2 Special Olympics Frequently Asked Questions As our 2018/2019 season begins, I wanted to share some information with all families, teachers, and participants to ensure everyone is informed about sport-specific details, competition guidelines, and athletic skills. Q: We practice one day a week how can I continue to increase my endurance, strength, and flexibility outside of this weekly practice? A: We strongly encourage athletes to exercise in some format at least 2-3 days per week. The following page contains suggested exercises that will increase your endurance, strength, and flexibility. If you have any questions about these exercises, please ask your coach or the Special Olympics Director, Elizabeth. Always modify exercises as needed don t overdo! We also ask athletes to attend practices weekly to continue to work on sport-specific skills and practice with your fellow athletes. Getting to know your teammates and working with them regularly is a key component to a successful team! Q: How is the decision made of who to take to State competitions? A: For our State competitions in Volleyball and Basketball (that fall outside of the annual State games in May), we hold a round-robin tournament with all athletes on the team. From this tournament, teams are chosen to attend the State competitions. With the start of the 2018/2019 season we are also trying to form new partnerships to provide additional opportunities for scrimmages/games/events against other teams within our region. These additional playing opportunities will provide a chance for all athletes to experience a game, build skills, and meet other athletes. For our State competition in May, athletes who have received first place in their division are eligible to attend. A lottery system is utilized to select athletes, thereby ensuring fair selection of attendees. To increase your chances of being selected for State games, we strongly encourage athletes to participate in multiple sports. If you have any questions, please contact Elizabeth Kaufman, Lee County Special Olympics Director, at or ekaufman@auburnalabama.org.

3 Special Olympics 2018/2019 Season Weekly Workouts Please complete the following exercises to the best of your ability at least twice weekly, with at least one rest day in-between each workout. For example, if your practice is on Tuesdays, exercises could be done on Thursday and Saturday. These exercises are in addition to your scheduled practice(s), and are designed to help you build endurance, strength, and flexibility. If you are having difficulty with any of the exercises, please contact Elizabeth or your Special Olympics Coach for modifications. ===================================================================== Endurance: Walk or run ½-1 mile OR swim 25 meters Strength (see pictures): 15 squats 15 wall push-ups 10 lunges (each leg) 45 second plank 15 sit-ups or 20 crunches 15 hip bridges 5 burpees Flexibility (see pictures): 30 second quad stretch, each side 30 second shoulder stretch, each side 30 second chest stretch 30 second hip abductor stretch, each side Wall Push-Up Burpee Plank Hip Bridge Squat 30 second hip adductor stretch, each side 15 arm circles (both directions) 15 wrist circles (both directions) 15 ankle rolls (both directions) Quad Stretch Shoulder Stretch Chest Stretch Hip Abductor Stretch Hip Adductor Stretch
