The games came in 1974 with the Aggies winning 14-2 and the Big Red responding with a 14-9 victory. MORE ON CORNELL The Big Red are making their 2018 debut coming off a campaign. Cornell finished fifth overall in the Ivy League and third in the Lou Gehrig Division with a 9-11 conference ledger in The Big Red was selected 7th in the Ivy League Media Poll. Cornell batted.295 last season and they return five starters, including their top four hitters. Dale Wickham led the team with a.406 batting average, racking up 25 runs, 12 doubles and 17 RBI. Ryan Krainz batted.369 with 26 runs, nine doubles, one triple, 10 RBI and seven stolen bases. Pierre Le Dorze hit.324 with 22 runs, 10 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 16 RBI. Will Simoneit batted.317 with 16 runs, nine doubles, five home runs and 28 RBI. The pitching staff posted a 4.60 ERA last season, but need to replace ace Paul Balestrieri (5-4, 2.18 ERA) and closer Peter Lannoo (0-0, 3.86 ERA, 8 saves). Tim Willettes logged the most innings of any returnee with 50.0 in 10 games (nine starts), but he was saddled with a 6.12 ERA to go with his 4-3 record. The Big Red are looking for their first Ivy League title since They also claimed conference crowns in 1939, 40, 52, 72 and 77 as members of the Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League which included the eight Ivy League schools as well as Army and Navy. Cornell was sent to the Chapel Hill Regional in 2012, losing to North Carolina (7-4) and East Carolina (10-6). In 1977, their only other trip to the NCAA Championship, the Big Red won the first two games at the Northeast Regional against St. John s (10-7) and Connecticut (9-7), before being knocked out with back-toback losses to Temple (9-6) and St. John s (11-9). VS. THE IVY LEAGUE The Aggies are 13-1 all-time against members of the Ivy League, including 10-0 since Texas A&M owns series advantages over Brown (3-0), Columbia (1-0), Dartmouth (4-0) and Yale (4-0). The Aggies are 1-1 against Cornell with the loss coming in The Maroon and White have yet to face Harvard, Penn and Princeton. 3 RELATIVELY SPEAKING CAM BLAKE - father, Cody Blake, lettered on the Texas A&M Men s Basketball squad. MASON COLE - father, Curt Cole, was a three-year letterwinner as a tight end at Texas Tech. He was selected by the Denver Gold in the 1984 USFL Territorial Draft and spent time on the Green Bay Packers roster. HUNTER COLEMAN - father, David Coleman, is the head coach at Midland College. He served two stints as an assistant coach at Texas A&M, including as a volunteer assistant in the mid-1990s and as a full-time assistant on Mark Johnson s staff from He earned his master s degree in education administration from Texas A&M in MASON CORBETT - father, Sherman Corbett, played at Texas A&M, was drafted in the third round by the California Angels and played three years in the Major Leagues. Father is currently assistant athletic director at UTSA where he served as head coach of the Roadrunners for 12 years. ZACH DELOACH - grandfather, Charles Dickey McGaughey, is a member of the Kilgore College Athletic Hall of Fame and was a quarterback two years at Stephen F. Austin. JOHN DOXAKIS - father, John Doxakis, is the Southwest Regional Director for Dr. Tom Throwing Doctor House s National Pitching Association. WILL FRIZZELL - father, Gregg Frizzell, was a four-year basketball letterwinner at Southwest Texas (now Texas State) where he averaged 4.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game in 107 games. MICHAEL HELMAN - cousins, Jeff and Joel Mackovicka both played college football at the University of Nebraska with Joel going on to a four-year NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals. AUSTIN HENDRIX - brother, Ryan Hendrix, was a three-year letterwinner for the Aggies. He was 6-4 with five saves, a 3.66 ERA and 69 strikeouts as a sophomore in 2015 and added five more saves in Drafted by the Cincinnati Reds he reached Class A-Advanced last season. GEORGE JANCA - brother, Sam Janca, pitched for Texas Tech in 2007 and Ended his collegiate career at Angelo State. CHANDLER JOZWIAK - brother, Cullen Jozwiak, played for Blinn College and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. STEPHEN KOLEK - brother, Tyler Kolek, was the second overall pick of the 2014 MLB Draft, taken by the Miami Marlins with their first-round selection. JASON RUFFCORN - father, Scott Ruffcorn, was a three-year letterwinner at