It s Spring Classic time! This tournament sets the tone for the year financially as well as sort of spiritually brothers and sisters. Why? I ll tell ya why. It marks the beginning of our world class summer time fishing around here. We need everyone who is not fishing to help out in every way you can. Get the word out to friends and neighbors who may want to enter. Help get the poster out to the community in local businesses, and get in touch with Chuck Radloff to volunteer at the Captains Meeting or Weigh-in. Mostly I encourage you to fish. You never know when that one cast will bring some big bucks! Besides included in the entry is one of our cool shirts worth $20, and we always help out a good cause. Highlight the 21 st and 22 nd and get out to the tournament, if nothing else just for a good time. Guest Speaker at the March 7 th Monthly Meeting was Jose Nunez representing Whitney Lab s Oyster Reef Restoration Initiatives. This program is designed to enhance oyster populations in our area. Mr. Nunez and his team brought along a biodiversity tank that showed how different sea creatures can coexist and help each other survive. Check out some of the photos in this issue of The Chum Line.

2 2 OFFICERS Chris Davy, President Bruce Bandes, Vice President Gary Fisher, Treasurer Carol Carter, Secretary Dean Roberts, Sgt. at Arms Rita Waddell, Weigh Master Mike Crotts, Quarter Master DIRECTORS Hank Alper, IT Specialist Andy Block John Falter Chuck Gleichmann Walt Huresky, Membership Bill May, Marketing Tim Miller Gene & Shay Morrow Emil Naeff Chuck Radloff Jeff Rafter Ellen Scheurer, Photographer WEBMASTER Jim Booth FACE BOOK ADMIN. Peter Bessette CHUM LINE EDITOR Ellen Scheurer April Forecast Capt. Jim Britto saltytalesfishingcharters.com Well, it will not be long and all of the talk will be about our nearshore Cobia bite! These big bruisers should be following the Manta Rays (currently in Brevard County) north just as soon as our water warms up a little more. When these fish arrive we will see everything from 10 foot jon boats to 30 + foot offshore vessels chasing them. On busy days remember to be courteous too many boats chasing the same ray will ensure that nobody gets a good chance to hook up. If you see another angler stalking a ray, stay back and keep alert, chances are another ray will come into the picture shortly. Artificial baits like large topwaters or plastic eels, and large swimbaits should make for a productive day. If bait is more your thing try pogies, mullet, shrimp, blue crabs, or even a large mud minnow. Inshore anglers can expect a steady diet of redfish, trout, and flounder now that spring has arrived. Fish deeper holes and creeks on an outgoing tide with shrimp, mullet, or your favorite artificial jig. Follow the fish onto the flats, on the incoming tides and target your favorite shoreline or oyster bars with these same baits, as well. Offshore captains will be productive with trolling spreads, dolphin show up in numbers at the start of spring. Skirted and naked ballyhoo have been the bait of choice. A few large wahoo are still being caught, as well. In the surf (much like the cobia) pompano are starting to show up in good numbers just to the south of Flagler County. Therefore, it should not be long and these delectable treats will be making their way north also. Shrimp, sand fleas, clams, and even jigs tipped with Fish Bites will all work well for an invitation to dinner! Surfcasters can also look forward to Spanish mackerel showing up in April. These fish are a lot of fun to target with Gotcha plugs, silver spoons or topwater plugs. Remember to use a heavier leader to prevent these toothy creatures from cutting you off. New Members Clinic by Walt Huresky Thanks to our speakers and their expertise, our New (and Old) Members Clinic was a great success. I want to thank Chuck Radloff, Captain Chuck Gleichmann who did double duty, Captain Miguel Pandich - The Kayak Man, Tim Miller who also did double duty, Peter Bessette, Bill May, Hank Alper, and Captain Jeff Rafter. The event was held at Herschel King Park and despite the somewhat windy conditions, we had a good turn out. Members had the opportunity to learn how to fish our local waters from people who are in the know. Our Club appreciates these people who take the time and interest in helping others enjoy what they do - catch fish! I also want to thank my wife, Ellen, and Pat Gleichmann who took the time to prepare coffee and serve juice and donuts. Thanks also go to Bob Luppold for making sure everyone received a show up raffle ticket, and Dana Synes for selling fifty fifties. Congratulations to winners: Chris Christain, $25 show up; Dusty Banks, $50 Discount to Boaters Exchange; Dave Neddeau Gift Card to Fishin Shack; new member Mike Janzen who won the rod and reel combo; and Ron Gorney who won $105 in the fifty fifty.

9 9 Guest Speaker - Bill Moore During Bill s teen years he fished the piers, bridges, and seawalls of greater Mimi and the Keys. He also fished the Everglades for bass, snook, and back water tarpon. During his college years at Stetson University, he fished for bass in many Central Florida lakes, rivers, and streams. In the late 60 s he lived for a couple of years in Ft. Meyers and fished around Sanibel and Pine Islands. In 1970 Bill, his wife and three daughters (you may be familiar with one of Bill s daughters, Carol Webb) moved to Lake Mary. For the next thirty years he fished for bass in the St. Johns River and nearby lakes, but spent most of his fishing time wading Mosquito Lagoon fishing for trout. The last ten year, Bill has been trying to learn how to catch fish from the Flagler Beach Pier and in the ICW in Flagler County. Of all the areas in our State Bill that has fished inshore, he has found the Flagler area the most challenging and the most rewarding. Bill believes the variety of game fish in our area is Outstanding compared to his past fishing experience. Club Meeting Minutes :00 7:30 PM: Captain Chuck Gleichmann Quick Tips on knot tying. He spoke to us about the importance of oyster reefs and estuaries. He also gave examples of some of the different fish such as Mahi Mahi that grow 20 lbs in one year and a White Sturgeon can grow to 20 feet long and be 1800 lbs. He was assisted in his talk and displays by Trish Reonus, Robin Holman, Pam Kleinsasser and Jody Block. He told us that oysters attach to a structure and oyster shells will settle on the bottom and attach on something and are there forever and they are called a spat, they grow fast and become clusters and that three months after hatching as a male, they become a female. Oysters function as ecosystem engineers, they filter and clean the waters, improving the quality of it. He told us that queen conch are a threat to the oyster reefs and have destroyed most of the oyster reefs by Matanzas. He had handouts on becoming an oyster gardener with oyster moduals that you grow and then return to Whitney Labs to be put back into the ocean. He also told us to be responsible boaters and to support oyster restoration. His information was very interesting and knowledgeable. He also had a tank display set up with some aquatic larvae fish, such as a lobster, it was so small you could hardly see them. 50/50 Winner: There was no 50/50 raffle at this meeting.
