But with the game on the line, Corpus shortstop Carlos Correa stepped up in a big way with a three-run, walk-off double to deliver the Hooks a 5-4 win over the Riders. Frisco got seven brilliant shutout innings from starting pitcher Jake Thompson, who yielded just five hits and a walk with a career-high 12 strikeouts. The offense supported him with four runs spread between the third and fifth innings, the final tally coming on a Jorge Alfaro solo home run. After Thompson departed, The Hooks scored an unearned run against Cody Kendall in the eighth and loaded the bases against Josh McElwee in the ninth. A bases loaded walk made it 4-2 Frisco before Jesus Pirela entered the contest. He struck out Tyler Heineman, but then Correa came up to deliver his dramatics. The first walk-off defeat of the season for Frisco dropped the Riders to 0-7 in series finales this season. Today s Pitching Matchup: Frisco begins a four-game series with San Antonio tonight and has Chad Bell on the mound while the Missions counter with Zack Segovia. Bell is making his second start of the season after beginning the year working out of the bullpen. The left-hander beat San Antonio last Wednesday with seven innings of three hit, two run ball at Wolff Stadium. Bell has struck out 25 batters in 19 innings this season. In four games (two starts) against San Antonio three years ago, he went 0-0 with a 4.91 ERA and a.189 average against. The Knoxville, Tenn. native is back in the Texas League after his career arc was derailed by Tommy John surgery in. He spent last year at three different levels (Hickory, Myrtle Beach, Round Rock), but the bulk of his season was spent in the Carolina League. Overall, he was 8-3 with a 4.19 ERA (41 ER/88 IP), 103 hits allowed, 50 strikeouts, 28 walks and nine homers allowed over 20 games (19 starts). Bell shot up through the farm system in going from Advanced-A to Triple-A in the span of just half a season. He posted a 2.84 ERA with the Riders that year and overall was 8-7 with a 3.48 ERA in innings. The Rangers drafted him in the 14th round in 2009 out of Walters State Community College and signed him away from a transfer commitment to the University of Tennessee. Segovia signed with the Padres in February and will be making his start of the season tonight. He tossed five scoreless innings in a win against the Riders on Thursday. He spent most of pitching in the Mexican League for Mexico and Monclova (6-6, 4.64 ERA), but made two starts at the end of the season for Round Rock (0-1, 8.64 ERA, 8.1 IP, 13 H, 9 R). It marked the first time Segovia had pitched in affiliated ball since, as he spent with Monclova and York of the Atlantic League. The Padres are the seventh Major League club that Segovia has pitched for as a minor leaguer. He was originally drafted by the Phillies in the second round of out of Forney (Texas) High School in 2002 and missed the entire 2004 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. Segovia made his big league debut for Philadelphia on April 8, 2007 at Florida, taking the loss after allowing five runs in five innings. He was sent down after the start and was released in mid-june of 2008 before getting picked up by Washington. He spent the 2009 season in the Nationals farm system - getting back up to the big leagues that season (1-0, 7.84 ERA in eight relief appearances) - and was released in December of that year. Segovia spent the next three seasons with the Yankees, Brewers and Tigers systems, respectively. Road trip recap: Despite the sour ending to the road trip, it was a successful stint away from Dr Pepper Ballpark for the RoughRiders. Frisco went 6-2 on the trip, which featured mostly close ballgames. Seven of the contests were decided by three runs or fewer, including all six of the wins. Five of the Riders victories went down to the wire, with the tying or winning run on base in those contests. Frisco won the first three games of both series against San Antonio and Corpus Christi, only to drop the series finale. The RoughRiders twice missed out on their first series sweep of the season. They last swept a team on August 15-17, at Tulsa and their last sweep of a four-game series was May 16-19, vs. Midland. Their last four-game sweep on the road came June 25-28, 2010 at Corpus Christi. Strongest man alive: What began as a hot stretch has officially become a power trend for Drew Robinson, who blasted his seventh home run of the season on Sunday afternoon. The three-run blast was his first non-solo shot of the season and he is now first among all Texas Leaguers (and Rangers farmhands) in homers. He is also tied for second in all of Minor League Baseball in dingers, trailing only Fresno s Preston Tucker s ten. Robinson is also third in the TL in walks (19, tied for fifth in MiLB), tied for sixth in steals (6, tied for first among Rangers) and first in HR/AB ratio (1/10.29). Hip hip, Jorge!: Jorge Alfaro continued to produce on the road trip, belting a solo home run on Monday night for his second dinger of the season. During the road trip he hit.321 (9 for 28) with two home runs, four RBI, three runs scored and a steal. His nine-game hitting streak ended on Saturday night, over which he hit.389. The streak is tied for the fifth-longest in the Texas League this year and was the longest by any Rider in. Alfaro has driven in seven runs over his last ten games after not collecting an RBI in his first nine games of. Behind the plate, he threw out two baserunners on Monday; after opponents were successful in six of their first seven steal attempts against Alfaro this season, the Colombian backstop has thrown out four of the last six. The first 900 are the toughest: April 13 s victory marked the 900th in RoughRiders team history, and Frisco s all-time record is (.538). The RoughRiders have finished.500 or better in nine consecutive seasons. The last time Frisco finished below.500 was the only time in team history, back in 2005 when it finished The streak of non-losing seasons is by far the longest in the Texas League; every other team in the circuit has had at least one losing season in the last three years. The streak is the longest in Double-A and the third-longest among all 120 full-season minor league clubs, exceeded only by the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats (12 straight non-losing seasons) and the Advanced-A San Jose Giants (11). Including teams that play in short-season leagues, Frisco s streak is the sixth longest; the Elizabethton Twins (26), Brooklyn Cyclones (14) and AZL Giants (14) have the longest such streaks in stateside Minor League Baseball. Slick Mik: Joe Mikulik is in his first year as Frisco s manager, replacing Texas League Manager of the Year Jason Wood. Wood was named the skipper of the Triple-A Round Rock Express after former Express and Riders manager Steve Buechele became the Rangers bench coach. Mikulik managed the Advanced-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans to a Carolina League-best record last year and a runner-up finish in the CL playoffs. This marks Mikulik s third season with the Rangers organization and 17th season as a minor league manager. He entered the season with a career record of 1, (.526) with the bulk of his managerial experience coming at Single-A Asheville, where he spent 13 seasons as the Tourists skipper. He is the South Atlantic League s all-time winningest manager and was inducted into the circuit s Hall of Fame in Mikulik is a native of Weimer, Texas and currently makes his home in nearby Keller.
