4 4 Season Preview R eturning to the helm of the Miami baseball program for his fifth season is Head Coach Dan Simonds, who brings a record in four years with the RedHawks and 15 returning letterwinners to the 2010 season. Miami brings the combination of a knowledgeable coaching staff, seasoned leadership, talented starters and promising newcomers into the 2010 campaign that will surely make waves in non-conference and Mid-American Conference play. After finishing in league play and fourth in the MAC East a season ago, the RedHawks were knocked out of the MAC Tournament in the semifinals by eventual champion Kent State, ending the season at Returning six position starters and two starting pitchers, Miami looks to add to an already successful squad. The team will depend on solid leadership from its experienced veterans to guide the 12 newcomers who will don the red and white for the first time. Despite the loss of a few key players both to graduation and the draft, coaches and players alike have the utmost confidence in the 2010 squad and its capabilities, and plan to make a run, once again, for the MAC title. We certainly lost a considerable amount of production to graduation, however we will be better balanced in every phase of our team. said Simonds of this year s team and the departing of power hitters Tommy Nurre, Jordan Petraitis and Chris Nadeau. We are going to have power and speed throughout our lineup. We ve got as much depth on this team as we have had in my 10 years here at Miami. That dynamic of having depth at every position will create more of a competitive atmosphere, and our guys will come ready to play every single day. PITCHERS The 2010 pitching staff returns a group of talented, experienced hurlers. Losing only one of its top-three starting pitchers, left-hander Matt Erwood to graduation, the RedHawk bullpen has much to offer for the upcoming season, as well. We lost an all conference pitcher in Erwood but we return several quality arms, said Simonds of the pitching staff. Our strength is our depth and we have a lot of guys who will get innings. They have shown they are all capable of filling various roles and shutting opposing teams down. Miami returns starter Tyler Melling to the mound, a junior right-hander who made 13 starts during the 2009 season, second only to Erwood. Logging 70.2 innings throughout last season, he finished second on the team in strikeouts with 49 and held batters to a.269 average while he was TYLER MELLING on the mound. Tyler Melling is going to be the anchor of the [starting pitching] staff, said Simonds. He s a proven two-year starter and we can see him blossoming into being that go-to guy. Also eyeing a spot in the 2010 Miami starting rotation is senior righthander Reece Asbury, who logged 33 innings last season with 18 of 21 appearances coming in relief, as he ended 2009 with a 7.64 ERA and 23 strikeouts. Reece never quite got back to 100 percent after his injury, Simonds said. He had a productive summer and fall and will challenge for the number two spot in the rotation. Several veteran and young players alike will also be in contention for a spot in what will prove to be a rotation chalk full of talent. Entering the season after recording the third-most starts in his rookie season with the RedHawks is sophomore right-hander Lance Kingrey. Logging six starts and 27.2 innings, Kingrey s experience gained last year, including mostly non-conference starts, will prove useful as he looks to become a staple in the pitching staff. Rounding out the top returning pitchers for the 2010 RedHawks are Sam Dawes, Jamaal Hollis, Jordan Jankowski and Matt Rosinski. Junior left-hander Sam Dawes recorded just one decision in 2009 (a win) but set the Miami single-season appearances record with 34 (all out of the bullpen), 22 of which were scoreless, while firing 20 strikeouts. Looking to lead the RedHawks in relief efforts this season is senior righthander Jamaal Hollis. Hollis recorded the third-most relief appearances for Miami in 2009 with 23, compiling the best ERA of the season at 2.08 and picking up a pair of saves. The veteran reliever tossed a career-high 26.0 innings last season and will look to come in and provide shutdown innings late in contests this year. Doing double-duty for Miami this season will be right-handed pitcher Jordan Jankowski, who also started at catcher five games and was in the 2010 RedHawks Baseball batting lineup 17 times a season ago. Jankowski made 22 appearances on the mound, including three starts, and compiled a 4.93 ERA in 43.2 innings of work. He also recorded a team-best five saves which ranks in Miami s singleseason top-10. Jordan Jankowski not only was our closer last year but had a couple spot starts as well, said Simonds. Currently he is slated to be our closer. Ideally we will be able to keep him in that role the entire year. The final top returning pitcher is sophomore right-hander Matt Rosinski. Serving as a leading reliever in his rookie campaign alongside Dawes, Rosinski also tied the school record with 34 appearances on the mound, recording a 6.37 ERA in 35.1 innings with 25 strikeouts. Looking to put in some valuable starts this season are returning righthanders senior Nick Kurash and redshirt-sophomore Ryan Meyers. The veteran Kurash logged just one start last season