4 2011 Season Preview Now in his sixth season at the helm of the Miami Baseball program, Head Coach Dan Simonds has a lot to be excited about this spring. The RedHawks has six returning position starters and a wealth of pitching experience on the roster, plus added a talented crop of newcomers. The Mid-American Conference coaches recognized this during the preseason, picking Miami second in the East Division with one coach tabbing the RedHawks as likely tournament champions. A year ago, Miami fought through a string of injuries to earn a berth in the MAC Tournament and finish overall (13-14 in league play). The clincher was a three-game sweep of rival Ohio in Oxford on the final weekend. We are looking forward to what lies ahead this season, Head Coach Dan Simonds said. I think we are going to be a very strong defensive team. We are deep on the mound with six potential starters. Our bullpen should be strong with several guys capable of shutting opponents down. Offensively, we will have a good combination of speed and power. PITCHERS The 2011 pitching staff returns a group of talented, experienced hurlers. The top three starters all return in Mac Thoreson, Tyler Melling and Brooks Fiala, plus Shawn Marquardt is back after missing all of last year with an injury. That gives Simonds a solid base on which to build his weekly rotation. Thoreson, a sophomore, finished 5-6 a year ago, THORESON tallying a 5.09 ERA over 16 appearances (12 starts). He was the Sunday starter early in the season, but worked his way into the Friday slot by year s end. Mac has emerged as a leader on our pitching staff, Simonds said. He had a solid freshman campaign and we expect even bigger things from him this year. He is one of the guys that sets the tone for our pitching staff. Melling opened 15 games for Miami, logging team highs for inning pitched (90.0) and strikeouts (57). He posted a 5-7 record and 5.90 ERA, while Fiala (3-4, 7.73) jumped right into the weekend rotation as a freshman. Tyler is going to be the anchor of the [starting pitching] staff, said Simonds. He s a proven two-year starter and we can see him blossoming into being that go-to guy. Marquardt, spend the 2010 season redshirting, but is completely healed and should challenge for a weekend spot. The junior could also be used in a mid-week rotation. We certainly missed having Shawn on our team last season and we are excited about what he brings to our staff. His experience and demeanor will be a big addition in Senior Sam Dawes should step right into the role. Last MAC year s set-up man, Dawes made 23 appearances, finishing 1-1 with a 4.36 ERA. Sam has been one of our most reliable relievers and continues to get better each year. He is coming off a very good summer and has made some adjustments in his delivery that make him even more deceptive. Another mainstay of the bullpen is junior Matt Rosinski (2-0, 6.23). The junior right-hander also pitched in 23 games a year ago, showcasing his durability. The coaches expect Rosinski to take his game to the next level this season. Of the younger arms on the staff, sophomore Brandon Adkins has the potential to be a special pitcher in our program, according to Simonds. His 23 appearances in 2010 included some crucial situations, so the expectations are high for his sophomore campaign. He has two quality pitches in his fastball and slider. Freshman Seth Varner and Alex Brown are likely to see mid-week starts during their initial collegiate campaigns. Both players could also see weekend innings in relief. Other likely relievers this season are juniors Joe Neff, Ryan Myers and Ryan Campbell and freshman Charlie Suich. Campbell and Suich will get innings out of the bullpen, while Neff has the talent to be an impact reliever, but needs to be more consistent with his command. Myers also needs to gain more control to earn opportunities. Another freshman, Charles Zubrod, will gain experience during this season, most likely in long relief during the non-conference campaign. CATCHERS Depth and experience describe Miami s situation behind the plate for the 2011 season. Senior Adam Weisenburger opened 45 games a year ago, batting.312 and driving in 45 runs. Defensively, he made just three errors for a.990 fielding percentage and threw out a third of the runners attempting to steal (16 of 48). Adam has become one of the top catchers in MAC. Defensively, he can change a game with his throwing and blocking skills. He also continues to progress at the plate and should be a productive hitter in the middle of the lineup. Sophomore Nate Bowles gained experience last year and should be ready to step into the backup role as needed. He batted.297 in his limited opportunities, and is a strong defensive receiver. Freshman John Crummy will give Miami good depth behind the plate this season. He had a very good fall and could see time as a designated hitter or as a left-handed pinch-hitter. INFIELDERS The Miami infield is as experienced as any in the Mid- American Conference as the entire group remains intact from With four seniors around the horn, including co-captains Jon Edgington and Kyle Weldon, there is no doubt, this will be the focus of the RedHawk defense. But there is no void of offense either from the infielders as four of them batted over.300 last season. Ryan Kaup hit.333 (1 HR, 21 RBIs) from his shortstop 4

