The Bulls took two of the three games in the series at the facility to open the 2016 season. This past Tuesday, USF faced the Tampa Bay Rays in an exhibition game in Port Charlotte, Fla. The Bulls enter the weekend with a 6-1 mark at home. USF swept a three-game series from Western Michigan at USF Baseball Stadium, this past weekend. USF has made NCAA Regional appearances in each of the last two seasons. The Bulls were picked to finish fifth in the American Athletic Conference, this season. Billy Mohl is in his second year as the head coach of the Bulls. He also served as an assistant coach with the USF program, before taking over the helm, last season. The Bulls posted a record in his first season (2018). Homestanding Liberty remained unbeaten at Liberty Baseball Stadium with a 4-3 win over Virginia Tech on Tuesday. The Flames have posted an 8-0 mark on their home field to start The Flames, who have posted a record at the facility since it opened in 2013, are scheduled to play 30 games at Liberty Baseball Stadium this season. Over the first six years of the stadium, Liberty has averaged 20.5 wins per season at home. Sunshine State Bound Liberty will be making its first trip to the state of Florida since meeting this weekend's opponent, USF, to begin the 2016 season. Friday will also be the first time the Flames have played a game in Florida during head coach Scott Jackson's tenure. The Flames are 1-3 on the road in Liberty took its season opener at South Carolina 6-5 in 11 innings on Feb. 15, but have not won a road contest since. Last season, Liberty posted an record on the road last season. Let's Score First Last season, scoring first was an important ingredient in the Flame' success. Liberty posted a 25-7 record when plating the first run of a contest, while having a 7-19 mark when its opponents scored the contest's first run. So far in 2019, the Flames are 6-2 in games in which they have scored first. Liberty has scored in the first inning in seven of their 12 games this season. Liberty Moves to ASUN Conference After 28 years in the Big South Conference, Liberty joins the ASUN Conference for the 2019 season. This past June, 17 of Liberty's 20 athletics programs moved to the conference. Liberty and North Alabama joined Florida Gulf Coast, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, NJIT, North Florida and Stetson to form a nine member league. The Flames will host their first ASUN Conference series, March 22-24, at Liberty Baseball. Liberty and the ASUN Conference Liberty moves into uncharted territory this season, as it has not face an ASUN member since 2015 (Kennesaw State). The Flames are 7-14 against current members of conference. Of the ASUN's eight other members, Liberty has never faced four (FGCU, Lipscomb, NJIT, North Florida) on the diamond. Dandy Duo Right-handers Evan Brabrand and Garret Price have formed quite a bullpen duo for the Flames in the early stages of Entering the weekend, the two have combined to allow just one run over 24 2/3 innings and posted a 3-1 mark with four saves in nine appearances. He is the lone member of the Liberty mound staff who pitched in head coach Scott Jackson's first season in Brabrand Price Karraker's Catch No. 1 on ESPN SportsCenter Top 10 In the top of the fourth inning of Liberty's win over Wake Forest at Liberty Baseball Stadium on Feb. 19, right fielder Ayden Karraker made a spectacular play, making a running catch of a foul ball, before flipping over the side fence and onto the grass berm. Televised by the Liberty Flames Sport Network on ESPN+, the video of the catch appeared on Major League Baseball's twitter and later was picked as the No. 1 play of the day by ESPN SportsCenter. A Look Back at 2018 In their second season under Head Coach Scott Jackson, the Flames posted a overall record. The Flames also finished third in the Big South regular season standings with a mark in their last year in the conference. After dropping their first game of the 2018 Big South Baseball Championship at Liberty Baseball Stadium, the Flames won three straight elimination games, before falling in an if necessary game to move onto the title game against No. 1 seed and eventual Big South Champion Campbell. Team The Flames won 30 or more games for the 14th straight season. Liberty set new program single season records for walks (356), fewest errors (48) and fielding percentage (.977). The Flames finished their 2018 season, second national in bases on balls and were fourth in the nation at year's end. For the second consecutive year, the Flames led the