and made six appearances but will look to eat up innings, especially in mid-week play. Meyers boasted the fourth-best ERA on the team at 4.15 in 12 appearances, including one start. Lefty redshirt sophomore Shawn Marquardt, a transfer from Northwest Florida State College, will miss the 2010 season with an elbow injury. Several other RedHawks will add valuable depth to the bullpen this season. Sophomore Ryan Campbell, senior Brandon Meister, sophomore Joe Neff--all right-handers--along with senior southpaw Kyle Donawerth and redshirt sophomore left-hander Chris Gutschenritter, look to bolster an already deep and experienced staff of relievers. The 2010 Miami RedHawks pitching staff welcomes five newcomers who come ready not only to learn from one of the most experienced bullpens in the conference, but to compete right away, as well. The group consists of Brandon Adkins, Brooks Fiala, Brian Krolikowski, Mason Reynolds and Mac Thoreson, who will add to an already strong array of right-handed Miami pitchers. Adkins, hailing from West Virginia, compiled a 1.7 ERA with a 5-1 record and 11 saves as a senior at Cabell Midland High School. Fellow rookie righthander Brooks Fiala, out of Carmel, Ind., is a serious contender for the third weekend starting position After guys like Melling, Asbury, Hollis and Jankowski we are looking to a lot of young guys, said Simonds of the newcomers. Brooks Fiala had a lot of success in high school and had a very good fall, so I expect him to contribute. He is a legitimate two-way guy and we expect he will make contributions with his bat as well. Providing leadership on the mound and at the plate for Batavia High School (Illinois), Krolikowski s most noted accomplishments included a 6-2 record and 1.62 ERA in his senior season and a no-hitter as a sophomore. Brian Krolikowski didn t throw as much as we would ve liked in the fall but now that he is back up to full strength he could be one of those guys who will fight for a starting role, said Simonds. Reynolds, out of West Carrollton High school in Ohio, and Thoreson, who, in his senior season led Farragut High School (TN) to a 39-5 mark, a third state title in four years, and a No. 9 ranking nationally, round out the newcomers on the mound. Thoreson, like Fiala, could be a two-way player and also see time at first base. Solidifying our starting rotation is going to be the key. There are a couple young arms that are battling for starting roles. It should be fun to see who emerges, Simonds said of the staff. After that we ve got the depth in the bullpen to be very competitive. INFIELDERS The infield holds the starkest contrast between graduated veterans, returning starters and talented newcomers of any part of the 2010 RedHawks. Lost to the draft after graduating last season are first baseman Tommy Nurre and third baseman Jordan Petraitis. The deadly duo held the top two spots in terms of batting average, on-base percentage and runs batted in last season. Nurre also led the team in home runs. Returning to help fill the gap left by two of Miami s most successful players in recent history are juniors Jon Edgington, Brad Gschwind and Kyle Weldon, along with junior transfer Ryan Kaup. An established member of the Miami infield is second baseman and 2010 co-captain Jon Edgington. Playing in all 55 games a season ago, Edgington started 53 at second base and was a solid presence both in the field and at the plate, after making 42 starts as a freshman. As a sophomore he established himself as a reliable middle infielder, making just six errors all year for a.975 fielding percentage while batting.276 with 28 RBI. His consistency will prove crucial to the youngest part of the 2010 squad. Gschwind, Edgington s running mate in the middle of the infield, returns at shortstop, as he was the lone RedHawk to start all 55 games last season. As a sophomore, the righty batted.308 on the season, including 55 singles and nine doubles. The duo combined to turn 32 double plays a season ago and will be counted on heavily as the backbone of Miami s defense. They re two guys who have a lot of experience and continue to improve, said Simonds of Edgington and Gschwind. They played together all last season and during summer ball in the Great Lakes League, so they are

5 Season Preview very familiar with one another. As far as consistency, they were two of the better ones in the conference last year, so to have them back is definitely a plus. They both have good range and know how to play the game. A transfer from Claremont-McKenna College in Arizona, Kaup looks to fill the void at third base that had belonged to now-chicago Cub Jordan Petraitis. Last season, Kaup played in 36 games, starting in all but one, as he batted.321 with four home runs and won the team s Gold Glove award for his defensive skills. His talent will add to an already sturdy infield. Kaup has been a pleasant surprise, said Simonds of the new RedHawk. We knew he was a top defensive shortstop in junior college and he has impressed with his bat as well. He will compete for time on the left side of the infield. Also looking to solidify the Miami infield is junior Kyle Weldon. Though starting only three times and playing in 19 contests in 2009, Weldon maintained a.944 fielding percentage with just one error on the season. Starting his career