Hagerstown (21-14) holds a game lead over Greensboro (20-15) with Lakewood (19-15) currently 1.5 games back in the chase. The Suns won the First Half title in the Northern Division, and if Hagerstown wins the Second Half as well, the second-best overall team in the division will join them as a wild card in the playoffs. Intimidating Starter: Brannon Easterling, 25, makes his 11th start and 27th appearance of the season for Kannapolis. In his lone outing against the Grasshoppers, he took no decision in a quality start, with 6.0 innings worked, allowing two runs on seven hits in a July 7 start at NewBridge Bank Park. In his last start, Easterling spun 5.2 scoreless innings, limiting Delmarva to three hits and three walks while striking out two to earn a win in a road outing July 25. He is now 2-1 with a 2.40 ERA (12 ER/45.0 IP) in 10 starts compared to 3-1 with a 1.78 ERA (15 ER/35.1 IP) in 16 relief appearances. The White Sox selected him in the 20th round of the June 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of St. Edwards where he led the nation with 14 complete games in Birmingham Barons (Double-A) Southern League (North) th 7.0 GB Last Night: L, 5-4 (12) vs. Mississippi Hoppers Hurler: Justin Jacome, 22, makes his seventh 11th and 15th appearance of 2016 as he faces the Intimidators for the second time. He spun 3.0 scoreless innings against Kannapolis on July 8 before rain suspended the game, cutting short his start. He allowed three hits and hit a batter while striking out one in the contest. Jacome is coming off a hard-luck loss, allowing two runs (one earned) in 5.0 innings on July 25 at home against Augusta. In his last four starts, he is 0-2 despite a 2.25 ERA (4 ER/16.0 IP) and 16 strikeouts, including a career-high eight strikeouts in 4.0 innings in a July 14 loss at Greenville. Jacome was nearly untouchable in June, going 0-0 with a 0.75 ERA (1 ER/12.0 IP) and 10 strikeouts in his five games (one start). Jacome opened the season 0-1 with a 4.42 ERA in four April games (four starts) before missing all of May. The Marlins selected him in the fifth round of the June 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of UC Santa Barbara where he was teammates with Hickory s Dillon Tate. Those marks set new seasonhighs by an Intimidators arm for runs allowed (previously 7 by Chris Comito, June 1 vs. Augusta), earned runs allowed (previously 6, 3x, last by Frebis, July 24 at Delmarva, and hits allowed (previously 10, 4x, last by Frebis, July 24 at Delmarva). Woods, who is batting.229 (25-109), has an on-base percentage of.370 thanks in large part to his ability to walk. He has reached base on balls 23 times in 33 games with Kannapolis since joining the team to start the Second Half. No one in the South Atlantic League has drawn more walks than Woods since June 23, as Lakewood s Zach Coppola and Delmarva s Yermin Mercedes are each tied for second in the league with 20 walks since the All-Star Break. Against the Grasshoppers, Woods is batting.217 (5-23) however has an on-base percentage of.514 thanks to the fact that 14 of his 23 walks have come in 10 games against the Grasshoppers. Who You Gonna Call: Alex Call went 2-4 on Saturday, raising his batting average to.382 (21-55) in 13 games with Kannapolis. The White Sox third round pick in this June s draft has hit safely in 11 of his 13 games with the Intimidators, including his last six. Sullivan Reaches the Century Mark: Tyler Sullivan turned in another strong performance at the top of the lineup in Friday night s 6-4 win. The leadoff man collected three hits third time this season adding to his team lead in hits. The second hit of the night, a single to center field, registered as his 100th hit of the year the first Intimidator to reach that mark this season. The Sheriff Guns Down Two More: It did not take long before Seby Zavala made his impact felt once he was activated from the disabled list on Friday. In the first inning of Friday s game, Anfernee Seymour stole second and then tried for third only to be thrown out by Zavala who then caught Angle Reyes trying to take second base in the seventh inning. Zavala has now thrown out 36 runners this season. The San Diego State product has now thrown out.396 percent (36 CS/ 91 ATT) of those have tried to steal against him, third best in the Sally League behind Augusta s Matt Winn at.472 (42/89) and Asheville s Chris Rabago at.427 (32/75). Zavala s 36 caught stealing are also third behind Winn and West Virginia s Christian Kelley (38). Upcoming Probable Pitchers: Kannapolis/Opponents.. 15 Intimidating moments of the 2016 season Burning the Midnight Oil On Monday, April 18, the Intimidators played 16 innings in an eventual 8-7 loss at West Virginia in a game that took 5 hours, 1 minute, the fourth longest on record in Intimidators history. The longest game of the 2016 season, which started Monday at 7:07 p.m. and didn t end until the early hours of Sunday morning, is only the fourth 5-hour game in Intimidators history on record (since 2005, the first year MLBAM stats). On Tuesday, May 31, the Intimidators started a game against Augusta that would not end until 1:01 a.m. on June 1 when the GreenJackets were able to push the go-ahead run across in the top of the 17th inning. The game is the longest for the Intimidators both in terms of time and innings since Longest Games since 2005 (by Time of Game): T.O.G. Kannapolis, a Southern Division team at the time, won the 2nd Half and opened at home against the RiverDogs. The Intimidators in the bottom of the 21st when Chris Getz s 2-out single scored Boomer Berry, giving Kannapolis a series lead, 1-0. Kannapolis went on to win the series