Baylor, logging a career record of 20-7 with a 3.23 ERA and 184 strikeouts in IP from He pitched five seasons in the Major Leagues, including one year with the Philadelphia Phillies and four years with the Chicago White Sox. BAINE SCHOENVOGEL - uncle, Chad Schoenvogel, played baseball at Blinn College and was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the second round of the MLB Draft. CASON SHERROD - grandfather, Horace Bud Sherrod, played football at the University of Tennessee and was Most Valuable Player of the 1951 Cotton Bowl Classic as a defensive end, helping lead UT to a win over the Texas Longhorns. He spent one season in the NFL, playing for the New York Giants in He is a member of the University of Tennessee Athletic Hall of Fame. BRADEN SHEWMAKE - father, Shane Shewmake, has been head coach at UT Dallas since the 2002 season, earning American Southwest Conference East Coach of the Year recognition in 2004 and COLE TAYLOR - father, Terry Taylor, played baseball at Texas A&M ( ) and minor league baseball with the California Angels system. AARON WALTERS - sister, Ashley Walters, is a senior on the Texas A&M softball team, earning NFCA All-South Region First Team in 2017, as well as All-SEC First Team and NFCA All-Region Second Team in LOCAL BOYS LANDON MINER and KYLE RICHARDSON continue a long line of local products to play for the Aggies. Miner was a four-year letterwinner at Bryan High School. He logged 21 career prep wins with 305 strikeouts in innings. The 305 career strikeouts set the school record. He was a four-time all-district honoree. As a senior he went 8-5 with a 1.72 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 77.0 innings to earn All-Brazos Valley First Team, All-Greater Houston and All-District 18-5A First Team. Richardson was a two-time all-district pitcher and 2014 All-State Second Team pitcher at College Station High School. He racked up a career record of 25-4 in his first three seasons for the Cougars, not pitching in his senior year. He batted over.300 in three of his four years, including a.459 average in He tossed three no-hitters and one perfect game as a prep. Other recent players to hail from Bryan or College Station include Blake Kopetsky ( ), Krey Bratsen ( ), Luke Anders ( ), Nick Anders (2009), Kyle Nicholson ( ) and Keith Stein ( ). LOCK DOWN BULLPEN The Aggie bullpen has been stellar early in the season. Through four games, the relief corps has worked 16.1 scoreless innings, allowing just three runs, one earned, for a 0.55 ERA. The relievers have scattered 11 hits with 22 strikeouts and one walk to post a.180 opponent batting average and 0.73 WHIP. JOHN DOXAKIS highlighted the bullpen s effort thus far with his 6.0-inning win. The sophomore southpaw allowed just two hits and fanned eight in his half dozen blank frames against Rhode Island. One of the keys to solid bullpen work is retiring the first batter you face. In 10 relief appearances, A&M bullpen has retired the first batter they faced in nine of 10 occasions. The relief corps has stranded three of four inherited runners. SETTING THE TABLE Aggies leading off an inning own a.606 on-base percentage and.536 batting average, hitting 15-for-28 with four walks and one hit batsman. The tally includes five doubles, two triples and one home run. Key catalysts include HUNTER COLEMAN (2-for-2, 1 double), ZACH DeLOACH (6-for-7, 1 one double, two triples, one home run, one walk) and LOGAN FOSTER (2-for-3, one double, one walk). STELLAR IN TRAFFIC Aggie pitchers have worked well with runners on base. The Maroon & White staff is holding opponents to a.192 batting average (10-for-52) with runners on base with 18 strikeouts and just four extra-base hits. JOHN DOXAKIS has struck out four of the seven batters he s faced runners on base and hasn t yielded a hit. STEPHEN KOLEK has faced 10 batters with runners on base and has yielded just one hit and one sac bunt while striking out three. FRESHMAN STARTERS ON OPENING WEEKEND CHANDLER JOZWIAK joined Tyler Ivey (2016) and Barret Loux (2008) as recent freshmen to toe the rubber the opening weekend of the season for the Aggies. Ivey earned a win against Hofstra in his start, scattering two hits and one walk while striking out seven on 76 pitches in 6.0 innings in a Sunday outing. POSTSEASON STREAK CONTINUES INTO 2018 Prior to the arrival of head coach ROB CHILDRESS, Texas A&M had never appeared in the NCAA Tournament more than four consecutive years. Last