KSI participants volunteer at the Food Bank of Delaware in Milford (above), as well as being enriched by art classes at a local studio. KSI is actively seeking communitybased sites as destinations and even program delivery bases for its participants. It s part of the organization s efforts to progressively move away from dependence on Skill Development Center services and create opportunities to expand challenges for personal growth. And we re calling upon community nonprofits and businesses to help us identify ongoing opportunities for individuals with disabilities to work and learn. The CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) Final Rule to move all services for people with disabilities out of facility-based programs and into community-integrated settings is scheduled for full implementation in March All agencies providing rehabilitation services must comply by that time. And KSI is moving positively to build upon its existing strengths in community-based employment and inclusion opportunities to be fully compliant with the CMS directives. This creates an opportunity for community resources, businesses and nonprofits to look creatively at their operations and see where people with disabilities can work, volunteer or be enriched in the process. A Message from KSI s CEO B. Craig Crouch It is hard to believe that 2015 has ended and 2016 has begun. I hope you enjoy this Annual Report issue of KSI News for Fiscal Year It was a very challenging and exciting year at KSI. The organization earned its 14th consecutive three-year Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) accreditation. We would love to partner with you. We are excited about 2016 and the opportunities that lie ahead. KSI Cartridge Service s New Prices, New Products KSI Cartridge Service customers are finding new low prices and additional products to help them save even more than ever before. Due to contract renegotiations with parts suppliers, KSI was able to drastically cut prices on many of its most popular remanufactured toner cartridge models, which has been a tremendous financial benefit to existing and new customers looking to save on their office imaging supplies. In addition to lowered prices on KSI Cartridge Service remanufactured products, the department is also carrying New Compatible toner cartridges for the first time. New Compatible cartridges are manufactured with all new components, but are priced just a little more than the remanufactured versions. The products provide an affordable alternative for customers wanting original manufacturers products but at a fraction of the cost. As always, when you purchase any KSI Cartridge Service product, it helps to support KSI s employment and community-inclusion programs to help Delawarean s with disabilities reach their highest potential. To learn more about KSI Cartridge Service s new prices and products, contact Barb Thibodeau at Ext. 3126; thibodeaub@ksiinc.org.

3 KSI s Director of Community Relations Alicia Hollis recently joined 10 other Delmarva community service heroes as recipient of the Jefferson Award. And on Thursday, December 10, 2015, Ms. Hollis was honored by KSI and WBOC-TV during a special ceremony at KSI s Milford Skill Development Center. During the special announcement, WBOC-TV personality Chris Weimer and cameraperson Lisa Moy interviewed and recorded Ms. Hollis explaining her activities both at KSI and in the community, the production from which will air repeatedly during the week of February 21, Ms. Hollis is known for her caring and compassionate dedication through the years to not only KSI and the people it serves, but to many community and civic organizations, as well as her family members in need. She is currently an active Board of Directors member with the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Milford, and has been very active with the Milford Lions Club in the past. She regularly supports American Cancer Society s Relay for Life as well as the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, wishing to share her experience as a breast cancer survivor to encourage others. Alicia has also been known to support local students with their needs. I ve known Alicia for quite a while. And whenever I see her, she s always looking to help someone and never wants to be recognized, says Angela Davis, a KSI coworker and nominator of Ms. Hollis for the Jefferson Award. She s very giving, always supporting fundraisers. She s even helped students buy prom gowns and prom tickets. A lot of people don t know that. The Jefferson Awards were established in 1972 by Jacqueline Onassis, U.S. Sen. Robert Raft, Jr.; and Sam Beard, who founded the American Institute for Public Service. The public foundation started the Jefferson Awards as a Nobel Prize for public and community service. On the local level, Jefferson Award recipients are considered ordinary people who do extraordinary things without expecting recognition or reward. The awards are intended to inspire others to public and community service, as well as training individuals to actively make an impact in schools, communities, workplaces and elsewhere. To date, The Jefferson Awards Foundation has recognized more than 55,000 local individuals and hundreds of prominent national figures who have amplified solutions for others to apply in their own communities. With more than 148 Media Partners in 93 communities, the Jefferson Awards help the American Institute for Public Service recognize the unsung heroes contributing outstanding public service. WBOC-TV is Delmarva s local partner and helps promote nominees and awardees for their personal community commitment. Alicia Hollis is invited to attend the Jefferson Awards dinner in March of 2016, and is eligible for consideration as Fiscal Year 2015 Annual Report I 3 KSI s Alicia Hollis Receives Jefferson Award Above, KSI CEO, B. Take a look at what your company or organization does. If you re a business, are there repetitive tasks that need to be done on a regular basis for which you need personnel, part-time or full-time? If you re a nonprofit, are there ongoing opportunities for individuals to volunteer? Or does your organization have regularlyscheduled programs, like Tai Chi, Laugh Yoga, art classes, knitting or other activities, that could enrich the lives of people with disabilities when they participate? If you answered yes to any of the questions above, we encourage you to contact KSI s Mark Reeve as soon as possible, Ext. 3019; reevem@ksiinc.org. She can help you find directions to solutions that will both benefit our program participants as well as your company or organization. Expand your sights, and enable KSI to expand its sites to help people Embrace Abilities!

