10 A Message from Principal Donna Houser Welcome to the Baseball Season. We have a young team this year which has the potential to be very competitive in, this, our last year to face many of the teams in the current District 14-6A. Coach Prather is really excited about the talent that we have this year across all levels. Our young players are developing nicely under the mentorship of our upper classmen. We thank our seniors for their leadership and their commitment to Anderson Trojan Baseball over the past four years. We thank our coaches, Gilbert Prather, Darin Ramsey, Ron Davis, and Drew Nichols, for their hard work in preparing our team for competition this year. Our field needs constant attention, beyond what the district can provide, so these coaches are also a great field crew in their spare time. They deserve our thanks for their hard work to ensure that we have a quality program. We also need to thank our baseball booster club for working for almost two full years to secure a covered batting cage area. It has been a real challenge for these hard-working parents to get through the red tape of the city and our school district to get this facility built and we appreciate their efforts on behalf of our student-athletes. The players have truly enjoyed this wonderful addition to our baseball facility and, I might add, that all of the Anderson coaches have been seen taking batting practice there, as well. The support of the Anderson High School community for all of our athletic, fine arts, and academic programs remains overwhelming. We continue to be so grateful for the support and hard work of our parent community. I look forward to working with you to bring Anderson High School Baseball to the top of District 14-6A and to support the team as they work to make it into the playoffs. I extend my best wishes to all of the members of the Anderson Baseball team for a successful year. Sincerely, Donna Houser, Anderson High School Principal
11 About the Anderson Coaches Gilbert Prather Head Coach Coach Prather knew as a teenager that he wished to continue in sports as a career. Given his enjoyment of the coaches he encountered in Middle School and High School, he chose to actively pursue a career in coaching. Our varsity plays in a tournament called the Langerhans-Bratcher named after two great Central Texas baseball coaches. Bart Bratcher coached Coach Prather at Westwood High School. After high school, Coach Prather played college ball at Blinn and Texas State University. Upon completing his bachelor degree, Coach Prather head coached at Marlin High School and at Sul Ross State University as a graduate assistant. In 2008, Anderson hired Coach Prather as head baseball coach. He was attracted to the position at Anderson because of its successful and competitive program, a tradition he has been able to continue and grow. The baseball facility at Anderson High School is the best in Austin ISD because of his labor of love is a very busy year for the Prather family. His daughter Lindsey will be married in November. In May, his daughter Shelby graduates from Mary Hardin Baylor and will marry in June. His youngest daughter, Callie, is enjoying her freshman year at Texas A&M. Also in the education field, Coach Prather s wife, Melinda, serves in Adapted PE in Leander ISD. She serves as Head of Delegations for Special Olympics in that district, too. Darin Ramsey Assistant Varsity Coach From personal experience, Coach Ramsey greatly values the life lessons to be learned through athletics. Combining that belief with a heart to work with high school aged kids, teaching and coaching is a natural career path for him. Like Coach Prather, Coach Ramsey played under Bart Bratcher at Westwood High School. Coach Ramsey continued playing baseball after high school at Hill Junior College and Collin County Community College. He earned his bachelor degree from Texas State University and began coaching in Central Texas area. For five years, he and Coach Prather worked together at Cedar Park High School and he finally joined us here at Anderson High School in 2015 where he teaches Spanish, too. He and his beautiful wife, Adina, have four daughters: Taylor(21), Makenna(16), Natalie(8), and Skylar(2). Away from baseball, Coach Ramsey loves spending time with his family at parks, new restaurants, the beach or just hanging out. He has a passion for mission work having taken trips to hurricane-ravaged Galveston, tornadoravaged Mississippi, earthquake-ravaged Costa Rica, and Nicaragua, which wasn t ravaged by anything but a friend needed help starting a church! Ron Davis Junior Varsity 1 Coach Beginning his teaching career at College Station Middle School, Coach Davis affirmed his enjoyment of coaching as he worked with football, basketball, and track. While assisting in an SBS classroom, he discovered his passion for working with special education students. Soon he was able to complete his degree on scholarship to Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches. Upon completing his degree, Coach Davis was hired by AISD to work at Bedichek Middle School. In 2006 he transferred to Anderson High School pursuing coaching at the high school level. He has served football, softball and, in 2016, he joined baseball as the Junior Varsity 2 coach. He greatly values his relationships with his students and players and their families. JoBeth, who also works at Anderson, and Coach Davis have a daughter, Lillie, who is the light of their lives. When not coaching, he can be found at the barn watching Lillie ride. They have two dogs and a bunny, but Lillie recently announced that their family won t be complete until he buys her a horse! On the spectator sports front, Coach Davis is partial to Texas A&M.
