4 BRONCOS HAVE POTENTIAL IN PROVEN STARS by Brandon Rebboah As the spring approaches the Bronco Baseball team is hard at work getting ready for what they hope will be successful season. The Santa Clara roster is filled with new talent which includes two MLB Draft picks to complement a nucleolus of returning upperclassmen. All-America sluggers, Tommy Medica and Geoff Klein, join No. 1 starter Nate Garcia as the leaders of a team that consists of 20 first year players, including 14 true freshmen. Led by ninth-year head coach Mark O Brien, the Broncos should figure into the West Coast Conference title race, with the team s aim to qualify for postseason play. The 2010 schedule has been crafted to test them the team throughout the season. The Broncos open the season Friday, February 19, against the University of Nevada. After the Nevada series, the Broncos travel to play at the University of Houston. One of the things we ll always do here is schedule quality non-conference opponents, said O Brien. This year we travel out to Houston which means getting us out of our comfort zone, and into an environment that we might not necessarily see on the West Coast. If we reach our potential and make it into the postseason, I want our guys to be used to that Season Preview Medica, who has twice been named a First Team All-WCC catcher and was the league s Freshman of the Year in There are a lot of good teams, a lot of well coached teams. It ll definitely be a fight. Both Medica and Klein have taken on the role of developing some of the Santa Clara s newest players most all who ve come to the Mission Campus directly from high school. Sacramento area signee Pat Stover was selected in the 17th round of the 2009 MLB Draft after hitting.451 and slugging.756 as a senior at Rocklin High School last spring. True freshman outfielder Matt Ozanne was also drafted by MLB in June but instead chose to attend Santa Clara. There is going to be some adversity during the year, there always is. How our leadership handles it may be the difference for us this season. --SCU Head Coach Mark O Brien. We have a lot of young guys on the team, a lot of new guys, that need to get adjusted to D-1 baseball, says Klein. The game is lot quicker than high school or junior college. We have to get them used to it, help them out with their work in the cage or bullpen, and show them how to prepare to get them ready to play real games. I think it helps coming from us rather than the coaches. While the team has aspirations for postseason play and will play some tough opponents, O Brien s philosophy is not to highlight any specific games as key games. For me, you never want to go into a game saying this is a huge game, says O Brien. We try to treat each game equally; it goes back to our philosophy of one out at a time, one inning at a time, one game at a time. O Brien stresses the importance and influence his leaders will play in the team s success. Medica, Klein and Garcia must all perform to their capabilities, which not only includes leading by example, but also motivating their teammates to perform to a high level as well. Upperclassmen (l-r) Tommy Medica, Nate Garcia and Geoff Klein have already established themselves as three of the best players in school history. Santa Clara s non-conference opponents also include some of the premier teams in California Stanford University, Cal State University, Fullerton and Fresno State University. In addition, the Broncos home field at Stephen Schott Stadium will also host the first annual Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament, a duel site venue co-hosted by San Jose State University. I think it s extremely important that we play teams that will prepare us for our conference and I think we ve done that, adds O Brien. We ll be tested early and we ll be tested often. It s hard not to be excited about the schedule and upcoming season, especially considering the caliber of the players O Brien and his staff have assembled on the 2010 roster. The heart of Santa Clara s batting order features two players who have won WCC batting titles: junior Tommy Medica and senior Geoff Klein. Medica who played for the USA National Team in 2007 has fully recovered from a shoulder injury that kept him sidelined in Klein is coming off an All-WCC season in which he hit.373 with 21 doubles. It s always going to be a battle at this level, especially in the WCC, says I have to live up to my potential, says Klein, a preseason All-America honorable mention pick by Ping!Baseball. I have to hold myself accountable to what I m capable of. After that, I think my biggest responsibility is to do the same for everyone else on the team. There is going to be some adversity during the year, there always is. How our leadership handles it may be the difference for us this season, says O Brien. Medica, Klein Tabbed as Preseason All-Americans Santa Clara s Tommy Medica and Geoff Klein were named honorable mention preseason All-America catchers by Ping!Baseball, the online publication announced. Medica returns for his redshirt junior season as one of the nation s most accomplished collegiate catchers. The San Jose native and Bellarmine College Preparatory alumnus played for the USA National Team in 2007 following an All- America season as a true freshman. Klein took over the catching duties for Medica last season and turned in one of the best offensive seasons in Santa Clara s 125-year baseball history. Klein won the 2009 West Coast Conference batting crown, hitting.379 with 21 doubles. Klein owns a.343 career batting average, which ranks 8th all-time in the SCU record books Santa Clara Baseball

The win was a savory one as he watched his team defeat the second-ranked Stanford Cardinal 2-0 in Sunken Diamond, giving him his second career win over his former team. The three years prior to joining the Broncos, O Brien served as an assistant coach at Stanford. O Brien assisted with all aspects of the program, as the Cardinal s hitting and fielding instructor and handled the duties of first base coach. O Brien was a critical component to the recruiting efforts while at Stanford. The recruited class in 2001 was ranked No. 1 in the nation, while the classes in 1999 and 2000 were ranked in the top-10. His talents of recruiting can be traced back even to his earlier days at De Anza and Cal Poly. At De Anza, O Brien was able to recruit 12 local high school seniors within a two-week period, while helping all nine sophomores already on the team continue on to four-year institutions. While at Cal Poly, O Brien assisted in recruiting three-straight classes that were ranked in the top-40 by Collegiate Baseball. In his one season as head coach at De Anza, O Brien led the Dons to a third-place finish in the Coast Conference. At Cal Poly, he served as recruiting coordinator, academic advisor and third base coach, as well as hitting and infield instructor. During the summers of 1996 and 1997, O Brien served as head coach of the Anchorage Bucs in the Alaska Summer League. He led the Bucs to a record and a league championship in 1996, while coaching four eventual first-round draft picks (Matt Ginter, Danny Peoples, Mark Redman and Alvie Shepard). Throughout his coaching career O Brien has helped over 77 players advance on to professional baseball, including 10 first-round draft picks.
