TECH IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT The Yellow Jackets are hosting an NCAA Regional for the ninth time since 2000 and for the 11th time in school history Tech was invited to the NCAA Tournament for 14 straight years from 1985 through 1998 before being left out of the field of 64 in Tech rebounded with seven-straight appearances, two of which ended in Omaha, before being held out again in The Jackets are making their fourth-straight NCAA appearance after hosting a regional a year ago. The Yellow Jackets made their first appearance in the College World Series in 1994, advancing to the National Championship game before losing to Oklahoma, Tech returned to Omaha in 2002 and again in 2006 and has a NCAA Tournament record under head coach Danny Hall. This Friday, Hall will be coaching in his 75th NCAA Tournament game as the Yellow Jacket skipper. He owns the school record with 777 victories since his arrival on the Flats in This season, the Yellow Jackets finished with a share of the ACC regular season title, the schools first since the 2005 season. Coach Hall has managed his youngest squad in 18 seasons, a group that consists of 17 freshmen. It is the most freshmen on any team in the nation. TECH THE FIELD (No. 2) Southern Miss.: The Golden Eagles hold a 2-1 edge in the all-time series... All three of those games came in the 2009 NCAA Atlanta regional, when Southern Miss. defeated the Jackets by a 12-8 score in the regional final to advance to the Supers. (No. 3) Mississippi State: The Bulldogs and the Jackets have met on 13 different occasions in school history, but not since the 1997 season Mississippi State leads the series 10-3, while also holding a 2-1 lead in games played during the NCAA Tournament In the most recent meeting in 1997, the Bulldogs eliminated the Jackets with a 10-2 win in the Mideast Regional in Starkville, Miss. The first ever meeting between the two came on April 27, (No. 4) Austin Peay: The Governors and the Jackets have met just once before on the diamond, a 14-3 Tech victory in the 1996 NCAA South II Regional in Baton Rouge, La. (The NCAA releases its RPI just once a week, and the Yellow Jackets are listed No. 8 in the official RPI released on May 31). The Atlantic Coast Conference is well represented in the RPI, with six teams ranked among the top 25 in the nation, including five of the top 10. North Carolina, ranked No. 1 in the country in the RPI, leads all conference teams while Virginia (2), Florida State (5), Clemson (6), Georgia Tech (8) and Miami (15) all rank in the top 25. JACKETS SET HISTORY AT ACC TOURNEY Georgia Tech placed its name in ACC and school history during the 2011 ACC Championships. The Jackets defeated NC State, 6-5, in a 15-inning thriller that set the tournament record for longest game ever played at the Championships. The innings also tied a school-record, previously set May 1, 1933 against Oglethorpe. The game lasted five hours and seven minutes, which was a new school record, besting the previous record of five hours against Navy on May 23, The Tech pitchers combined for 18 strikeouts against the Wolfpack, which tied an ACC Tournament record. HYDE STEALS THE GAME The 15 inning affair against NC State couldn t have ended with a more dramatic finish than it did. Freshman Mott Hyde scored the eventual game-winner on a straight steal of home, sliding under the glove of NC State catcher Pratt Maynard in the top half of the 15th inning. Hyde took off during Wolfpack pitcher Jonathan Ogburn s wind-up (wasn t in the stretch), and perfectly timed the pitch to the plate. It was the first straight theft of home in all of head coach Danny Hall s 18 seasons. JACKETS EARN SHARE OF COASTAL DIVISION TITLE The Jackets earned a share of the 2011 Altantic Coast Conference regular season title after finishing the regular season with a 22-8 conference record. Tech and Virginia, both in the ACC Coastal Division, finished with identical records. It was the first regular season title for the Jackets since the 2005 season Georgia Tech Baseball