5 2011 Season Preview position, opening 45 games there. He fielded at a rate of.949, committing only 11 errors in over 200 chances. Edgington, named co-captain for the second straight year, was the starter at second in 46 games, batting.307 with three home runs and 30 runs batted in. He was also perfect on all 15 stolen-base attempts. Jon is one of the top defensive second basemen in the MAC, and together with Ryan Kaup gives us strong middle infield, Simonds said. Kaup has made tremendous strides offensively and will be a very tough out in the lineup. On the corners, Miami features Weldon at first and Brad Gshwind at third, with each player starting over 30 games at their respective position. Weldon provided a bulk of the power in 2010, hitting eight home runs and driving in 53, numbers that ranked second in both categories. He also had a.318 average, which placed third on the team, and was the only RedHawk to appear in all 56 games. Gschwind batted.265 over 55 games, but more impressively, committed just four errors for a.979 field percentage. Kyle is a hard worker who has developed into a power threat, Simonds commented. He is coming off a terrific summer in which he was a Great Lakes League All-Star. and has been on a mission since we were eliminated last year in the MAC tournament. Brad has made some significant adjustments at the plate and we expect him to be a more productive hitter in As rich as the five probable starters are, Miami is blessed with depth across the front five. Gschwind started 21 times in a middle infield spot, allowing Cory Klenke to gain valuable experience at the hot corner. Now a sophomore, he struggled to a.214 average in his first go-round against collegiate pitching. Cory went through some growing pains as a freshman and we feel he is going to be much better for it, Simonds said. He is a great athlete and is going to compete for time at both third and short. Across the infield, sophomore Kevin Bower also saw solid playing time in his rookie season, starting 23 times at first, with an additional four as the DH. Kevin has developed into one of the better hitting threats in the MAC. He really committed himself in the weight room and should be one of our top run producers in our lineup. Newcomers Jordan Shusteric, Dan Walsh and Drew Willis will also provide depth, serving as pinch hitters or pinch runners. Willis, a left-handed hitter, has power potential and could also see time as a DH. OUTFIELDERS The Miami outfield features a mix of experience and young talent. On one hand, there are juniors Bryce Redeker, Ryan Curl and Ryan Brenner, projected as the starters early on in the season. Redeker, who played left field on opening day last year, batted for the cycle and drove in seven runs in the fourth game of the year, but broke a bone in his hand the next series and was medically redshirted. He was a junior college All-American before joining the RedHawks. Curl, who started 50 games in centerfield as a a freshman and 24 as a sophomore, moves to right field to replace Adam Eaton. Brenner, who shared time with Curl in center, opening 21 times there, will make that his everyday home. Bryce has the potential to be an impact player., Simonds said. Prior to getting injured last year he showed what he is capable of bringing to this team. Ryan Curl has battled some injuries over the past WELDON year and is very close to being back to 100%. He has the potential to change the complexion of the game when he is on the basepaths. Ryan Brenner will be our catalyst at the top of our order. He puts a lot of pressure on opposing defenses. The talented group waiting in the wings consists of junior Pat Glass, redshirt freshman Bryan Beaver and true freshmen Marcus Makuch and Stephen Crea. Glass is a good defensive outfielder with a strong arm and could see time in right field. Beaver logged a.394 average at the plate with 101 RBI, 30 doubles and four home runs in three seasons at Lakota West High in West Chester, Ohio. Brian has really emerged over the past year, Simonds stated. Although it was difficult for him to redshirt last year, he made the most of it. His defensive versatility will allow him opportunities at various positions. Makuch comes into the program with impressive credentials from Liberty Union in Baltimore. He has above-average power, giving him a shot at pinch-hitter or designated hitting roles. Crea earned a spot on the roster as a true walkon, showing off his offensive skills during fall workouts. KYLE THE COMPETITION The Miami baseball team faces another strong non-conference schedule, beginning with three straight trips down South. In the first month, the RedHawks will face College of Charleston, Kentucky, UNC-Wilmington and Air Force to name a few. The latter portion of the schedule includes local rivals Cincinnati, Xavier and Dayton, plus Big Ten members Ohio State and Indiana. The Buckeyes are on the docket for the first time since The MAC will be as competitive as ever with Central Michigan, Kent State and Bowling Green -- and Miami -- all poised to make a championship run. The conference is wide open this year, Simonds added. There is no question in my mind that if we do the little things and really focus on the process, the results will come. But I believe if we continue to progress, we will be right where we need to be come the end of May Miami RedHawks Baseball 5

8 Mid-American Conference Providing leadership in education and diversity, the Mid-American Conference moves into its 64th year of service to the student-athlete. Since its inception in 1946, the Mid-American Conference has progressively grown and developed into one of the most aggressive Division I conferences in the country. One of only 11 football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conferences, the MAC named Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher as its eighth commissioner in March of Steinbrecher came to the MAC after serving six years as the commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference. The league has grown its commitment to championships by expanding to six its number of neutral site postseason events football (Detroit s Ford Field), volleyball (Toledo s SeaGate Centre), men s and women s basketball (Cleveland s Quicken Loans Arena), softball (Akron s Firestone Stadium) and baseball (Chillicothe s VA Memorial Stadium). The MAC tied a league record in 2009 with five schools participating in football, while Central Michigan was ranked No. 23 in the AP poll and No. 24 in the USA Today coaches poll at the