2 SECONDARY CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES 2018 This is a list of the co-curricular activities expected to be offered in the Secondary School in The College strongly encourages students to become involved in at least one activity, but asks that students conversely do not become too involved to the detriment of their studies. If you are interested in obtaining details about any of the activities offered, please contact the Charge at the College. Co-Curricular ATHLETICS Phil Coppock Term 3, Monday & Wednesday afternoons. Training year round on the Main Oval. AFL Ben Stanley Open Boys - Term 3. Training to be arranged as the season commences. Junior Boys and all Girls competitions will be held throughout the year in Terms 1-3. BASKETBALL Bill Hooper Term 3 into Term 4. Junior (Yr 7/8); Intermediate (Yr 9/10) and Senior (Yr 11/12). Boys & Girls teams train on weekday afternoons from May until October. Holiday Skills Camps and intra-college 3 on 3 Tournaments are part of our pre-season. CHAPEL Chaplain Lizzy Chapel Committee aims to assist and promote the place of the chapel and worship at the heart of the College. The committee meet fortnightly and discuss and action ideas. Inter House, District carnival, Regional Trials. Venue for all events is the tartan track at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Sunshine Coast interschool competition coordinated by AFL Queensland Sunshine Coast, Wednesday afternoons. Gala Days are also held with Junior Boys, Girls & Senior Girls attending full day interschool carnivals. Sunshine Coast Interschool Basketball Competition, round robin throughout Term 3 with finals held early in Term 4. Games hosted on a home and away basis on Friday afternoons from 3:30pm until 7:30pm. Divisions based on age, gender and ability. Senior Boys and Girls teams compete in the Champion School of Queensland Tournament each September. This commitment is for a year and is seen as service and leadership in the College community to the chaplain. Fortnightly lunchtime meeting and prayers. 3 CHEERLEADING Jo Bush All year Tuesday afternoon 3:30pm - 5:00pm (Cheer) 5:00pm - 6:00pm (Pom) Girls and boys able to train and compete in various interschool and invitational carnivals around SE Qld that start in June and continue through to November. Semester One is dedicated to developing skills and learning routines to compete. Recommend compulsory attendance for the first semester to ensure teams are ready for competition. 4 CHESS Joshua Christie Students meet weekly for coaching and play. CRICKET Greg Blanch All year. Training held on Thursday afternoons, Term 1 and 4 and as required on Thursday afternoons, Terms 2 and 3. School teams enter Sunshine Coast competitions and inter-school events. College competition. Private and group training by arrangement. The Secondary First XI competes in the State wide school s competition organised by QLD Cricket. There are also matches against touring schools and the annual Wanderers and Old Boys Forrester Shield matches to contest. Other teams include a Middle School (Year 7/8/9) team, which competes in the State Wide Schools competition and local games as available. Training begins late in Term 1, Monday & Wednesday afternoons. Teacher supervised lunchtime runs during lead up to Inter-House carnival in Term 2. Inter-House Carnival, Independent Schools and Sunshine Coast Regional Trials. Regional Champions 2007, 2008, 2009, 2013 Independent District Champions 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 DEBATING Skye Wallden Season: Terms 3-4 Rounds; Term 4 Finals (if there). Team Meetings: lunchtimes weekly (determined by team and coach). Sunshine Coast Debating Chancellor s Cup Preliminary Round: Four debates in Semester Two. Finals: Term 4. Short prep only. Years 6-7 (Juniors) Years 8-9 (Intermediate) Years (Seniors) Preliminary and finals rounds held on Sunshine Coast. DRAMA PRODUCTION Rob Neale Productions alternate between Musicals and an evening of One Act Plays. Rehearsals run from the beginning of Term 1 until Production Week which is generally Term 2 Week 5. Auditions for One Act Plays take place in Term 1 of the Year of the production. Students will be required to attend at least one rehearsal per week at the discretion of the Director. Auditions for the musical will take place in Term 4 of the year prior to the musical. Students will be required to attend at least two rehearsals per week at the discretion of the Director. The College production has been in operation for over 20 years will a be an evening of One Act Plays. Students can be involved on stage, backstage and in musical years, in the orchestra/band.