season s College World Series run extended the Aggies current string to 11 consecutive years, something that had never happened before in the program s 115 year history. Previously, the Aggies put together two strings of four consecutive NCAA Championship appearances. Former head coach Tom Chandler led his squad to the NCAA Regionals each season from 1975 to 1978 and 11 years later the Aggies enjoyed a similar four-year run from under the direction of head coach Mark Johnson. CLOSING NOTES The Aggies return 15 of their 16 saves from last season, but seven return to the starting rotation with MITCHELL KILKENNY. The bullpen is anchored by CASON SHERROD with four saves and KAYLOR CHAFIN who recorded all three of his saves in the Aggies NCAA Championship run to the College World Series. LANDON MINER and Tristen Bayless account for the two other saves. IRON MAN As a freshman, BRADEN SHEWMAKE was the only Aggie to start all 64 games in The Aggies had three other players appear in all 64 games in 2017, including NICK CHORUBY, AUSTIN HOMAN and GEORGE JANCA. SEC ALL-TIME LEADER IN WINS The Aggies own the most wins of any SEC program with 2,659 victories, which ranks 12th nationally. Texas A&M is currently one of just 25 NCAA Division I programs to reach the 2,500-win plateau, entering play with a 2,659-1, mark. On May 1, 2016, the Aggies became the first SEC team to reach the 2,600-win mark with a 6-2 win at Arkansas. 6 HEAD COACH ROB CHILDRESS One of the top pitching coaches and recruiters in the country, Rob Childress enters his 13th season as the head coach of the Texas A&M baseball program. With a steady stream of success, Childress has led A&M to a school-record 11 consecutive NCAA Championship appearances, six NCAA Regional titles, two conference regular-season crowns, four league tournament titles and College World Series appearances in 2011 and He owns a career record of , trailing only Mark Johnson (876) and Tom Chandler (660) in coaching victories at Texas A&M. Over the last three seasons, Texas A&M has amassed a record (.725). The.725 winning percentage over the three seasons ranks sixth among Division I programs. The Maroon & White are one of just seven teams to rack up 40 or more wins in each of the last three seasons. The Aggies are also one of just six teams to claim a regional title in each of the last three seasons. Last season, the Aggies made a College World Series appearance, finishing with a mark. The pitching in 2017 was brilliant, ranking in the Top 25 in the nation in ERA (20th 3.48) and WHIP (23rd 1.26). The staff was led by All-American Brigham Hill and standout reliever Kaylor Chafin. The 2016 Aggies earned their first-ever SEC Tournament crown with a 12-5 victory over No. 1 Florida in the championship game. Texas A&M finished the season with a record, including a four-week stretch in which the Maroon and White won 10 of 14 games against squads ranked in the Top 10. The Aggies finished third in the SEC with a record and captured their eighth NCAA Regional trophy. The magical campaign included Kyle Simonds complete-game no-hitter against Vanderbilt, a top 10 squad. The 2015 squad started the season with an SEC-record 24-game win streak en route to a campaign, the highest victory tally for the Aggies since The Maroon and White finished third in the SEC with an league ledger and won their seventh NCAA Regional title. The Aggies came up one run shy of the College World Series, dropping game three of a Super Regional against TCU, 5-4, in 16 innings. The 2015 campaign was one of the best coaching performances Childress has put in, as his pitching staff posted a 3.04 ERA (22nd in the nation) despite losing two weekend starters for most of the season. Matt Kent and Grayson Long, who both posted 9-1 records on the year, went on to get drafted, along with A.J. Minter, who went 2-0 with a 0.43 ERA in four starts before succumbing to a season-ending injury. The Aggies had four different players earn All-America honors on the year, including Grayson Long, Logan Taylor, Nick Banks and Blake Allemand. In 2014, Childress guided the Aggies through their second season in the Southeastern Conference, securing a spot in the SEC Tournament for the second consecutive year and earning a bid to a school-record eighth consecutive NCAA Championship. In Texas A&M s first run through the SEC in 2013, Childress led A&M to the final six of the SEC Tournament and a seventh straight NCAA Championship.