with the RedHawks as a designated hitter, Weldon will be called upon this season to use his defensive abilities to shore up the infield. Kyle Weldon has been waiting for two years for his opportunity, said Simonds. He has shown some signs of being a real left-handed hitting threat, but he is going to have to go out there and prove it. Debuting in the 2010 season are freshmen infielders Bryan Beaver, Kevin Bower, Mac Thoreson, who will also be used on the mound, and Cory Klenke. This young but talented group will have the unique ability to contribute immediately after the losses of Nurre and Petraitis. Beaver logged a.394 average at the plate with 101 RBI, 30 doubles and four home runs in three seasons at Lakota West High in West Chester, Ohio. Bower, a lefty out of Indianapolis, provides the coaching staff with another talented first-base option, as he hit.415 and was named to first-team all-city as a junior and senior. Bower will be competing for playing time said Simonds. He was third on the team in hitting in the fall and led the team in extra-base hits. He is a big, strong kid with potential to be in the middle of our lineup. Rounding out the newcomers is Cory Klenke. As a senior, he hit an outstanding.547 with 13 doubles, three triples and seven home runs and was a two-time All-Ohio selection. His experience in the field adds to a talented and ready-to-play class of new infielders. OUTFIELDERS The Miami outfield boasts the most experience among position players, as five of Miami s six outfielders have at least a year at Miami under their belt, with junior college All-American Bryce Redeker being the lone newcomer. Despite the loss of left-fielder Chris Nadeau to graduation, the outfield has enough talent to fill the gap left behind, including returning starters Adam Eaton and Ryan Curl, who each started at least 50 games a year ago. We re going to be very fast in the outfield, said Simonds. We ve got six outfielders and all of them can run. They all have good arms as well, so it is going to be a bit of a challenge for opponents to take extra bases. Our team is going to be based on defense and pitching so to have these types of players is going to be a big plus as the season moves along. Leading the outfielders on offense and defense is junior Adam Eaton, a 2009 First-Team All-MAC and Second-Team All-Mideast Region selection. Having started 102 games in his first two years combined, the southpaw slugger is the returning statistical leader in 11 of 12 offensive categories, falling short to fellow outfielder Zak Hatfield ADAM EATON only in home runs. Eaton s talent was acknowledged with a bid to play for the Cotuit Kettleers in the Cape Cod Baseball League last summer, but he was sidelined due to injury. Now back at fullstrength, Eaton will be an impact player and team leader for the RedHawks this season. Adam is an impact type player and a tremendous athlete. He changes the complexion of the game with his speed and power. He may contribute on the mound this year as well. said Simonds of the multi-talented junior. Though just a freshman during the 2009 season, Curl made his arrival known with 53 appearances total, including 50 starts in the outfield, and is one of the top returning position players this season. Despite five errors made, Curl maintained a.964 fielding percentage with five assists and provided speed in centerfield. At the plate, Curl had a solid performance for his rookie year, finishing with a.269 average, 31 runs, 32 RBI, three triples and four round-trippers. This season, he looks to build on last year s experience, cutting down on strikeouts while adding to Miami s strong defensive presence in the outfield. Curl went through some growing pains last year transitioning to the college game, said Simonds. He really started to come on towards the end of the year and became a much better player. We are going to need him to put the ball in play a lot more and utilize his speed. After transferring from Lakeland Community College last year, outfielder Zak Hatfield made 41 starts (34 as a designated hitter and seven in the outfield). With Nadeau s departure, Hatfield will be expected to contribute more on the defensive end this season. His 12 home runs were second on the 2009 team while adding 42 RBI. Hatfield also contributed 13 multi-rbi games and 10 multi-hit games as well. His power at the plate makes him a valuable veteran who can fill in nicely in the outfield. Zach has made some significant adjustments over the past year. He has become more of a complete hitter and not just a slugger, said Simonds. His adjustments should make him a more consistent offensive threat in our lineup. Also looking to make their presences felt in the field and the plate are sophomores Ryan Brenner and Pat Glass. Due to the solid outfield lineup of the past season, these two second-year RedHawks are ready to show their skills in 2010, after combining for just six starts in the outfield in Brenner is a probably our fastest, most intelligent runner, said Simonds. He came along and got some playing time at the end of the season and made the most of his opportunities. He had a great fall, so he is going to be pushing for time. Redeker will make his debut in the red and white this season after two years at Kankakee (Ill.) Community College. The junior college