2 Safety first! Please take every precaution to follow all traffic and pedestrian laws. Also, the trails in this guide are only suggestions. Please use them with caution as only you know the limitations of your physical ability. Why a trails guide? Goals for this guide The Safety and Wellness Committee feel it is important to encourage staff to recognize the physical and mental benefits of taking a break during the work day. Taking a walk with fellow employees is a perfect way to do this. Not only can it increase wellness but it is an opportunity to build stronger relationships between Hopelink employees. 1. To identify a walking trail at participating Hopelink sites. 2. To identify walking leaders. Their role is to simply encourage others to take a walk. 3. To provide some tips and resources on walking and wellness. 2
3 How do I participate? It s Simple! Share trails you know! 1. Use this guide to look up a trail at a Hopelink site. If a site isn t listed, use the resources to map out a trail in your area (p. 11). 2. Take a break. 3. Take a walk. Did you know 15 minutes of walking = 3 squares of dark chocolate 1/2 banana A slice of bread 1/2 skinny latte 3
4 What is a Walking Leader? Look for the Walking Leader Badge Print it and post it to become a Walking Leader at your site! A walking leader is anybody that wants to increase their wellness by taking a break to take a walk while encouraging others to do the same. This role is voluntary, low commitment and does not require any meetings. Your duties as a walking leader is up to you. It can look like any of the following: invite a coworker to walk with you, introduce others that have an interest in walking or share any tips you may have on wellness. How do I become a Walking Leader? 1. Walking Leaders are self-identified so if you want to be one you can! 2. Let HR know. 3. Print & post a Walking Leader badge (p.10) *Ask if HR can post a list of walking leaders on intranet under Safety and Wellness tab. 4
