Tena koutou e te whanau, he mihi nui kia koutou katoa Next week is our annual Arts Festival. We look forward to closing all our standard programmes and immersing ourselves in these creative activities over three days. We all get a chance to celebrate those hidden talents which are so much a part of everyone s identity. Make sure you all keep the evening of Tuesday 26 September free to come along to school to enjoy our visual creations. Kia pai to mutunga wiki (Have a good weekend) Malcolm Milner Principal (Te Tumuaki) School Property There is an MoE flyer about the rebuild at the rear of this newsletter. We will load further information onto our school website. Staffing Changes The school has appointed Alex Urlich as our new music teacher. Alex in recent years has been an itinerant music teacher, relief taught at Mt. Albert Grammar and been a professional musician. We are very fortunate to be able to appoint a music teacher in the current teacher shortage. We look forward to Alex starting on Monday 1 October. Sadly, Kate Watson has resigned her role as AP (Intermediate) effective from the end of the year. We will miss Kate s knowledge of literacy, the arts and understanding of our intermediate pupils. Trish Cullen has agreed to act in the AP(Intermediate) role for We believe that this decision is in the best interest of the school and it will ensure that our curriculum development can continue. Trish has been a key leader in the development of our inquiry model, P4C and literacy with Murray Gadd. Trish has a very good understanding of the school having worked both in the primary and intermediate teams. Trish s skills and knowledge will complement our leadership team Further staff changes for the 2018 academic year. Gillian Appleby is leaving New Zealand to work in the UK, Rosalie Sinclair is leaving our school to travel and Vanessa Counsell is taking a year off in 2018 for refreshment. Carol Anne Kempster has also informed the school that she is leaving at the end of Term 1 to live in the UK. I appreciate these staff members letting us know their intentions early to ensure that we can recruit suitable people to fill their roles.
Arts Festival The Great Balmoral Artz Festival, 30 August - 1 September. In week 6 we have our annual Artz Festival, which is a tradition going back decades. For three days, everything gets put aside and the big A (Art!) is put front and centre. During this time, the kids will be doing various arty activities with their teachers or others, all working towards creating something to exhibit in our annual Art Exhibition at the end of the term. In the afternoons, we will be entertained by two Balmoral Has Talent competitions in the Hall. There will be dress up competitions each day, clowns, buskers and much merriment. We will also have our resident Artist working in the school, who the kids can see in action and talk to. Tongan, Niuean and Fijian Language Evening Thursday 7th September, 6pm -7pm Come and celebrate our nations Malo e Lelei. Bula Vinaka. Fakaalofa atu. The Balmoral Pasifika Parents Group is pleased to announce that we will be hosting Tongan, Niuean and Fijian Language Evening in the school hall from 6-7pm, Thursday the 7 th September We are encouraging all of our Tongan, Niuean and Fijian students to speak on this evening. They will be speaking in Tongan, Niuean, Fijian or English. They could be sharing something about themselves, their family, an experience, a specific part of their culture it could be anything. We want you to be there to enjoy the experience. The whole school is invited!
The Cultural Group will be performing as well and An amazing bonus to this evening an umu will being prepared at the school and served after the speeches and performances. Wow this taste experience can t be missed! Any questions please , dianeschaumkel@gmail.com or jesse@balmoral.school.nz Malo Aupito. Fakaue lahi. Vinaka. The Balmoral Pasifika Parents Group Tēnā koutou Intermediate Whānau, Intermediate News Visiting classrooms over the term, I have been really impressed by the positive attitude our children have towards their learning and school life in general. They are always excited to show me what they are doing or tell me what new things they have learned. I have seen some careful and creative problem-solving in maths and read some highly original speeches in progress. I m very much looking forward to the finals. Well done to our Mathex team who competed last night in the competition at Kohimarama. It is always an exciting, if somewhat chaotic event, combining both adept problem-solving skills and speed. Our team competed with enthusiasm! The AIMS teams have played warm-up, friendly games against AIMS teams from other schools around Auckland. Their coaches are pleased with their performances as well as team camaraderie and positivity. We are very much looking forward to the tournament in Tauranga next month. Finally, all the best to our Intermediate band Haywire who are performing in tonight s Rock Quest competition at The Dorothy Winstone Theatre (Auckland Girls Grammar School.) If you are keen to go along and support them, the doors open at 6pm, bands start at 7pm; $10 door sales. Naku noa, Kate and the Intermediate Team
Epsom Girls Grammar Enrolment 2017 Enrolment at EGGS The enrolment process for 2018 is well underway at EGGS. Thank you to the families who have lodged applications with us. This is a friendly reminder that the deadline to submit out of zone applications for the ballot is Wednesday 30 August at 4pm. Home zone applications should be submitted by then also. During this month we would like to receive applications from all eligible students so they can participate in our pre-enrolment process. Application forms must be requested through our website, please click on the following link If you have any questions about enrolment please contact the Enrolment Manager, Mrs Wendy Smith phone or by wsmith@eggs.school.nz Kind regards Wendy Smith Enrolment Manager T Shared Learning From Rooms 4 ¾ and 5 Idioms Lately Room 4.75 have been exploring the English language and some of the conventions that stand out. We have particularly enjoyed looking at idioms and creating work to illustrate our understanding these turns of phrases. Please enjoy the examples below!
Room 5 We have been preparing for the Speech Competition in Room 5 and earlier this term, we looked at persuasive techniques to help us create strong persuasive speeches. Here are two letters that aimed to persuade the reader of the writers requests. We hope you have as much fun reading them as we did writing them! Dear Gaston, You are lucky, you have no idea how lucky. Belle is a nightmare. You should ditch her before she falls for you. Firstly, when she arrived at my secret location she was very rude. She had no right to barge into my house and demand me to let her father go, I mean who does that?! In addition, she is ungrateful. When she arrived I gave her a room, I was pretty sure she didn t want to stay in the dungeon, but she still wouldn t join me for dinner. I had planned to serve the most sumptuous food in all of France and it went to waste. Furthermore, she went into the West Wing. I specifically said the West Wing was out of bounds. The West Wing is where the ros... I mean my room is, I don t think I want her snooping around my room. If you don t get over Belle, she will ruin your life as she will always be snooping. She will hate what you shoot for her to cook and she will always be reading. I am sure that after everything I have told you, you will get over Belle and leave her so I can have her... I mean so you do not live a horrible life. Yours sincerely, Beast
Meg Pinfold Room 5 Dear Sir, I am writing to persuade you why all houses should be made out of sticks and straw. There are a number of reasons that have led me to this conclusion. Firstly, the houses have natural air flow and vents and it's not healthy to not get fresh air. Also it saves money buying air conditioning when fresh air is better anyway. In addition, if you want to talk to your neighbours you don't have to leave your house, you can just speak to them through the walls. This is also a bonus if you re old or sick. Thirdly, sticks and straw houses are much easier to build and really easy to supply. Even if you are old, small and weak you can still build a house because straw and sticks are light. Lastly, it is my greatest pleasure to huff and puff and blow the houses down. I won't ever have to waste my breath on brick houses ever again. I'm sure you have considered my points and you will make sure everybody builds their houses out of sticks and straw. Yours sincerely, The Big Bad Wolf Natalie Brook Room 5 Arts Festival/Hopara Request for Coffee Capsules and Pods Do you drink coffee? Does your coffee come in a capsule or pod like the Dolce Gusto or Nespresso brands? Hiringa would love to recycle your capsules and pods. If you have any that you would happily donate, please send them to school for us. Thanks Lesley, Shire 2
