1 Dear Parents 1 February 2018 COURTESY comes from old French 'courteis' (12th century) and is gentle politeness and courtly manners. In the Middle Ages in Europe, the behaviour expected of the gentry was compiled in courtesy books, which not only covered basic etiquette and decorum but also provided models of sophisticated conversation and intellectual skill. In medieval India too, nobility and royalty were expected to display courteous behaviour. The concept was described by the Sanskrit word, daksinya, which meant "kindness and consideration expressed in a sophisticated and elegant way". The use of manners and courtesy towards each other is something that has always been built into our society though in this modern day we do not pore over books on manners or attend finishing schools! What has been distressing recently is the lack of courtesy that members of the Elkanah House Community have shown towards each other in the school car park. We are fully aware that the size and configuration of the car park is not ideal; but it is what we have got and therefore, as parents, you will need to show courtesy towards each other, in the car park, and to Chris our security guard even in the face of frustration! It is important to remember that the way you act will be replicated by your children they learn their coping strategies from the adults around them. Please pull into available parking spaces, even if they are far from the gate. Please do not simply pull over and wait, thereby causing a traffic jam behind you. Please yield coming in and out of the car park so that the road in front of the school does not become congested. Please remember that we are a community, and that everyone in the car park is there for the same reason. Please be courteous and kind to each other practice daksinya! 2 Parking and Traffic Congestion! A reminder: Be patient and courteous when dropping and collecting your child. If we are all considerate of one another and follow the rules of the car park ie: stop only in Drop and Go lane; pass on the right or pull into a parking bay. Sticking to these rules will make the peak pick up and drop-off traffic congestion a little easier to bear for you and our neighbours. Another suggestion is that you drop and fetch at the Builders Warehouse parking lot and your child walks the rest of the way. Alternatively arrive a little earlier in the mornings or a little later in the afternoons, in order to avoid the peak times. Enrichment - Robotics Dr Jak Tangkuampien's Robotics enrichment class have started work on an augmented reality sandbox for the Geography Department. Once completed, the AR sandbox is going to supplement the teaching of Mapwork and Physical Geography in the senior classes, and augment the school's rollout of technology as a means to engage students in the teaching and learning programme. The AR sandbox consists of a data projector that displays the contours and topographical elements of slopes and natural features by means of an Xbox and Kinect. Once completed, the AR sandbox will resemble the following : Submitted by : Michael Stanton HoD : Human and Social Sciences '
