TAYLOR BREAKS SCHOOL HITS RECORD, BIG 12 STOLEN BASE RECORD Senior Rhea Taylor has rewritten the record books again week, as she set a new school record for hits in a career and broke the Big 12 s career stolen base mark. Taylor picked up three hits in a doubleheader against Drake, moving her within two of tying Mary Babb s 14 year old record of 262. Over the weekend, Taylor moved ahead of Babb with six hits in four games. The record-breaking hit came in her final at-bat against SLU, as she roped a triple to right-center field to put herself on top of the record book once again. She also went 5-for-5 in stolen bases at the tournament last weekend, tying her for the most stolen bases in Big 12 history. She broke Texas A&M s Sharonda McDonald mark of 153 stolen bases, who set the record in 2007, with a stolen base in the first inning against Arkansas on Wednesday. Here s a look at what records she s tracking down this season: -Batting Average: Already the all-time leader at Mizzou with a.420 career batting average, a record that is theoretically impossible for give relinquish before the end of the season (Jenna Marston is second all-time at.359, two others are tied for third all-time at.352), Taylor should also graduate as the Big 12 Conference s record holder as well. She currently holds that mark, ahead of former Husker Ali Viola, who hit.409 from

3 2011 MISSOURI SOFTBALL 3 -Hits: Taylor is now tied for sixth all-time amongst Big 12 hitters with 266 hits. If she matches her three season average of 82 hits a year, she would find herself tied with Norrelle Dickson of Oklahoma, the conference s all-time hits leader at Runs: Entering the season as Missouri all-time runs leader and eighth in the conference, Taylor is expected to flirt with the Big 12 s all-time record as well. Dickson, who played for OU from and also holds the league s hits record, is the current record holder at 234. Taylor scored twice against Arkansas, giving her 199 for her career and bumping her up to a tie for fourth all-time in the Big 12. If she matches her yearly average of 61 runs, she ll find herself ahead of Dickson with 244 career runs scored. EARLEYWINE ONE SHY OF 200 TIGER WINS With Missouri s nine straight wins, head coach Ehren Earleywine is just one win away from his 200th win as Tiger head coach. Already the second winningest coach in Tiger history behind Jay Miller ( in 15 seasons), Earleywine has the second highest winning percentage for a Missouri head coach at.748, behind Miller and ahead of Barb Wright, who went (.740) in two seasons for the Tigers. Entering the season with a career winning percentage of.734, Earleywine is the 14th winningest active coach in NCAA Division I softball. THOMAS SWEEPS NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARDS Redshirt sophomore Chelsea Thomas has been named the Division I National of the Week by both the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and USA Softball, as announced Tuesday. Thomas was also tabbed as the Big 12 s Pitcher of the Week, announced by the league office. Thomas had a phenomenal week for the Tigers in the circle, winning all three of her starts to improve her record to 3-2 on the season. On Wednesday, she threw the first perfect game for Missouri since 2002 and the first seven inning perfect game since 1991, as she set down 21 straight Drake batters, setting down 11 via strikeout, in Mizzou s 5-0 win. On Friday, Thomas threw a three hit, complete game shutout against SEMO as she walked only one batter and struck out 10 in the victory. She took a no hitter into the sixth inning before giving up a leadoff single. She threw her second perfect game of the week on Sunday against Missouri State, tossing all six innings in Missouri s 11-0 run-rule victory over the Bears. She set a new seven inning school record with 15 strikeouts. Over the course of the week, Thomas struck out 36 batters and walked only one while opponents hit just.048 against her. She now has six no hitters in her career (four no hitters, two perfect games), the most by any lone Tiger player in school history. On the season, Thomas has a miniscule earned run average of 0.60, as she s tossed three complete game shutouts this year. In 35.0 innings pitched she s allowed just 12 hits, three earned runs, and has limited opposing hitters to a.103 batting average. She has 57 strikeouts to just five walks and is averaging strikeouts per seven innings. Thomas is the second Missouri Tiger to be named NFCA National of the Week. Mary Babb won the award on May 4, She is the third USA Softball of the Week from Mizzou, as Janessa Roening won it on May 3, 2005 while Ashley Fleming took home the honors last season. Her Big 12 honor is the third of her career, as she was named Pitcher of the Week in both 2009 and THOMAS PERFECTION PUTS HER ON TOP After not having a perfect game since 2002 or a seven inning perfect game since 1991, Chelsea Thomas threw two this past week, as she set Drake down in order on Wednesday s 5-0 win, before another game of perfection against Missouri State on Sunday, striking out 15 of the 18 batters she faced