KSI worker Arthur Bunting kneels front right. The 3rd Annual Friends of KSI Quarter Auction on October 16, 2015 was a huge success, and resulted in $4,535 in funds donated to support KSI programs. Held at the Milford Elks Lodge, the event drew a record attendance, nearly double the attendees from the previous year. Auction bidding, 50/50 sales, raffles and refreshments sales combined to provide the generous contribution from event organizer Angela Spishock and her volunteer committee. the Milford Elks lodge was full of Friends of KSI Quarter Auction players for an evening of great fun. The Friends of KSI Quarter Auction began in 2013 when Angela Spishock, sister of KSI Procter & Gamble Dover Wipes crew member Arthur Bunting, sought a special way to give back to the organization that helped her brother be productive. The event has steadily grown to include more participants, resulting in increased donations. This year s donation was an astounding 41% increase over last year s event, and provided muchneeded resources to help KSI deliver its programs to Delawarean s with disabilities. KSI thanks Mrs. Spishock and her energetic crew of volunteers for their continuing support and enthusiasm for KSI and its participants. KSI Board of Directors Chair Patricia Rodriguez addresses the luncheon crowd at Abbott s Grill. KSI honored the members of its Make A Difference Society of Endowment Fund contributors during a special Luncheon October 22, 2015 at Milford s Abbott s Grill. The Endowment Fund started in 1989 with $10,000, and has grown since then to $525,178. The investment of that fund has created a sustainable financial resource to help support KSI programs in the future. Named funds under the Endowment Fund include the Velma E. Steward Fund started in 2000, the Swierczewski Fund CEO, B. Craig Crouch welcomes new Society members Jayson and Margie Crouch. started in 2003, the Clifford T. 5 KSI CEO Goes Under the Razor for United Way Campaign KSI CEO, B. Craig Crouch vows to set the organization s United Way fundraising campaign goal much higher next year. Because this year the KSI staff and Board of Directors ran right past its top bar, raising $6, to support United Way s programs. And it cost Mr. Crouch his hair. KSI ran its annual campaign from October 7 to Oct 21, 2015, with a goal of reaching $5,500 in donations, an ambitious target that has not been approached in years. As a way of motivating staff to reach as close as possible to that goal, Mr. Crouch vowed to shave his head and beard if they met the amount, and promised to do so in front of staff and Board members if they reached $6,000 in United Way Mr. Crouch poses with KSI staff, Board members and United Way representatives who supported him. donations. The staff and Board members made payroll deductions and direct donation commitments, participated in a Penny War, planned bake sales and silent auctions, enjoyed casual dress days with donations, and more. Eventually the staff raised more than the $6,000 Mr. Crouch expected. So on November 4, 2015 in KSI s cafeteria, in front of staff, Board of Directors and United Way representatives, Mr. Crouch allowed KSI Board member Bettie Campbell to take a razor to his head. Completely clean shaven within a few minutes, KSI s CEO showed his honest dedication to his word and the work performed by United Way Delaware. As a United Way partner agency, KSI received $121,113 back in United Way support just last year, which is an important resource for sustaining KSI s programs. So it s important that the Fiscal Year 2015 Annual Report I 5 KSI Board member Bettie Campbell takes the razor to CEO, B. Craig Crouch, making good on his promises when staff exceeded their United Way goals. organization show its own support for United Way. If you d like to contribute to KSI through your own United Way campaign, designate your donation to benefit KSI, our Member Agency Number being KSI thanks the Board, staff and supporters of KSI for helping to make its United Way Campaign a success, and thanks Mr. Crouch for his truly personal investment in the effort. Boardwalk Buddy Walk Gets Support from KSI Once again, KSI participants and staff supported the annual Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk Buddy Walk with a donation and KSI s own Buddy Walk in October. KSI staff organized raffles, door prizes and bake sales that garnered more than $1,000 as a donation to the Boardwalk Buddy Walk. Staff members also generously donated prizes for raffles that ranged from homemade peach cobblers to $100 gift certificates to local restaurants. The fundraising efforts culminated with KSI s Buddy Walk, in which participants walked the perimeter of KSI s Skill Development Center with decorated props and music. Dennis and Sharonlee Diehl, organizers of the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk Buddy Walk, were on hand during KSI s event to participate and KSI Buddy Walk coordinator Rudee taylor poses with Rehoboth Beach organizers Sharonlee (left) and Dennis Diehl. receive the donation, which will in turn be distributed to local nonprofits supporting Delawareans with Down s Syndrome. Buddy Walk was started in 1995 by the National Down s Syndrome Society (NDSS) to raise awareness for the disease during Down s Syndrome Awareness Month in October. Starting with 17 walks 20 years ago, there were 250 Buddy Walk events held nationwide in Now in its 10th year, the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk Buddy Walk has steadily grown, raising more than $43,178 for Down s Syndrome program support during its Buddy Fest events the weekend of October 10, KSI itself has received more than $42,501 in donations back from Buddy Walk in the last few years. The Rehoboth Beach Buddy Walk was chosen by NDSS to be the 2016 Buddy Walk of the Year. KSI is grateful for the Buddy Walk and the funds it supplies to partnering agencies to help people with Down s Syndrome. And the organization is particularly appreciative of the Diehls support and participation in the betterment of KSI participants lives. 6 6 I KSI News KSI Fiscal Year 2015 Annual Report KSI CEO, B. Craig Crouch Fiscal Year 2015 has certainly presented its challenges, but also presented opportunities to move forward and better help the people with disabilities we serve go farther. Participant workers gained more than 108,586 hours of community-based employment through the organization. KSI transportation continues to be crucial for many of these opportunities, with fleet vans and busses providing more than 81,363 trips in FY15 at fuel costs of more than a quarter of a million dollars. In addition to community work crew transportation, some of those trips supported participants who volunteered more than 7,472 hours for community organizations. And others supported community-inclusion trips to many enriching experiences, such as Tai Chi and Laugh Yoga classes at a local senior center, art classes at a local business, library programs, and a variety of others. These community experiences helped open new worlds and solidify vital skills for our participants. Continued on Page 9.
