first ever between the two teams. OSU s two wins against the Trojans came in 1996 at the NCAA Central II Regional in Lubbock, Texas, and propelled the Pokes to the College World Series. The Cowboys finished second in the league in runs, hits, triples and RBIs. In 06, OSU led the Big 12 in homers, triples and slugging percentage, and in 2007 the Cowboys led the Big 12 in six offensive categories and ranked second in two more. UCLA will host OSU at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Saturday. The 17th-ranked Bruins are off to a 4-0 start in Vanderbilt is also 4-0 on the season and faces the Pokes Sunday at Dodger Stadium. Home Sweet Home Allie P. Reynolds Stadium has been home to Oklahoma State baseball since 1981, and in those 29 seasons the Cowboys have been nearly unbeatable on their home field. The Cowboys are (.823) all-time at Reynolds Stadium and have lost more than two consecutive games on their home turf only once (six in a row in May 2007). OSU was 19-9 at home in Club With the Cowboys 2009 season-opening win over BYU, Frank Anderson became the fifth head coach in OSU history to reach 200 career victories. He is the third-fastest coach to reach the milestone in Stillwater behind Gary Ward and Tom Holliday. Anderson is in his seventh season at OSU and owns an overall career record of , which includes an mark in Big 12 play. Aluminum Assault Over the last several seasons, OSU has established itself among the top hitting teams not only in the Big 12 Conference but on a national scale. In 2009, the Cowboys ranked among the Big 12 s best in batting average (third at.300), triples (second with 21), home runs (third with 81) and slugging percentage (second at.503). OSU returns leading hitter Tom Belza from last season s club, along with Kevin David and Mark Ginther, both of whom hit over.300. Belza and David also ranked second and third Kings Of The Hill OSU also continued a trend of having one of the league s most reliable pitching staffs in Four different Cowboy hurlers had at least five wins in 2009, and the pitching staff ranked third in the Big 12 in saves (15), strikeouts (516) and batting average against (.264). The good news is that OSU s pitching staff returns 56 percent of its wins from last season, and pitchers who combined for 14 of the Cowboys 15 saves. OSU returns pitchers who accounted for 255 strikeouts last season, as well as returning five of its six hurlers with the lowest ERAs (min. 10 appearances). In 2008, the Cowboys led the Big 12 with a 3.98 team ERA and also topped the league with 21 saves. OSU s 3.98 ERA marked the only the second time since 1974 that the Cowboys finished the season with a team ERA under 4.00 (also did it in 2005). New Faces OSU s 2010 roster includes 17 newcomers, with eight freshmen and eight junior college transfers and one player who is starting his collegiate baseball career as a junior. Four of the Cowboy newcomers were selected in last June s Major League Baseball Draft: Kevin Chambers (47th round by Detroit), Andrew Heaney (24th round by Tampa Bay), Dane Phillips (49th round by Seattle) and Nico Rosthenhausler (50th round by Detroit). Highlighting the freshman class are Heaney, a southpaw hurler who could be in the starting weekend rotation, and Chambers, a versatile player who could see time at first base, in the outfield and on the mound. The group of JUCO newcomers includes Rosthenhausler, an offensive star at South Mountain Community College, and Devin Shines, the son of former major leaguer and current assistant coach for the New York Mets Razor Shines. Tyler Lyons was a 10th-round pick of the New York Yankees, Thomas Keeling was a 20th-round choice of the Yankees and Kevin David was selected in the 35th round by the Chicago Cubs. Eleven players on the OSU roster have been Major League Baseball Draft picks. That marks the second-highest total in the Big 12, trailing only Texas 13. Lyons Share Tyler Lyons has established himself as one of the Big 12 s best and most consistent hurlers, and the Cowboys pitching staff received a huge boost when he decided to return to Stillwater for his senior season. Lyons, who led OSU in wins each of the last two seasons, was a 10th-round draft pick of the New York Yankees last June but spurned a professional career to continue as the ace of the Cowboys staff. A product of Lubbock, Texas, Lyons enters his final collegiate season with a 19-8 career record, with his 19 wins three shy of moving into the top 10 on OSU s career list. He also sports a 3.83 ERA in 51 appearances. A seven-game winner last season, Lyons was an All-Big 12 Second Team pick in 2008 as a sophomore after compiling a 12-2 mark and 3.31 ERA to go along with 92 strikeouts. In 15 starts, he led the Big 12 with innings pitched and tied for the league lead with four complete games. Lyons 12 wins tied for fourth nationally in His win total also marked the eighthmost wins in a single season in OSU history, and the most by a Cowboy hurler since In Big 12 play, Lyons was 7-1 with a 2.99 ERA and four complete games in 12 starts. Lyons earned NCAA Regional All- Tournament Team honors each of the last two years ( 08 Stillwater Reg., 09 Clemson Reg). Big 12 s Best Baseball America lists Tom Belza as the best pure hitter in the Big 12 Conference in 2010, and it s easy to see why after his first two seasons in Stillwater. The Cowboys infielder has led OSU in hitting each of the last two years and sports