Northwest Arkansas scored four times in the third inning against Jake Thompson but left the bases loaded to keep Frisco within shouting distance. The Riders tallied a pair in the fourth inning and another in the seventh to make it a one-run game. They loaded the bases with one out against Malcom Culver and tied the game on Drew Robinson s RBI single. Nomar Mazara then scored on a wild pitch to give Frisco its first lead and Luis Mendez and Nick Williams each produced two-run hits to make it 9-4. Denton native Hunter Dozier hit a two-run homer in the ninth to get Northwest Arkansas to within three, but David Martinez struck out Bubba Starling to end the contest and force a rubber game in the series tonight. Today s Pitching Matchup: The Riders and Naturals play the series finale this evening with Andrew Faulkner pitching against Cody Reed. Faulkner is coming off two sub-par outings in which he has allowed ten runs on 13 hits and five walks in nine innings. Prior to this spell, he had posted a 2.20 ERA over a five start span. He lost in Springdale on April 21, allowing eight runs (four earned) on eight hits in 2.2 innings. Reed is making his second Double-A start tonight; he earned the win on Sunday against Tulsa, allowing one run on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts in six innings. He started the season with Advanced-A Wilmington, where he made 13 appearances (ten starts) and went 5-5 with a 2.14 ERA (16 ER/67.1 IP), 62 hits allowed, 18 walks, 65 strikeouts and a.243 average against. Left-handed batters hit just.162 against the southpaw in the Carolina League, where he was a mid-season All-Star. Reed entered the season ranked the Royals 26th-best prospect according to MLB. com. He spent with Lexington, where he went 3-9 with a 5.46 ERA (51 ER/84 IP), 105 hits allowed, 36 walks and 58 strikeouts. In his first pro season in, he went 0-1 with a 6.07 ERA in 15 games (6 starts). Reed was a second round pick ($1,198,500 bonus) in out of Northwest Mississippi Community College, where he improved his stock after going undrafted out of Horn Lake (Miss.) High School. He saw his fastball velocity increase from the mid-80s in high school to the low-to-mid-90s in college; it now sits mph, touching 96, with some sinking and cutting action. He also throws a mid-80s slider and a changeup. Rockin the Suburgs: New Rider Alex Burg has gotten off to a good start in the Texas League, going 8 for 22 with two home runs since his promotion from High Desert last week. He blasted a solo homer to right field in the ninth inning on Thursday for his 17th overall this season, tying him for the fourth-most in Minor League Baseball this season (Chattanooga s Adam Brett Walker II leads the minors with 23). Burg is also first in the minors in slugging (.606), tenth in on-base percentage (.421) and third in OPS (1.027). The former Marlins and Giants farmhand was a California League mid-season All-Star after ranking among the CL leaders in a variety of offensive stats. He ranks first among full-season Rangers farmhands in homers, second in average (.308) and fourth in RBI (46). Moving day: On Friday the Rangers announced that Frisco outfielder Jake Skole has been traded to the New York Yankees for cash considerations. The Atlanta native was selected 15th overall in 2010 from Blessed Trinity High School in Georgia. The left-handed batter hit.218 with four home runs and 12 RBI in 57 games for Frisco in. He played the entire campaign for the RoughRiders, hitting.216 in 103 games as the club s primary centerfielder. In 160 Texas League games, Skole hit.217/.303/.330 with ten home runs, 24 doubles, three triples, 45 RBI and 16 steals; he was Texas Minor League Defender of the Year in. To fill Skole s roster spot, the Rangers have promoted outfielder Zach Cone from Advanced-A High Desert. Cone was selected in the supplemental first round (37th overall) of the 2011 MLB Draft from the University of Georgia. The right-hander batted.286 with 15 home runs, 51 RBI, 45 runs scored and six stolen bases in 73 games for the Mavericks and was named the California League Player of the Week in mid-june. His 15 home runs were tied for fourth-most in the CL and are two shy of his career-best in a single season. All-Star report: Frisco placed eight players on the South Division squad for the 79th Annual Texas League All- Star Game, which was played on Tuesday night at Corpus Christi s Whataburger Field. Joey Gallo (promotion) and Jorge Alfaro (injury) did not participate in the game, which was won by the North Division, 9-4. Northwest Arkansas Jorge Bonifacio was named the MVP of the contest after hitting a tiebreaking, two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning. As for the RoughRiders, Nick Williams (0 for 2), Nomar Mazara (0 for 2) and Drew Robinson (0 for 1) went hitless. Pitchers Jake Thompson (1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB), Jesus Pirela (0.1 IP, H, 2 R, BB, SO) and David Martinez (1 IP, H, 0 R) also got into the game for the South squad. Feeling edgy: Saturday night s 2-1 Riders win marked another close call for the club, which has played almost exclusively tight games over the past two weeks. Since June 15, 13 of Frisco s 16 games have been decided by three runs or fewer; seven have been one-run games (Riders are 3-4 in these contests) and four have been two-run games (2-2 record). The RoughRiders are 6-10 in this 16-game span and this season are 9-12 (.429) in one-run games; only San Antonio has a worse record (8-13,.381) in the closest of contests. The first 900 are the toughest: April 13 s victory marked the 900th in RoughRiders team history, and Frisco s all-time record is (.534). The RoughRiders have finished.500 or better in nine consecutive seasons. The last time Frisco finished below.500 was the only time in team history, back in 2005 when it finished The streak of non-losing seasons is by far the longest in the Texas League; every other team in the circuit has had at least one losing season in the last three years. The streak is the longest in Double-A and the third-longest among all 120 full-season minor league clubs, exceeded only by the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats (12 straight non-losing seasons) and the Advanced-A San Jose Giants (11). Including teams that play in short-season leagues, Frisco s streak is the sixth longest; the Elizabethton Twins (26), Brooklyn Cyclones (14) and AZL Giants (14) have the longest such streaks in stateside Minor League Baseball.