3 Head Coach Danny Hall 18th Year at Tech: (.692) Overall: (.680) Having spent his entire coaching career involved with winning programs, Danny Hall s tenure at Georgia Tech has been his most successful, as he is the all-time winningest baseball coach in Yellow Jacket history with 737 victories at the school entering the 2011 season. He has led Tech to the NCAA Tournament on 15 occasions and guided the Yellow Jackets to the College World Series in 1994, 2002 and 2006, the only head coach in the program s storied history to reach the promised land of Omaha. Since Hall took over the program, Georgia Tech has averaged 43.1 wins per season, the ninth-highest figure in the nation over the last 17 years. In the last decade alone he directed the Yellow Jackets to two College World Series appearances, three Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament titles (2000, 2003, 2005) and three ACC regular season championships (2000, 2004, 2005) while averaging 43 wins per season. Since Hall s arrival at Georgia Tech in 1994, a staggering 92 Yellow Jackets have been selected in the Major League Baseball Draft a total of 103 times, while 43 MLB Draftees have chosen to attend Georgia Tech to play for the Yellow Jacket skipper. Eleven of his student-athletes have been selected in either the first or supplemental rounds, while he has coached 46 players that have been taken in the first 10 rounds of the MLB draft. Hall s no-nonsense, professional approach to baseball has given his players the fundamentals they need to be successful after leaving Georgia Tech, as is indicated in the number of his former players that have appeared on Major League rosters. Current major leaguers Brandon Boggs of the Texas Rangers, Marlon Byrd of the Chicago Cubs, Tyler Greene of the St. Louis Cardinals, Micah Owings of the Cincinnati Reds, Eric Patterson of the Boston Red Sox, Mark Teixeira of the New York Yankees, Jason Varitek of the Boston Red Sox and Matt Wieters of the Baltimore Orioles all played for the Yellow Jacket skipper. Since his first head coaching job in 1988, Hall has coached no fewer than 21 players that have appeared on Major League rosters. The success of Hall s former players in professional baseball is molded by their accomplishments at Tech, as his Yellow Jacket teams have advanced to 15 NCAA Regionals in his 17 years at the school. Georgia Tech has posted 38 NCAA victories since his arrival in 1994, winning regionals in 1994, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006 and super regionals in 2002 and The Yellow Jackets have posted a.500 or better record in Atlantic Coast Conference play every year since his arrival, and have finished third or better in the league in 10 of his 17 seasons. Georgia Tech has been ranked as the top team in the country six times for a total of 22 weeks under Hall, and in five of the last 10 seasons. 22 CONFERENCE VICTORIES TIE SCHOOL RECORD Tech s 22 conference wins during the 2011 season tied a school-record, previously set by the 2005 team. Head coach Danny Hall tied the record with the youngest team in his 18 seasons on the Flats, a group consisting of 17 freshmen. The 2005 squad, which won Tech s last ACC Championship, had just nine freshmen on its roster. HALL NABS CONFERENCE WIN NO. 300 Danny Hall joined elite company when Georgia Tech defeated North Carolina on Sunday, May 15. The Yellow Jackets skipper recorded his 300th career Atlantic Coast Conference victory, becoming just the fourth coach in conference history to reach the 300 conference wins plateau. He joined Bill Wilhelm of Clemson, the all-time leader at 378, Florida State s Mike Martin (361), and Clemson s Jack Leggett (304). Hall (302), who has never had a losing season in ACC play, has extended his streak of 15-win seasons to nine. BLANKING THE OPPOSITION The Tech pitching staff has combined for seven shutouts in 2011, and is one clean sheet shy of tying the school record of eight Held by the 1906, 1971 and 1997 teams. The Jackets have blanked St. John s (twice), Rutgers, Maryland, NC State, Boston College and North Carolina. Tech s 3-0 win against the Tar Heels on May 15 was the first time all season that UNC had been held without a run. WEEKEND THREE ARE KEY Georgia Tech s weekend rotation of Mark Pope, Jed Bradley and Buck Farmer has keyed the team s success so far this season. The punch is a combined 27-10, with a collective 2.72 ERA (91 earned runs in innings). Pope leads the crew in wins (11) and ERA (1.77), Bradley