1 Meade County Extension Cooperative Extension Service Meade County 1041 Old Ekron Road Brandenburg KY March 2018 The first day of spring is March 20. So let s get moving!!! LET S GET SOME SHOES Source: Natalie Jones, Extension Physical Activity Program Coordinator; University of Kentucky, College of Agriculture, Food and Envi ronment The most important piece of equipment for any activity walking, running, hiking, tennis, basketball or aerobics is having the right pair of shoes. A properly fitting shoe can enhance performance and prevent injuries. Choosing the sport shoe that fits you best can be easy if you follow these tips: If possible, purchase shoes from a specialty store. The staff will know about the different shapes and styles of shoes to help with proper fitting. Visit the shoe store at the end of the day because your feet normally swell a bit during the day. This will help you avoid buying shoes that are too small. Make sure the shoe you pick matches the activity you plan to do. Wear the socks you normally wear when working out. If you wear orthotics, bring them along. They influence the fit of a shoe. Always try both shoes on because feet are usually slightly different sizes. When the shoe is on your foot, you should be able to freely wiggle all of your toes. Aim for a thumbnail's length of extra space in the toe box. Your heel should not slip as you walk or run. Lace up the shoes then try both left and right shoes on at the same time. Walk on a firm surface, not a carpeted one. Walk or run a few steps in your shoes. Like any product, shoes wear down over time. Here are a few signs to look for that indicate it is time for new shoes: Between 300 and 500 miles of use. Getting new or unexpected pains and blisters from shoes. Heels stretched out or broken down on the shoe. Your toes wear through the toe-box. One shoe sole has become unevenly worn, compared with the other shoe. References:

3 DOES A GLASS OR METAL BAKING DISH MAKE A DIFFERENCE? Source: Jean Najor, Senior Extension Associate, University of Kentucky; College of Agriculture, Food and Environment When choosing a pan to bake your food, the material of the pan itself makes a difference in the end product of your recipe. The material of the pan reacts with the ingredients used in the dish which may be why certain dishes you bake have unexpected outcomes. When to Use Glass Bakeware. Although glass is a poor conductor of heat, it actually distributes heat more evenly. This means that glass doesn t pick up heat quickly, but once a glass pan is hot, it will stay warm much longer outside of the oven. Use glass bakeware when making casseroles, dishes with eggs, acidic ingredients and braised dishes that will be served directly to the table. It is important to know that glass pans are NOT recommended when broiling foods since they may shatter. Do NOT use glass bakeware when broiling or shifting from the oven to the stovetop. Keep in mind that you should reduce the baking temperature by 25 degrees and check the food often as it may be ready up to ten minutes earlier if you are substituting a glass dish for a metal dish. When to Use Metal Bakeware. Overall, metals are better at conducting heat, meaning they pick up heat but can lose it again quickly. This is why cookies may burn in a glass pan as opposed to a metal sheet pan. The metal cools down faster once removed from the oven. Metal bakeware is ideal for foods that bake for a short period of time at a higher temperature. Avoid using metal bakeware with acidic or basic foods since they will react with the metal and discolor the pan and add a metallic flavor to the food. For example, do not use aluminum or cast iron for fruit crumbles, savory cobblers or tomato dishes. Use metal bakeware for quick-roasting foods and when you want browning. Reference: Roll Call: What is the favorite sign that the Spring season has arrived in the month of March? Thought/Quote of the Month: The stormy March has come at last, With wind, and cloud, and changing skies; I hear the rushing of the blast That through the snowy valley flies. 4 A message from your Extension Homemaker President... By the time you are receiving this newsletter you should be or have already received the KEHA State Newsletter. The KEHA State Meeting this year is May 7-9 at the Crown Plaza in Louisville. The meeting has been reduced to three days. Everything is being offered as in the past other than there will be no tours and some banquet meals. There are some very interesting hands-on creative classes being offered, as well as, educational seminars and officer and chairman training classes. There are so many items of interest this year that I think it will be hard to decide which ones and how many you can cram into three days. Another one of the highlights will be the opportunity to hear Miss Kentucky, Molly Matney, at the opening banquet. Even if you are unable to attend the entire three days, I encourage you to at least attend one day. The state meeting this year has been reduced to three days to cut costs associated with the meeting in hopes that many more members will be able to attend. Also, by cutting the meeting to three days it in turn cuts the cost associated with costs to the KEHA state budget. Again, this year the KEHA Quilt Square Showcase and Auction will be held. This will be the sixth year for this showcase and auction. I encourage those who are quilters and even those who have never quilted before to participate. The quilt square must be a 12 finished quilt square. Finished means piece the square, put in the batting, put on backing and finish the edges just like you would a on a finished quilt. You need to attach a small slip of paper to the back side of the quilt square with your name and county. Even if you cannot attend the state meeting please consider completing a quilt square to enter in the showcase. Recycle training in the Meade County Primary and Elementary Schools has begun. Upon completion of this training, there will be approximately 1,864 children educated about recycling in our county. Thank you: * To those who volunteered and assisted in any form or fashion with the Chamber of Commerce Luncheon in January. Due to these efforts, a net profit of $1, was contributed to the Backpack for Hunger program. * To Charlene Lawson for chairing and homemaker volunteers who helped with the Souper Supper on February 1 st. *To all homemakers and our community for their efforts. Approximately $1,600 will be utilized to purchase needed items for the Meade County Food Pantry. In addition to the monies made numerous essential food and personal hygiene items were donated by attendees at the supper. This event was a very quick turn around and all volunteers and auction contributors are to be commended for their efforts. * To Bill Pipes, for conducting our auction at the Souper Supper. His jovial spirit always makes for a great time and definite results at the auction. * To Tracy Huffines, Chair and all the recycling volunteers for taking time out of their busy schedules to complete the training and volunteer to teach this valuable information throughout the schools. * To Joyce Durbin for chairing the International Committee and her group of volunteers for planning and preparing for the yearly International Program which is being held on February 27th. This year s guest speaker will be Leoni Mundelius, KEHA International Educational Chairman and she will speak about the Philippines. * To the Town and Country Extension Homemaker Club for providing lunch to the Meade County Messenger and the Garrett Extension Homemaker Club for providing lunch to WMMG. These local businesses have continually supported our organization throughout the years. Congratulations go out to the Nite Owls Extension Homemaker Club. They have again won the membership competition this past year and were awarded a $100 check. They increased their membership by two. This year, Meade County Extension Homemakers will remain in the 3for3 KEHA state membership contest since we increased our overall membership by three. Thanks to everyone for their efforts in increasing the membership numbers. Just because we made it this year doesn t mean we can let up. Keep inviting your friends, neighbors, church members, relatives and any other person to join the Meade County Extension Homemakers. Keep up the good work and keep reminding people what a great and giving community organization we are. Let s try our best to increase our membership numbers again by at least three so that we will be able to be in the final year of the membership contest and the drawing for $500 next year.
