Presentation of Year Long Awards and 2 nd Annual Smoked Fish Smoke-Off. Meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. Whew! After a cold and very windy February, March holds great promise for spectacular fishing in Flagler County. Last month some of our members CJ Johnston and his lovely bride to be Lauren Bennett cleaned up on the wahoo. On days that the weather allows fishing should remain good offshore. Check the Club website at fcsportfishing.com and Captain Jim s local fishing forecast. This month is full of activities for all at the worlds best fishing club. We have our New Members Clinic Saturday March 12 th at the Hammock Community Center. This clinic is open to all our members and guests, you will be taught fishing techniques and tips by local experts and charter captains. Also, we have the FREE Club Count the Spots Tournament on March 19 th. This tournament is a hoot, a Count the Spots event where the red with the most spots wins, not the largest - what fun. Coming in April please make plans to fish our 20 th Annual Spring Classic on April 23 rd. This year s benefactor is the Family Life Center, a domestic violence and sexual assault center that helps to protect, heal, and transform the lives of victims. How can you go wrong, a great day of fun and fishing and helping raise funds and awareness for a great cause? Chris Davy, President Flagler Sportfishing Club

2 2 OFFICERS Chris Davy, President Bruce Bandes, Vice President Tim Miller, Treasurer Carol Carter, Secretary Dean Roberts, Sergeant at Arms Rita Waddell, Weigh Master Bill May, Quarter Master DIRECTORS Hank Alper Andy Block Jim Britton Chuck Gleichmann Ellen Scheurer & Walt Huresky Bill May Jim & Claire McIntire Gene & Shay Morrow Emil Naeff Chuck Radloff Jeff Rafter Dean Roberts March Fishing Forecast Capt. Jim Britton (386) Inshore, we are starting to get reports of the beginnings of what promises to be a busy snook and tarpon bite. These reports are coming from southern Flagler county and northern Volusia county and are indicating that both soft plastics and suspending baits will do the trick. Trout can be targeted with your favorite soft plastic on a ¼ ounce jig head or by using live bait under docks and in deeper drop-offs. Redfish should start to actively roam around more as water temperatures rise. They will probably not be found in the larger winter schools. Therefore, targeting redfish around oyster bars with live or cut bait should make for an active trip on the water. Gold spoons and top water baits should work well also. During March, anglers will still be able to target keeper size black drum and sheepshead. Look for these fish in deeper holes and around structure. Your bait of choice should be either shrimp or fiddler crabs on a jig head or a fish finder rig. Reports from the pier and the surf, during February, were of mostly black drum and sheepshead. March should provide a more consistent bite with whiting, pompano, and blue fish showing up in numbers. Brined shrimp or clams, fresh shrimp, sand fleas, or Fishbites artificial bait on your favorite surf rig should yield a nice fish dinner! Offshore reports from the ledge have anglers finding good numbers of wahoo either trolling bait over live bottom or high-speed trolling. Blackfin tuna are being caught on darker color lures and ballyhoo as well. Offshore anglers who visit some favorite bottom numbers should be on the lookout for large cobia roaming structure. To hook up these curious creatures live bait, cut bait or artificial eels will all do the trick. MARCH GUEST SPEAKER: Rick Mackey will be joining us to discuss how to determine and use fish patterns in order to increase your chances on tournament day. Rick has fished both the IFA and the Florida Redfish Pro series for numerous years. He has the pictures and profits to prove that if you put your time o the water, all anglers can develop a game winning plan. Rick is proficient fishing the inshore waters from Jacksonville to Mosquito Lagoon on the east coast of Florida. WEBMASTER Jim Booth jimbooth97@yahoo.com FACE BOOK ADMIN. 3 3 BAIT SURF KAYAK March 2016 Featured Annual Sponsor By Bill May Bet you didn t know that the laid back guy that runs Bait Surf Kayak on A1A in Ormond by the Sea trained for the Olympic White Water and Kayaking trials in 1997 and even though he didn t make the team by just a hair, he did very well. Bet you didn t know that he jumped a 65 waterfall in a kayak and was the Hudson River, PA Cup and Sacandaga kayaking champion to name just a few. And he did all this for six years on various high level teams. My point is, this is an interesting man who is quiet, but if you can get inside his head a bit, he has really accomplished a lot. We are very fortunate to have Bill Muller as one of our annual sponsors for the second year now. Bill has been in business at this location for five years. He rents kayaks, paddle boards, surf boards, boogie boards, fishing poles and some other stuff. He also sells live and frozen bait and has a pretty steady supply of healthy, lively critters. I personally have bought shrimp from him and have not been disappointed. His