FLANNO FEST WORKSHOP On Friday the 27 th of April the year 11 Drama class attended their very first workshop for the Flannofest Drama Festival. Throughout the rest of the term, students will be working with a theatre expert to create a Dance Theatre piece to perform at the Joan Sutherland centre on the Q theatre at the end of Term 2. Flannofest is an exciting experience that Kingswood High participates in annually, that gives students real life production and performance experience. Our first workshop was extremely fun and I cannot wait to get started and eventually perform ( Mel Yr 11)

You are invited to Come along to: Kingswood High Students will be taking a series of photographs of their suburb and members of their community. This will form a powerful portrait of a community struggling with the challenges of multiculturalism, a declining jobs market and bored youth, while still managing to retain hope and a sense of pride in this place. This project will hopefully empower local youth by encouraging awareness of their surrounding environment and more active involvement within their own community. This project is funded by Penrith City Council s Neighbourhood Renewal Grant 2012; called Magnetic Places and supported by RailCorp. Date of Show: Tuesday 8 th May to Saturday 30 th June Gallery: Kingswood Station Great Western Highway, Kingswood, NSW, 2747 Gallery opening hours: Daily 4am

The SRC held a successful Mufti Day/Crazy Hair Day last term with many students joining in the fun and showing off their inventive hairstyles. The winners for the craziest hairstyles were Jasmine Clarke and Declan Cooper. During that same week four senior students also participated in the World s Greatest Shave. Chris Roberts, Zac Lister, Kory Sonter and Aaron Hussey made the decision to sign up and raise money to help in the fight against Leukaemia. They approached the SRC, asking if they could hold the event at school. The event was a huge success, with many students making gold coin donations on the day. A special mention goes to Mr Stone who bravely volunteered on the day to have his head shaved if additional funds were raised. Both students and staff were only too happy to dig deeper to make this happen. A big thankyou goes to Dylan and Angie Blackie for their generous donation of $100. We will be holding the Addidas Fun Run again this year on Friday, 22 nd June (Week 9). This will be the second time we have run this event and it promises to be even bigger and better. We are planning an Olympic theme for this event to coincide with the Olympic year. Once again the emphasis will be on FUN. We will still run events such as the potato sack race and novelty relays,

but there will also be some exciting new novelty events. In the coming weeks, we will be sending a letter to parents with more information about the Fun Run as well as giving sponsorship forms to all students. We urge all students to get involved so that we can raise funds to improve our school hall- this is a space that we all use and therefore will benefit from any improvements that are made. If every student raised just $10 in sponsorship, that would add up to more than $7000! As an added incentive, Addidas is once again providing prizes to students who raise $10 and upward. The more money you raise, the greater the prize. Last year our highest fundraising student received an MP3 player. Other prizes included a Slip and Slide, a Bubble Machine, a basketball and much more. So get involved in helping your school, get an awesome prize and, most of all, participate in a really FUN day! Ms R. Bennett SRC Coordinator Chris Roberts, Zac Lister, Kory Sonter, Aaron Hussey

Support Swimming Carnival Report On Friday the 16 th of March, Kingswood High School held its first Support Swimming Carnival. All students participated in a range of events from competitive 50m swimming races to a range of novelty events. The wide range of events ensured that all students were able to participate, regardless of their swimming ability. The students are to be congratulated on their fine effort in and outside the pool. Particular mention has to be made to senior students, Cheyanne Robertson-Luck, Mariah Bloem and Stacey Graham who assisted swimmers with limited skills to take part in the 25m swimming events. One of the most pleasing aspects of the carnival was the level of support all students showed each other. I am sure the screaming could be heard miles away as the students cheered each other on. The overall champion for the carnival was Josh Paine-Bell. Congratulations to our Age 2012 Age Champions Champions. They should be proud of their efforts, as should all out competitors. They participated with great enthusiasm and Boys: Lachlan Montgomery demonstrated their outstanding swimming ability Girls: Nicole Hadchiti Boys: Josh Paine-Bell Our winning house on 192 points was Dinewan/Gayadari. Followed by Bohra on Girls: Larissa Falke points and Wyamba on 137 points. The carnival Boys: Corey Whittaker was a huge success. A big thank you to all the Girls: Stacey Graham students and staff, who swam, helped, cheered and of course to the most important team who cooked our delicious BBQ. Plans are already underway to make next years carnival even better!

