Last weekend was the conference opener for all 10 other teams in the conference and the Hoosiers will now have to play conference foes for each of the next eight weeks. Indiana is looking to end a 10-game losing streak following a 11-0 loss to No. 23 Louisville in six innings last Wednesday at the IU Softball Field. Indiana State is on the season and is still looking for its first win in Missouri Valley Conference play (0-5) after losing all three games to Northern Iowa last weekend. Bailey Wittenauer leads the team in nearly every offensive category while Amber Paz was 4-for-10 against UNI to pace the Sycamore bats. SCHEDULE NOTES There have been some changes to the IU schedule recently, including the rescheduling of a doubleheader against Evansville. The March 25th doubleheader was cancelled due to rain and has now been slated for April 13, starting at 2 p.m. at the IU Softball Field This upcoming weekend at Iowa, both games were originally listed as being a part of the BigTenNetwork.com s streaming games package, but it was recently discovered that there will not be streaming video of those games. Live audio and statistics will be available through IUHoosiers.com as usual. ORDER DOES NOT MATTER... Sophomore Samantha Berenter has been hitting from any spot in the order this season. She has 17 at-bats in the No. 7 spot in the order and is hitting.353 with five doubles, five RBI and seven runs scored. In the No. 8 spot, she is hitting.429 in 14 at-bats with two doubles and three RBI. Recently she was moved up in the order and responded well, going 3-for-5 in cleanup spot with a home run and three RBI. IU SOFTBALL ON THE RADIO The Indiana University Department of Athletics announced earlier this winter that over 30 games on the IU softball schedule will be broadcast on IUHoosiers.com, and all games from here on out will be carried on the website. All of the broadcasts will be free of charge through Stretch Internet, and available by going to the softball schedule page on IUHoosiers.com. Dave Leno will have the call for all the broadcasts, with Nathan Wiechers providing color commentary.

2 2010 INDIANA SOFTBALL INDIANA STATE & IOWA 2 THE COACHES Indiana head coach Michelle Gardner is in her second season with the Hoosiers, and her eighth season as a collegiate head coach after spending six years at Nevada. Her career record is She has a pair of NCAA Regional appearances to her credit with the Wolfpack. Indiana State head coach Brenda Coldren is in her 8th season with the Sycamores and has an overall record of IMPROVEMENT EVERYWHERE The 2010 season has seen marked improvement across the board for the Hoosiers, but most noticeably at the plate, where they are hitting 57 points higher this season through 25 games as opposed to last season. Below is a comparison in a variety of categories from last year to this year: (Thru 25 Games) 2009 Category Wins Batting Average Runs Scored 82 9 Doubles Home Runs RBI Slugging Percentage Stolen Bases 20 6 Double Plays Turned Opponent Batting Average Team ERA Opponent ERA Opponent Been Caught Stealing 14 GLICK IS THE PICK TO CLICK Senior outfielder Jennifer Glueckert (pronounced Glickert ) was inserted into the leadoff spot in the batting order in all three games of the IU Classic and responded well. She went 5-for-9 (.556) with two doubles and a run scored. The South Bend native had appeared in the leadoff spot five times in both the 2008 and 2009 seasons. As a result of her hot hitting, she has taken over the team lead with a.328 batting average. In the last nine games, Glueckert is hitting.444 with two doubles, a triple and three runs scored. SLAMMIN SAMMY Sophomore Samantha Berenter has been locked in at the plate to start the season for the Hoosiers. She is third on the team with a.314 batting average and her.400 on-base percentage is tops on the squad. To put it in perspective, last year the Poway, Calif., native hit.143 in 63 plate appearances. She has also come up clutch in key situations this season, as she is hitting.476 (10-for-21) with runners on base and.500 (8-for-16) with runners in scoring position. The Hoosiers have played three true road games going into Tuesday s contest at Indiana State and Berenter leads IU with a.571 average and two RBI in those games INDIANA SOFTBALL ROSTER # Name Pos. 3 2010 INDIANA SOFTBALL INDIANA STATE & IOWA 3 B-SAUCE Breanna Saucedo was the straw that stirred the drink for the Hoosiers at the plate in Mississippi and has continued that for most of the year. She leads the team with 28 hits and is second with 12 runs scored. She has a trio of three-hit games to her credit this season, including a three-hit effort against Belmont where she also scored three runs. Saucedo is also a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts. BACK-TO-BACK JACKS Also in the game against Oregon, Olson and Cassie Gogreve hit back-to-back home runs to tie the game in the bottom of the second inning after the Ducks scored two in the top of the frame. It was the first time since March 18, 2007, when Tory Yamaguchi and Jennilee Huddleston went back-to-back against Chattanooga. BIG WIN VS. PAC-10 The Hoosiers 5-4 win against Oregon in Las Vegas marked the first victory for the Hoosiers over a Pac-10 school since the 1998 season