hours are 5:30am to 10pm seven days a week although he is closed on Mondays through the winter months. One nice service that Bill offers is that if you need bait after hours, like at midnight or even 2am, as long as you call him during operating hours and let him know, he will arrange for you to pick the bait up when you need it. Again, you must call and order the bait before the shop closes at 10pm. He also sells frozen bait and other fishing related items and tackle. Also of importance, if you are there and the door is locked, just call the number on the door. He is always nearby and only minutes away. And finally, if you have never been in a kayak, or a paddle board or on any of the items Bill rents, he offers lessons and tours, all at very reasonable rates. Go see him. The address is 1644 Oceanshore Blvd, Ormond By the Sea, FL., Telephone number is (386) SUPPORT OUR ANNUAL SPONSORS Your Business Card Could go here for just $90.00 per year. 5 5 MARCH SPOTLIGHT - JOHN FALTER Club member and newly appointed Board of Director John Falter is a multifaceted person. Originally from Wisconsin and Minnesota, John moved to Palm Coast twelve years ago. He is all about fishing, organizing fishing clubs, and teaching others, in particular kids, how to fish. John worked with a programs such as Take a Kid Fishing, and fishing clinics, (including our own Kids Clinic held in July every year). For the clinics up North they used to go to parking lots, set up cans and have the kids practice casting into the cans. John was Charter President of the first Bass Master s Club in Wisconsin for four years. Within that time frame, he started 21 clubs throughout Wisconsin with over 500 members, raised a six-man team to go to the Bass Anglers National Tournament, while raising the funds to get there. Another event John set up for several years was the Governor s Open and worked with the Board of Tourism to set up the event. The initial goal was a no kill catch and release, and with a 97% survival rate, that was a success. John has fished and pursued bass in most of the United States. His favorite places being Lake Powell in Utah, the Great Lakes, and his favorite here in Florida is the St. John s River. He has also fished in several lakes in Canada. John has a great philosophy of fishing: 1. Go fishing; 2. Get good at fishing; 3. Shifts goal to catching big fish; 4. And finally experience just getting out there for the pleasure of it. John enjoys being an active member of Flagler Sportfishing Club because of the camaraderie of the people working together toward a common cause. But that s not where it ends with John. John was the Chairman of the 28th Annual Fall Classic Tournament in September The benefactor of this tournament was GratitudeAmerica. As John did in the past, he organized this event and helped to raise funds for this worthwhile cause. Because of the success of this tournament, GratitudeAmerica received $3, At a recent VFW meeting, GratitudeAmerica expressed their thanks to John and our Club for the donation and how it helped local veterans and their famalies and the families of the fallen. John is a veteran himself. You can usually find him at the VFW in Palm Coast, or somewhere in Palm Coast helping local veterans rebuild, update, or find comfort. Thank you, John, for your continued service. IMPORTANT Membership dues are due by March 31, 2016 Club dues are $60.00 per family Dues statements have been mailed, so if you are an existing member and did not receive one in the mail, please contact Tim Miller at Please review the statement and make any changes or corrections. 7 7 RESULTS ARE AS OF February 2 nd 2016 Ladies Discussion Group: Meeting opened up at 6 PM Attendance: Shay Morrow (Chairman), Scheyenne Welch, Dana Syens, Sue McDonald, Diana MacDonald, Dixie Daniels, Tracy Hamilton, Michelle Bridges, Virginia Riquier and Carol Carter. Items Discussed: It was mentioned that there will be a fishing clinic in St. Augustine on 2/20/16 for anyone interested in going. Virginia told us a fishing story of hand catching a doormat flounder. Shay discussed our Christmas party that was on Dec. 5 th with us and in case there were some new members present, the ones who attended let the other ladies know how great the party was and what a good time we all had. Shay informed us that this year the party will be held on Dec. 3 rd. Dana and Dixie told us about fishing in the Florida Keys, Puerto Rico and Guatemala and how great it was to go there. Shay brought up the subject and she would like to bring this up at the next director s meeting, that for the position of Angler of the Year and Lady Angler of the Year, it would be nice for the members and for the ladies in the club to be able to meet that person and for them to participate in the meetings and the events that we hold. It helps the members to relate to being able to obtain that status perhaps in the future. On February 4 th Club members attended the Annual CCA (Coastal Conservation Association) Banquet in Daytona Beach. Driving was miserable in all the heavy rain, but being there was worth it. Fun, food & prizes made it so!