Big South in runs scored (371) and walks. Liberty also led the conference in RBI (.322), doubles (104), triples (19) and on base percentage (.388). Liberty had four players taken in the 2018 Major League Draft. The Flames have had a player selected in every MLB Draft since Individual Outfielder D.J. Artis, third baseman Tyler Galazin, pitcher Garret Price and utility player Tre Todd were named to the Big South All-Conference team. Artis and Todd each earned first team honors, with Artis being selected to the first team each of his three years at Liberty. Artis capped his career by becoming only one of two players in program history to record over 200 hits (211), 170 runs scored (172) and over 70 stolen bases (72) during his career (Joey Monahan ; 2/171/85) and was the 21st player in school history with 200 or more hits. In addition, he finished his career second all-time in runs scored with 172 and stolen bases with 72 and completed his career as the program leader with 166 career walks. Andrew Yacyk joined the program's 100 RBI club, finishing his Flames' career with exactly 100. Artis Becomes Highest Draft Pick since 2004, Four Flames Drafted Outfielder D.J. Artis became the highest Liberty draft pick since 2004, as four Flames were selected in the 2018 Major League (MLB) First Year Player Draft, this past June. Pitchers Jack DeGroat and Jackson Bertsch and outfielder/catcher Tre Todd also heard their names called. The Chicago Cubs selected Artis in the seventh round, 218th overall, becoming the highest Liberty player taken in the draft since pitcher Jason Jones was selected by the New York Yankees in the fourth round with the 129th pick of the 2004 draft. DeGroat, who sat out 2018 due to injury, was selected in the 11th round by Cleveland, while Todd was choosen in the 21st by the Los Angeles Dodgers and Bertsch was taken in the 29th by the New York Yankees. Liberty has had 68 players selected in the MLB Draft in program history. Six Flames have gone on to play with a major league level. Cordell Reaches Majors Outfielder Ryan Cordell became the sixth former Liberty Flame to play in the major leagues, when he pinch ran in the ninth inning and scored on a walk-off home run in the Chicago White Sox's 4-2 win over Detroit on Sept. 3, Cordell who played at Liberty from , went on to play in 19 games with the White Sox, posting a.108 batting average and hitting a home run last September. Since returning to the lineup from injury on last Friday, Cam Locklear has driven in five runs and posted a.500 on base percentage. This past Sunday, freshman Gray Betts entered Liberty's contest against Maine as a pinch hitter in the fourth innign and took over in left field, collecting his first collegiate hit later in the game. Betts also walked and was hit by a pitch, scoring twice. Jaylen Guy reached base three times and scored twice in last Sunday's 7-1 win over Maine. Guy leads the Flames with four stolen bases. After starting seven games in left field, Brandon Rohrer started in right field on Tuesday against Virginia Tech. 8 The Road to Liberty YEAR HEAD COACH SCOTT JACKSON CAREER RECORD LIBERTY RECORD ALMA MATER WIFE CHILDREN THIRD SAME Campbell '98 Sarah Ryan, Tyler No stranger to the Liberty baseball program, having served as the Flames pitching coach in 2008, Scott Jackson was named its seventh head coach in June of In his first two seasons at the helm, Liberty has been among the nation s top 50 teams in runs scored, on base percentage and walks at the end of its season. The Flames have finished each of the past two years in the top two in the country at the end of each of its season in bases on balls, finishing first in 2017 and second in In addition, Liberty led the Big South Conference in runs scored and on base percentage each year. The Flames have also made their mark in the classroom, posting cumulative team GPA s of 3.0 or better in each of Jackson s seasons at the helm. The 2017 team posted a 3.03 team GPA and had 17 players selected the Big South Presidential Honor Roll. The 2018 squad boasted 19 Big South Presidential Honor Roll members and a team GPA of Despite losing three experienced pitchers to injury early in the season, Jackson was able to guide Liberty to a overall mark and finish third in its final year in the Big South Conference with a record in Jackson s Flames set new single season program records for bases on balls (356), fewest errors (48) and fielding percentage (.977). In addition to runs scored and on base percentage, Liberty also led the Big South in RBI, doubles, triples and