7 Panthers 2007 Softball Preview Panthers look to build on 2006 s Performance with Upperclassmen Leadership and a Talented Recruiting Class. Featuring five seniors, two juniors, four sophomores, and eleven freshmen the Panthers are looking to better last years record (a best for fast-pitch softball). Last years team was one to remember boasting seven GSAC All-Conference honorees. Headed by GSAC Player of the Year Jessica DeMooney & GSAC Freshman of the Year Amanda Daniel, even coach Jennifer Claybrook got in on the act, earning the GSAC Coach of the Year award. The squad also included four members who would go on to make the GSAC academic All-Conference team (Stephanie Basset, Hayley Hanson, Dicie Holland, and Dawn Smith) and two members of the NFCA All- Region team (Jessica DeMooney and Kim oodard, made the NFCA second and third team teams, respectively). Ranked nationally in seven categories: second in overall ERA with a.98 figure, sixth in scoring, averaging almost nine runs per game, twentyforth in successful double plays, and in the top fifty in regards to both winning percentage and doubles per game there is no doubting that last year s team proved deserving of all accolades. ith all that said none of it matters any more, not when this years team is slated to face-off with seven regionally ranked teams (two ranked nationally). Leadership will not be the problem, not when this team returns five seniors- two of whom made the GSAC All- Conference first team. Dawn Smith, the vocal front-woman of the crew brings unmatched dedication and drive, a true leader by example. Hayley Hanson, undisputedly the best reliever on the staff, lives in the clutch by almost always coming through in tough spotssome say she s at her best when the bases are full and she has to get the job done. Dicie Holland will rely on her chemistry with the lady panther hurlers while heading up the catching duties, Dicie proved to be valuable last season and figures to be even more-so this go around. hen it comes to statistical production Kellee Scandrett and Kim oodard have lead the team for the last three years, they push themselves and their teammates every time they hit the field on our team. Lending support to the senior class is an extremely talented group of juniors and newcomer Kelly Lewis. She possesses superior speed, enthusiasm and leadership to the lineup. Though Lewis is a transfer, her speed and quickness with definitely be a threat in our lineup and will make an immediate impact The sophomore class got off to an auspicious start as freshmen (three of four were named to the All- Freshmen team). Megan Henry anchored our pitching staff last year, posting 14 wins with an incredible ERA of She is one of our leaders and is most definitely a go to pitcher, as well. Led by Ace pitcher Amanda Daniel who led the team with a.82 ERA (ranked ninth in the nation). hile battling with a lingering shoulder injury Amanda Jones made her way to a.392 on-base percentage, while splitting time as an infielder and an outfielder. Chole Turnipseed busted on the scene with a.336 batting average and a.415 on-base percentage. Kristi Underwood put up a.331 batting average while spending most of her reps as a designated hitter. The Freshman class, is full of talent. From a couple of LaGrange natives, Jennifer Knight and Holly Hazelwood, to an out of state newcomer, Valeree illiams (Jupiter, Fla), to players from the state of Georgia, Kayla Yeargin, Daphne Holtzclaw, Katie Hearn, Leah Flowers, Emily Foster, Meagan Hammond, Brittany Seltrecht, and Haleigh Kellar. They are all competing for a starting role and will all play a vital part in our success this season. The talent is definitely here. The Coaching is Here. So what can stop us, you ask? That s simple, only the panthers seem to have what it takes to slow the panthers down, but as long as they keep their nails sharpened the opposition is well served by shaking in their metaphorical boots.

8 A Year In Review: 2006 Recap Finishing with an impressive record, ranking sixth in scoring and second in ERA, this was certainly a year to remember. Head coach Jennifer Claybrook enjoyed her finest season at the helm rewarded with her second GSAC Coach of the Year Award. ith the emergence of a new ace in the form of the promising young freshman Amanda Daniel and a new breed of young sluggers lead by Chloe Turnipseed and Kristi Underwood your LaGrange College Panthers have a lot to look forward to. At the same time we also have to say fare-well to a true legend. Finishing third in the GSAC with a 12-2 record, the panthers more than held their own when it come to conference play. Even-more, with a 15-4 home record, escaping LaGrange with a win has proved to be quite a feat. The road to a final overall record was paved by a total team effort. ith nine players batting.300 or better, seven batters driving in 20 or more runs, and 11 players accounting for 10 or more hits this was a team saturated in talent, and coaching second to none. As evidence take notice to these honors: Seven players made all conference; head coach Jennifer Claybrook was awarded coach of the year; Amanda David was awarded Freshman of the year; and the omnipresent Jessica DeMooney, was awarded player of the year for the conference for the third year in a row. Even with all these honors abound things are not all smiles and sunshines for your panthers. The exit of DeMooney leaves a gargantuan hole in the line-up. DeMooney, who ranks in the top five alltime rankings of every major offensive category(also ranking 7th, 20th, and 49th nationally in runs per game, batting average, and triples per game respectively), takes with her one of he few traditions in this young programs history- DeMooney dominance (Jessica's sister Jennifer was a dominant figure from 97-00). It's up to returning seniors Kelly Scandrett (.353 lifetime batting average) and Kim oodard (77 runs batted in lifetime) to pick up the slack and buy time while the supporting cast comes along. Even with such a lofty hole missing, the team and its future is in good hands. ith freshman Amanda Daniel pulling her best Francisco Liriano impression- 14 wins in 21 starts with a.82 ERA- and freshman phenoms Chole Turnipseed and Kristi Underwood performing equally well on the field and at the plate your panthers are sure to be near the top of the conference for years, starting with this one. The school has posted a GSAC Player and Freshman of the Year recipients for the second time in the short history of the sport. Four players were voted Academic All-GSAC along with two others voted on the NFCA All-Region Team. In addition to its scoring and ERA ranks, the Panthers were ranked 20th in batting average, 24th in double plays and ranked in the top 50 in win/loss percentage. The.744 winning percentage is the best in school history; the 32 wins are the most since making the jump to NCAA division III. After two straight winning seasons, both improving on total wins, it's up to this cast to keep the winning ways going. ith a coach of the year and five returning all conference players nothing less should be expected.