5 DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD & BRIDGE AWARD ENVIRONMENT CLUB Ryan Edwards Operates all year. Dukes operates at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels according to age. Bridge Award is an introduction to the three more senior levels, and operates as Level 1 then Level 2. Bridge candidates generally begin at age 12, Level 2 at 13, then Bronze at 14, and so on. Adventurous Journey dates are advertised in semester calendars as the arrangements are finalised. Sheree Bell Operates all year. Year 7-12 students work together on environmental projects, including the established Revegetation Days to remove weeds and plant native species that increase biodiversity in our forest. Students have a key role to play in initiatives to increase sustainability at the College and to increase community awareness. EQUESTRIAN Julene Robertson All year, with selected events contested on individual and team bases. EVENTS Gary Davis Technical support of College based events, including Assemblies, Drama performances, social events and fundraisers. FLINDERS WRITERS GROUP Donna Skilton All year. Meetings take place two times per term, to be negotiated. Attend the Voices on the Coast festival and have 1-2 published authors visit the school and conduct workshops with the Flinders Writers Group to extend their writing skills. Includes many of the major inter-school events in Brisbane in Terms 1-3, and the local and State show circuit and State and National titles. There is currently an enthusiastic team of show jumping, dressage and showing competitors. No competition as such, training via staff and peer student groups. Some events require during school assistance and others during the evenings or weekends. The Flinders Writers Group, known as the Scribblers, is for those students who love to write - stories, poems, columns, plays - anything! This activity operates through My Flinders, where local to international competitions are publicised. You are encouraged to enter your creations into these competitions, which have fantastic prizes on offer and give you the opportunity to have your work publicly recognised and published. Recipients of Awards during the year are presented with Certificates at Awards Night at year s end. Meeting shared goals relating to the environment and the College s response in reducing our footprint, facilitating leadership opportunities and having fun with peers in shared activities. Highlights include individual riders excelling in their chosen disciplines, with many qualifying for national championship events. Members' work published both locally and nationally. Prizes of up to $1400 cash have been awarded to individual members. Annual publication of members' works titled An Anthology of Prose.

6 FRENCH CLUB Jane Boussalem French Club operates all year. It is run by the President and Vice- President. They usually choose one lunch time per week and advertise events on My Flinders or Flinders French Facebook. HOCKEY Wendy Cook Training March to September - training afternoons vary due to turf availability. INTERACT Carol Marais At lunchtimes Wednesday in M2 plus after school and weekend events. The club is open for Year 7 to Year 12 students doing French at Flinders. A range of activities and cultural discoveries from games, songs and food testing. It is an opportunity for students to catch up and practice their French. It is also a way to improve and get more confident in speaking. Senior students will help in homework and the Annual French Competition, which is held every year in August and where Flinderians win many medals. College 1st teams enter a State-wide Schools competition in October and in 2017 participated in a Wide Bay Schools competition. The College also plays friendly games against local and International visitors. Service group which raises money for local and international charitable organisations, operates under the umbrella of local Rotary Clubs. Open to students Yrs A great way to improve your French in all skills. Discover the French culture by learning French songs and eating French food. Enjoy the ambiance with other French students. Get the best prizes in any competition held on the Sunshine Coast. State Finalists Qld All Schools Cup Toowoomba 2017 Wide Bay Schools Competition, Gympie Flinders is the only school on the Sunshine Coast to offer Hockey. Since 2011, Hockey has been part of the biennial Sports Tour to the UK in September. College Ensembles are open to all students in Years 7 to 12. 