ODU has gone 0-2 in each of the last two C-USA Tournaments and is currently on a 7-game postseason losing streak. The Monarchs have not won the opening game of a conference tournament since defeating Georgia State, 5-2, in the CAA Tournament in 2007, when ODU was the No. 1 seed. ODU has also not won a conference touranment title since 1996 (CAA). WINNING SERIES Old Dominion went 12-2 in weekend series during the regular season, including a 4-1 record in road series. The Monarchs lone series losses were dropping 2-of-3 vs. LA Tech and at FAU. Overall, Old Dominion won its first eight series to begin the season, marking the first time an ODU team has accomplished that feat since 2006 ( 06 team won 10 straight series to open season). REBOUNDING OFF LOSSES Old Dominion has lost consecutive games only three times this season (April 4-5; at #18 Virginia, at VMI & April 16-21; vs. LA Tech, at #16 Southern Miss; May 16-18; vs. Virginia Tech, at FAU) and have yet to lose three straight. Overall, the Monarchs are 15-3 when coming off of a loss this season. LATE-INNING MAGIC Old Dominion has 12 wins when tied or trailing after the sixth inning this season, including four walkoff wins. The highlights of the Monarchs come-from-behind victories have been (1) an series-clinching win over FIU when ODU, trailing 10-2, scored nine runs in the bottom of the seventh on Senior Day, (2) a 13-run eighth inning against Princeton when trailing 4-1, (3) a walkoff grand slam by Shaun Wood against his former team, West Virginia, and (4) a four-run top of the 9th at FAU when trailing 8-5 in Game 2. On the other hand, Old Dominion has yet to blow a late-game lead this season, as the Monarchs are 24-0 when leading after the sixth inning. IMPROVED HITTING FROM 2016 Old Dominion is hitting.294 as a team, which is up 41 points from last season, when the Monarchs hit.253 as a team. Overall, four players are hitting.330 or better. Last year, only two Monarchs hit.300 or better and neither of which were above.330. The.294 average would be the highest by an ODU team since 2008 (.298). BALANCED OFFENSE Seven different players have 30 or more RBIs for Old Dominion this season, including a team-leading 55 by Zach Rutherford. To put in to perspective, Old Dominion had only two players with 30+ RBIs last year (Rutherford & Connor Myers, now with AA Cubs). EXPLOSIVE OFFENSE Old Dominion has scored 10+ runs in 27 percent (15 out of the 55 games) of the games this season. The Monarchs are 14-1 when scoring 10+, with the only loss coming in a slugfest loss at VMI. Old Dominion scored a season-high 21 runs (most by an ODU team since 2007) vs. FIU. In addition, Old Dominion has yet to be shut out this season. SCORING FIRST Old Dominion has scored in the first inning in 44 percent (24 out of the 55 games) of its games this season. When scoring in the first, the Monarchs are On the other hand, opponents have scored in the first in only 31 percent (17 games) of the games and opponents are just 8-9 when scoring in the first inning. Overall, ODU is 24-6 when scoring the game s first run. DOUBLES WIN BALLGAMES Head coach Chris Finwood has been quoted as saying doubles are what win ballgames. Old Dominion has hit 125 doubles this season, which ranks eighth in the nation. Five different players have 10 or more doubles, including a team-leading 25 by Zach Rutherford (school record is 27 by Rob Morgan in 1995). Rutherford s 25 doubles rank third in the nation. STRONG SENIOR STARTING PITCHING Seniors Sam Sinnen and Adam Bainbridge, the Friday and Saturday starters respectively, have been a key reason for the Monarchs success. Sinnen and Bainbridge have both gone five innings in all but one start combined and have kept the pressure off of a relatively young bullpen (6 of the 11 pitchers who have appeared in 10 or more games are newcomers). While Bainbridge was dominant early in the season (was 6-1 with a 0.99 ERA thru April 15), Sinnen has been excelling late, going 3-1 with a 2.28 ERA in his last four starts. BIG SERIES WINS ODU has picked up several impressive series wins. ODU handed No. 16 Southern Miss only its second series loss of 2017 and its first home conference series loss since 2015 (first road series win over a ranked opponent for ODU since 2000, when ODU swept #21 East Carolina in Tony Guzzo s 2nd season). ODU also swept Rice to open C-USA play, marking only the second time Rice has been swept in a C-USA series since In non-conference play, ODU also took 2-of-3 from West Virginia, who is 20th in the RPI. GOOD IN CLOSE GAMES Old Dominion has found a way to win close games this season. The team is 10-3 in one-run games and 14-6 in games decided by two or less runs. Old Dominion is also 2-0 in extra-inning games. RANKED IN TOP 25 The Monarchs cracked the Top 25 for the first time since 2007 on May 8, coming in at No. 25 in the D1 Baseball Top 25. The ranking marks the 14th time in program history that an Old Dominion team has been ranked at some point during the season. ODU came in at No. 25 again in last week s (May 15) D1 Baseball rankings, before moving out of the rankings this week. RECRUITING THE AREA Head coach Chris Finwood and the Old Dominion coaching staff have excelled at recruiting the state of Virginia and, in particular, the Hampton Roads area (Virginia Beach, Norfolk, etc.). 25 of the 36 players on the ODU roster are from Virginia, including 15 from Hampton Roads. The Hampton Roads area has a rich tradition in baseball. Current MLB players from the area include David Wright, Ryan Zimmerman, Justin and BJ Upton, Michael Cuddyer and Mark Reynolds.