when they claimed a 6-2 win over UCLA. The Ducks entered the ESPN. com/usa Softball Top 25 on March 16 at No. 25 after receiving votes for most of the season. They continue to receive votes in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll. GIVE ME A CHANCE Junior catcher Cassie Gogreve, who transferred to Indiana this season after playing her first two seasons at South Carolina, has been an impact player behind the plate for the Hoosiers. In those first two seasons, she played 26 games and started 14. In her first season with the Hoosiers, she has started all 24 games behind the plate and is fifth on the team with a.264 average. Her 12 RBI are tied for second on the team and she has struck out just seven times in 72 at-bats. DON T GO ON GOGREVE Opposing teams have been testing Gogreve on the base paths so far in 2010, but the native of South Pasadena, Calif., has been up to the task. She has thrown out 14-of-41 (34 percent) to lead the Big Ten in caught stealing. In one instance against Cal State Fullerton, Gogreve threw out runners attempting to steal third base on back-to-back pitches. DOBSON DOES IT pitcher Jessica Dobson picked up her first collegiate win in style against Jackson State, holding the Tigers to just one hit over five innings in the Hoosiers 8-0 victory. The lone hit came on a bloop single to center field in the top of the fifth. She also struck out a career-high six in the game. She came on in relief of Sara Olson in the first inning against Cleveland State and pitched the final 5.2 innings and allowed just one earned run on eight hits. STILL STANDING Junior outfielder Kelsey Stander has proved to be a terror on the bases for opponents to deal with as she enters her second season with the Hoosiers. This season, she is 5-for-7 in stolen base attempts, with three coming against Boise State, tying the IU singlegame record. It was the fifth time in school history that a player has stolen three bases in a game and the first since Julia Hamilton did it against Southern University on Feb. 5, In her career, Stander is 31-of-34 in stolen base attempts. She was 12-for-12 at Tennessee as a freshman and 14-for-15 last year at Indiana. SWINGIN SARA Junior utility player Sara Olson was one of the most dangerous Indiana players at the plate through the first seven games. In those seven games, she hit.400 with four home runs and six RBI. After hitting two home runs the first weekend at Kennesaw State, she followed that up with two more the following weekend in Las Vegas. In fact, she has been so much of a threat that UIC issued two intentional walks to Olson in one game. One of the intentional passes came with one out and the bases empty in a tie game in the fifth inning. Then in the game against Oregon, after she had already hit one bomb, she was issued an intentional pass with the bases empty and two outs in the seventh. The Hoosiers went on to mount a two-out rally and beat the Ducks on Jennifer Gluckert s walk-off single, 5-4. Olson enters play this weekend with 13 career home runs, tied for 10th on the all-time list at Indiana. LOWETH SHOWETH THE WAY pitcher Cassie Loweth battled injuries the first couple weeks of the season but showed she can add depth to the IU pitching staff. She came in and pitched a perfect inning of relief against Cleveland State and 1.2 innings of two-hit relief against Jacksonville State. Then she got the start against Long Island and went the distance, allowing 10 hits and four runs, but only one was earned and did not walk a batter in suffering the loss. FROSH FIRST When freshman Amanda Wagner hit two home runs against Boise State on Feb. 19, she became the first freshman to accomplish that since Brooke Monroe did it on Feb. 26, 1999, against Pittsburgh. She also scored three runs and has three hits in the game. TRUE UTILITY PLAYER Madison Diederich had been used as a pinch runner 13 times and played one inning at second base before she was given the start in right field against Central Michigan on March 21. She later moved in to play second base and made a spectactular diving catch in the hole towards first base. She later picked up her first career hit and scored a run. In Wednesday s game against No. 23 Louisville, Diederich started and played all six innings at third base. INDIANA S QUICK HITS... 4 2010 INDIANA SOFTBALL INDIANA STATE & IOWA 4 RETURNING STATS Despite the graduation of Emily Bergeson, the most potent bat in the IU lineup last season, the Hoosiers still have seven starters returning and over 73 percent of the at-bats from a season ago. In addition, 77 percent of the runs scored, 73 percent of the hits and 67 percent of the RBI all return to the team this season. THIRD TIME IS A CHARM Four different Hoosiers have collected three hits in a game already this season. But the one that had the biggest impact with senior Jennifer Glueckert s third hit of the game against Oregon. The senior had two strikes on her, with two outs and the game-winning run in scoring position, and delivered a sharp single into right field to give the Hoosiers the victory. Joining Glueckert with three hits in a game are Sara Olson, Bre Saucedo (three times) and Amanda Wagner. WRIGHT STUFF Redshirt senior Monica Wright had one of the best performances of her