Kannapolis, which is currently 4-2 on this trip, is coming off back-to-back wins at Delmarva and today sends right-hander Blake Hickman to the mound for his third professional start. The I s have climbed to 2.0 games back of first place in the South Atlantic eague Northern Division First Half standings with eight games left, including four against the current division leaders Hagerstown starting Tuesday in Kannapolis. Intimidating Starter: Blake Hickman, 23, makes his third professional start and third on the road as he faces an Orioles affiliate for the first time. The right-hander is coming off a career-long 6.1 innings of work in a no decision at akewood on June 7, allowing three unearned runs on four hits while striking out three and walking two. Hickman missed his first two seasons while recovering from Tommy John surgery on June 20, 2015, shortly after the hite Sox selected him in seventh round of the June 2015 First-Year Player Draft. The former Iowa University Hawkeye was named a ouisville Slugger ThirdTeam All-American, an ABCA second-team All-Midwest Region honoree, and first-team All-Big Ten after tying for the fifth-most wins (nine) in the Big Ten. Hickman graduated in 2012 from Simeon Career Academy in Chicago, Ill. Dealing for Delmarva: Alex ells, 20, makes his 12th start of the season for Delmarva and his first against a hite Sox affiliate. He is coming off a hard-luck loss at est Virginia on June 7, allowing three runs on seven hits over 7.0 innings. ells opened June with 7.0 scoreless innings in a win over Hickory. In nine of his 11 outings, he has allowed just two earned runs or fewer, including one earned run or fewer in eight starts this season. Alex is the twin brother of Fort Myers Miracle pitcher achlan ells. He was born in Newcastle, New South ales, Australia. About ast Night: Micker Adolfo mashed his fourth home run in nine games as the Intimidators beat the Shorebirds 6-2 on Sunday. Kannapolis (33-27) scored its second straight win as Adolfo finished 2for-3 with a pair of walks, an RBI, and a run scored. The Intimidators staked themselves to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, and the Shorebirds never recovered. Mitch Roman, who was added to the South Atlantic eague All-Star team earlier in the day, led off the inning with a double to left field and moved to third on a Zach Remillard groundout. After Casey Schroeder walked, Grant Massey followed with a 2-run triple. Joel Booker added a sac-fly to cash Massey for the 3-0 advantage. Schroeder homered (1) in the fourth, and Adolfo blasted a solo home run (6) with two outs in the fifth for a 5-0 lead. Delmarva took two runs back in the home half of the sixth, but Shorebirds second baseman Frank Crinella committed an error in the seventh that allowed Jameson Fisher to score for a 6-2 lead. Bernardo Flores (6-4) earned the win, his team-lead-tying sixth and fifth on the road, by limiting Delmarva to two runs on four hits over 5 and 1/3 innings, striking out three. In seven road starts, Flores is now 5-1 with a 1.50 ERA for Kannapolis. Relievers Danny Dopico and Kyle Kubat combined for 3 and 2/3 scoreless innings to close the game. Delmarva starting pitcher Jhon Peluffo (3-2) took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits including two home runs, walking three and striking out three. Hawkins Flies Away: Courtney Hawkins, the hite Sox top pick in the June 2012 First-Year Player Draft, has been transferred to Class A-Advanced inston-salem after batting.357 (10-28) in six games during his rehab assignment with Kannapolis. He opened the 2017 season with AA Birmingham before a pair of stints of the disabled list interrupted his season. After being placed on the Barons D on May 15, he was activated on June 6 and assigned to Kannapolis. In the last two games, he is 7-9 at the plate. Hansen Tops the Charts: Alec Hansen struck out eight on Saturday to run his South Atlantic eagueleading strikeout total to 82 in 66.2 innings this season. The hite Sox No. 10 Prospect is also fourth in the league in innings pitched, tied for fourth in wins (6), and 10th in ERA (2.57). Among starters, he ranks fourth in highest strikeouts/9 IP ratio at The hite Sox selected Hansen in the second round of the June 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of Oklahoma. Two-Ball Troubles: Kannapolis hit into three more double plays on Sunday, giving the team seven in the last two games. The I s hit into a season-high four double plays on Saturday, the first time the Intimidators had endured four double plays since May 21, 2016, when Kannapolis hit into four in the first game of a doubleheader. Now three times this season, the Intimidators hit into three double plays, most recently on May 11 at Augusta before this series. Hey Now, You re An All-Star: Mitch Roman has been added to the South Atlantic eague All-Star Game, giving the team six All-Stars this season. Starting pitchers Jimmy ambert and Alec Hansen, closer Mike Morrison, catcher Seby Zavala, and centerfielder Joel Booker will represent Kannapolis in the league s mid-summer classic on June 20 in Columbia, S.C. Big Fish: Jameson Fisher