1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (29-17, 17-7 road) First Place, CL Southern, 4.5 GA at Carolina Mudcats (22-23, home) Third place, CL Southern, 6.5 GB Saturday, May 24, :00 p.m. Five County Stadium Zebulon, NC P Sam Wolff (4-3, 3.10) vs. LP Shawn Morimando (5-2, 3.83) Game #47 oad Game #25 Night Game #39 Game vs. Carolina #2 WNN AM 1450 ESPN Myrtle Beach TuneIn adio App MiLB.tv LAST TIME OUT: The Pelicans held an early lead but allowed the final six runs of the game in a 7-2 loss to the Carolina Mudcats. CIS GAIA knocked out his first home run of the year, but LUIS PAA allowed a season-high seven runs in just four innings...carolina s COLE SULSE tied a season-high six innings and fanned a season-high nine batters...garia s homer but the Pelicans ahead 2-1 in the third, but the lead was very short lived. Parra surrendered a two-run homer of his own in the bottom of the inning. After a four-pitch leadoff walk, Todd ankins ripped a homer to left to put Carolina ahead for good...jason KNAPP (3 IP) and ABEL DE LOS SANTOS (1) held the Mudcats scoreless and hitless over the rest of the ballgame, but the Birds couldn t muster a rally...parra suffered the defeat. After a 3-0 start, he is now just 4-3 on the year. Sulser (1-4) earned the win, his first. FOGETTING WAT IT FEELS LIKE: The loss last night was rare in that it was a sound defeat. The Pelicans hadn t lost by a game by more than two runs since May 4 and have only lost a game by more than four runs three times all year, including last night s five-run defeat. It was tied for the largest margin of defeat since Opening Night when the Pelicans lost by seven. They also lost by five runs on May 4 (6-1 vs. Frederick). Ten of the 17 losses have come by two runs or less. SEEKING TE EBOUND: The Birds are trying to avoid losing consecutive games for the first time Since May 4-5 and for the first time against the same team since April 16, when they were swept in a doubleheader against Potomac. Only one other time have they lost back-to-back games against the same team (even across multiple series). That came when they lost four straight to Salem to begin the season. FOU INNINGS? TAT S ALL E TEW?: The author of the first nineinning complete game by a Pelicans pitcher in nearly two years, Luis Parra, tossed the shortest outing by a Pelicans starter in the last twenty games. Excluding Jason Knapp s spot start on Saturday (three innings), Pelicans starting pitching had gone more than four innings in 20 straight games. VICTO PAYANO tossed just four frames on May 1 in a 9-5 Pelicans win at home against Frederick. Pelicans starters have failed to go five innings on 13 occasions (Buckel 3, Faulkner 1, Gonzalez 1, Knapp 1, Parra 2, Payano 5). YOU CANT PEDICT BALL: Center fielder CIS GAIA knocked in both of the Pelicans runs yesterday with his seventh career home run. It was his first home run in 299 at-bats, spanning 76 ballgames. is last home run came against the Eugene Emeralds (Northwest League, SDP) on July 6, 2013 when Garia was with the Spokane Indians. It was the longest homerless streak on the team. That title now belongs to ANSE ALBETO who has gone 285 ABs between homers. JOEY GALLO went deep 32 times between Garia long balls. MAY BOMBES: Leading the Carolina League in homers, the Pelicans long-ball barrage has been on full display. The team has launched 25 homers this month, already passing their total from April (18). The club has homered 22 times in the last 16 games and at least once in each of the last three games. E S GOING STEAKING: NICK WILLIAMS is currently riding an tengame hitting streak, the longest by any Pelican this season, passing the previous high set by JOGE ALFAO. Williams is hitting is hitting.390 over the streak with five doubles and a homer, along with five BI. e has hit safely in ten straight, 17 of 18, and 19 of 21. e is hitting.349 in May, raising his average from.229 to.289. The streak is the second longest active in the league, trailing on Wilmington outfielder Bubba Starling who has strung together 12 straight with a hit. JOEY GALLO has reached base safely in 11 straight games. TE ENDESON AMME: Last week, JOEY GALLO was named the Texas angers Minor League Player of the Month for April, his second player of the month award in a row (won Aug/Sept 13 for AZL angers/ ickory). e is the third Pelicans player to win the award and first since Andrew Clark in August e has also won Carolina League Player of the Week on Monday, his third time winning the award. Among active qualifying players, he is first in the minors in slugging and OPS, tied