4 HORSIN AROUND Page 4 CHRISTMAS RIDE 2008 We really lucked out with the weather. John and I had been snowed in for four days and I was praying the Christmas Ride would go on to see it s Fortieth Anniversary. Our prayers were answered and the ride went on! We had (give or take) around 50 riders dressed in outstanding Christmas costumes. We enjoyed riding the trails, which were in great shape and we had warm weather to boot. YaHoo!! Paul Jacques did a fine job leading the ride and Kelli Land drag rode for us both doing a splendid job. We arrived at the lunch stop around 12:30 PM. There the judges had their hands full picking out the first and second place costume. Irene Scott won second place best costume, Paul Anderson won ugliest costume. Bert Bonnett won Oldest Rider age 98 years young! Antoinette s Star won the oldest horse, age 26. Star beat out my Magic who is 25 and Aleta s Dixie, age 24. Hats off to these grand old horses. The prizes were hand crafted by Karla Weber and Bill Pollard. Karla made beautiful stuffed ponies. Bill made wine corks with Buffalo Head nickels on them. John made certificates for the winners. After that we enjoyed hamburgers, potato salad, chips, salsa and Walt s famous brownies. Walt, Karla and Kris Menze worked the cook shack. Joseph Matamoros and John Richardson worked the beverage truck. Bill Pollard worked the poker hands. Patty Hug did the shopping for the food for me, for which I will be forever grateful. Back to the staging area, I called out to Bert to come up for a photo op. In a full out run, here came Bert on Beri s mule Ears. His hat blew off and Bert brought that mule to a stop. Then, Ears went into reverse as fast as he could run forward. Oh my!! Paul and I did some fancy side stepping to keep Ears from running away with Bert. Finally Bert s friend Dave rode Ears and he put Bert on his Foxtrotter mare. We arrived safely back at the staging area where Art Monde welcomed us back! Joseph won the poker hand! A special thanks to Art for starting the Christmas Ride forty years ago. Jodie Marholz Best Costume (1st Place) Irene Scott Best Costume (2nd Place) Aleta Bird

6 HORSIN AROUND Christmas Ride 2008 (Cont d) Page 6 Arthur Monde receives Certificate of Appreciation for FORTY years of hosting Corral 22 s Annual Christmas Ride. Tiffanie, Sharon, Art, Paul, Kathleen and Kelli gather to thank Art. THANKS ART! CHRISTMAS BARN PARTY This was Corral 22 s first Christmas Party in several years! Around 35 people turned out for this gala event. Our friends from Tehachapi couldn t make it due to the snow conditions. The weather was a little cold and breezy, however the party was a complete success! The food was incredible. Our Dutch oven cookers, Bill Pollard, Craig Tognazzini, Colleen Smeed and Kelli Land did a fabulous job! John Richardson deep fried two turkeys which turned out to perfection. Chuck DuBay made yummy apple cobbler in the BBQ. Joe Dohmen made delicious Baby Back Ribs. On top of all this, beautiful salads, potato dishes, beans, casseroles and a variety of desserts made for an outstanding delicious dinner. The ambience was superb. We dined in the barn which was decorated in colored lights and lighted wreaths. We had four heaters in there which helped a little. The western music was provided be John who put in a stereo system in the barn for the occasion. Back outside we sat by the fire and enjoyed the silent auction which turned into a not so silent auction. Not to worry, I refereed and made sure everything went smoothly. Well sort of! These ladies can get serious about the items they want. This party took a month in the planning. My wonderful neighbors helped out in the decorating. Craig and my neighbor Eric put up the lights. Craig, Joseph, Bill, Joe, Doran and Chuck brought tables and chairs. Susan Dubay and Irene helped decorate the tables. Antoinette helped on the auction. Chuck, TK, Colleen and Susan cleaned up along with Joseph and Irene. Everyone pitched in to lend a hand. Special thanks goes to Bob and Loretta Foreman who gave John and I the little fireplace that kept us warm outside. By the way did I tell you how lucky we were on the weather. The Perfect Storm has moved into Agua Dulce and we are snow bound! Along with the snow we are having horrendous winds which have crippled the whole area. There is no way we can even get off our property!! In fact we couldn t even drive our car back up to the house from the barn!