end of the season. Two more MAC teams defeated Big Ten opponents during the regular season as Central Michigan defeated Michigan State, in East Lansing, Mich., while Northern Illinois rolled to a win at Purdue. For the first time in its 64-year history, the MAC will have five bowl relationships--three primary and two secondary--for the next four seasons ( ). The three primary agreements are with the Little Caesar s Pizza Bowl (Detroit, Mich.), GMAC Bowl (Mobile, Ala.) and udrove Humanitarian Bowl (Boise, Idaho). In addition, the MAC has secured two secondary agreements over the next three years with the Papajohns.com Bowl ( ), the Dallas Football Classic (2012) and the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl/ San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl/New Mexico Bowl (2011 and 2013). In a partnership with ESPN, the MAC will enter the second year of its eight-year rights agreement (through academic year) for football, as well as men s and women s basketball. The agreement calls for a minimum of 25 events annually to be produced and aired on an ESPN platform including the men s and women s basketball championships, a regular-season MAC presence on ESPN, the Marathon MAC Football Championship and a minimum of 11 regular-season football games. MAC Office 24 Public Square, 15th Floor Cleveland, OH Phone: (216) Fax: (216) A year after falling in the men s soccer championship, Akron became the first MAC team to win a national title, defeating Louisville 1-0 in the final. Zips coach Caleb Porter was named National Coach of the Year for NCAA Division I. Akron striker Teal Bunbury received three honors, including the 2009 Hermann Trophy, the most prestigious honor in intercollegiate soccer, named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Player of the Year in Division I and Soccer America s Player of the Year. Two Akron soccer players were selected in the top 10 of the MLS 2010 SuperDraft, including Bunbury (No. 4 overall to the Kansas City Wizards) and Blair Gavin (No. 10 overall to Chivas USA). Ohio s men s basketball team entered the 2010 MAC tournament as a No. 9 seed and defeated Akron in the MAC Championship game. The Bobcats went on and defeated No. 3 seed Georgetown in the opening round of the NCAA tournament before falling to Tennessee. Kent State was invited to the NIT and defeated Tulsa before falling to Illinois, while Akron was invited to the College Basketball Invitational. In wrestling, Central Michigan won its ninth consecutive MAC championship, while the MAC sent 26 wrestlers to the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship where six grapplers secured All-America honors. Eastern Michigan won its fourth consecutive championship in men s swimming and diving, while Kent State won its 18th MAC title in men s golf, while Western Michigan made its fifth consecutive appearance to the NCAA Men s Tennis Tournament. In baseball, Kent State won the MAC championship, while Ball State had two players selected in the first two rounds of MLB s 2010 Draft. Women s athletics continued to shine for the MAC this past year. For the first time in MAC history five basketball teams were invited to postseason tournaments. Bowling Green won the MAC tourney and received the invitation to the NCAA tournament, while Eastern Michigan, Kent State and Toledo all were invited to the WNIT and Akron received an invite to the Women s Basketball Invitational. In women s soccer, Central Michigan won the MAC championship and defeated Purdue in its first NCAA tournament match in program history. Ohio won the MAC volleyball championship and defeated Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAA tournament. In women s swimming and diving, Toledo won its first ever MAC championship, while Buffalo s Meili Carpenter became the first swimmer in school history to earn All-America status. Both Central Michigan and Kent State competed at the NCAA Regional Championships in gymnastics, while Kent State won its 12th consecutive women s golf conference title and advanced to the NCAA championships. Miami was the tennis champion. From two-time Super Bowl quarterback winning Ben Roethlisberger (Miami), NFL Defensive MVP James Harrison (Kent State), three NFL Pro Bowlers (Cleveland KR Josh Cribbs, San Diego TE Antonio Gates, Pittsburgh LB James Harrison), British Open winner Ben Curtis (Kent State), World Series winning manager Bob Brenly (Ohio) and Olympic bobsled team member Brock Kreitzburgh (Toledo), the Mid-American Conference continues to excel in producing leaders in the world of athletics. History of the MAC Based in Cleveland since July 1999 following a 15-year stay in Toledo, Ohio, the MAC has established historic measurements in both football and men s and women s basketball since moving to Northeast Ohio. The MAC was founded as a five-school league on February 24, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter members. The Mid-American Conference has 12 full-time schools and a 13th, Temple, for football only. Comprising the East Division is the University of Akron, Bowling Green State University, University at Buffalo, Kent State University, Miami University, Ohio University and Temple University. The West Division members are Ball State University, Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Northern Illinois University, University of Toledo and Western Michigan University. In 1946 men s basketball was the first sport in the MAC, which now sponsors a total 23 sports. Women s sports were brought into the conference s structure in For men, championships (11) are sponsored in football, basketball, baseball, cross country, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor and outdoor track and field, wrestling, golf and tennis. For women, championships (12) are sponsored in basketball, softball, volleyball, cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, swimming, gymnastics, and indoor and outdoor track and field. 8
