1 Hi- my name is Michelle Deese Bain and I am BLESSED to be a two year melanoma survivor! As an avid tanning bed lover and sun worshipper, I spent the majority of my teens and twenties soaking up as many rays as possible, never realizing the damage I was doing to my largest organ. Then, at the age of 32, I heard the words I m sorry, but you have malignant melanoma from my dermatologist. Luckily, we had caught it in the early stages and all that was required was the initial tumor site removal, which within itself was a beast. For now, all that is required is to have regular skin checks, (I have graduated from every 3 months to every 6 months- YAY me!) blood work, chest x-ray and eye examsas I learned that melanoma can hide out in your lungs, brain and eyes. The mela-monster, as I have not-so-lovingly renamed it, is a tricky cancer- with very successful survival rates when caught early. However, it s a fast mover and one must be vigilant when checking for any changes in their skin. That being said, I have made it my mission to educate and help prevent this deadly cancer from claiming any more lives. Last year I launched the Michelle-A-Noma Tour where I speak at schools/events/anyone who will listen about the dangers of too much UVA/UVB exposure, a Facebook page (Spread the Lotion: A melanoma awareness page), and have done a few media interviews. In March, I gave my testimony at the State House in Montgomery in hopes that our state will pass some sort of legislation restricting the usage of tanning equipment to minors and was honored to take part in our ACS CAN State Lobby Day. I am so grateful to have had such love and support from my family, friends, and husband Craig during this journey, as well as Dr. Shelley Ray, Dr. Cindy Cater and the amazing staff at Advanced Dermatology- not to mention all of the wonderful resources at cancer.org, the American Cancer Society s website. May is skin cancer awareness month (Melanoma Monday is on the 6 th - Don t Fry Day is on the 24 th ) During this time I encourage you all to do your ABCDE and now U skin check and become familiar with your skin- it takes 10 minutes! Please, limit your sun exposure time, buy a cute hat and beach umbrella, become friends with a good sunscreen and break that tanning bed habit if you have it. Skin cancer will affect one in five Americans at some point in their lifetime, melanoma will affect one in fifty- please protect your skin. AND DON T FORGET TO WEAR SUNSCREEN!!!