8 CHEESEBORO RIDE HORSIN AROUND Page 8 What a beautiful day for a ride at Cheeseboro! It was hard to believe that a week earlier so many people lost their homes to a firestorm. We had 18 reservations for the ride but ended up with 12 riders as I had one cancellation, 3 no shows and Bob and Aleta took the wrong trail to meet us! I had called the Ranger in advance so he and three volunteers were there to help with parking as this is a very popular park on the weekends for bicyclists. We left the parking lot on the Modelo Trail which is a single track trail that does some serious climbing up the ridge and then we rode the connector trail to the Palo Comdado Trail up the old fire road and turned onto the Sheep Corral Trail. At this point we encountered many bicycles and everyone was courteous so all of us could do our thing. We took the Sulphur Springs Trail back through a lovely shaded area. When we accessed this area Tiffanie s horse Stinky became lame so Tiffanie, Paul, Kat and Luis slowed up as we continued back to the parking lot. We were enjoying lunch at the picnic tables under the huge oak tree when they reappeared and Stinky was doing much better. Did you notice that I mentioned Luis? How terrific to see him riding again and he was able to ride three different horses - great to see him back in the saddle. One of our newer members, Susie Niebergall, came with her Midas who had never ridden in a large group - they had a blast and went home with all blue ribbons for the day! For those of you who have not ridden here in a couple of years there are a lot more trails for us to use. They opened up the Edison Fire road and at one point you can see Agoura, Calabasas, Simi Valley, Chatsworth and Westlake. It is now rideable from Victory Blvd to the Chumash Indian Museum in Westlake Village. Gusie What s NEW IN 22 New members, Mark and Ellen Morris purchased a SSH (Spotted Saddle Horse) mare named Easter. 12 TRAIL RIDE RULES AND REGULATIONS FROM ETI CORRAL 22 Page 12 These rules and regulations are meant to help make our pleasure rides safer and more enjoyable for everyone. These rules are modified, and have been expanded from an original set of rules drawn up by associate member Stan Houlberg. With the approval of our Executive Board we offer these rules as follows: 1. Stay on trail, between appointed lead (Trail Boss) and Drag Rider. Do not leave ride, or trail, without notifying one or the other. 2. Do not take short cuts. Trails can only be kept open and usable by their use, but short cuts help defeat this purpose. Heavy rains follow the ruts made by short cuts downhill and wash out the regular trail. 3. On the trail keep up the pace. Do not race or run your horse past other horses. Do not lag behind. 4. When passing another horse ask permission to do so or in some way notify riders ahead that you wish to pass. As horses pull over to the right to let you by, proceed at a walk or a jog trot. 5. On the trail maintain a reasonably safe distance between horses. When horses are crowded they will kick and or bite. When riding up or down hills and/or on narrow trails try to keep at least two horse lengths apart. If you tailgate and get kicked, it is your fault. 6. Horses may be hobbled or they should be tied by a halter and lead line short enough so that they cannot get down to roll and secure enough so that they cannot break away and cause trouble. Do not tie too close to another horse. Tie to a fixed object not apt to break or scare the horse if he pulls back. 7. Never, at any time, throw trash of any kind (cans, bottles, etc.) on the trail. All refuse must be carried out with you. 8. Never at any time smoke while riding. Smoke only at designated smoke stops called by the Trail Boss. Riders will not smoke when mounted and will make absolutely sure smokes are extinguished and buried when through. 9. At watering places avoid being criticized for bad manners or being inconsiderate of other riders by allowing your horse to jump in and muddy up the water. Crossing streams on the down-stream side will help avoid this. 10. Do not stop on narrow trails, especially ledge trails. Trail Boss will try not to stop unless it is safe for all riders. 11. At no time, regardless of ownership, will anyone be allowed to neglect or abuse his horse. As members of an organization such as Equestrian Trails Incorporated, that is dedicated to the horse, it benefits our attitudes and our conduct at all times to practice horsemanship in the most professional manner. As an adult trail riding Corral, we members of 22 and our guests will exemplify these high ideals. 12. When on the trail, if questions arise or problems present themselves, they should be brought before the Trail Boss or Drag Rider. Concerning the safety and comfort of everyone on the trail, these men are the ultimate authority and will have final say in all matters! 13. No dogs or stallions allowed on the trail. 14. Each member is responsible for the conduct of his guest. Offensive behavior will not be tolerated.
