Almonte (6-4) retired 18 straight batters before Augusta s Jeremy Sy singled up the middle with two outs in the ninth to break up the gem. Almonte, whom the hite Sox acquired in February from the Angels as part of the trade for Gordon Beckham, worked a career-long 8 and 2/3 innings the longest outing by an Intimidators starter since He struck out a career-high-tying six, walked one, and hit a batter before giving up back-to-back base hits with two outs in the ninth to end his outing. Kelvis Valerio struck out Sylker Ewing to end the game and preserve the Intimidators South Atlantic eague-leading 10th shutout. Valerio earned the save (3) while Almonte collected the win. ouie echich provided the defensive gems necessary for a pitcher to flirt with history, making diving grabs in both the seventh and eighth innings to take away sure hits from Augusta. ith the game scoreless into the ninth inning, echich again came through for Kannapolis (4-6 Second Half, 39-40). Eddy Alvarez singled to lead off the inning and used a wild pitch and Mason Robbins sac-bunt to move to third base. ith the infield in, Alvarez broke from third on a echich grounder to second base and slid under the tag of catcher Aramis Garcia to score the game s only run. echich drove in his team-leading 44th RBI.
