For those of you who did not make the meeting, we were introduced to Deputy James Kaplan from the Flagler Sherriff s Office. Deputy Kaplan and his wife Emily are expecting their second son Tristan in the late June. Unfortunately, Tristan has been diagnosed with Hypo Plastic Left Heart Syndrome. In layman s terms the left side of his heart has not developed and he is headed for multiple surgeries within days of his birth stretching over many years. The surgery is so specialized that the closest hospital that performs this procedure is in Michigan. Yes, insurance covers most of it but it doesn t cover missed work time, transportation, room, board and the care of the rest of his family. The deputy came to our meeting to ask us to save our pop tops from our beverage cans for the Ronald McDonald House to help finance his family stays. Most people in the United States celebrate the 4th of July, but do you know exactly why the holiday is so important to our country? Imagine how you would feel if someone older than you (maybe an older sister or brother) kept telling you what to do all of the time and kept taking more and more of your allowance. That is how the colonists felt in the years leading up to Great Britain kept trying to make the colonists follow more rules and pay higher taxes. People started getting mad and began making plans to be able to make their own rules. They no longer wanted Great Britain to be able to tell them what to do, so they decided to tell Great Britain that they were becoming an independent country. (To be independent means to take care of yourself, making your own rules and providing for your own needs.) The Congress met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and they appointed a committee (a group of people working together to do a specific job) to write a formal document that would tell Great Britain that the Americans had decided to govern themselves. The committee asked Thomas Jefferson to write a draft (first try) of the document, so he worked for days, in absolute secret, until he had written a document that he thought said everything important that the committee had discussed. On June 28, 1776, the committee met to read Jefferson's "fair" copy (he put his best ideas together and wrote them neatly.) They revised (made some changes) by: President Chuck Gleichmann He left with a commitment from our club for our pop tops, the earning from our up coming fall tournament, almost $1000 in cash help from our members and a commitment from Florida Sportsman Magazine to support our fund raising efforts for the family. Chris Davy and Jim Britton are leading this effort and scrambling to get organized so please support them as much as your time allows. On a less serious but as important note please mark you calendars for our Kids Clinic at Bings Landing on July 14 th. Captain Mike expects 250 kids and their parents this year and we need at least 50 volunteers to pull this off. He has all the specifics and there will be a sign up sheet at the July meeting. Boat captains, as part of the clinic, Hank Alper needs at least 15 boats and crews to take Kids Clinic raffle winners fishing on July 28 th. Those details will be at the July meeting as well. Tight lines! the document and declared their independence on July 2, They officially adopted it (made it theirs) on July 4, That is why we call it "Independence Day." Congress ordered that all members must sign the Declaration of Independence and they all began signing the "official" copy on August 2, In January of the next year, Congress sent signed copies to all of the states. The Declaration of Independence is more than just a piece of paper. It is a symbol of our country's independence and commitment to certain ideas. A symbol is something that stands for something else. Most people can look at a certain little "swoosh" and know that it stands for "Nike." Well, the signers of the Declaration of Independence wanted the citizens of the United States to have a document that spelled out what was important to our leaders and citizens. They wanted us to be able to look at the Declaration of Independence and immediately think of the goals we should always be working for, and about the people who have fought so hard to make these ideas possible. The people who signed the Declaration risked being hanged for treason by the leaders in Great Britain. They had to be very brave to sign something that would be considered a crime! So every time we look at the Declaration of Independence, we should think about all of the effort and ideas that went into the document, and about the courage it took for these people to stand up for what they knew was right -- independence! Will return next month

Raybon Printed by Dolphin Printing by: Captain Jim Britton Even though we will have some brutal heat heading our way, a look back at last years fishing log makes me anxious for July to get here! For inshore fishing, this time of year, get out early and rig up several top water plugs. I usually have one walk-thedog (Zara Spook Jr.) style plug and one Chugger (Storm Chug Bug) ready to go. Redfish should go crazy for these plugs on the flats and fishing deeper areas should produce nice trout. These same plugs can also be used later in the day around bulkheads or docks for some fun Ladyfish and Jack Crevalle action. If you cannot get out early, try the same tactics around dusk for similar results or fish after dark for the busy Trout and Snook bite around dock lights. Offshore anglers will continue to find schools of Dolphin. Looking for the telltale signs (birds or weed lines) in 130 feet or deeper should be the keys to filling the fish box. Bonita and Black-Fin Tuna may also make their way into the trolling spread. Bottom fishing reports are looking promising also. Mangrove Snapper from 5 to 7 pounds are being pulled off of many different wrecks and reefs. The reefs will also hold the normal residents like Sea Bass, Trigger, Porgy, and Amberjack. For those looking to fish near shore July will be a great month to continue targeting Kingfish, Cobia, Tarpon, and Shark. Kingfish and Shark should also make their way within casting distance of the pier. Surf and pier fishermen will also be able to target Pompano, Flounder, Whiting and Bluefish. Lost tackle found at carwash. Give me a call, to describe contents and I will give it back. The Club held its 16th Annual Bucket Full O Fun Fishing Tournament on April 13/14 at Hurricane Patty's in Flagler Beach. The Tournament drew over 100 anglers and the Club awarded Thirty Six Hundred Dollars ($3,600.00) in prize money to the lucky winners. The silent auction and the raffle of some great prizes drew a great deal of interest and were a part of the fun that was had by all. Thanks to everyone who helped to make this our most successful Tournament.