began his career night with a bang, launching a solo home run (3) with one out in the first inning for a quick 1-0 lead. In the third, he drove in Grant Massey on a base hit to right field for a 2-0 lead. Fisher finished his night with singles to lead off the sixth, on a bunt-hit to reach base in the seventh, and an RBI base-knock in the eighth. The hite Sox fourth round pick in the June 2016 First-Year Player Draft, Fisher is the first Intimidators player with five hits in a game since April 12, 2012, when Keenyn alker went 5-for-5 at exington. He is the 10th player in franchise history with a 5-hit game and seventh in the Intimidators era (since 2001). Antonio Rodriguez and Joel Booker took Hoppers starting pitcher Braxton Garrett deep in the second inning, and Zach Remillard launched against reliever Ryley MacEachern. In the top of the 10th, Seby Zavala bombed to left field off.j. Brewster for an 8-7 lead before the Grasshoppers rallied for two runs in the home half of the 10th for an extra-inning walk-off win. The team s previous season-high was three home runs on April 14 at Hickory. Zavala homers twice Catcher Seby Zavala homered twice in the second game of a doubleheader with Hickory on May 19 at home. Zavala finished 2-for-3 with three RBI. He became the first I s batter with two home runs in a game since Eddy Alvarez hit two at est Virginia on August 23, A-Rod triples twice Designated hitter Antonio Rodriguez tripled twice on May 3, to help lead the Intimidators to a 7-4 win over the Augusta GreenJackets. Rodriguez finished the night 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and a run scored. He became the first I s batter since John Ziznewski on September 2, 2015 versus Hagerstown to triple twice in one game. The SA record for triples by an individual in a game is by George Bell of Spartanburg in Dunning done with SA Starting pitcher Dane Dunning earned a promotion to High-A inston-salem on April 28 after going 2-0 with a 0.35 ERA (1 ER/26.0 IP) and 33 strikeouts in four starts at the Class A level. He dominated his former organization on April 26, blanking the Nationals-affiliated Suns with 6.0 scoreless innings, running his streak of innings without an earned run allowed to 25. At the time of his promotion, Dunning, the No. 10 Prospect in the Sox organization according to MB.com, owned the third-lowest ERA in the Sally eague and led the circuit in HIP (0.58) and average (.143), ranks third in strikeouts, and fourth in innings. Dunning became the first Intimidators player to earn a promotion to High-A in Dunning Fans 13 at Hickory Dane Dunning, the hite Sox No. 10 Prospect entering this season according to MB.com, struck out a careerhigh 13 batters on April 13 at Hickory. The right-hander whom the hite Sox acquired from the Nationals along with ucas Giolito and Reynaldo opez in exchange for Adam Eaton on December 7, 2016, also worked a careerlong 8.0 innings. The 13-strikeout performance was the best by an individual Intimidators pitcher since Jake Cose also fanned 13 at Hickory on May 24, Moments: Five Double Plays Kannapolis turned a five double plays in a 2-1 win on August 14 against akewood, equaling the most by the team in recorded history (since 2005). Since the 2005 season, there have been 25 South Atlantic eague games where a team has turned five double plays with Kannapolis turning in three of those performances. The Intimidators also turned five double plays on July 28, 2009, against Rome and on May 12, 2010, in an 8-3 home win over Delmarva. Kannapolis is one of four SA teams with three 5-double-play games since 2005, along with Augusta, Greensboro, and Rome. The Intimidators have not hit into five twin kills since In that time, Rome has hit into five double plays four times. In South Atlantic eague history, there have only been a pair of games where a team turned six double plays: Greenville did it on August 10, 1968, and Asheville also accomplished the feat on May 27, Rodriguez first SA PO since 2014 Intimidators outfielder Antonio Rodriguez earned SA Player of the eek for July 25-31, 2016, after batting.417 (10-24) with seven RBI and four extra base hits as Kannapolis went 5-2 during the week. Rodriguez, who slashed.417/.417/.708 for the week, helped the Intimidators to the team s biggest offensive performance of the season with three hits, including a home run, in the 16-3 win over Delmarva on July 26. In that game, Kannapolis set season-highs for runs (16), hits (24), and home runs (4). Rodriguez is the second Intimidators player to earn a weekly plaudit in 2016, joining Tanner Banks who was named Pitcher of the eek for April following his 9.0 inning complete game shutout at est Virginia on April 20. This is the first Player of the eek award winner for the Intimidators since Trey Michalczewski, June 2-9, Banks named Pitcher of the eek Tanner Banks earned South Atlantic eague Pitcher of the eek honors for the week of April 18-24, He tossed a 9-inning complete game shutout on April 20 at est Virginia in his lone appearance of the week to become the first Kannapolis Intimidators pitcher to work nine scoreless innings since 2011.