8 8 Black & Red Tournament 13 February 2016, Bing s Landing By Bill May Sixty Seven Flagler Sportfishing Club members and a couple of guests signed up to brave the questionable weather to go after the prize money for one of our very popular club tournaments in February and from the large turnout, had a great time doing it. But in fairness, it wasn t only the prize money. Probably the majority of participants were just ready and anxious to go fishing and get this year kicked off. Of course, Gene Morrow worked night and day to put everything together (after patient and superior coaching by Captain Jim Britton) and as expected, the tournament was a great success. The day seemed to start off slow for many but as weigh-in time approached, the fish began to cooperate. Carol Webb, Bill Moore and Aby Moghanaki were the three winners in the Black Drum Category and Shane Stover, Ron Gorney and Kyle Long took the honors in the Redfish pot. The combined weight winner was Bill Moore. Pat Gleichmann placed first for the most spots in the Redfish category. Maybe the luckiest participant of the day was Carol Carter. Carol won a Star Rod mated with a Penn Reel and one of the Engel 30oz insulated mugs. Fred Manzolillo also won the other Engel Mug. John Mueller won a Family Fun Coupon Book and Dusty Banks won the 50/50. Finally, just for showing up, Brandon Pickett won $25. This tournament really seemed to get the year kicked off in the right direction. Everyone had a lot of fun, lots of fish were weighed in, the food was pretty good given that there was nothing left but empty wrappers, and no-one seemed in a hurry to leave. Lots of people pitched in and really made the tournament a great success. As always, Ellen Scheurer took some great pictures for the Chum Line, Facebook and the website. Our new weigh master Rita Waddell did a wonderful job and those of us that were watching her are convinced that she has done this before. So, we hope to see even more of our members and guests on March 19 th at the Count the Spots Tournament run by Andy Block. The bar has been set.

10 10 P.O. Box Palm Coast, FL Club Meeting - February 2, 2016 by Carol Carter Meeting opened at 7 PM with a discussion group. Chuck Gleichmann had an audience of anyone interested in learning about the Yearlong Tournament Rules. Also discussed were any other questions that people would have about fishing. Treasurer s Report: Tim Miller reported that we have $14, in the checking account. Notices for renewal of dues will go out in mid February and will be due back by March 31. If dues have not been paid by the end of April, you will be dropped from the membership. Tim also mentioned that he is in his last term as Treasurer and that the elections are in May, so anyone who might be interested in his position can see him at the break for information. Weigh Master Report: At this time, Rita Waddell was brought up front and the announcement was made that Rita has accepted the open position of Weigh Master. Rita said she is getting to know the job and that she will be gathering the weigh sheets and if anyone needs her help, to let her know. New Member/Visitor Greeting: Bruce greeted 5 new members or guests at tonight s meeting. Marineland Gratitude America Event: John Falter gave us a final report and update on the monies that were given to Gratitude America at the Fall Tournament. Dusty and John went to Gratitude America s program for our veteran s who suffer from PTSD. There were 15 men and 15 of their caretakers participating. The men spent time in meetings and conferences and the caretakers had an opportunity to sit down with a psychologist to discuss their problems also. They were given lodging, food, entertainment and seminars. This is what our $3,300 donation paid for and our money was well spent and every dollar went towards helping those men and their caretakers. John also mentioned that when we hold our tournaments, we need everyone possible to volunteer and help us out. Family Life Center, Spring Benefactor: Jim McIntire said the captain s meeting for this tournament will be held on April 22 nd and the tournament will be on April 23 rd. Location for the meeting and tournament is still being researched. Our benefactor this year will be the Family Life Center located in Bunnell. Tammy Sanner, Finance Director, at the Center addressed the members and explained to us that they are a organization that helps victims of domestic and sexual violence. They provide counseling, emergency shelter for families, they secure safe housing for those families and they transition the families from victims to survivors. Home Show Wrap Up: Walt Huresky told us that he would like to see volunteers from the membership, other than just the directors, helping at next years event. As far as he knows, we had 5 members that signed up so far. The special Home Show offer of 14 months for the price of 12 months was still good until March of March 12 th will be our New Members Clinic to be held at Hammock Community Center. All members are welcome to attend. There will be information about it in the March Chumline. Last year there were 80 members who attended. Black & Red Tournament: Bill May and Gene Morrow will be the chairmen for this tournament. It will be held on 2/13/16, it starts at 7 AM, you can fish anywhere in our areas in a boat, offshore, at the pier or the beach. Weigh in will be held at Bings Landing between 3-4 PM. There will be prizes for 1 st, 2 nd & 3 rd places, combined weight, redfish with the most spots and a special raffle for a show up bonus. Raffle prizes will be 2 Engel hot/cold travel mugs, an entertainment coupon book, and a Penn rod and reel combo. First fish weighed in will be the winner if there is a tie in that category. Cost if you are just coming to eat will be $5. Guest Speaker-Larry Finch: Larry told us that December January the water temperature is around 68 degrees. When that temperature goes below 65-66, the pompano move south and that we should go where the fish are, so you have to travel to where the water temperature is around 68 degrees. He told us that he tries to match the color bead he uses on his rigs to the color that is on the clam shell, the clams are called Doknots. He uses live bait, clams, shrimp and sand fleas. The pompano will be in New Smyrna in March, going north and should be in Flagler after that. He said when baiting the sand flea, you should put the hook going from underneath, where the egg sack is and go up through the top. He uses a 15 lb test leader with a small hook, like a 1.0 circle hook and on a calm day a 4 ounce Spudnik sinker. He demonstrated his sand flea dance, which gets him plenty of sand fleas. As always, we all gained a great deal of knowledge from his presentation. 50/50 Drawing: was $ won by Mark Juliano
