As a head coach, Smith s overall record is , becoming only the second Gamecock softball coach with over 200 career wins. From , Smith has guided the Gamecocks to five-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, three times making the regional championship round. The team s offense has posted some of its strongest seasons during Smith s tenure, setting 25 team program records in her seven years at the helm. In the per-game team records, Smith s group holds eight of the 16 tracked. Gamecock pitching has improved markedly during that same tenure. From , Smith s staff improved its strikeout-to-walk ratio in each season, while the 2016 group posted the program s lowest earned-run average (2.82) since Many Gamecocks have broken out with their hard work under the watchful eye of Smith and her coaching staff. 3 Two SEC Tournament Championships 28 NFCA All-Americans 90 ALl-Region Nods THE GAMECOCKS Carolina comes into the 2018 season looking to build upon a season in which the Gamecocks reached the regional final for the third time under the direction of head coach Beverly Smith. The Gamecocks welcome seven freshmen and transfer Dixie Raley to the program this season to bring the Gamecocks to 20 active members. Head coach Beverly Smith has been California Dreamin with her roster, as South Carolina has six Californians on the team, more than any other state combined. The next closest is a tie with three between Georgia and South Carolina. Carolina won t be lacking arms this season with five available coming into the new season, leaving 15 fielders. THE UPCOMING WEEK The Gamecocks closed out a six-game road trip to open the season on Wednesday as they defeated the 49ers in Charlotte, 5-2. Following the victory, Carolina returns home for the first time this season when it hosts the Gamecock Invitational. The Gamecocks welcome Michigan State, Southern Illinois, Georgetown and Mercer to Columbia this weekend for the tournament. Carolina s opponents for the weekend come into the tournament with a 9-9 record as of Thursday. A LOOK BACK... THE 2018 OPENING WEEKEND The 2018 season opened with a successful trip to Miami, Fla. for the Felsberg Invitational where the Gamecocks finished 4-1 with wins over ECU, Hofstra and St. John s. No other team in the tournament finished with more than three wins. The Gamecocks started the tournament last Friday, outscoring ECU and Hofstra 7-2 on the day as Cayla Drotar pitched a complete-game shutout against the Pirates. For the tournament, the Gamecocks outscored their opponents 25-8, and pitched two complete-game shutouts thanks to Drotar s efforts in the circle. South Carolina s lone loss came at the hands of FIU and star pitcher Shannon Saile. Saile finished the weekend with 40 strikeouts while allowing just 17 runners on base with a 0.95 ERA. GAMECOCKS NOT AFRAID OF A GOOD TEST The 2017 schedule was one of the toughest compiled to date by head coach Beverly Smith, and 2018 is expected to be the same. In 2017, Carolina faced 12 teams represented in the final National Fastpitch Coaches Association/USA Today Poll, including national runner-up Florida. The 2018 schedule features eight games against teams that reached the WCWS last season, including three against the Gators. The Gamecocks will travel to seven different states throughout the course of the season, including: Florida, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Texas, Kentucky and Missouri. SAYING GOODBYE TO A SUCCESSFUL SENIOR CLASS The 2018 season opens with the Gamecocks looking to replace the successful senior class of Victoria Williams, Kaylea Snaer, Taylor Williams, Macey Web, Nickie Blue and Jessica Elliott. In the circle, Blue took with her the South Carolina saves record and ended up in the top five in NCAA Division 1 history in career saves. In the field, Snaer earned Carolina s career record for walks and finished in the top 15 in 14 different categories total. Williams capped off a successful career in 2017 as she was named to the 2017 Academic All-America Division 1 Softball Third Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. 4 20 NCAA Tournament Bids Eight Women s College World Series Appearances MATT LISLES FEATURE South Carolina assistant softball coach Matt Lisle has made a name for himself as one of the top hitting coaches in the country. Lisle has specialized in helping softball and baseball players with their swing, ranging from high school age student-athletes to Major League Baseball players, and his following on social media has made him somewhat of a rock star in the field. My career has been interesting because I have about 500,000 followers (on social media), Lisle said. About four years ago, I thought social media would be a good vehicle to share my coaching philosophies. The demographics I resonate the most with are coaches, parents and players, so I thought I could start sharing things I think are valuable to them. For whatever reason, it just took off. I started getting Major League Baseball players to call me, and I got some job offers. It s amazing the reach social media can have. Lisle is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Gamecocks after serving as the head coach at Menlo College in California. His background includes stints as a college head softball coach and assistant coach, college baseball assistant coach, and high school baseball head coach. Wherever he s been, it s his knowledge of hitting that has made a difference for each team. I dug into hitting, and I learned from some really good coaches on hitting, Lisle said. That