The pitching staff also featured their lowest ERA for any month at Previously the Travs best month had been April (10-14). Maronde Marooned in Arkansas The Los Angeles Angels announced Tuesday that left handed pitcher Nick Maronde will joins the Travs starting rotation. The 22-year old Maronde was selected by the Angels in the 3rd round of the 2011 draft out of the University of Florida. He joins the Travs after posting a 3-1 record and 1.82 ERA in 10 starts for Inland Empire in the California League. Maronde struck out 60 batters and walked just 14 in 59.1 innings of work. He did miss two months with a strained lat muscle from early May through early July 10. Bergy Back In Pen The Angels also sent relief pitcher Jeremy Berg from Salt Lake to the Travelers on Monday. The 26 year old right hander made 35 appearances at Salt Lake with a 2-1 record and 3.56 ERA. He d struck out 50 batters and issued only 15 walks in55.2 innings with a.255 average allowed. Berg also made 29 appearances for the Travs in 2010 and 2011 with a 3-1 record and 2.23 ERA. Multi Dingerrama After just one multi home run game from an individual player over the first 105 games of the season, there have been backto-back games in which a Traveler batter has hit two home runs. On Monday, Roberto Lopez yanked a pair of solo home runs while Travis Witherspoon on Sunday when he crushed two solo shots off the Drillers Tyler Chatwood. Casey Haerther also hit two homers on June 13 at Springfield. The Pizza Boy Awarded Travs pitcher Mike Piazza was named the Texas League s Pitcher of the Week for July 22 through July 29 becoming the second Travs pitcher to win the award in the last two weeks. He made one start and two relief appearances during the week and allowed no runs in 13.2 innings on just 7 base hits and 3 walks adding 12 strikeouts. Piazza currently is on a streak of 18.2 innings without allowing a run. Roadies The Travs concluded their most successful road trip of the season Monday with a 5-2 record, the club s second winning trip of the season. The Travs scored 40 runs in the on the trip while compiling a.263 avg (61-232) with 8 home runs. The trip included the Travs largest inning of the season when they scored 7 runs on just 3 base hits in the 5th inning on Wednesday at Springfield. Travs N Birds The Travs and Cardinals have played 216 games since Springfield joined the Texas League in With a record against Springfield this year, the Travs are all-time against the Cardinals although the Travs pulled out just their second season-series win over Springfield in 2011 going against the Redbirds, which included an 8-6 record at Hammons Field. The Home of the Cardinals has been a trap for the Travs as they ve gone just at Hammons Field, but are against the Cardinals at Dickey-Stephens Park Ma-Grube-Er On Friday the Travs received free agent pitcher Jarrett Grube who signed a contract with the Angels last week. The 30-year old joins the Travs after being released by the Seattle Mariners where he d spent the past two seasons at their AA and AAA affiliate. For further information on Grube s career see the relief pitcher section of the notes on page three. Series-ly Speaking With wins in the first three games of this series at Tulsa, the Travs are on a three-series winning streak. It s also their first set of back-to-back series wins for the year, but still the Travs have dropped 17 of 28 series for the year with 8 series wins. Second Half Success The Travs are enjoying their longest sustained run of success over the past two weeks with wins in 12 of 16 games and victories in 14 of their past 20 games. The only stretches that compare are the club s longest winning streak (5 games) from April 17 through April 22 and a stretch of 5 wins in 6 games from May 16 through May 21. Another Close One Although last night s 11-9 loss was the first since last Monday decided by 2 runs or less, the have played 61 out of 108 games decided by 2 runs or less this year representing 57 percent of the games played by the Travs. In these games their record is In games decided by 1 run the Travs are In games decided by 2 runs they hold a 9-8 record. The Travs and Drillers played 18 games decided by 2 runs or less (Tulsa 12-6) and 12 by 1 run (Tulsa 9-3). The Travs and Cardinals have a total of 5 games decided by 1 run with the Travs enjoying a 4-1 edge. Binary Games The Travs have scored 1 or 0 runs in 22 games this year representing 20% of all games played. Raising the bar to 2 runs shows the Travs scoring 2 or fewer runs in 37 games equaling 40% of the total games played. Power Outage Although the Travs hit 10 home runs over the previous 5 games they ve only hit 59 home runs this season, fewest in the Texas League by 28 behind the next lowest total and tied for 55th amongst the 60 clubs that represent the High Minors (Double-A and Triple-A). The Travs have just 2 home run that scored 3 or 4 runs this season while allowing 17 homers of 3 or more runs. Southern Aggression It might be a good thing that the Travs only play 33 percent of their games against teams from the Texas League South Division. Their record (.333 win pct) stands considerably worse than the mark (.486 win pct) against the TL North. A closer look reveals the Travs southern issues comes down to the RockHounds, RoughRiders and Hooks this year who they ve compiled a 7-18 record. Travs and Angels During the 12 seasons of the affiliation with the Los Angeles Angels, the Travs hold a record of (.441 pct) as the Angels double-a affiliate and own two Texas League titles (2001, 2008). The 2012 season is the last on the current Player Development Contract between the franchises which was signed in September The Travs posted a record in 35 years as a St. Louis Cardinals affiliate for the franchise s all-time record. Haynes Returns...Again On May 30 Nathan Haynes joined the Travs coaching staff as batting/first base coach replacing Francisco Matos who had been promoted to Triple-A Salt Lake. Haynes is the second former Travs player to rejoin the team as a coach in the past two years. In fact Haynes was the opening day centerfielder and number two batter when the Travs opened their first season as an affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels. He played in 79 games for that 2001 Travs team ( , 33 sb) but was shutdown with a wrist injury. He had two more stints with the Travelers in 2003 and 2006 playing in a total of 222 games with the franchise.