All-American set multiple school records at Kankakee, including 181 hits and 145 RBI in two years, and has the inside track on the vacant left field spot as the season approaches. Bryce has had a good amount of success in the past and nothing leads us to believe he will not do the same here at Miami, said Simonds. We are excited about his potential. CATCHERS Miami returns a pair of catchers from last season, while adding a talented newcomer to replace the graduated Eric Darlage (24 starts at catcher). Junior co-captain Adam Weisenburger will be the most consistent face behind the mask for Miami this season, after starting in 27 games (26 at catcher) and making 33 appearances in While catching, Weisenburger allowed only three passed balls and recorded one pickoff. He will be joined by sophomore Jordan Jankowski, who started five games at catcher a season ago, but Jankowski will see time on both ends of the battery, as he is also one of Miami s most reliable arms. Weisenburger has turned himself into one of the better complete catchers in our conference, said Simonds. He was our every day guy last year, and he caught every game in the MAC Tournament. He knows how to call a game, he knows how to work the pitchers, he has improved his arm and he blocks very well. He s become a leader on this team and we expect some big things from him. Freshman Nate Bowles will have two outstanding examples to learn from during his rookie season, and is expected to spend some time behind the plate as well, if only in relief for the veterans. At Stebbins (Ohio) High School, Bowles served as team captain as a junior and senior and earned second-team all-area honors, as he will look to contribute whenever possible in his first season in Oxford. THE COMPETITION The Miami baseball team is known for its grueling, competitive non-conference schedule, and this season is no exception to that rule. The RedHawks open the season against pre-season No. 15 Clemson, and play several other schools with renowned programs, including Auburn and Louisiana-Lafayette, before diving into conference play. The RedHawks also make their annual spring break trip to Florida in mid-march against steady non-conference teams from around the country. In line with the standings and finishes from last year, Miami was picked to finish fourth in the Mid-American Conference East in the MAC pre-season coaches poll, with Bowling Green and Ball State chosen to win the East and West divisions, respectively. Miami knocked out Bowling Green in the league tournament last year before being eliminated by eventual champ Kent State. Once again, however, Miami is expected to be in the running for a conference championship, and will battle with Toledo, Kent State and Ohio, in addition to the favorites, throughout the season. The RedHawks open up the 2010 conference campaign with a series at home against Central Michigan, who was picked to finish third in the West Division. Miami also faces non-conference opponents in mid-week games throughout the season, including local rivals Xavier, Cincinnati and Dayton, as well as Indiana. Miami will see Xavier and either the Bearcats or Wright State when it hosts the Joe Nuxhall Tournament April 13-14, as well. The squad then ends the regular season at home in a Battle of the Bricks series against rival Ohio before heading to the MAC Tournament May 26-29, when the Hawks will look to earn their first NCAA Tournament berth since

8 Mid-American Conference Since its inception in 1946, the Mid- American Conference has progressively grown and developed into one of the most aggressive Division I conferences in the country. One of only 11 football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conferences, the MAC named Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher as its eighth commissioner in the 63-year history of the league in March of Steinbrecher came to the MAC after serving for six years as the commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference. The league has grown its commitment to championships by expanding to six its number of neutral site post-season events football (Detroit s Ford Field), volleyball (Toledo s SeaGate Centre), men s and women s basketball (Cleveland s Quicken Loans Arena), softball (Akron s Firestone Stadium) and most recently baseball (Chillicothe s VA Memorial Stadium). The MAC tied a league record in 2008 with five schools participating in bowl games Buffalo (International); Ball State (GMAC); Central Michigan (Motor City); Western Michigan (Texas); and Northern Illinois (Independence Bowl). The 2008 season also saw the first MAC football team ranked in the Top 25 since Ball State was ranked as high as 12th in the BCS Standings, 12th in the AP and 13th in the USA Today Poll. The Cardinals were ranked in all three polls for 10 straight weeks. MAC football teams won a league record four games versus opponents from the Big Ten. Toledo became the first MAC team to ever beat Michigan in Ann Arbor; Ball State won its first-ever game against a Big Ten foe when the Cardinals beat Indiana; Central Michigan also defeated Indiana; and Western Michigan beat Illinois in a game played at Ford Field. In its partnership with ESPN, the MAC signed an eight-year rights agreement through the academic year for football, as well as men s and women