One of our major initiatives over the last year has been to grow the membership. Each year over the last three our turn over has been higher than the previous year. We checked with non renewing members and found that many were getting on in years and couldn t fish anymore, many were tied of the same events year after year and finally, we haven t done a good job indoctrinating new members into the club. We couldn t do anything about aging but we did listen and started to make some format changes in our tournaments like the Guys n Dolls and the 24 hours of Flagler, added another surf tournament and a beach party as a social mixer. Tournament participation is up and new members dot the monthly weigh sheet for the yearlong tournament. The new member clinic helps new members get acclimated and we will Technology impacts kayaking from the very craft we paddle, to the paddles, the seats kayakers sit in and a host of tools that enable kayakers and kayak anglers to paddle farther, faster, safer and even catch more fish along the way. Consider the materials high end kayaks are made of, carbon fiber and other high tech materials which yield tough light weight kayaks which transport handily and handle easily on the water. There are even ultra high end kayaks such as the one use by Olympic competitors. The folding Sprint Kayak made in France by Faltboot Nautiraid weights only about 27 pounds and can be folded into a back packable unit ready to haul into the back country. The frame of the kayak is made of aluminum with molded High Density Polyethylene. The surface of the boat consists of Nautilon boot with reinforced fabric. The boat skin closed after the construction with a waterproof zipper. Now this is not the kind of kayak we all might afford, but for the serious kayaker, this unit allows great access to distant waters and fishing. by: President Chuck Gleichmann by: Richard F. McCleery High Tech and Kayaking expand that some more next year. Membership has grown steadily to 190 member families as of the end of June through improved marketing and referrals from current members. We are also financially sound because of an extremely successful Bucket O Fun Tournament, good expense control and increased membership. Your dues actually only cover the bare essentials we offer our members. The income we receive from our two pay tournaments, 50/50 and raffles allow to us to fund our club tournaments, club picnic in October and the Holiday Party in December. There is still more to come! We should finally have tee shirts by next meeting and stickers for your boats and car the following month. The 24 Hours of Flagler in August, the beach party later that month, he 25 th annual Inshore Tournament in September and the club picnic, pier tournament and surf tournament in October. That s it for this month. Be safe out there! Kayak paddles come all sizes materials and shapes, and here too technology impacts this ancient propulsion tool. Some are of simple Canadian spruce shaped by high tech numerical routers and sanders to feathery shapes that with a few strokes propel us across the waters. Yet others fashioned from an array of esoteric plastics or carbon fiber materials look nothing so much like angular assemblages of different diameter tubes and paddles with grip surfaces covered in water shedding hand grips. Some of these paddles can leave your wallet $500 emptier too! Then there are kayak seats- oft over looked until you have to sit in one for several hours paddling when you cannot readily get out and stretch. You can pay as little as $50.00 for the standard fabric over minimum foam models but, as I can well attest, fanny fatigue sets in quickly with those babies. There are seats offering greater comfort all the way up to some that will set you back over $ These come made of the top of line foam padding, extra back support and all represent the best ergonomic design can bring.

2 Chuck Gleichmann President Chuck Radloff Vice President Tim Miller Treasure Scott Fehrenkamp Secretary Richard McCleery Corresponding Secretary Mike Brennan Sergeant at Arms Mike Vickers Weigh Master Jeff Fehrenkamp Quarter Master by: Captain Jim Britton With the dog days of summer approaching, I recommend anglers do the same thing many of us did when we were young, hit the beach! Whether in a boat, on the pier, or from the surf; fishing should be busy. From a boat the targets will be tarpon, sharks, and large jacks. All of these species can be found behind the shrimp boats as they dump their by-catch. When the shrimp boats are not active just run the beach looking for pogy pods (there will be plenty to choose from). Once a pod is spotted it will not take long to discover if there are fish underneath, so slowly approach and have live bait ready or use your favorite large artificial bait. Angler looking to get in on the action from the pier can also get shots at tarpon and sharks, in August. Pompano, flounder, bluefish, and drum will be found around the pier and from the surf as well. Offshore anglers will be targeting kingfish by trolling over wrecks and reefs. If the smokers are not around, drop an anchor to load up on black sea bass, snapper, and grouper. Further out dolphin and tuna will be found from 135 feet of water out to the ledge. The inshore bite will remain much the same. Get out early and target redfish along grass banks at higher tides and along oyster bars or sand bars at the lower tides. Trout can be found along the banks of the IWC and under docks. And don t forget to target flounder in creek mouths or bends on an outgoing tide. For yet another way to beat the heat give night fishing a try. Free line a shrimp under dock lights for trout or fish deeper for redfish and flounder. Hobe makes a kayak with a built in peddle paddling system that allows anglers hands free propulsion and position the better to fish and work the flowing tide. I have seen guys use these and when it comes to accuracy of positioning your yak for fishing, these are hard to beat. There also exist kayakers who have gone to some lengths installing electric trolling motors in their yaks the better to fish and travel distances with minimum efforts. This requires the right kind of kayak as well as considerable technical skills on the part of the angler who converts his craft. A new electric propulsion system designed for surf boards, the Wave Jet ( about-us.html) is waiting for some kayaker to recognize its potential and install it on their yak for better fishing. Are you out there in our readership? Further, there are kayakers who install fish finders on their craft; in this case the chap who installed the electric trolling motor on his yak also has a depth finder. Another way to use technology to find fish is the Smartcaster series by Humminbird. This little number fits on like a wrist watch and the transponder can be either cast at end of a rod or set to float in the desired area while tethered to the kayak. So, low tech, mid tech, high tech, no tech, kayak fishing can be a mix or match of all of these as your budget and interests allow.

6 This year the planning committee decided to try something new. On August 24 th we invite all club members to join us at the beach from 10:00 am 2:00 pm. The purpose of this event is to have one more opportunity to gather as a group and enjoy the camaraderie of the fishing club members. We did not create a budget for this event, hence it a bring your own event. If you would like to join us on this day we will be meeting just south of Gamble Rogers State Park on the public beach commonly referred to as the Flagler Bowl. If you have any questions about this event please contact Capt. Jim Britton at or saltytalesfishing@gmail.com Saturday July 14, 2012 the Flagler Sportfishing Club held its 3rd Annual Kids Fishing Clinic at Bings Landing. With a turnout of over 190 kids. It was our biggest clinic yet. Thanks to all of the volunteers (over 45 from our club) and the lager group from the Halifax Fishing Club. A larger number of the families in attendance came back after going through the clinic to tell me what a great thing the Club was doing for the Kids in Flagler. Again thanks for all the help and we should, as a club, do more of things like this. If you have some new ideals of things we can do, see me at the next meeting.