5 Member Mike Hadden s son Chris is a combat medic in the US Army stationed at Ft. Belvoir. He has been catching Northern snakeheads since they went viral a couple of years ago. Caught on the Potomac River, this fish is being checked for a record. Alan Fitzwater Caught in the surf at Assateague Island Chum Line will be sent via in color to those members with active addresses. The black and white version will continue to be mailed to your home address. Please give it some thought as to how you would like to receive this information. The club could save significant funds by going electronic. A reminder from Ashley Cornelius that we now have an active Face Book account. To access, go to FC Sportfishing.com and look for the link. This month s guest speaker is Captain Ricky Ryals: Captain Rick Ryals as worked for Florida Sportsman Magazine for almost 20 years. He is currently the program director for Florida Sportsman Radio, and has written 2 books for FS. Capt. Rick was co-author on our Sportsman s Best: Snapper and Grouper, and the author of Sportsman s Best; Dolphin. Capt Ryals was not only entertaining, but shared some sage advice concerning weather patterns and what to pay attention to. Beware the Full Moon and North East wind. NOAA is usually of the mark when predicting wind speed and wave height with this combination. Winds out of the West usually don t last past 10 am and normally indicate the seas will lie down in the afternoon. If Storms are forecast in the morning along the coast, good fishing can be expected in the afternoon per Capt. Ryals, all in all, a very interesting and entertaining presentation. 50/50: was won by Trey Johnston (our printer) for $ You can now expect a reduced fee for the new club t-shirts, just kidding. Meeting was 9:30, "Learn the techniques that will help you capitalize on your share of the brown winter & white summer shrimp run. As seen on sports TV, shrimping enthusiast & Coastal Angler Magazine Monthly Columnist, female Captain Lee Noga will give you the best winter & summer shrimping tips & tricks in Central Florida to include gear deployment techniques & all the educational concepts necessary to go from a zero to a hero." Bonus - demonstration on how to deploy a cast net.

8 Flagler Sportfishing Club PO Box Palm Coast, FL Stamp Goes Here Mailing Address Goes Here Meeting called to order by Chuck Gleichmann at 7:30 pm. Andy Petersen led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes of the May meeting were reviewed and a motion to accept was made. Treasurer Tim Miller reported that we currently have $14, in checking. Tim also shared that more money is directed back to the membership during the year than the $10k collected in dues. Chuck Gleichmann welcomed members and guests to the evening s meeting. Attendance 65 with 14 of that number comprising either new members or guests. REPORTS: Weigh-Master Report: Capt. Mike stated we now have 5 weigh stations for members to weigh in their catch during the year long tournament. Mike also encouraged new members and guests to visit with him during the break so he could share the basics of club tournament rules. Bucket of Fun: Jill Scott was present this evening from Second Chance Rescue to accept a check for $4, as this year s beneficiary to the Bucket of Fun Tournament. Special thanks goes out to Dean Roberts, Hank Alper, Chuck Radloff, Capt. Mike and Jill Scott for their tireless effort in securing sponsors for this years Tournament. I believe this is the biggest contribution the club has ever been able to make to a Charity. There were many other volunteers that helped pull this event together, so it really does takes a village to make a Tournament successful. Old Business: Minutes taken by: Scott Fehrenkamp Cobia Tournament results: Only one fish was weighed in during the month long tournament. Mike Vickers Jr. came away with a check for $225.00, unfortunately I missed the weight of the fish but will include in next month s Chum Line. Surf Tournament: Tournament Director, Chuck Durkee was not present this evening, something about falling off a truck was mentioned. Chuck Gleichmann shared 50 people had signed up and everyone seemed to have a good time. Just as a reminder, the next Surf Tournament will be held on Oct 6 th, with more information to come. June Offshore Tournament: Capt Mike mentioned that since the tournament runs the entire month, anglers will need to take their catch to one of the 5 weigh stations and to included the Boat name on the weigh slip and that it is for the offshore tournament. 6 places will pay out, 3 for biggest fish and 3 for most species. Total payout is $1, You must fish at least 3 miles from shore. Kids Fishing Clinic: This will be the 3 rd year of this event. Turn out is expected to kids. Capt. Mike has secured rods and reels for each child with the support from many vendors. The event will be held July 14 th at Bings Landing, so be sure to come and volunteer your time for a worthy cause. New Business: Guys & Dolls: Scott and Ashley Cornelius are this years Chair persons who have gone to considerable effort to provide refreshing, new twist for club members. Music, pulled pork sandwiches and many goodies will be available. Please see the flyer in the June Chum Line for more details. Any Other New Business: Chris Davy introduced a young man whose unborn son will need heart surgery immediately after birth. Young Tristan will need multiple surgeries in order to repair the defect. Chris has asked the club to turn in pop tops to support the local Ronald McDonald house and also expressed interest in naming Tristan our beneficiary for the Fall Tournament. More information to follow hopefully with updates on Tristan s condition. Hank Alper explained the need for captains for the Share a Ride, especially during club tournaments. If you are interested, please contact Hank for more information. Hank also is chairing the drive for Boat Captains needed to volunteer for the winner s of the Kids Fishing clinic drawing. We anticipate we ll need about 15 boats this year in order to accommodate the increased participation. Costal Angler magazine is hosting a kids fishing clinic this weekend, so if anyone would like to help out, speak with Chuck Gleichmann. Aug CCA will be hosting the mid coast kids tournament in New Smyrna. It will be a catch, photo and release tournament to be held at Ponce Inlet. Please see Chuck Gleichmann for more details. Time to turn in any left over Jack Wilson raffle cards to Chuck Radloff.
