3 Descendants of Point Lookout Organization 2009 Pilgrimage Information October 9th, 2009 Lee s Miserables POW Reenactors will meet at Confederate Memorial Park at 10:00 AM Friday morning. October 9th, 2009 Descendants Dinner/Meeting Friday night we are meeting at the Firehouse for dinner at 6:30 PM sharp! Directions and a map will be sent via to get you to the Firehouse. Christopher James McCall, DOPL member & Commander of the Vincent Camalier Camp #1359 was gracious enough to set up a catered dinner (from a very good restaurant) for us at the Firehouse. The cost will be $20, and the main course will be your choice of BBQ chicken or BBQ ribs, the side dishes are seasoned new potatoes, cole slaw and baked beans. Beverage and tip are included in this price. After our meal there will be a short break, then we will have our Annual Descendant s Meeting. PLEASE CONTACT William moonrib@yahoo.com (or your regular contact number) if you plan on eating with us before the meeting at the Firehouse. We need an accurate count so that we will be sure to have enough food for those who wish to eat, as well as to prevent wastage of food. At the meeting all of the descendants will introduce themselves and their Ancestor. Many people find new family this way and we have even had a few marriages from meetings at the Firehouse! The DOPL Love Connection. The meeting usually breaks up between 9 and 10 PM. Rev. Herman White will get our blood pumping with a speech that I m sure will be no less than wonderful. Then it will be our honor to see DOPL member/ speaker Donald Wilson in action this year. Donald is a member of our Lee s Miserables POW Reenactors, portraying John J. Omenhausser. Donald s program: John Jacob Omenhausser, Point Lookout Prisoner of War Artist, October 10th, 2009 SCV Memorial / Descendants Ceremony Saturday at 11 AM we will be joining the SCV Camp at the Cemetery Monument for their ceremony, then there will be a cannon salute at the end of their meeting. The group will then be able to walk right down the road to Confederate Memorial Park. Our Ceremony will begin at 1 PM at the Park. William Hagin, President of DOPL will start with opening remarks then will introduce Fr. Rev. Alister Anderson, who will speak for about 25 minutes. A wreath will be placed at the Monument by a Lady in Full Blacks who will try her best not to limp. She even got a black cast... Mark and Patty Sheehan will be firing their cannon again this year to salute our Confederate dead. If you saw the pictures from last year they were the one s in the pouring rain firing the cannon. Afterwards the Living history area and the vendors will be open, including our very own Sutler Shoppe which will have all available stock to show, and will be accepting special orders as well for sizes and goods which we sell out of. As always, these items will be sold at close to their actual cost. The Suttler Shoppe is mainly a service to the members so that they can show their pride in their ancestors. We will also be softly playing traditional Southern Heritage music of various types through our great new PA system for everyone s enjoyment. Grilled hot dogs and soft drinks/cold water will available for sale by a volunteer from Confederate Memorial Park. Proceeds will go towards the Confederate Memorial Park maintenance fund to keep our park beautiful! There will be a large 20 x 40 tent in case of rain, and the vendors will be inside the tent. This should be a nice time of fellowship, fun and even shopping. We hope that everyone will have a good time while still honoring their ancestors. 3

5 My grandfather, Capt David Lynn CSA, and his two brothers, John and Sprigg fought under the Crossland Banner. Photo after the War, left to right, John Galloway, David and Sprigg Singleton. Sprigg led 52 horsemen into Cumberland, Maryland, his hometown, in the waning days of the War and captured General Crook and Kelly from their beds with 8,000 Federal soldiers in the town. Rode South with their prisoners without firing a shot. Col. Mosby on interview said the only way he could surpass this feat would be to take Lincoln from his bed in the White House. This article contributed by Norris Camp member and Compatriot Capt. South T. Lynn who also owns the Kennedy Farm, the farm that John Brown prepared for the Harper s Ferry raid. 5

6 The Maryland State Flag Officially adopted by law on March 9, 1904, the Maryland State Flag is the only state flag based on heraldic emblems. The design of the flag is taken from the shield in the coat of arms of the Calvert family, the colonial proprietors of the state of Maryland. The coat of arms adopted by George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore, included a shield that combined the yellow and black colors of his paternal family and the red and white colors of his maternal family, the Crosslands. (NOTE: There is contention that the red and white colors identified as those of the Crosslands is a misrepresentation. It is said that the colors are those of the Mynne family, the family name of Anne Calvert, wife of George Calvert.) The arms of the Calvert and Crossland (Mynne) families are displayed in diagonally opposing quadrants of the flag. From the colonial period, before the revolution, the only mention of a Maryland flag describes it as a display of the yellow and black Calvert family colors. After the revolution, the use of the Calvert flag was discontinued and various flags and banners were flown to represent the state. Though no official state flag was designated, the most popular representation seems to have been that of the state seal on a blue background. Evidence shows that these flags were flown in the state until the late 1890 s. In 1854, a law was passed to create a new state seal based on the Calvert family colors and design. Yellow and black banners and flags started re-appearing across the state. These Baltimore colors or Maryland colors, as they were called, were not officially adopted by the state but became very popular and a unique symbol of the state of Maryland. 6

7 After the election of Abraham Lincoln it 1861, Maryland, like many other states found itself torn between its allegiance to the Union and its sympathies with the southern states. Maryland, however, did remain in the Union. It is thought that during this volatile time in the history of Maryland, the red and white Crossland colors began to gain popularity among the southern sympathizers in the state. As a symbol of resistance to the Union and President Lincoln, the red an white Crossland colors became the Maryland secession colors and were reproduced in banners and even children s clothing. During the Civil War itself, the Crossland colors in the cross bottony configuration were used by Confederate soldiers to identify their birthplace. The Civil War finally came to an end and the yellow and black Calvert colors and the red and white Crossland colors had become clearly representative of the state of Maryland. As soldiers returned to their home, a slow process of healing and reconciliation began for the people of war-torn Maryland. A new symbol began to emerge displayed at public events across the state. A flag displaying the colors, that had once symbolized the divisions between the citizens of Maryland, came to represent the reconciliation and reunion of all of the citizens in the state. The designer and the date of origin of the current state flag incorporating four quadrants alternating between the yellow and black of the Calvert arms and the red and white of the Crossland arms is unknown. The design derived from the Calvert coat of arms was flown October 11, 1880, in Baltimore, at a parade celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding of the city. It was also flown October 25, 1888 at the Gettysburg battlefield, in a ceremony dedicating monuments to members of the Maryland regiments of the Army of the Potomac. In October 1889, the Fifth Regiment, Maryland National Guard, adopted a flag in this form as its regimental colors and became the first organization to adopt officially what is today the Maryland flag. (a) In general.- The State flag is quartered. (b) First and fourth quarters.- The 1st and 4th quarters are paly of 6 pieces, or and sable, a bend dexter counterchanged. Thus, the 1st and 4th quarters consist of 6 vertical bars alternately gold and black with a diagonal band on which the colors are reversed. (c) Second and third quarters.- The 2nd and 3rd, quarterly, are argent and gules, a cross bottony countersigned. Thus, the 2nd and 3rd quarters are a quartered field of red and white, charged with a Greek cross, its arms terminating in trefoils, with the coloring transported, red being on the white ground and white on the red, and all being as represented upon the escutcheon of the State seal. Heritage Violations Notify the Camp Heritage Officer compatriot Jim Stargel (jim.stargel@faa.gov) of any heritage violations. Harold E. Ford Adjutant/Treasurer Col. William Norris Camp #1398 7