in the six inning affair. With that, Thomas now has more no hitters than anyone in program history with six (four no hitters, two perfect games). Karen Snelgrove, a former Olympian for Canada, had five no hitters in her career, four of those being perfect games which is tops in school history. TIGERS CRUISE PAST ARKANSAS, 12-0 The No. 14 Missouri softball team belted out 12 runs on 8 hits, backing another dominating performance by redshirt sophomore Chelsea Thomas while run-ruling Arkansas by a 12-0 score in five innings. Thomas (4-2) won her fourth straight game on another outstanding showing, as she struck out 10 batters in four innings while allowing two hits zero walks. She set down the last eight batters she saw on strikeouts. Her ERA is down to 0.54, and she s averaging over 12 strikeouts per seven innings. HEAD COACH EHREN EARLEYWINE Fifth at MU Mizzou: (.748) Overall: (.736) 2007 Big 12 Coach of the Year In just four seasons, Tiger Head Coach Ehren Earleywine has led the Missouri softball program to almost unheard of levels of success in such a short amount of time. In his first season, he took a team that posted just 26 wins and had a losing record the year before and turned them into a 40-win squad that finished the year with a regional bid and a top-20 national ranking. After 2007, Earleywine led the program to an even higher level of success on the national stage, as his Missouri squads have captured back-toback-to-back regional championships, a Big 12 title, the first two 50-win seasons in Missouri history and two consecutive Women s College World Series appearances, making him the first Tiger coach ever to earn back-to-back berths to the pinnacle of college softball. Batting averages, ERA s and fielding percentages have all improved dramatically, while Tiger players are earning national recognition on a now annual basis. Missouri s top-ranked softball squad has Earleywine to credit for its rise to national prominence. As successful as the 2009 campaign was, somehow the 2010 Missouri softball season topped it. While that may not have been a surprise when you looked at the team going into the season, Mizzou definitely shocked plenty of people after what happened in the middle of the season. At the end of March, Missouri was flying high, sitting at No. 3 in the country and considered a legitimate contender to win the Women s College World Series. However, word then broke of a season-ending injury to ace pitcher Chelsea Thomas, and suddenly Missouri became an afterthought. What people seemed to forget, however, is that this was an Ehren Earleywine coached team, and they wouldn t be allowed to roll over and die without a fight. After a brief adjustment period in early April, the Tigers finally got it all together. They ended the season with 51 wins, breaking the school record mark of 50 set the previous year. They hosted the regional round for the second straight year, where they used a seventh inning comeback over Creighton and two straight wins over Illinois to capture their third consecutive regional championship. Then, Missouri played host to the NCAA Super Regional round for the first time in school history, sweeping the Oregon Ducks in two games to move on to their second straight and fifth overall Women s College World Series. Missouri had their fourth All-American awarded under Earleywine, and finished the year ranked No. 8, tying for the highest end of the year ranking in program history. For their work, Earleywine and his staff were selected as the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Midwest Staff of the Year for the second consecutive season. In just four years, the 2007 Big 12 Coach of the Year, became the first Missouri softball coach to lead his squad to back-to-backto-back NCAA Regional titles, doing so in 2008 and again at home in Columbia, Mo., in 2009 and Since taking the reins, Missouri s batting averages have been on the rise, which includes a.313 mark in 2009, while the team ERA has been on the decline, highlighted by 2009 s 1.47 mark, the Tiger s best end of the year ERA since Just as many of Earleywine s squads have, the 2010 team shattered numerous Missouri records. Along with the 51 wins, Mizzou also set new team records for runs (381), runs batted in (342), and walks (247) With Earleywine at the helm, the Tigers have stolen a total of 494 bases and managed an 82 percent success rate on stolen bags since In addition to the success Missouri has seen on the field, Earleywine s squad has received record marks in the classroom, finishing the 2008 campaign with a combined 3.36 grade-point average, the highest GPA since the creation of the program in Prior to his career at Missouri, Earleywine spent five seasons at Georgia Tech, of which he served as head coach for the final three. Earleywine s teams made five consecutive appearances in the NCAA Regional Tournament, finishing runner-up on three occasions. The Ramblin Wreck claimed Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) regular season and tournament titles in 2005 and to his credit, Earleywine was named the 2005 ACC Coach of the Year.