leads the crew in strikeouts with 102 and Farmer in conference wins (8). The group has pitched seven total complete games this season, the most by a Tech team since the 1998 season. QUALITY AND QUANTIY Quality starts (six innings pitched, three or fewer runs allowed) are pretty much the norm for Georgia Tech starters. Heading into this weekend, Yellow Jackets hurlers have 31 quality starts in 45 appearances. Pope is almost a given, as he has 13 and hasn t had a start shorter than six innings all season. Bradley has eight quality starts, with seven over his last 12 starts. Farmer has eight on the season, and five in his last seven starts. That means a lot of innings pitched. Pope and Farmer are in the top 10 in the ACC, as Pope leads the conference with and Farmer is fourth with POPE PAVES THE WAY IN OPENERS Mark Pope has pitched the Jackets to a huge advantage in each series this season. The Marietta, Ga. native has allowed just 22 earned runs (28 runs total). He leads the ACC in four different categories -- Wins (11), Innings pitched, Shutouts (3) and Complete Games (5) -- while third in ERA (1.77)....SETS MODERN DAY RECORD FOR SHUTOUTS Pope s complete-game shutout masterpiece against Boston College on Friday, April 22 was his third this season and the fourth of his career. 4 ...TOSSES TECH S FIRST ONE-HITTER SINCE 1997 You d have to go back 14 years to find the last time a Georgia Tech pitcher fired a complete-game (nine innings) one-hitter against an opponent prior to Mark Pope s entrapment of Wake Forest on Friday, April 15. Pope s feat was the first since former Jacket Kris Wilson held Tennessee Tech to just one hit over nine innings in the 1997 NCAA Mideast Regional in Starkville, Miss. Former hurler Kevin Cameron pitched a one-hitter against Oakland in 2001, but the game lasted just seven innings....and LASTS THE DURATION Pope has also made a habit of pitching complete games this season, with five CG s on the year. He has six total in two seasons as a starter. Pope s Career Complete Games: Opp. (Date) IP H R ER SO Boston College ( ) Wake Forest ( ) Duke (4-4-11) Maryland ( ) Rutgers (3-4-11) Mercer (6-4-10) EARNING EVERY BUCK After beginning the season in a 0-1 hole (including a no-decision in his first start), sophomore pitcher Buck Farmer went on to win seven straight games before a 3-1 loss to Clemson on May 1st. Farmer (now 10-3) has dazzled in conference games over his first two years on the Flats, going 11-1 against ACC opponents in his career. He had eight victories in conference play this season, the most by any player in the ACC. WREN LEADING THE LEAGUE IN HITS Freshman Kyle Wren is trying to do something that no Tech player has ever done -- lead the league in hits. The Jackets leadoff man leads the ACC with 88 baseknocks entering the NCAA Tournament, eight more than the next closest player. He also leads the league in triples with seven, tying him for seventh place in the Tech singleseason record books. The Peachtree City, Ga. native has reached base safely in 53 of the 59 games, with at least one hit in 47 of them. He has 27 multi-hit games on the season. He had five hits against Maryland on March 12, four hits on two other occasions and three hits in five different games. SKOLE HAVING CAREER SEASON AT THE PLATE Junior third baseman Matt Skole has become a household name in the ACC after starting nearly every game the past three seasons. Skole slugged his way around the conference in 2009 and 2010 with 37 home runs over his first two years. This season the Woodstock, Ga. native s power numbers are down, but his average (.348) up. Skole batted.302 as a freshman and.335 as a sophomore. His 77 hits are two shy of a personal season high. Skole s eight RBI against Georgia (March 22) earlier this season are the most in a single game by an ACC player this season. DAVIES PROVIDES RELIEF IN ANOTHER WAY Entering the 2011 season, the Jackets had big shoes to fill at first base after the departure of All-American Tony Plagman. Junior Jake Davies, who served as one of the primary relievers in the bullpen the past two seasons with over 40 career appearances on the mound, has taken over the role as Tech s everyday first baseman. Davies had just eight hits in 37 at-bats over the past two seasons, but this year