sparked my passion. The deeper in the rabbit hole I got, the more I loved it. Lisle noted that he plans to use his success on social media to help in recruiting and marketing the South Carolina program. It s a great way to show what we do here, Lisle said. Not just what I do as a hitting coach, but our culture and values in the program here at South Carolina. Now recruits can really see what it s like here. I try to share a lot of hitting and coaching tips. That leads to Lisle checking social media notifications on his phone a couple hundred times per day. It s all business, and it s not like I m sharing cat memes on Instagram, Lisle chuckled. Everything I do on there has a purpose. *Full Story on gamecocksonline.com REPLACING ELLIOTT AND BLUE IN THE CIRCLE Arguably the biggest task coming into the new season for the Gamecocks will be replacing Nickie Blue and Jesssica Elliott. The two combined for 26 of the teams 34 wins and 75% of all innings pitched for the Gamecocks. Cayla Drotar has stepped up early on, having thrown two-complete game shutouts through three starts. The Gamecocks welcome three new pitchers this season, including transfer Dixie Raley who joins the program from Georgia Southern. Freshmen Kelsey Oh and Victoria Galvan round out the staff. Oh joins Carolina after a highly-successful high school career in which the Verona, N.J. native was twice named the New Jersey Gatorade Softball Player of the (2015 & 2016). RUNS! RUNS! RUNS! PLENTY OF OFFENSE RETURNING While the circle will be filled with plenty of new faces, the plate will feature four of Carolina s top five batting averages from last season (Mackenzie Boesel,.341; Tiara Duffy,.319; Kyrstan White,.291 and Alyssa VanDerveer,.286). Out of those five, the Gamecocks bring back a combined 186 hits (44% of overall), 24 home runs (31%), 123 RBIs (52%) and 101 runs (38%). Boesel led the way at the plate for the Gamecocks in 2017, as the sophomore finished with team bests in nine different offense categories. On the season, Carolina has outscored opponents through six games after outscoring teams (55 runs) last season. THE FRESHMEN... WELCOME TO DIVISION 1 SOFTBALL! South Carolina s roster features eight freshmen (seven true, one redshirt). This is a special class, head coach Beverly Smith said on signing day. I assure you this class will be impactful both on and off the field. Alex Fulmer, a utility player, was a two-time South Carolina Coaches Association of Women s Sports All-State AA team member. Jana Johns, an infielder, earned second-team American Family Insurance All-USA honors in after hitting.520 with seven homers and 28 doubles. BETTER LOOK INTO BOESEL Mackenzie Boesel couldn t have asked for a much better freshman year, as she was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team and garnered thirdteam National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Southeast Region accolades at second. In 2017, led the team in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, home runs, RBI, hits and runs. She was the first Gamecock freshman in program history to lead the team in batting average, homers and RBI. Was the sixth Gamecock ever to tally double-digit home runs in a single season and the first freshman as she finished with 10 overall. Just six games into the 2018 season, Boesel leads the team in batting average (.389), hits (seven), doubles (three) and total bases (13). BETTER LOOK INTO MAGUIRE Kenzi Maguire comes into 2018 looking to bounce back from a tough season in which her year was cut short to just nine games at the hands of injury. In 2017, notably posted a single in the seventh-inning rally that handed head coach Beverly Smith her 200th win in the triumph on Feb. 12. Started nine games at shortstop last season. Thus far in 2018, she is the only Gamecock to have reached base in every game through six contests. She has a team-best.524 on-base percentage and leads the team with six runs scored Gamecock Softball - Page 4

At Penn State, started all but two games in her career, and ranked fifth in home runs all-time (24). Was notbably named the Big 10 Player and freshman of the week on April 6 in SOFTBALL BONDS WITH LOCAL TEAM Just to hit the ball, and touch em all, a moment in the sun. John Fogerty sang those words in his 1985 classic song Centerfield, and it represents the ageless joy of playing ball. South Carolina softball student-athletes have been helping to share that joy with a local team made up of children and adults with special needs each Thursday this fall. The team was all for it, said South Carolina senior catcher Jordyn Augustus. We were just so excited for the opportunity to give back to the community in a way that involved our sport. We do community service at Harvest Hope Food Bank and Transitions and help out at other places throughout the year, but this was something that was directly related to our sport. We just thought it would be really cool to teach them what we know. Being a student-athlete is really about using the foundation we ve been given to impact our community. The Irmo/Chapin Recreation Commission s Therapeutic baseball team for children and adults with special needs, known as the Cardinals, have partnered with area high school baseball and softball teams over the last three years. We reached out to the softball team and asked for them to come out for one night, and they said no, let s do the whole season, said Jordan O Keefe, Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator for the Irmo/ Chapin Recreation Commission. They adopted our players as their