4 The following directions are in several formats and arrangements. The GPS locations were taken from missouririvertrails.org. It is a terrific site and I thank them very much for this wonderful tool to map the route. It is up to you to read the routes and make a plan for your driving in consultation with your paddlers. Your first consideration should be which vehicle to drive. You want something you can handle easily on dark country roads but yet large enough to give you room to breathe, rearrange stuff and possibly sleep. The River Mileage is 340 from Kaw Point to St. Charles but you WILL be driving over 550 miles if you follow all along the way. You may prefer to drive directly checkpoint to checkpoint. Then again you may like seeing your paddler along the way at other sites that are less crowded and could also work as resupply stops. Before the race do yourself a favor and have some idea of where you will be driving. Get a MO State Map from I cut the map up and taped it together so it made a long map going across the entire state of MO. Then I traced the river in bright blue marker and highlighted all the checkpoints. Lastly I highlighted in a different color the extra viewing places available that we might choose to use. Visit again close to race day and check for detours along the MR 340 route. Every year there is at least one major detour somewhere along the route. If you use a GPS or Googlemaps.com on your phone take the time BEFORE the race and enter the coordinates and mark each spot If you deviate from the given route to go to a Wal-Mart or a McDonalds you have to be able to figure out how to get back on track to arrive at the location to which you were headed. I can t possibly list every driving direction that you may need or want. You have to have a map, a GPS, or availability to use googlemaps.com. Lastly, be sure to print out the directions that follow with a large enough font that a driver can read them while driving in strange territory. You can t expect these directions to do much good if they are printed in size 2 font. Every direction to a major checkpoint from another checkpoint is on its own page in large caps & GREEN print. Bind the directions, staple them or put them in a note book so they aren t flying loose in your vehicle. Every parking spot at every ramp or viewing spot is going to be needed. Please be considerate and only use parking spots for parking. Please do not use a parking spot for sitting in the shade of your vehicle, putting up a tent shade or other uses. Use parking spots only for parking a vehicle and find other bank space for tents & chairs. Many thanks! Don t get stressed out. There will be plenty of people around to help you if you just ask. Buddy up with someone whose paddler seems to be going the same speed as your paddler. 4

6 It will take your paddler 5 ½ plus hours to paddle from Kaw Point, the race start, to Lexington, MO, checkpoint #1. There are a lot of things to do along the way and a big variety of shopping. It is great fun to follow the paddlers along the way and cheer at locations other than checkpoints. By following your paddler it also helps get all the support teams spread out and not all landing at a checkpoint at the same time. It will only take the first paddlers of any start minutes to reach Riverfront Ramp East. If you plan to go there leave Kaw Point before the canon fires or you will miss them. I prefer seeing the paddler s fronts instead of their backs and they should be on the River in position long before the canon anyway giving you plenty of time to see them at Riverfront East. It is quite a site to see hundreds of boats coming down the Mighty MO! KAW POINT ( , ) N, W TO RIVERFRONT PARK ( , ) N, W RR RM MDC 6.7 MILES 15 MINUTESThis is a great place to see your paddler & to fix any problem that might have come up the first 5 miles of the race. Maybe they tipped at the start and lost all their water, maybe their rudder needs adjusting, you certainly don t want them to continue with a major problem like these or have to go back to Kaw Point to fix the problem, but you also don t want them stopping unless there is a real emergency that can be fixed. Suggested Route from Kaw Point to Riverfront Park: Turn left onto Fairfax Trafficway & get into the far left lane for 423 ft. Merge onto I-70 E/US-24 E via the ramp to St. Louis for 2.9 mi Stay in the left lane & take exit 2G on the left for I 29N/I 35 N/U. S. 71N 0.1 mi Merge onto I 29N/I 35 N/U. S. 71N for 0.7 mi get in right hand lane Take exit 4 for Front Street 0.2 mi Merge onto E Front St for 1.4 mi Slight left onto River Front Rd 0.5 mi Continue onto N Monroe Ave 463 ft Turn left onto River Front Park Destination will be in 0.3 mi 6