15 LaGrange Softball History Celebrating 10 years of Fastpitch The softball program at LaGrange College competed for the first time as a varsity sport in It was slowpitch, and enjoyed some fantastic seasons, including its national championship run in It was an NAIA affiliate, but had the vision of becoming a NCAA Division III member, which started the first talk of changing the sport to fastpitch, which it currently is today. The current head coach, Jennifer (DeMooney) Claybrook has been with the program since the inception of the sport in the fall of The first season was in the spring of 1997 with only Dana Camp, Laura Bullard, Paula Davis, and Beth inter with existing fastpitch experience. The Panthers, led by head coach Larry Thompson, posted an amazing record and a berth into the NAIA post-season in the first season of the sport! It also earned its first-ever fast pitch GACC Conference Championship and posting a top 25 NAIA national ranking. In the inaugural 1997 Season the young lady panthers made their presence felt putting up a record, featuring a 32 game winning pitcher in Paula Davis and a true slugger in Miki Deal (5 home runs overall; two in one game). The following year, coach Kelly Britsky, a former LC player and a member of the 1994 National Championship team as an assistant coach, was left with six players as the school started its transition into NCAA Division III. The program endured some hardships playing against scholarship schools, but performed above expectations. The 1998 season, brought the Panthers into a transitional period, with an overall record of The bright side of this year was the emergence of Jennifer DeMooney, who left the program as the school's leader in various all-time offensive records was a year of reemergence for the Panthers, with the lead of Jennifer Brown and Jennifer DeMooney and an excellent surrounding cast, the Panthers peaked above.500 once again with a record, topping all expectations of all their critics. It would be the final season for Kelly Britsky as head softball coach, as Shelly hitaker would come in as the third head coach in four years for the young program. The 2000 season was marked by a decline in wins, but a steady move in the right direction modeling the student-athlete. The Panthers finished third in the nation with a overall GPA of They did good on the field as well, ranking themselves second in the conference in batting average. Two players; DeMooney and Kelly ren, were both named First-Team All-GACC. The awards didn t stop there as DeMooney earned First-Team All-Region while ren was named Freshman of the Year in the conference. In addition to their awards on the field, the Panthers had 10 players who were named Academic All-GACC including four who were named NAIA/NFCA Academic All-America (DeMooney, Samantha Henderson, Crystal Kersey and Beth inter). In 2001, the Panthers captured its first-ever Great South Athletic Conference

16 Championship. Four players were named All-GSAC (Kersey, Sabrina Pace, Shannon Phillips and Liana Thorton) while six others were named to the GSAC All-Freshman team. Shannon Phillips emerged as the top freshman in the GSAC, in addition to earning All- Freshman and All- GSAC honors, she was also voted NAIA second-team All-Region. Phillips would emerge into one of the program s best players with her instant offense at the plate and solid play in the field. She would be named Third-Team All-America third baseman the following year as a sophomore. The team did well in the classroom as well, ranking themselves 15th in the nation once again in team overall GPA. The 2003 season featured five USCAA All- Americans (along with three honorable mentions and two academic All-Americans), 10 GSAC All- Conference award winners, and nine GSAC All- Freshmen award winners. It was also a year of transistion, as Jennifer DeMooney Claybrook was named head coach. She has been with the program as both a player and as an assistant coach prior to becoming head coach of the Panthers and would bring the program back to the prominence it enjoyed in the 1990 s. Led by the bat of Jessica DeMooney (six home runs) and the arm of Kelly ren (1.45 ERA; 11 wins in 20 starts) this may have been the most productive team in the short history of the program with an impressive record, ending with Claybrook being named GSAC Coach of the Year in her first season. In 2004 the fast pitch program packed their schedule full of regionally and nationally teams finishing just three games under.500 (21-24 overall). Though the season was a disapointment the Panthers were still a very talented team; with USCAA All-American and GSAC Player of the Year Jessica DeMooney and fellow USCAA All-American Kim oodard in particular. In 2005, on the lead of Kellee Scandrett (.398 Batting average and three home runs), Jessica DeMooney (.398 Batting average along with accounting for 35 runs), and Pitcher Farrah McCullough (11 wins; 1.66 ERA) the Panthersboasting both four USCAA All-Americans and GSAC All-Conference awardees- rolled into the GSAC tournament finishing as runner-up with a record, a five-win improvement from last season. The 2006 Panther squad had it s best season since coming to NCAA divsion III. It s 32 wins were the most since the transition along with the program s best-ever.744 winning percentage, eclipsing the old record set in Seven players were named All-GSAC, including Jessica DeMooney, who was named GSAC Player of the Year along with Amanda Daniel, who was named Freshman of the Year in the GSAC. DeMooney and Kim oodard were voted to the NFCA All- Region Team. The Panthers consistently play a very competitive softball schedule in and out of their conference. They are allowed to play 40 games in the spring and one competition date in the fall. LaGrange College is a member of the Great South Athletic Conference (GSAC). The GSAC is made up of seven member schools in which all schools compete for the softball conference title. The seven teams are able to compete for the conference title and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
