3 Pitt Softball Looks for Continued Success in 2016 Panthers predicted to finish seventh in the ACC Preseason Coaches Poll SEASON OUTLOOK Freshly removed from a season designed for the record books, the University of Pittsburgh softball team looks to ride a wave of momentum into 2016, as it relies on a group of seasoned veterans to build on a handful of historical accomplishments. The Panthers pushed for national attention in 2015 with clutch collective performances in postseason play. Before accepting a bid to compete in the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever, the Panthers upset higher seeds Notre Dame and North Carolina en route to the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship game, where they fell a few runs shy of taking down the No. 1 seed, Florida State. Under the leadership of head coach Holly Aprile and staff, who were named the NFCA Mid-Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year, Pitt compiled its winningest season in program history in Beginning her eighth year at the helm, Aprile will call upon eight returning starters to recycle the production of the graduating class of 2015 in an effort to meet lofty expectations that have been set for them in RETURNING RANKS SENIORS Returning for her fifth year of eligibility as one of six Pitt seniors is second baseman Maggie Sevilla. Sevilla has played in a total of 160 games over her last four years, starting in all but two. In 2015, her hits total (71) tied for fourth in the ACC, while her fielding assists total (133) ranked third in the conference and her batting average (.359) led the team. Jenna Modic is a versatile senior infielder who could also toe the rubber as a reliable pitcher in Modic served as the Panthers designated player in 2015, where she earned All-ACC First Team and NFCA Third Team All-Mid Atlantic selections. She hit.538, recording seven hits, eight RBI and two home runs including a grand slam during Pitt s four-game run in the 2015 NCAA Tournament. Pitt will also feature stability behind the plate, as Shelby Pickett will assume responsibility at catcher. Pickett had a successful showing at the plate in 2015, leading the team in on-base percentage (.427) and notching a.350 batting average for the year. She holds the Pitt all-time records in single season at-bats (203), runs (50) and hits (71). Pickett s season earned her Second Team All-ACC, ACC All-Tournament Team and NFCA Second Team All-Mid Atlantic honors. Known for her stout defense, left fielder Ashlee Sills rounds out an impressive brigade of seniors. Sills started every game but one in 2015, and her name has appeared in a good share of starting lineups throughout her career. Seniors Kathryn Duran and Morgan Choe also return for their final seasons with the Panthers. JUNIORS Pitt s roster contains a lone junior this year in Kaitlin Manuel. Manuel, one of seven California natives on the Panthers roster, committed just one error in 2015 at first base, where she started in all but one contest. She tied Sills for the team lead in steals, swiping seven bases in nine attempts. SOPHOMORES Pitt s sophomore class boasts four players with starting experience, including pitcher Kayla Harris, who complimented the production of Savannah King last season. Harris appeared in 35 games in 2015 and got the nod from Aprile to start 18. Harris led the ACC in saves (3) while tallying 13 wins, nine complete games and two shutouts. Another returning starter for Pitt is McKayla Taylor. Taylor is a power-hitting shortstop who, through 59 games played last season, placed fifth in the ACC in home runs (14). The Cypress Calif., native was tabbed Second Team All-ACC in her debut season. Other returning sophomores include Erin Hershman and Giorgiana Zeremenko, who both saw playing time last season. FRESHMEN The incoming freshmen class consists of five players, who will all see playing time out of the gate in Alexis Solak is an infielder capable of playing many positions. She has a strong arm and could see the bulk of her innings at third base. At the plate, Solak brings potential power to the Panthers. Olivia Gray will begin her collegiate career at different spots on the diamond. Gray, who hit.554 as a high school senior, is in line to see starting time in right field. Massachusetts native Sarah Dawson will be a new face on the mound for Pitt, and will see time in addition to Harris and Modic. Other incoming freshmen include Taylor Myers and Marissa DeMatteo who will also fight for starting positions. PREDICTED ORDER OF FINISH The University of Pittsburgh softball team was predicted to finish seventh out of 11 total teams in the ACC Softball Preseason Coaches Poll as announced by the league office Monday evening. Florida State, who was the 2015 ACC Champion and ranked 10th in the 2016 USA Today/NFCA Preseason Coaches Poll, was predicted to finish first for the second consecutive season. The Seminoles received 99 points and nine first-place votes in the poll. No. 24 Notre Dame received 92 points, including two first-place votes, while Louisville and No. 23 NC State tied for third (82 points), and North Carolina (69 points) rounded out the top five. 3