4 2011 MISSOURI SOFTBALL 4 Senior Rhea Taylor stole second base in the first inning to become the Big 12 s new all-time stolen base leader. Taylor, now with 154 career bases, broke Sharonda McDonald of Texas A&M s record back in Junior Ashley Fleming led the team offensively, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs, a home run and five driven in. She s tied for the team lead with three home runs on the year and leads all Tigers with 16 RBI. HOME COOKIN Playing at University Field has been a major advantage for the Tigers since head coach Ehren Earleywine took over in In 107 games played at home under Earleywine, the Tigers have won 90 of them for an.841 winning percentage on their home field. Of their 17 losses, 13 of them came in two combined seasons. In Earleywine s first year the Tigers went 17-7 at home, and in 2009 they went In 2008, Mizzou finished 22-1 at home while last year they went So far this year the Tigers are 3-0. Ashley Fleming hit.545 with a home run and a triple, while Rhea Taylor, Jenna Marston and Maddison Ruggeberg each hit over.400. Marston and Ruggeberg also blasted their second home runs of the season. THOMAS THROWS PERFECT GAME, TIGERS SWEEP DRAKE Redshirt sophomore Chelsea Thomas tossed a perfect game and junior Kristin Nottelmann won her fourth game of the season as the Tigers swept Drake in a doubleheader on Wednesday by scores of 5-0 and 8-1. Thomas threw the first perfect game for Missouri since Feb. 17, 2002, and first seven inning perfect game for the Tigers since April 26, She struck out 11 of the 21 batters she faced and threw only 77 pitches as she won her first game of the year. The perfect game was the fifth no hitter of her career, tying her for the school record for most individual no hitters in a career. Tied at 0-0 in the fourth, senior Rhea Taylor broke the scoreless affair with her second home run of the season as she blasted a grand slam over the right-center field wall to make it 4-0 Tigers. Singles by Maddison Ruggeberg and Abby Vock put a pair of runners on for Missouri, and a walk to Mackenzie Sykes set up Taylor s blast, which came on a 1-1 count. Taylor singled in the first inning to extend her hitting streak to 12 games. The streak was snapped in game two, tying her for the sixth longest streak in program history. Nicole Hudson hit a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the fifth to extend the Tiger lead to 5-0. The blast was her third of the season. Taylor, Ruggeberg and Abby Vock all had two hits apiece for Missouri. Nottelmann won her fourth game of the year with a complete game, as she allowed only four hits and one run while striking out seven. s Played 15 Batting Average Runs/ Hits/ Doubles Triples Home Runs Runs Batted In Walks SBs-Attempts ERA Strikeouts/ Walks/ Opp. Batting Avg Statistical Comparison (86.1%) Offense Pitching (84.6%) (79.2%) Drake jumped ahead in the first on an RBI double by Erin Mollohan, driving in Amy Pierce who walked and stole second with one out. Taylor led off the inning with a perfectly placed bunt right in front of the plate, and stole her second base of the game. With one out, Fleming worked a full count and fouled off a few pitches before pulling one into right field, plating Taylor and trimming the deficit to 2-1. The score remained tied at 2-1 into the sixth inning, when Whitney Larsen pulled a solo home run over the left field fence to make it 3-1 in Alabama s favor. Dunne retired the last 10 batters she faced as she improved to 7-0 on the season. 6 2011 MISSOURI SOFTBALL 6 allowing the three runs on six hits. She struck out nine and didn t walk a single batter. Missouri 4, South Florida 1 Junior Kristin Nottelmann threw a gem, going all seven innings while allowing just one run on only three hits and striking out eight. After allowing a one out single in the second, Nottelmann set down 16 straight before allowing back-to-back two out hits in the bottom of the second. Mizzou broke the scoreless tie with an unearned run in the top of the third, as backto-back two out fielding errors helped the Tigers put a run across. Taylor s bunt was fielded by the third baseman, but the throw was dropped by the covering second baseman at first base, allowing her to advance to second. Lee followed with a grounder of her own to third, who then threw the ball over the first baseman s head, bringing Taylor around to score and moving Lee to second. The Tigers tallied