Roster Redevelopment The Los Angeles Angels announced the following changes to the Travelers roster Wednesday. Two position players join from single-a Inland Empire; Outfielder Travis Witherspoon and infielder Brian Hernandez. Witherspoon joins the Travs after starting in left field in last night s annual California League/Carolina League All Star Game where he went 1-for-4 with a stolen base. He led the 66ers with a.319 batting average, ranking 10th in the Cal League. He also hit 7 home runs and stole 25 bases, 3rd in the league. Hernandez comes to the Travs after playing mostly third base at Inland Empire and batted.292 with 3 home runs and 33 RBI in 65 games. Pitcher Daniel Tillman was reassigned to Inland Empire and outfielder Rian Kiniry was released. Carmona Released Before last night s game against Springfield, relief pitcher Ysmael Carmona was released by the Los Angeles Angels. He had made just 4 appearances with the Travs since coming off the disabled list in early June and was 0-1, 1.93 ERA. Travs and Angels Last night s 2-0 win at NW Arkansas was the 704th victory for the Travs during their 12-year affiliation with the Los Angeles Angels. During this time, the Travs hold a record of (.440 pct) as the Angels double-a affiliate and own two Texas League titles (2001, 2008). The 2012 season is the last on the current Player Development Contract between the franchises which was signed in September The Travs posted a record in 35 years as a St. Louis Cardinals affiliate for the franchise s all-time record. Travs Bump Offense Up Offensively the Travs fared much better in the 4 games with Springfield than they did in 4 nights against the Tulsa Drillers. In winning 3 of 4 games over the Cards the Travs batted.273 (32-117) with 18 runs after batting just.160 (20-125) during the Tulsa series scoring just 4 runs. Hard Luck Starters In the past 14 games the Travs starting pitching has put together a very good 2.42 ERA (92.2 ip/25 er), but they ve only been given 40 runs of support during that time and sport a 4-7 record. Arkansas Diamond Series The Travelers now lead the fifth annual Arkansas Diamond Series at The home club has been dominant in the 2012 season series with the Travs 7-1 at Dickey-Stephens Park, but 3-8 at Arvest Ballpark. All-time the Travelers hold a regular season record against NW Arkansas and a record at Arvest Ballpark. Stars To Shine In Tulsa Thursday the Texas League released the rosters for the 76th Texas League All-Star Game and 4 players will represent the Arkansas Travelers on the North Division team. Both A.J. Schugel and Ariel Pena have been voted to the pitching staff. Roberto Lopez and Jean Segura will come off the bench when the North and South battle at ONEOK Field in Tulsa on June 28. Golden Graham Caleb Graham has asserted himself as one of the most reliable relievers in the Texas League over the past two months. In fact Graham has put together a streak of 11 consecutive scoreless outings dating back to May 13. During that time he s pitched 14.2 innings and allowed just 12 batters to reach base (7 hits, 4 walks, 2 hbp) and struck out 15 batters. Ariel Stuffing It After helping to combine on a one-hitter on Saturday at NW Arkansas, Travs right hander Ariel Pena is on a roll. Since his ERA reached its high-water mark at 4.94 on April 30 Pena has made 10 starts and has become one of the Texas League s most dominant starters. Although his 4-2 record in that time is pedestrian, Pena holds the TL s 2nd lowest ERA at 2.05 (14 er/61.1 ip) and the 7th lowest batting average against of.227. He s also 4th in the TL with 61.1 innings and 2nd with 59 strikeouts during this time. Arenas Returns In Relief Orangel Arenas made his first appearance in a game Thursday against Springfield since taking a line drive off his left foot Navarro in the 1st inning on June 9 at NW Arkansas. Mike Piazza has taken over Arenas s spot in the starting pitching rotation for now. Series-ly Speaking A win this afternoon clinches the Travs first series win on the road against a North Division foe. Even with back-to-back wins the Travs are 8-19 at other North Division ballparks and have dropped 5 of 6 series with 1 split at Springfield. A win today would also give the Travs back-to-back series wins for the first time this season after taking 3-of-4 games from the Springfield Cardinals at home. They ve dropped 11 of 18 series for the year with 5 series wins, 2 series wins have come against the San Antonio Missions, 2 other series wins were against the NW Arkansas Naturals at Dickey-Stephens Park. On the road this year the Travs have lost 8 of 10 series.