7 If leaving Kaw Point in time to get to Riverfront Park East and see the paddlers doesn t happen, that doesn t mean you can t join in the fun of seeing the paddlers at the next viewing location. The following are directions to go from Kaw Point directly to LeBenite Park. It will take your paddler over 1 hour to paddle to LeBenite so you have plenty of drive time. KAW POINT ( , ) N, W TO LEBENITE PARK ACCESS RAMP ( , ) N, W KAW POINT TO LEBENITE PARK ACCESS RAMP Via 210 hiway RR RM miles 27 minutes Not a checkpoint, great viewing point Head west on River City Dr toward Fairfax Trafficway 436 ft Turn left onto Fairfax Trafficway 0.2 miles Merge onto I 70 E/24 E via the ramp to St. Louis Entering Missouri 2.9 miles Take exit 2 G on the left for Interstate 29 N/Interstate 35 N/U. Osage replication and museum that is really neat & cheap. Take the first right after the one lane bridge. The museum is air conditioned & has rest rooms. Kids love playing in the old fort out back. There is no out house or clean water at the ramp. Parking is very limited at the ramp but there is plenty at the museum and you can walk down to the ramp from there. from LeBenite to Ft. Osage/Sibley Head south toward N Courtney Rd 0.5 mi Turn right onto N Courtney Rd 292 ft Turn left onto MO-291 S 2.9 mi Slight right onto the ramp to Lexington 0.2 mi Turn left onto US-24 E 16.7 mi Turn left to stay on N Buckner Tarsney Rd 9

The river access is at the east end of the town. There is a Corp of Engineers building and a ramp that is only open to the public on the MR 340 race day. If you are there any other day you will not have access to the ramp, building or their parking lot. On race day the people have always been really nice and let us use their rest rooms & get water. There is lots of shade in the park which by this time in the day is really welcome. It is a great place to restock your paddler and have them just wave at you at Lexington because the crowds will still be huge at this time in the race. 10

There is a huge parking lot, a table under a pavilion and running water. Waverly ran out of money before they could put in a bathroom. You might want to consider being here instead of the very congested usual ramp. I just found this out last year while visiting with a fisherman. If you need something from Casey s or to leave to go to the next stop just turn south on old bridge road and it winds around to 24 and a Casey s will be on your left. 12

13 LEXINGTON ( , ) N, W TO DOVER STATION , N, W DOVER STATION RR RM miles 21 min Nothing there, steep bank. This is certainly NOT a great location but it does work in a pinch. Once Pappy s water container leaked after Lexington and I was able to throw him a replacement at Dover Station. In 2012 it was an o k location to throw the team ice socks and watermelon to help combat the heat. You can go down the steep bank or if they will take the time there is a cove just right for them to pull into to get stuff. Super Center, 855 Cherokee Drive, Marshall, MO 65340, (660) The town s people of Miami are just simply great. However, several years ago some fishermen complained to the MO Conservation Department about not being able to use the ramp during the MR340. Therefore the Conservation agents have been out enforcing strict guidelines for NOT leaving a boat on the ramp for even a few minutes. They have orange cones set up everywhere and it really limits the number of vehicles that can be in the parking lot. The faithful that sell food do a good job and even have pancakes Wednesday morning. 15

28 FROM KATFISH KATY S 8825 Sarr Rd, Huntsdale TO HARTSBURG ACCESS ( , ) N, W RL RM Look carefully at the next few pages. There are MANY routes to get between Katfish Katy s and Jefferson City. BEWARE: YOU PROBABLY HAVE TO CHOOSE ONE. They are so close together you can t get to all of them while your paddler paddles from one to the other. Cooper s does have a small store that includes food & ice if you/your paddler so desire. There is very limited camping that Mike Cooper usually does not charge for during the M R 340. Hartsburg Access is just a ramp. It is a good choice if you/your paddler need something from Wal-Mart or food from McDonalds because you can easily go west on Broadway to Ashland s McDonalds or stop in Columbia and still make it to Hartsburg before your paddler. Choices to made either in the pre-race plan or on the fly. VIA RTE K 32.9 MI 56 MIN 38 42'28.90", '23.58" There are two choices for viewing and/or re-supplying between Katfish Katy s and Jefferson City/Noren.