buddies for the season. They have secret handshakes. They want to take them trick or treating. It s just really special. They originally asked us to come for one night, but we wanted to establish a relationship with these kids, Augustus added. We wanted to show that we cared, and that we re interested in our community. We felt it would be better to create that relationship with the kids and the adults, so we wanted to come once per week. The Cardinals consist of 37 special needs athletes, with one group playing early in the evening made up youngsters ranging from elementary school to 15 years old, and the older group ranging from 16 to 30 years old playing afterwards. The Gamecocks along with community volunteers have been meeting at Seven Oaks Park in nearby Irmo, S.C. *Full story on gamecocksonline.com 2018 Gamecock Softball - Page 5

Carolina adds hitting coach Matt Lisle to the staff in Lisle joins the Gamecocks as one of the most respected hitting coaches in the country. Volunteer assistant Matt Stewart joined the Gamecocks last season after servinng three years on staff at Florida. Stewart was a manager for both of the Gators national title wins. ROAD WARRIORS In 2017, South Carolina won a game in each of its four SEC trips, the first time since 2001 it accomplished that feat. (@ Arkansas, Georgia, Auburn and Kentucky in 2001). The five road wins was the most for a Beverly Smith team since 2013 when the Gamecocks took six SEC road games. Last season marked the first time Carolina has won games at three different ranked SEC foes. The 2017 win in Knoxville ended a 16-game, 15-year losing streak. The Gamecocks now own at least one SEC road series win in each of the last five seasons. CAROLINA RUNS THE STATE Under the direction of head coach Beverly Smith, Carolina owns a 48-7 mark against other Palmetto State schools. That mark includes a 31-game winning streak that stretched over five seasons before Coastal snapped the incredible streak last season on April 11. South Carolina played was 10-1 last season against in-state opponents, posting a stellar.352 batting average. Mackenzie Boesel feasted on in-state teams, batting an incredible.455 on the year. Tiara Duffy showed off against Palmetto State opponents last season with a.500 batting average to help lead the Gamecocks to 10 wins Gamecock Softball - Page 7 MaxPreps High School All-Americans Mackenzie Boesel...Overall 2nd Team 2016 Hayley Copeland...Overall 2nd Team Sophomore 2012 Cayla Drotar... This year s field includes Michigan State, Georgetown, Mercer and Southern Illinois alongside the Gamecocks. Action begins with three total tournament games on Friday. Winning the Gamecock Invitational has become the norm for Carolina, as the program owns an impressive 16-0 mark over the past four seasons in the tournament. The Carolina pitching staff has shined in the tournament over the past four years. In the 16 games during that span, Gamecock staffs have allowed three or more runs just five times. On the flip side, seven game have finished as shutouts for the Gamecocks. The Gamecocks hold a commanding 12-2 lead all-time in the games against the opponents coming to Columbia for this weekend s tournament. Carolina s lone two losses to the field have come at the hands of Michigan State. GOING BACK TO FLORIDA... TO FLORIDA The Gamecocks are no stranger to the state of Florida, having played there countless times over the years, but surprisingly this will be the team s first trip back to the state since the 2016 season. In 2016, Carolina went 5-3 in the state with wins over USF (three), Virginia Tech and Illinois State. Outside of the 15-3 season opening loss to Michigan in 2016, Carolina allowed just six runs in all other contests. Carolina is in the state of Florida since the 2013 season, having played there every year during that span except last season. SPEAKING OF FLORIDA... CAROLINA WILL BE THERE A LOT The state of Florida will have to get used to seeing the Gamecocks in action live this year, as Carolina is set to play at least 13 games in the state this year. After the season opening tournament in Miami, the Gamecocks return just two short weeks later for the D9 Citrus Classic in Orlando. Carolina is set to play Louisville, Bradley, Miami (Oh), South Alabama and Lehigh. The Gamecocks final regular season trip of 2018 will be to face the Florida Gators in Gainseville. The Gamecocks will only play more games in the state of South Carolina than Florida in ANOTHER ONE (HOME TOURNAMENT) Home of warm weather and a great destination for teams to visit, Carolina will host not one but two tournaments this season. This will be the fourth-straight season the Gamecocks have hosted the Carolina Classic and Gamecock Invitational in the same season. South Carolina posted an impressive 9-0 record last season in tournament games in Columbia. Every team in both fields this season are new based off last season s brackets. ON THIS DAY IN GAMECOCK HISTORY... FEB. 17 On this day in Gamecock history, the Gamecocks defeated North Carolina, 9-1, in five innings of work in In front of a paid crowd announced at 1,232, South Carolina moved to 4-1 on the season sparked by a six-run fourth inning with seniors Lauren Masters and Ansley Ard driving in runs, while freshman Kenzi Maguire drove in one as well. Carolina standout pitcher Jessica Elliott, then a junior, moved to 3-0 on the season as she allowed just one run in her four innings of work. She allowed just four walks and one hit in the outstanding performance for the home team. The home-opening win was one of 23 that season for the Gamecocks, who went on to finish the year at Gamecock Softball - Page 8

