Iowa righty Randy Wells takes on Isotopes righty Jeff Fulchino. The Cubs won 9-7 in ten innings last night and have scored nine runs in each of the series first two games. TONIGHT S STARTER: Randy Wells makes his second start after beating Round Rock 6-2 last Friday. His six innings in that start is the most by an Iowa starter this year. After starting 4-1 in AAA last year, Wells finished 5-5 with a 4.96 ERA for Iowa. Before his promotion on June 24, 2006, he was 4-2 with a 1.59 ERA in 12 starts for double-a West Tenn. CUBS VS. ISOTOPES: The Cubs lead the season series 2-0. The Cubs are all-time against the Isotopes (19-13 in Des Moines and in Albuquerque). The Cubs were 10-6 against the Isotopes in 2006 (6-2 in Des Moines and 4-4 in Albuquerque). WORKIN OVERTIME: Last night was the Iowa Cubs first extra innings contest and win of The Cubs were 4-6 in extra inning affairs in LIVE LUMBER: The Cubs won last night despite their pitching staff allowing season highs in runs (7) and hits (14). MICAH s BIG NIGHT: Micah Hoffpauir tied a Cubs season high set Monday by Eric Patterson and Felix Pie with three hits in a game. Last night s four RBI are a new game high for a Cub hitter. RADIOACTIVE RELIEF: Isotope relievers have taken the loss in each of the series first two games and in 8.2 innings have allowed 12 runs, 11 earned on 15 hits. That s an ERA of BOMBS AWAY: The Cubs hit their first three homeruns of the year last night and now have more homeruns than four other PCL teams. The Tucson Sidewinders are the only homerless squad in the league. LEAGUE LEADER: Felix Pie leads the league in runs scored (nine) and is fifth in the PCL with a.474 (9H/19AB) batting average. WILD THINGS: Including last night, Cubs pitchers have walked home a run three times in the team s first six games. The walk has either tied the game or put Iowa s opponents out in front. A wild pitch and a passed ball have brought home two more free runs for the opposition. BUMPS AND BRUISES: Casey McGeehee left last night s game with a strained wrist and is day-to-day. PRIOR SITUATION: Mark Prior, who was optioned to Iowa, has been assigned to extended spring training and will join Iowa when his pitch count reaches a number that will allow him to be a starter. This is the fourth straight season Prior has begun on the disabled list. TOP PROSPECT: Baseball America has rated centerfielder Felix Pie as the Cubs top prospect in 2007 (also #1 in 2006). Also cracking the top 10 list were 2B Eric Patterson (#6) and 3B Scott Moore (#7). Pie s assignment to Iowa marks the sixth time in the last 11 years that the Cubs top prospect has opened the season with Iowa, joining Brooks Kieschnick (1996), Kerry Wood (1998), Corey Patterson (2001) and Hee Seop Choi (2003). Mark Prior was the Cubs top prospect in 2002 but did not join the Iowa Cubs until May of 2002 and Kerry Wood was the top prospect in 1997 but did not join the I-Cubs until July of COACHING STAFF: Buddy Bailey is in his first season as manager of the Iowa Cubs and in his second in the Cubs organization. He spent the 2006 season as the Cubs catching and baserunning coordinator. Bailey, 50, is in his 28 th year in pro ball, and his 18 th season as a manager. He spent seven seasons managing Boston s triple-a affiliate in Pawtucket and has a career record of (.514). He was named IL Manager of the Year in 1996 and 2003, (fourth manager to win that award twice). He spent three years as a player in the Atlanta Braves system from , batting.210 with six home runs and 45 runs batted in. Von Joshua is back for his second year as Iowa s hitting coach and former Iowa Cub Mike Harkey is in his first year as Iowa s pitching coach. Harkey spent 2006 as a bullpen coach for the Florida Marlins. It is his eighth year as a pitching coach. Trainer Bob Grimes returns for his 11 th season with Iowa.