he has 72 hits in 52 starts (206 AB). The McDonough, Ga. native is second on the team and fifth in the ACC with a.350 batting average, having made 47 starts at first base. ESCH DOUBLES HIS WORK LOAD Shortstop Jacob Esch has made a habit of doubling up on things this season 21 doubles (Tied for the most in the ACC), turning 28 double plays and also pitching some in relief but his biggest double has been teaming up on academics and athletics. The third-year Civil Engineering major took 19 credit hours in the spring semester, one more than the allowed amount for student athletes. Esch had to get special permission to take an extra credit hour. He was named to the Capitol One Academic All-America Third Team team this season. The junior co-captain has made a huge turnaround at the plate this season, raising his average by 35 points from last year s.284 clip. Esch is also one of 25 quarterfinalists for the Brookes Wallace Award, given to the nation s top shortstop. DEFENSIVE SWITCH PAYS OFF After opening the season with a 5-4 record, head coach Danny Hall made a defensive switch that has paid dividends during the teams current run. Jacob Esch and freshman Mott Hyde switched positions in the middle infield, with Esch moving from second base to shortstop and Hyde just the opposite. Since the flop, Tech has gone and turned 43 double plays. Hyde has been apart of 34 and Esch 30 overall, while they have combined for 23 of them since their switch. Georgia Tech had turned just five DP s in the first nine games of the season. TECH LANDS SIX ON ALL CONFERENCE TEAMS Six Georgia Tech players were named to the 2011 All-Atlantic Coast Conference baseball team, as voted on by the 12 league coaches and announced Monday by Commissioner John Swofford. Junior Mark Pope and freshman Kyle Wren landed a spot on the first team, while juniors Jake Davies, Matt Skole, Jed Bradley and sophomore Buck Farmer were named to the All-ACC second team. Bradley and Skole were each honored for the second time in their careers. Tech has had four or more players selected to All-ACC teams 16 times in head coach Danny Hall s 18-year tenure on the Flats. GROWING PAINS In a lineup is filled with seven new starters, showing anywhere from four to five freshmen on a game-to-game basis, the Jackets have been hampered by some costly youthful mistakes. The group has commited 75 errors defensively, leading to a total of 64 unearned runs. The team has had just 18 games this season in which it did not commit an error, going 14-4 in those contests. Bradley scattered seven hits and one unearned run over nine innings in Saturday s win over Clemson. In a losing effort on Sunday, Farmer allowed just four hits in the eight-inning complete game. He retired the side in six of the eight innings, and used just 76 total pitches in the 3-1 setback. CLAIMING THE HONORS Mark Pope is making a case to be named All- America this season. He has been named the ACC Pitcher of the Week three times, and a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week twice. On Tuesday, May 31, the Marietta, Ga. native was named a semifinalist for the 2011 Golden Spikes Award, given to the nation s top amateur player. Pope joined 29 others on the list. tech fields largest freshman class The 2011 freshman class is the largest in the nation of all the major conferences. All 17 of Tech s newcomers have made collegiate debuts so far, 10 of whom have made starts. Six newcomers started on opening day, while a total of seven started in Tech s 7-4 win over Georgia Southern on Feb. 23, and a 6-3 loss to Georgia State. The class, which is the largest ever brought in during coach Hall s 18 seasons, earned a No. 6 national ranking and the No. 1 overall ranking in the state back in November of Georgia Tech Baseball