s basketball. The deal will be the most extensive in the 63-year history of the conference. The new deal calls for a minimum of 25 events annually to be produced and aired on an ESPN platform including the men s and women s basketball championships, a regular-season MAC presence on ESPN, the Marathon MAC Football Championship and a minimum of 11 regular-season football games. Women s athletics shined for the MAC this past year. For the first time in the history of the conference the MAC sent three teams to the NCAA women s volleyball tournament (Miami, Ohio and Western Michigan). Western Michigan became only the third team to make it to the Sweet Sixteen (Ohio 2005 and Western Michigan 1983). In women s basketball MAC Tournament Champion Ball State upset perennial national power Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA tournament handing the Lady Vols their first ever loss in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. The victory was named Pontiac MAC Office 24 Public Square, 15th Floor Cleveland, OH Phone: (216) Fax: (216) Game Changing Performance of the 2009 NCAA Women s Basketball Tournament, while first year head coach Kelly Packard was named Maggie Dixon Division I Rookie Coach of the Year by the WBCA. Akron continued its dominance of MAC men s soccer with its 11 regular-season championships to go along with its sixth MAC Tournament title both league records. The Zips were ranked as high as No. 2 during the season and reached the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament before falling to Northwestern, 1-0. Steve Zakuani, who helped guide the University of Akron men s soccer program to a record-setting campaign in 2008, was the first overall pick of the 2009 Major League Soccer Super Draft. Zakuani earned 2008 MAC Men s Soccer Player of the Year honors and was a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, which goes to the best men s soccer player in the country. The conference now has national leadership positions on the following NCAA committees: Warde Manual, Buffalo (Academic Cabinet); Susan Lipnickey, Miami (Leadership Council and Infractions Appeals); Derrick Gragg, Eastern Michigan (Legislative Council); Dr. John Peters, Northern Illinois (Board of Directors); Tom Collins, Ball State (Amateurism Cabinet); Kelly Andrews, Toledo (Awards, benefits, Expenses & Financial Aid Cabinet); Stephannnie Harvey-Vandenburg, Eastern Michigan (Recruiting & Athletic Personal Issues Cabinet); Brad Bates, Miami (Academic Performance); Eileen Jennings, Central Michigan (Infractions); Ted McKown, Kent State (International Students Records); Jim Klein, Toledo (Legislative Review & Interpretations); Karin Lee, Ball State (Minority Opportunities and Interest); Melody Reifel Werner, Eastern Michigan (Research); Catharine Marsszeky, Kent State (Student-Athlete Advisory); Lee Merserve, Bowling Green (Walter Byers Scholarship). The MAC also has representation on Division I Sport Committees and related governing groups: Cathy O Donnell, Kent State (Field Hockey); Dave Heeke, Central Michigan (Football Issues); Marling Newt Engle, Akron (Rifle); Karin Lee, Ball State (Tennis); Rich Ceronie (Track & Field); Laing Kennedy, Kent State (Men s Basketball); Charlie Coles, Miami (Men s Basketball Issues); Jim Schaus, Ohio and Reggie Witherspoon, Buffalo (Men s Basketball Rules); Steven Cady, Miami (Men s Ice Hockey); Mary Lu Gribschaw, Akron (Men s Soccer); Greg Christopher, Bowling Green (Women s Basketball); Anucha Brown- Sanders, Buffalo and Donyale Canada, MAC (Women s Basketball Issues); Curt Miller, Bowling Green (Women s Basketball Rules); Jerry Reighard, Central Michigan (Gymnastics); Matt Wolfert, Ball State (Women s Soccer); Dee Abrahamson, Northern Illinois (Women s Softball Rules); Derek van der Merwe, Central Michigan (Wrestling). From two-time Super Bowl winning quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (Miami University), NFL Defensive MVP James Harrison (Kent State University), British Open winner Ben Curtis (Kent State University), World Series winning manager Bob Brenly (Ohio University) and Olympic bobsled team member Brock Kreitzburgh (University of Toledo), the Mid-American Conference continues to excel in producing leaders in the world of athletics. History of the MAC Based in Cleveland since July 1999 following a 15-year stay in Toledo, Ohio, the MAC has established historic measurements in both football and men s and women s basketball since moving to Northeast Ohio. The Mid-American Conference was founded as a five-school league on February 24, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter members. The Mid-American Conference has 12 full-time schools and a 13th, Temple, for football only. Comprising the East Division is the University of Akron (joined in 1992), Bowling Green State University (1952), University at Buffalo (1998), Kent State University (1951), Miami University (1947), Ohio University (1946) and Temple University (2007). The West Division members are Ball State University (1973), Central Michigan University (1971), Eastern Michigan University (1971), Northern Illinois University ( , 1997), University of Toledo (1950) and Western Michigan University (1947). In 1946 men s basketball was the first competitive sport in the MAC, which now sponsors a total 23 sports.