another in the following inning to extend the lead to 2-0. Fleming led off the inning with a double in the right-center field gap, her second of the season. After stealing third, senior Marla Schweisberger singled back up the middle to plate Fleming. Taylor made it 4-0 Mizzou with her first home run of the season, connecting on a 1-2 pitch over the right-center field fence, plating Abby Vock who was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Missouri 6, Western Michigan 1 Missouri put up a three-spot in the first inning to take the early lead, highlighted by Hudson two-run double. Rhea Taylor and Jenna Marston each walked to start the game, and they moved up a base on a ground out to set up Hudson s two-bagger. After stealing third, Hudson was plated on a groundout by Lindsey Muller to make it 3-0. A sacrifice fly by Muller in the bottom of the third increased Mizzou s lead to 4-1. In the bottom of the fourth, Mackenzie Sykes picked up her first career collegiate hit, run, home run and RBI as she crushed the 1-2 pitch over the left field wall, making it a 5-1 Tiger lead. Missouri added an unearned run in the fifth to increase their lead to 6-1. Ashley Fleming tossed the last two innings, setting down all six she faced while striking out two. Muller got the win, her first of the year, throwing two innings of relief while allowing no runs on two hits with two strikeouts. The Tigers will face off against Texas on Sunday, May 8 at Noon, also on ESPN. Missouri was televised six times last season - twice during the regular season and four times in the postseason - and went 2-4 in those games. Both wins came against Oregon at University Field in the NCAA Super Regionals. TIGERS GO 1-2 AT RAIN-SOAKED SAN DIEGO CLASSIC I The No. 8/10 Missouri softball team stumbled out of the gate to start their 2011 season, as they went 1-2 at the San Diego Classic I from Feb Originally scheduled to play five games, Mizzou only got three of their games in. Missouri opened up against San Diego State on a last-second addition to the schedule on Thursday evening, just hours after they got off the plane. Despite the strange travel schedule, the Tigers came out swinging as they won 9-1 over No. 22 San Diego State, run-ruling the Aztecs in five innings in their season opener. Junior Kristin Nottelmann got the win, throwing all five innings while allowing just one run on four hits. Offensively, the Tigers got home runs from junior Ashley Fleming and sophomores Nicole Hudson and Jenna Marston. Marston finished 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI, while Fleming went 2-for-3 with two runs and two batted in. The Tigers got things going on Friday against Fresno State, and it looked like it was going to be a repeat performance for the Missouri offense as they picked up three straight extra base hits to start the game, taking the early 2-0 lead. However, Fresno State blasted three home runs and the Tiger offense never got back on track, as they fell 6-3. Missouri took on No. 15 Cal right after that, with redshirt sophomore Chelsea Thomas making her first start since late March last season. A huge storm rolled in to the area, and the game was postponed in the top of the sixth inning with Cal up to bat with a runner on second and no one out. The game wouldn t be resumed until Sunday morning. Upon continuation, Thomas started with a 1-2 count on the Cal batter.who ended up reaching on a dropped third strike, giving Cal runners on first and third with no one out. After a stolen base, a ground out to second put the first run on the board with the Bears taking a 1-0 lead. Thomas struck out the next two batters to strand the runner at third. Mizzou had a chance to even things up in the bottom half but stranded runners on the corners. Abby Vock led off the frame with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Rhea Taylor. Vock moved to third after a ground out, with Ashley Fleming following with a walk. Sophomore Nicole Hudson lifted one deep to left field, but the ball was caught at the track for the final out of the inning. Thomas went all seven innings in the loss, allowing the one unearned run while striking out 11 and giving up only three hits. FAMILIAR FACES After taking essentially two completely different teams to the Women s College World Series in 2009 and 2010, the Tigers return a bit of continuity in Of their 22 players on the roster, 17 were on the squad last season.