8 READERS CUP Sarah Ridgewell Yr 8 and Yr 9 competitions are in Terms 1, 2 and 3. Yr 7 competition is in Terms 3 and 4. RUGBY Michael Molloy Pre-season strength, skills and conditioning training commences in November for Opens. Regular season training occurs across Terms 1 and 2 on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30pm - 5:00pm with games in SCSSRU Schools competition for U13,14,15 and Opens on Wednesday evenings from 4:00pm 8:00pm in Term 2. In Terms 3 and 4 Rugby 7 s is made available for U13, U15 and Open Girls and Boys teams. SCIENCE CLUB Chris Straughan Wednesdays 3:30-4:30pm Students are invited to make up teams of four and read selected books as a team. Students compete by answering questions about the books. The winning teams then represent Flinders in Sunshine Coast Regional interschool competitions. Flinders hosts international visiting teams and in 2018 we look forward to welcoming schools from the United Kingdom. Regular tours are also organised for all teams including Ballymore Cup, John Elders Cup at Downlands College, Rugby 7 s, U15 s Tour and biennial European Tour. In 2016 we introduced the Mount Kelly School Student Exchange Program where two Year 10 students have the opportunity to complete their Term 4 studies at this UK based school as well as being part of the rugby program there. The following year Mount Kelly reciprocates by sending two students to complete Term 2 at Flinders. Students design and conduct their own investigations that run over several weeks. Grand finals at or near the end of Term 1 / start of Term 2 for Seniors and at the end of Term 4 for Junior and Intermediate players. Premiers Open Girls B Division 2008 Runners-up Open Girls B Division 2009 Term 3 (Week 7 onwards) - Preseason for Junior and Intermediate Boys and Girls training days dependent on pitch availability. Term 4 - Training for Junior and Intermediate Boys and Girls on Tuesday afternoons 3:15pm - 4:45pm. Matches on Wednesday afternoons as per draw when available. STUDENT 2 STUDENT READING PROGRAM Natalie Johnston Terms 2 and 3 The Smith Family Student 2 Student Reading Mentor Program. If you enjoy reading and read well, then you could use your skills to become a mentor and help another student to improve their reading skills. Twice a week, mentors hear their student read to them over the phone, offering gentle guidance, encouragement and support. Most students greatly improve their reading ability as well as a huge boost to their self-confidence. SURF SPORTS John Thomas No formal training. Representative opportunities available through District and Regional schools pathways (Representative School Sports My Flinders Group). Inter-House competitions open to all interested. SWIMMING Gary Davis School based season Term 1, some activity in Term 4. Senior Championship - Sunday in November Junior Championship - last Tuesday of school year Representative trials - Term 2 Term 1 Inter-House, Independent District and Sunshine Coast Regional competitions. 10 TENNIS Alison McKenzie Term 1 Tennis Friendly Term 2 All Schools competition Wednesday afternoon for all player levels. Term 3 TQ competition advanced players Term 3 Flinders Tennis Open school competition for both primary and secondary students Annual school organised event against Fraser Coast Anglican College played: home and away. This competition consists of teams comprised of Year 7-12 boys and girls on Wednesday afternoons 4:00pm-6:00pm. Flinders versus other secondary schools on the Coast. Trials held late in Term 1. Secondary Schools Statewide Knockout competitions for senior and junior teams, male and female. We play a timed Fast4 competition to determine the Regional winner early in Term 3. Internal competition for all Flinders students (Primary & Secondary) who wish to play singles, doubles or mixed doubles. GIRLS State representation at the National Titles in Albury , 2013 Regional representatives at State Championship in Rockhampton (2nd), 2013 (2nd), 2014 (6th), 2015 (3rd) Sunshine Coast Regional TQ competition (1st), 2012 (2nd), 2013 (1st), 2014 (1st), 2015 (1st). BOYS Sunshine Coast Regional TQ competition (1st) Regional representatives at State Championship in Rockhampton (6th), 2015 (3rd) Flinders winners - All Schools competition Div A: 2015 TOUCH FOOTBALL Scott Kennedy Term 3 - Games Wednesday afternoon. Training held on Tuesday afternoons 3:30pm- 4:30pm, some other times may be required as we use State and National player/ coaches and it is subject to their availability. Term 3 SCISSA Competition held at various schools 4:00pm-6:00pm. Invitational games against FCAC (Fraser Coast Anglican College) and possible entry into local and state carnivals such as Sunshine Coast All Schools and Queensland All Schools. Individual players in Regional and State teams Including current Australian Women s Player Mia Johnston and Queensland School s representative Rachel Walsh teams played in Grand final - 1st Girls and Boys won Grand Final; 2nd Girls won Grand Final teams in SCISSA Competition, 9 Finalists, 7 Grand Finalists and Premiers in Junior Boys A, Junior Girls A, Senior Girls A and Senior Girls B teams in SCISSA Competition with over 150 students participating; 4 of 6 A Division Grand Finalists. Undefeated Premiers in Junior Boys A, Intermediate Boys A and Open Girls A. Runnersup Intermediate Girls A teams in SCISSA with 200 students participating. 13 finalists and 8 Grand Finalists.