walks. Following the season, D.J. Artis and catcher/outfielder Tre Todd were named to the all-conference first team, while third baseman Tyler Galazin and pitcher Garret Price received all-conference honorable mention. Artis and Todd, along with pitchers Jack DeGroat and Jackson Bertsch went on to be selected in the 2018 MLB Draft. Artis became the highest Liberty draft pick since pitcher Jason Jones was taken by the New York Yankees in the fourht round of the 2004 draft. In 2017, Jackson led the Flames to a record and a second place finish in the Big South regular season standings with a 16-8 mark. Following the season, Jackson saw Artis named the 2017 Big South Player of the Year and earn selection to three different All- American teams. In addition, he saw pitcher Caleb Evans drafted by the Oakland A s in the MLB Draft. Artis led the nation in walks and finished second in on base percentage, while on the mound, the Liberty pitching staff allowed the fewest runs in the conference. During his one season with the Flames in 2008 as their pitching coach, Jackson helped Liberty post a record and a 14-7 mark in Big South play. Liberty was the No. 2 seed at the 2008 Big South Baseball Championship and advanced to the event's title game. Following the 2008 season, two of Jackson's pupils were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. Left-hander Ryan Page was selected in the 20th round by the Toronto Blue Jays and right-hander David Stokes was taken by the Detroit Tigers in the 28th round. In 2008, Jackson became an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at North Carolina, where he spent eight seasons ( ). Jackson worked with the Tar Heels offense, as well as hitting, base running and infield play. During his eight seasons in Chapel Hill, N.C., Jackson helped North Carolina post a record, make three College World Series appearances (2009, 2011 and 2013), advance to six-straight NCAA Regionals ( ) and win the 2013 ACC Championship. Prior the 2013 season, Jackson was recognized by Baseball America as one of the top assistant coaches in the country. His efforts in building the Tar Heel roster and player development helped produce the most successful season in UNC Baseball history. The Tar Heels advanced to the College World Series and were one of the final three teams remaining in Omaha. The 2013 squad finished overall and 21-7 in ACC play, while recording Carolina s third ACC Championship. However, perhaps the biggest feat by the 2013 Tar Heels was that they never lost back-to-back games at any time during the season. During the Tar Heels' run to the 2011 College World Series, North Carolina had one of its top scoring seasons in school history. The Tar Heels finished the year ranked No. 10 in the country with 452 runs scored. After joining the coaching staff at North Carolina in July 2008, Jackson helped the Tar Heels have 44 players selected in the Major League Baseball Draft including coaching and/or recruiting eight first round picks, 7 top five round picks, and 10 top 10 round picks. Prior to his single season at Liberty as pitching coach, Jackson served five seasons on the staff at UNC Wilmington as pitching coach ( ). The Seahawks posted a three-consecutive 40-win seasons and captured the Colonial Athletic Association titles in 2004 and Having never been to a regional in school history, UNC Wilmington also advanced to NCAA Regional from 2003 (Baton Rouge), 2004 (Kinston) and 2006 (Chapel Hill). Under Jackson's tutelage, six Seahawk pitchers were selected in the MLB Draft after going undrafted out of high school including Brad Holt who was a 1st Rd. pick in 2008 (33rd overall) by the New York Mets. His pitching staffs established a number of school records at Wilmington, including strikeouts and saves. Jackson also had coaching stints at Campbell (2002), Barton (2001) and Wofford (2000). In addition to his collegiate work, Jackson also spent two seasons with the Wilmington Sharks, where he was an assistant 2000 and Head Coach in He led the Sharks to a league-best mark in 2002 as head coach and coached five MLB draft picks. Jackson is a 1998 graduate of Campbell with a bachelor's degree in physical education and he earned a master's degree in education in 2000, also from Campbell. During his playing days with the Camels, he played seven different positions and posted a career.268 batting average in 182 games. A native of Charlotte, N.C., Jackson is married to the former Sara Moore, who was a standout basketball player at Campbell. The couple has two sons, Ryan and Tyler.