After losing the first game of the month, Tech went on to win 16 straight before losing on March 29. It has historically been the best month in all of coach Hall s 18 years. Tech is (.777) in March since QUITE A STRETCH Georgia Tech ran a streak of 16 straight wins from March 4 to March 27 earlier this season, a streak that was at one point the longest in the nation. The 16 consecutive wins were the most for a Georgia Tech team since 2006, the last time the Jackets went to the College World Series. It was also four wins shy of the school record of 20 straight victories, set in the 1990 and 2004 seasons. The Jackets also won 10 straight conference games this season, the second most consecutive ACC wins in school history. The 1997 squad won 12 straight ACC games before their first conference loss. MOUND PRESENCE The Tech pitching staff has combined for a 2.84 ERA this season, the team s lowest ERA since a school record ERA of 2.60 in the 1973 season. Last season the pitching staff posted the second lowest ERA in the Danny Hall era at 4.02, and the lowest since a 3.92 earned run average in Coach Hall s first season on the Flats. GEORGIA TECH IN-STATE OPPONENTS The Jackets have had a tough time in midweek games this season, posting just a 7-6 record in this contests (all in-state opponents). Last season Tech went 12-1 in midweek games. Since 1999, the Yellow Jackets own a (.753) record against its in-state foes. In 18 years under head coach Danny Hall, Tech is (.744) against teams from Georgia. Draft Dodgers The Tech coaching staff has been superb at getting drafted high school players to enroll at Georgia Tech. Eleven current Georgia Tech players have previously been drafted by major league teams, tying for the highest concentration of drafted players ever on one Yellow Jacket team with the 2000 and 2003 squads. The 2011 list includes: Luke Bard (16th, Red Sox, 2009), Buck Farmer (46th, Braves, 2009), Matthew Grimes (4th, White Sox, 2010), Mott Hyde (44th, Blue Jays, 2010), Dusty Isaacs (50th, Pirates, 2010), Kevin Jacob (18th, Yankees, 2010), Daniel Palka (19th, Phillies, 2010), Mark Pope (17th, Braves, 2008), DeAndre Smelter (14th, Twins, 2010), Brandon Thomas (37th, Rockies, 2009) and Chris Triplett (47th, Tigers, 2010). Draft BITERS Despite signing a very strong freshman class, the Jackets were hit hard in the 2010 MLB draft. Seven underclassmen signed professional contracts, inlcuding All- Americans Deck McGuire (RHP) and Derek Dietrich (SS). Ten total players were drafted last season s squad, the most of any team in the ACC. Since the year 2000, Tech has had 72 players selected in the MLB First-Year draft. Tech has been a preseason Top 10 pick in seven of the last 13 years and a top five selection in four of the last 11 seasons. The Jackets are currently ranked No. 19 in both the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, and the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll. ACC COACHES PICK TECH TO FINISH SECOND IN THE COASTAL RACE The 19th-ranked Georgia Tech baseball team was picked to finish second in the Coastal Division race according to the 2011 ACC Preseason Coaches Poll, voted on by the league s 12 head coaches. Atlantic Division leader Clemson was the overall favorite, finishing with seven overall first-place votes and 68 points in the Atlantic Division. Defending ACC Champion Florida State was second with three overall votes, and 64 points in the same division. The Yellow Jackets (56 points) followed Virginia (69) in the Coastal standings. This marks the third straight season in which the Jackets were predicted to finish second in the Coastal Division. Tech finished second in 2010 after a 21-9 record in ACC play. The Rusty C Affectionately known as the Rusty C, a new era in Russ Chandler Stadium began in 2002 with a $9.7 million reconstruction of the facility. The current facility seats 4,157 with room for future expansion down the left field line. The stadium was originally built in 1985, in time for Tech to host the ACC Tournament. It has been the site of 10 NCAA Regional tournaments (1987, 1993, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2010) and an exhibition game between the Yellow Jackets and the first team from the Soviet Union to tour the United States (1989). In the summer of 1996, Russ Chandler Stadium served as an official training site for the Centennial Olympic Games. Rose Bowl Field, the tract of land on which the stadium sits, which includes the adjacent football practice fields, has been the site of Tech baseball since 1930, when the field was built with funds from Tech s 1929 Rose Bowl appearance. Tech was in the old Russ Chandler Stadium, a winning percentage of.798. Year-by-Year at RCS Year Overall Home Total 1, Georgia Tech Baseball 5