12 About the Anderson Coaches Drew Nichols Junior Varsity 1 Coach When considering why he pursued coaching and teaching, Coach Nichols is quickly reminded of his father, who you might have seen around the ball field watching. Mike Nichols chose to take a job selling cars to support his family instead of finishing his degree and entering teaching and coaching himself. Throughout Coach Nichols youth, his father encouraged him in athletics and academics; he was successful at both at our very own Anderson High School! Following his father s example, Coach Nichols can be seen encouraging the current Anderson student-athletes to pursue excellence on the field and in the classroom. Born in Wichita, Kansas, Coach Nichols moved to Austin as a youth and attended schools you are familiar with: Hill and Davis Elementary, Murchison Middle School and Anderson High School. He was asked to attend Trinity University in San Antonio to play football. He earned his bachelor degree in History and Special Education from Texas State University. Currently he is completing a Master s Degree in Educational Leadership at the University of North Texas. In addition to coaching our Junior Varsity 1 baseball team, Coach Nichols leads Junior Varsity basketball. November through May, Coach Nichols can be found at Anderson six days a week coaching. When he does have free time, he enjoys experiencing Austin. He likes golfing, kayaking and hiking Austin s greenbelts with his two dogs. During the summer he tackles home improvement projects and heads to the lake; he hopes to be the proud owner of a boat before too long. Coach Ty Mangum Coach Ty Mangum received a baseball glove as his first gift from his dad, his first coach. He grew up around the game of baseball and has never lost his enjoyment of it. His experience allows him to demonstrate fundamentals of the game, while passionately encouraging the life-skills of leadership, teamwork, respect and sportsmanship, so that our young men become better members of society. Originally from Austin, Coach Mangum attended Cedar Park High School where he was coached by our Coach Prather and Coach Ramsey. He earned his bachelor in business from Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Currently he is completing coursework for his teacher certification in High School Social Studies while he works as a permanent substitute at Anderson High School. Fortunately for us, he ran into Coach Prather and expressed a willingness to help in the baseball program, so we have him as a volunteer assistant coach this year! Coach Mangum and his lovely Briana have a two year old daughter, Amelia, and a two year old dog named George, who is an Old English Sheepdog! When not coaching or teaching or studying or spending time with his family, Coach Mangum enjoys cooking, bicycling and running George through the neighborhood.
13 From the Anderson Baseball Booster Club Booster Club President s Message On behalf of the Anderson High School Baseball Booster Club, I send this message with great enthusiasm as we begin another exciting year of baseball! This marks the first season the team has been able to use the highly anticipated indoor batting facility, and we couldn t be more pleased. Thanks to the generosity of past and present AHS parents, staff, and the corporate community, we were also able to purchase new L-screens, sock nets, tunnel nets and numerous other needed items and repairs. While our facility is now fully functional and allows our teams to hold batting practice indoors, our wish list still includes eventual new turf for the batting facility and other upgrades. Because of our new 501(c)(3) status, we look forward to increased fund raising and a reduction of work for volunteers. Our AHS Booster Club is composed of volunteer members who support the Anderson Trojan Baseball program. We want to welcome the new freshman players and parents and ask that you consider joining us in supporting AHS baseball with your time, talent, and resources. You can help us and make a difference! Baseball is a game much like life and these young men will grow and mature in many ways during the year(s). We are looking forward to a successful season and hopeful of making the playoffs in our last year in a very competitive district. On behalf of the AHS Booster Club, I would like to thank all the efforts of the parents, staff, and community for supporting these student athletes. I look forward to seeing all of you at the ballpark. Go Trojans!