9 Two SEC Tournament Championships 28 NFCA All-Americans 90 ALl-Region Nods COMEBACK GAMECOCKS... CAN T COUNT THEM OUT South Carolina proved all throughout 2017 you can t count them out until the final out is recorded as the Gamecocks posted 13 come from behind victorics last season. In addition to those victories, Carolina posted five more in walk-off fashion, twice in extra innings. This trend isn t new, though, as the Gamecocks won seven games entering the seventh either tied or training two years ago. All of last season s last at-bat wins can be seen in the chart to your left on the previous page. SOME FANS TALK IT... CAROLINA FANS WALK IT Gamecock Nation made its presence felt once again last year, filling up South Carolina s home venues in record numbers. For the eight sports in which the Gamecocks compete that the NCAA keeps attendance statistics, South Carolina ranked in the top 25 nationally in seven of those sports for average attendance - the most of any school in the country. The Gamecocks ranked 11th in the country in softball attendance, and was one of nine SEC schools in the top 16 after averaging 1,398 per game. Our fans are the greatest, Athletics Director Ray Tanner said. at the time this was released in July. It doesn t matter the sport or the venue, Gamecock fans get loud in supporting our teams. I hear from our student-athletes how much they appreciate it. Seven of our teams ranked in the Top 25, and four were in the Top 10 in average attendance last year. That says so much about how super our fans are. Overall, South Carolina had eight sports ranked in the top 50 nationally for attendance. The Gamecocks led the nation in women s basketball for the third straight year, ranked third in women s soccer, fifth in baseball, eighth in men s soccer, 11th in softball, 17th in football, 21st in men s basketball, and 41st in volleyball. NOT A BAD FINISH AT ALL South Carolina earned its first ranking in the final poll of a season under head coach Beverly Smith in 2017 as the team finished tied for 25th in the NFCA/USA Today poll. The Gamecocks took 32 votes in the poll, tying fellow SEC member Georgia. Of the 26 teams in the final rankings, South Carolina played 12 of them, including national runner-up Florida. The Gamecocks were last ranked in a postseason poll after the 2007 season, which was the last time Carolina advanced into a super regional. WELCOME TO THE HALL OF FAME! Tricia Popowski ( ) had a knack for making things happen on the softball diamond. Recently inducted into the University of South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame, Popowski still ranks fourth in school history with 279 career hits, including an NCAA record 51 triples, and she was the second-hardest Carolina player to strike out in school history with just one strikeout every 23.7 at-bats. Popowski was a part of South Carolina s 1989 Women s College World Series team, and has many fond memories of her years in the Garnet and Black. She earned her undergraduate and master s degrees from South Carolina, and played softball after college for five different national teams, including the legendary Stratford Brakettes. Tricia Popowski became the fourth softball player in program history to be named to the hall of fame, joining Trinity Johnson ( ), Darlene Lowery ( ) and Megan Matthews ( ). BOESEL REFLECTS ON FIRST YEAR It s not unprecedented for a freshman to make an immediate impact on the softball diamond. However, when a rookie takes on a leadership role as an everyday player while leading the team in nearly every offensive category, as was the case with South Carolina second baseman Mackenzie Boesel, coaches and fans have to be excited about the future. I always have high expectations for myself to perform well, Boesel said. I definitely exceeded my expectations, especially in the home run department. I m not typically a home run hitter, but I always expect to perform well and help out my team. I think her transition to Division I softball was really smooth, said head coach Beverly Smith. She was a kid that I knew had really good bat control. When I was recruiting her, she was always a tough out. I knew she would be an everyday player for us. Initially, I thought she would be a good hitter near the bottom of the lineup because she would be a bat-for-average kid. What surprised me the most was the power. Boesel was one of three Gamecocks to start every game of the season, and she more than held her own by leading the team in nearly every offensive category, including the triple crown of batting average (.341), home runs (10), and RBI (41) while helping South Carolina reach the NCAA Tournament for the fifth-straight year, and 20th time overall. That s great, and it surprised me, Boesel said. I m just glad I was able to contribute to my team anyway I can. I really didn t pay attention to the numbers during the season. It is good to know that my hard work paid off in the end. She gets up there and swings hard, Smith said. I think the strength and conditioning program really helped. I think she is someone who will continue to hit for a good average and get on base, and the power numbers will come with having great at bats. Her 10 home runs and.441 on-base percentage were freshman records for South Carolina, and she posted the fifth-best batting average, sixth-most runs, fifthmost hits, and second-most RBI by a Gamecock rookie. *Full story on gamecocksonline.com 2018 Gamecock Softball - Page 9