and beat Hagerstown in the South Atlantic League Championship Series to claim the franchise s only title. Something About April 18: Monday night s 16-inning marathon may have been one of the longest in the history of the Intimidators, however it still falls woefully short of the longest game ever played, which also started on April 18, The Pawtucket Red Sox (AAA, Red Sox) and Rochester Red Wings (AAA, Orioles at the time) played the longest game in baseball history, a 33-inning affair, that the PawSox won, 3-2. The game took more than eight hours over two days to complete and featured future Hall of Famers Cal Ripken Jr. of Rochester and Wade Boggs of the PawSox. The game started April 18 and was halted at 4:09 a.m. the following morning by order of International League president Harold Cooper. The teams resumed the game on June 23. Massey s RBI-Streak: Grant Massey went 0-4 and did not drive in a run on Sunday, his first game without an RBI since July 13. From July 14-23, he played in all eight Intimidators games played and hit.464 (13-28) with 11 RBI and four doubles, coming through with at least one RBI in each game. Massey has driven in 13 runs in 20 games in the month of July compared to 15 RBI in 56 games from the start of the season through June. On Saturday, Massey enjoyed the first 4- game game of his career. Banks was money in shutout Tanner Banks was money on April 20, tossing a nineinning, complete-game shutout to lead the Intimidators past the West Virginia Power, 1-0, at Appalachian Power Park. Banks worked around four hits and a walk while becoming the first Kannapolis pitcher to work nine innings in an outing since Banks struck out five batters and threw a total of 97 pitches - 76 for strikes - en route to the longest start of his career. The Intimidators needed every pitch from Banks after Kannapolis played 25 innings in the previous two games, taxing the bullpen. The game lasted an hour and 56 minutes, the shortest contest of the season and more than three hours quicker than Monday night s 16-inning marathon that continued for more than five hours. Banks performance is the first individual shutout by an Intimidators pitcher since June 3, 2014, when Thaddius Lowry spun a rain-shortened 5-inning no-hitter against the Power at Appalachian Power Park. The 9-inning scoreless outing is the first by an Intimidators starting pitcher since Spencer Arroyo spun 9.0 scoreless innings on June 18, 2011, against Greensboro, however Arroyo took no decision as Kannapolis needed 12 innings to beat the Grasshoppers that evening, 1-0. Banks tossed the first 9-inning complete game since at least Back-To-Back Jacks Corey Zangari and Danny Mendick hit back-toback home runs for Kannapolis against Asheville on May 22, the first time the Intimidators have had back-to-back home runs since July 7, 2014, when Ryan Leonards and Adam Engel went yard in consecutive at-bats against Greensboro. One-Hit Wonders Kannapolis earned a win despite being 1-hit on June 3 in Charleston, the lowest hit total for the Intimidators in On April 9, Hickory limited the Intimidators to a previous season low four hits. The last time Kannapolis managed just one hit came July 25, 2014, at Hagerstown as Lucas Giolito and Joseph Webb combined to pitch the Suns to a 5-1 win. The Intimidators lone hit on June 3 in Charleston came in the top of the first inning when Johan Cruz singled to left field with one out. The Intimidators enacted revenge against the RiverDogs with the win despite being 1-hit in Charleston. On April 28, 2013, Intimidators arms Jake Cose and Braulio Ortiz combined to 1-hit the RiverDogs at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park but Charleston scored a 1-0 win over Kannapolis. Banks an asset, named SAL Pitcher of the Week Left-handed pitcher Tanner Banks earned South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of April 18-24, the league announced Monday. Banks tossed a 9-inning complete game shutout on April 20 at West Virginia in his lone appearance of the week to become the first Kannapolis Intimidators pitcher to work nine scoreless innings since Banks earned a win against the Power, improving to 3-0 on the season while lowering his ERA to 1.42 through three starts in He worked around four hits and a walk while striking out five in the outing. The Intimidators have not had a starting pitcher throw a 9-inning complete game shutout since at least The last Kannapolis starting pitcher to work nine full innings came June 18, 2011, when Spencer Arroyo spun nine scoreless innings in an Intimidators 12-inning win, 1-0, against Greensboro. The Chicago White Sox selected Banks in the 18th round of the June 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Utah. In 2015, he made eight relief appearances with Kannapolis before joining the starting rotation of Advanced Rookie Great Falls, going 5-5 with a Pioneer League-best 2.51 ERA in 14 games (14 starts) for the Voyagers en route to being named a co-recipient of the Logan Hurlbert Pitcher of the Year Award in the PL. Banks, a mid- and post-season All-Star in the PL in 2015, served as the league s starting pitcher for the 2015 PL All-Star Team. Hey Now, You re An All-Star: Four Intimidators have been named to the 57th Annual SAL All-Star Game in Lexington, Ky., on June 21 at Whitaker Bank Ballpark, the league announced on June 7. Pitchers Tanner Banks and Zach Thompson, outfielder Landon Lassiter and catcher Seby Zavala all earned All-Star honors, giving Kannapolis it s most All-Star selections since sending four players to the 2012 All-Star Game in Charleston. In 2013, Intimidators second baseman Micah Johnson won All-Star Game MVP.