11 TRIATHLON Garry James Season starts end of October beginning of November. Triathletes usually train with local clubs with skills augmented through school based sessions. All Schools Triathlon Championships (Nov) selection for region representation. State Championships held in February followed by the School Sport National Triathlon Championships in April. Teams also enter Mooloolaba and Noosa Triathlon (Olympic distance). State & National Female Triathlon Champion, numerous regional and state representatives. TUTORIALS Gary Davis Available to all Secondary students by appointment. Mathematics - formal tutorials weekly, after school. Head of Mathematics to advertise each term. PEER TUTORING Gary Davis Dates and times to be advised when Senior Committee is established in Peer tutoring face to face in the Library and available on-line. Information will be shared with parents and students via MyFlinders. VOLLEYBALL Kathryn Rooke- Jones Term 1 SCISSA for Yr 7-10 Term 2 SCISSA for Yr Training usually Friday afternoons for Juniors, mornings for Seniors, but is dependent on availability of players and coaches. Term 1 only Sunshine Coast Interschool Trish Buckley Shield competition held on three consecutive Friday nights at Caloundra Indoor Stadium for Senior and Open boys and girls (Yrs 10, 11 and 12). Sunshine Coast Independent Schools (SCISSA) competition held Wednesday afternoon/nights at various Independent schools on the Sunshine Coast. 12 WATER POLO Noel Hayes Term 3 and 4 training in the College pool on Wednesday afternoon 3:30-5:30pm for all players. Thursday 3:30-5:00pm - Junior Teams. 5:00-6:30pm - Int Girls and Open Girls. 6:00pm-7:30pm - Int Boys and Open Boys. Sunshine Coast interschool competition held Monday nights at venues around the Coast - Kawana, Nambour and Noosa. 13 Also available are the following activities run by Flinders Clubs which are co-ordinated by parent volunteers. These clubs are affiliated to the P&F and play predominately on weekends. Co-Curricular BASKETBALL Flinders Basketball Club Person in Charge for 2018 Helen Court- Williams Season and Training Days Summer season is Term 4 and Term 1. Winter season is Term 2 and 3. Training is normally on Tuesday after school 3:30pm until 4:30pm. Competition In 2017 we have teams for both boys and girls in the U12 age group for those born in 2007 and Also the U14 age group for those born in 2005 and 2006 and U16s for those born in 2003 and The girls teams and the U16 boys play on a Monday after school at the Clippers Stadium in Buderim. The U12 and U14 boys teams play on a Wednesday after school at the same location. Achievements & Other Information Flinders Basketball Club welcomes all students who wish to learn or develop their playing skills. Our aim is for all children to enjoy the game and have the chance to play as part of the Clippers Basketball club competition. There is no basketball during the school holidays. U11 s play in the Qld Cricket run T20 Blast format with the emphasis on participation and an introduction to cricket. T20 Blast is run in conjunction with Flinders. The format is 16 overs per side and it is played using a soft ball. The games are played on a Friday evening. The U11 s, U12 s, U13 s, U14 s, U15 s & U16 s play in the Sunshine Coast Cricket Association Junior competition on a Saturday. Depending on age levels, the games vary from 20 overs per side to two day games and are played under QJA & local association rules. The season generally runs in Terms 4 and 1 with a few games at the start and end of the Christmas break. Flinders Cricket Club is a successful and caring cricket club which caters for U10 up to U16 age groups. Club teams play home and away, with older cricketers using the turf pitch on Forester Fields. Sunshine Coast Cricket Association Club season runs between the first Saturday in October until mid March, with a break for Christmas holidays. Contact: Mike Keane m.keane7@bigpond.com FOOTBALL (SOCCER) Flinders Football Club Michael Wallden The season commences mid-march and finishes mid-august. Training is normally held on Tuesdays and Fridays after school on the