for fourth in runs scored, and tied for third in walks. e leads the Carolina League in average, runs scored, homers, runs batted in, walks, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, extra-base hits, and total bases. OME ISTOY: Third baseman JOEY GALLO led all of minor league baseball in 2013 with 40 home runs, and is on pace for 54 homers this season which would be the most in the affiliated minors since There were three 54+ homer seasons that year in the minors, but only one by an affiliated player. That was DICK STUAT who launched 66 in 141 games for the Pirates Class A affiliate, the Lincoln Chiefs of the Midwest League. Stuart went on to hit 228 major league home runs...the all-time minor league home run record is in the hands of JOE BAUMAN who hit 72 in 1954 for the oswell ockets...as he has for most of the year, Gallo leads all of professional baseball...gallo has more homers than 11 full-season minor league teams, including two teams in the Carolina League (Wilmington-11 and Lynchburg-16)...With his three-homer game on Friday, Gallo has homered multiple times in a game on 13 occasions in his career now (2 in 2012, 7 in 2013, 4 this season) and on consecutive days 21 times (13 in 2012, six in 2013, two this year)...no Pelicans hitter had ever had a three homer game; Gallo has done it twice in a Myrtle Beach uniform (and four times in his career)...is 18 home runs already ranks fourth on the Pelicans singleseason record list; with six more he would sit in second, trailing only Cody Johnson who hit 32 in 2009 for the Birds. STUTTING TEI FEATES: The Pelicans roster currently features six players highlighted in Baseball America s list of the angers Top 30 prospects, including four of the top 5, and three in the overall top 100 in MiLB. Catcher JOGE ALFAO (ranked No. 2 in the angers Top 30, No. 54 in the overall Top 100), NICK WILLIAMS (3, 97) and third baseman JOEY GALLO (4, 60) rank in the top 100. The other four players in the Texas Top 30 are Ps ALEX CI CI GONZALEZ (5), JOSE LECLEC (16), and LP ALEXANDE CLAUDIO (27). Former big leaguer Dave Collins went there as well. Collins played and was the manager of the Salem Avalanche (now the ed Sox) in 2001, when the club was a Colorado affiliate. e was also a big league first base coach with the Cardinals ( 91-92), the eds ( 99-00), and the Marlins ( 10). Wolff is the only current minor leaguer to play for the Stevens aiders, where the mascot is know as The aider Guy. Like Ellis and Wolff, however, most elite baseball players do not play for Stevens but rather American Legion Post 22, as South Dakota s climate does not afford a long high school season. Stevens was ranked by Sports Illustrated in 2005 as the #1 Athletic igh School in the state of the South Dakota and the 41st best school nationally for activities. The school has won over 100 state titles, with Track and Field dominating in both boys and girls competition. The boys won 10 straight titles from 95-04; although Wolff never played high school baseball, he was on the Track team, in addition to the football team. e was an all-conference basketball selection in his Junior and Senior seasons. Stevens igh also boasts notable alums Becky ammon, a six-time WNBA All-Star with the New York Liberty and the San Antonio Silver Stars, Olympic gold medalist wrestler andy Lewis, former NBA sharpshooter Eric Piatkowski, as well as The Dukes of azzard regular Catherine Bach (Daisy). The high school band has played in several European countries, the ose Parade, and at Mile igh Stadium, the home of the Denver Broncos. BASEBALL BLOODLINES SINGLE GAME IGS Season igh Career igh Sam s father Steve played professional baseball as well. A second baseman and shortstop, Steve played during the seasons in the Padres system after the Friars selected him in the 13th round of the 1983 draft out of Oral oberts University. e was a career.253 hitter and never hit a home run his son has yet to allow one as a pro. Steve played for the Spokane Indians (now a angers affiliate), the Miami Marlins (a now defunct team formerly in the Florida State League who became the Miami Miracle and moved to Fort Myers and became the Fort Myers Miracle in 1992, where the team is now a Twins affiliate and houses Minnesota s Spring Training), and the eno Padres (also no longer around, were in the California League). Steve was Legion baseball teammates with current Frisco oughiders Pitching Coach Jeff Andrews (American Legion Post 22). Sam Wolff played for the same Legion post as well, which has had 19 players drafted by Major League teams over its history.