career against Oregon earlier this season, picking up her 27th career win. She was able to keep the potent Duck lineup off balance the entire game and got tremedous defensive effort from everyone on defense. The Morrison, Ill., native pitched her first complete game since May 3, 2008, and earned her first complete game victory since April 27, Wright allowed four runs on eight hits to go with three strikeouts and four walks. She came back and tossed four innings of two-hit softball against Belmont for her second win of the season. In Clearwater against Jacksonville State, Wright matched her career high with 10 strikeouts ACCOLADES The 2009 season saw a pair of IU players receive postseason accolades from the Big Ten Conference. Sara Olson, a junior this season, was named Third Team All-Big Ten at the Utility position while Emily Bergeson, a graduated senior, was named Third Team All-Big Ten at the shortstop position. Olson hit.259 in Big Ten play and trailed only Bergeson for the team lead in home runs and RBI in conference games. In the circle, her season was highlighted by the no-hitter she tossed against No. 16 Ohio State at the IU Softball Field. It also marked the first time since the 2006 season that a pair of Indiana players received a postseason honor from the conference. MORE ON THE NO-NO Sara Olson became the tenth player in Indiana history to pitch a no-hitter, joining the company of IU greats like Mariangee Bogado and Amy Unterbrink. For Olson, it was her first collegiate no-hitter and the 23rd all-time by an IU pitcher. The individual leader in the category is Unterbrink and her nine no-hitters. Olson s no-hitter was the first since Bogado turned the trick against Kentucky on April 12, 2009 in a 2-0 win. The native of Orland Park, Ill., Olson is the only one to pitch a no-hitter and lose the game. In her first season with the Cream and Crimson, Gardner helped Sara Olson lower her ERA by over a run and a half from her freshman to sophomore season. The team ERA also dropped by a third of a run and the staff as a whole issued over 100 fewer walks than in While at Nevada, Gardner had an overall record of and in WAC play and coached 34 Academic All-WAC selections, 13 preseason All-WAC selections, 21 postseason All-WAC honorees, 21 WAC Players of the Week, eight WAC All-Tournament selections, one WAC Tournament MVP and 2008 WAC Player of the Year, Vanessa Briones. The success of her players also began to show itself on the national scene, as three Wolf Pack players on the 2008 roster received NFCA All-West Region honors. Gardner is also the only softball coach in Nevada history to record at least 20 wins in each of her seasons as the head coach. Gardner, a native of Petersburg, Mich., led the Wolf Pack to an appearance in the NCAA Regional in 2008 and was named WAC Coach of the Year while her coaching staff was named NFCA West Region Staff of the Year following a school-best overall record. She also posted a 16-2 record in conference play to claim the WAC regular season title, also the first in program history. Yet another first in the 2008 season for Gardner came at the end the year when freshman catcher Noelle Micka was named NFCA Second Team All-American, the first Wolf Pack player to ever receive all-american laurels. The 2007 season saw four Wolf Pack players receive All-WAC honors en route to 28 wins and an appearance in the WAC Tournament finals. All of this came one year after Gardner led Nevada to the WAC regular season and tournament titles and the first-ever appearance in the NCAA Regionals in The Wolf Pack record dipped below.500 in 2005 but they were still able to land a player on the first and second all-conference teams. In 2004, Gardner led Nevada to a then-school record 38 wins and saw Candice Rainwater earn First Team All-WAC honors, the first time in school history a player was named to the first team. In her inaugural season in Reno in 2003, Gardner and the Wolf Pack went on the year and were still able to place a pair of players on the All-WAC Second Team. She was hired by Nevada in December of 2001 when the university decided to bring softball back as a varsity sport following a 14-year hiatus. The Wolf Pack began competing in the WAC with the start of the 2003 season and Gardner led them to 22 overall wins, the first of six consecutive seasons with 20-plus wins Before heading up the Nevada program, Gardner was an assistant coach at Arizona State ( ) and Florida State ( ) helping lead both schools to NCAA Regional appearances and a College World Series appearance at Arizona State. She was also an assistant coach at Bowling Green State University as well as a hitting and pitching instructor at the high school level. Gardner is a 1989 graduate of the University of Michigan with a degree in Physical Education, where she was a standout pitcher from In her senior season, she was named the Big Ten Player of the Year and garnered first team all-region honors as well. After exhausting her eligibility at Michigan, Gardner participated with several nationally-ranked Amateur Softball Association (ASA) teams in addition to competing in three Olympic festivals. She was also part of softball s first appearance in the 1996 Olympic Games when she took part in the Olympic Trials.