MFAC ovals. Players can register via the selfregistration system from early February. FFC hold two open days at MFAC after school on the 2 nd & 3 rd Fridays in Term 1. Players from U6 to U12 (ie Prep through to children turning 12 in the year) play in the Sunshine Coast Football MiniRoos football matches against teams from other football clubs across the Sunshine Coast. Matches are generally played on Saturdays. In 2018, FFC will also have an U13 and U14 team, who will compete in the Sunshine Coast Football Juniors competition against teams from other football clubs across the Sunshine Coast. Again, matches are generally played on Saturdays. MiniRoos is a smaller version of football that provides boys and girls aged 4-12 with a fun introduction to the game. It is designed for kids with the emphasis on having fun and learning new skills. Flinders Football Club is a small, friendly club that has proved to be a wonderful environment to nurture and improve the soccer skills and enjoyment of the game for players of all abilities. Training begins mid Term 1. As there is no School Hockey Competition on the Sunshine Coast, Flinders students play in the Sunshine Coast Hockey Association; fixtures played at Ballinger Park Hockey Centre, Buderim on weekends with juniors playing Saturday mornings. Teams compete under the auspices of the Flinders Hockey Club. Flinders Hockey is one of the largest clubs on the coast, not only offering opportunities for students, but Old Flindarians, parents and friends. Juniors start with J3 competition, being for 12 years and under. Trials are generally held over a two week period and then teams are announced. Team training times and days are then decided on by the Coach and Players usually a mutually acceptable day and time for all (Monday to Thursday). Our younger teams, Modified Green and Gold (ages 7-8 years) train on a Friday afternoon 3:30pm 4:30pm. All training is held at Flinders in the Primary Pavilion (Red Shed). Competition: February to September, Juniors Saturday mornings, Ladies Social Tuesday evenings. We enter teams in the Sunshine Coast Netball Association competitions which run on Saturday mornings (Ages 7-18 years) and on Tuesday nights (Ladies or girls 16 years+) from March to September.. Flinders Netball Club began in 2003 and is affiliated with the Flinders P&F Association. We are an open club and any members of the wider community are welcome to join. Our club aims to foster and encourage the skills of anyone wanting to learn about netball, whether it be through playing, coaching, umpiring or managing. 15 Person in Charge for 2018 Season and Training Days Competition Achievements & Other Information RUGBY Flinders Rugby Club Damien Groves Season training begins during Term 1 in preparation for commencement of the season after Easter and continues until late August. Sides in age groups from U7 through to U15 play in the Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby Union competition on Saturday mornings from Easter to mid August with a break for the mid year school holidays. Games are played at Noosa, Peregian Springs, Nambour, Maleny, Matthew Flinders, Sunshine Coast Grammar School, Sunshine Coast University, Maroochydore and Caloundra. Tours are also organised to provide players with experiences. Since 2011 our U12 s have contested The Armidale School Rugby Carnival, the premier U12 s carnival nationally. Our U8 s to U13 s visit the Gold Coast each July. Flinders Rugby Club is an ideal introduction to the sport of Rugby. Our U12 s won the prestigious Team of the Carnival award in 2015 & 2013, The Armidale School Rugby Carnival and were winners of the U12 Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby Union competition in 2011 and U13 s were Runners Up in 2012 and U14 s Minor Premiers and Runners Up in 2015 of the Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby Competition. In 2016 our U12 s won the Sunshine Coast All Schools Competition and our U12 s and U15 s contested Semi-Finals in the Sunshine Coast Club Rugby Competition. A number of our players each year are selected in Regional representative teams.