a career.363 batting average in 108 games. Belza burst onto the scene as a freshman, moving into the starting lineup early in the 2008 conference season and quickly provedto be a slick fielder and dependable hitter. A native of Loveland, Ohio, Belza led the Big 12 with a.386 batting average in 08 and collected three or more hits in 10 games, including a 6-for-6, six-run, five-rbi effort against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in March. The sixhit performance tied OSU and Big 12 records, and the six runs also tied the school mark. Named a Freshman All-American by Louisville Slugger, Belza also earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors and was named to the NCAA Stillwater Regional All-Tournament Team. After spending his freshman campaign at second base, Belza spent the majority of his time at shortstop in Once again, he paced the Cowboys in hitting, this time with a.346 average. Belza ended the 09 season on a 12-game hitting streak and had a memorable performance at the NCAA Clemson Regional, where he was 7-for-14 with four homers and nine RBIs in four games and earned All-Tournament Team honors. Included in that performance was an opening round game against Alabama that saw him tie a school record with three home runs. Belza was a prep star at Cincinnati s famed Moeller High, which produced the likes of Ken Griffey Jr. and Barry Larkin. Hit Parade After appearing in just 12 games as a freshman in 2007 and missing the 2008 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, Kevin David blossomed into one of the Cowboys top hitters in David, spent the majority of his time behind the plate last season but also served as a first baseman and DH. He hit.311 and was second in the Big 12 with 23 doubles. A native of Baton Rouge, La., David finished third on the Cowboys with 47 RBIs, and he turned in a pair of seven-rbi games (vs. Western Illinois and Arkansas-Pine Bluff). David earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors on March 16 after a six-game stretch in which he hit.542 (13-for-24) with five doubles, a triple, a home run and 12 RBIs. He also scored five runs, walked seven times and had a.958 slugging percentage. During the six-game stretch, David collected multiple hits five times and also had RBIs in five of the six games. A native of Tupelo, Okla., which has a population of approximately 360, McCurry became a record-setting closer in his first collegiate season. With 10 saves in 2009, McCurry tied OSU s single-season record, which had been reached only twice previously (in 1982 and 1997). The 10-save total already ranks fifth on OSU s career list. In a team-high 28 appearances a year ago, McCurry was 4-1 with a team-best 2.16 ERA in 41.2 innings of work. He also racked up 54 strikeouts. In limited action at the plate, McCurry hit.355 with three home runs and 10 RBIs, and he is expected to battle for playing time on the infield as a sophomore. During his prep career, McCurry hit over 100 home runs and led Tupelo High School to three state championships. Strong Armed Pitching depth appears to be one of OSU s biggest strengths this season, and the staff is led by a solid group of veterans who established themselves as key performers last season. Thomas Keeling - Keeling was 5-1 in 16 appearances, including six starts, as a redshirt sophomore last season. The southpaw racked up 73 strikeouts in just 51.0 innings, and his strikeouts per nine innings would have ranked fourth nationally had he had three more innings of work to qualify for the NCAA minimum COWBO Y BASEBAL L Keeling earned his first career win at Arizona with a seven-inning, 12-strikeout effort. Brad Propst - Propst appeared in 15 games on the mound, all in relief, and was 1-1 with a 2.20 ERA in his first season with the Cowboys. The right-hander earned his first-career save against Arizona with two scoreless innings of work, and he picked up his first win against Missouri State. In 28.2 innings of work, Propst recorded 25 strikeouts. Uriah Fisher - As a freshman last season, the right-hander made 10 appearances, including three starts, and was 2-0 with two saves and a 3.49 ERA. He earned a win in his first-career start against Western Illinois. Short Hops The Cowboys set a school record with a.976 fielding percentage in That mark tied for the best in the Big 12 last season and ranked 10th nationally. OSU had 10 players named Academic All- Big 12 in 2009, the most for the program since a record 11 Cowboys earned the honor in The 516 strikeouts by the OSU pitching staff last season was the most by the Cowboys since the 1999 staff recorded a school-record 584. Last year s total marks just the sixth time an OSU pitching staff has eclipsed the 500- strikeout mark. OSU had 10 wins against ranked teams in 2009, including three wins over Top 10 teams (#6 Cal State Fullerton, #7 Baylor and #9 Texas). Frank Anderson ranks fourth on OSU s alltime coaching wins list with 233. He is 48 wins shy of third-place Tom Holiday s 281 victories. 10 OSU has had 10 players named to a USA Baseball National Team roster 7 50 win seasons by the Cowboys 6 Berths in the College World Series championship g a m e 3 Cowboys in the National College Baseball Hall of Fame Robin Ventura, Pete Incaviglia & Gary Ward 2 NCAA Super Regional appearances by the Cowboys 1999 & National championship for OSU, which came in Golden Spikes Award winner Robin Ventura in 1988 OKLAHOMA S TA TE 4