BRING BACK THE BUSH At the end of Term 1 students in 8S and 7E participated in Bring back the Bush. This was a Great Eastern Ranges Initiative providing students with an opportunity to conserve a major concentration of Australia s plants and animals and protect them against the impact of climate change. Students went to part of the Western Sydney Parklands at Glendenning to help plant native plants, grasses and shrubs. The area already had a breeding mob of swamp wallabies, some echidnas, lace monitors and a number of Black Bittern, Silvereye, Grey Fantail and Flame Robins. With more trees it is anticipated that there will be appearances of bandicoots, gliding possums, kangaroos and more wallabies. The grass covered areas will eventually attract frogs and the natural revegetation of the parklands once established will provide protection for lizards. This vegetation corridor will also have a knock on effect with the creeks. Helping to clean the water over time and which will in turn eventually bring Kingfishers back to the area. Students had a great time, doing their bit for the environment and learning about the importance of establishing wildlife corridors. Mrs Sue Frost and Mrs Yula Morris Supervising Teacher

MATHS UPDATE I am proud of three year 8 students for successfully completing an Enrichment Program developed by Australian Mathematics Trust (Australian Olympiad Committee) during end of Term 1. Students who participated in this Enrichment program were: Jakob Grundy, Michael Meijer and Viktor Zivec. They have challenged themselves and performed really well in this program competing across Asia Pacific Region. I am also pleased with majority of students performance and commitment to learning in the classroom. I would like to extend an offer of Online Maths Program Hotmaths Program to support your child further in their studies for a subsidised price of $28 per year. If you are interested, please ask your child to contact Mrs Srinath for a note to pay at front office. Visit for a trial version of Hotmaths program. NAPLAN EXAMINATION for year 7 and 9 will be conducted on May 15 May 17. Good luck to all students.

YEAR 7 ORIENTEERING On Wednesday the 2 nd May, 50 year 7 students travelled to Knapsack Park in Glenbrook to participate in Orienteering. They were accompanied by Mr Stone and Mrs Frost. Orienteering is finding one's way across country using a detailed map, usually with the help of a compass. It involves visiting a number of locations in the bush in the correct order. These locations, called controls, are marked with orange and white flags.. At the start of the course, students were given a map on which the course is marked. Students had to find their way to each control, taking whichever route they chose. Typical route choice decisions involve deciding whether to go over or around a large hill, to follow tracks all the way in comfort, or to strike out through the forest taking a short cut to save time. Naturally most students choose different routes, tailoring the course to suit their preferences. Apart from the physical activity involved in the activity the students learnt valuable map reading, decision making and problem solving skills. A number of students across all grades will participate in the Sydney West Orienteering championships to be held on Wednesday 23 rd May. Mrs Sue Frost Geography Teacher

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are lifelong developmental disabilities characterised by marked difficulties in social interaction, impaired communication, restricted and repetitive interests and behaviours and sensory sensitivities This April was Autism month with Kingswood South primary participating in the Go Blue campaign. As a part of our community link with Kingswood South Jarrod Pace, Craig Gilbert, Mahdi Anwar, Jennifer Zuleni, Erin Jones and Kaushik Ranjan utilised their acting skills and presented a puppet show for Autism awareness. The students performed six shows at Kingswood South for the pre-school to year six students on Thursday the 28 th of March to kick start the blue campaign which all the students enjoyed thoroughly. Congratulations to these students for representing their school and participating in raising the awareness about autism spectrum disorders. rders.

ROTARY YOUTH SERVICE AWARD 2012 Congratulations to Milica Nestorovic in Year 11 who was awarded with the Rotary Youth Service Award for Kingswood High School at the end of last term at a dinner function held at Penrith RSL. Over the past 5 years Milica has been an outstanding role model to others at Kingswood High School. She has been a member of the SRC, having assumed important leadership positions such as Secretary in 2011 and President in She has shown great commitment and support to the schools humanitarian causes, assisting in organising fundraising events held at the school such as the World Vision 40hr famine and the Queensland Flood Appeal. She has participated in a number of activities in the wider community; she has raised money for World Vision through her own individual participation in the 40hr famine, is a regular blood donor, has participated in Seniors Week and has contributed to environmental sustainability. Milica is well respected by her peers and teachers and is a worthy recipient of the award for Kingswood High School. Mrs Frost Yr 11 Advisor

DANCE CAMP On the 28 th - 30 th March three year 11 dance students represented Kingswood High at the Sydney region Dance camp. Taryn Connellan, Stacey Slee and Erin Sloan all attended the two day camp where they participated in 6 workshops of different styles including ballet, contemporary, musical theatre, jazz and hip hop. Dance camp was one of the most fulfilling and memorable experiences of my life. We got the chance to participate in amazing workshops with some top industry professionals. They gave us the opportunity to learn challenging dances in a non competitive environment. I met some amazing people and formed friendships with students from other schools. I look forward to participating in the camp again in the future (Taryn). CAMDEN SHOW On Friday the 23 rd March a select group of Kingswood High School students attended the Camden Show. These students included the Targeted and elective dance group, the year 7 group and selected students from Year 8 & 10. The show displayed agricultural, horticultural, commercial and industrial resources in the Macarthur region and the students viewed various competitions and exhibitions. The students also supported our very own music and dance students as they performed on the NAB stage. All students were impeccably behaved with patrons commenting on their behaviour and the support the Kingswood High students showed for their peers and other schools. Congratulations to all students who performed; the Targeted Dance Group, Year 10 and 11 elective dance group, Connor Stevens and Ashley Thomme for their excellent vocal displays. SYDNEY DANCE COMPANY: 2 ONE ANOTHER On Tuesday the 20 th of March 2012, thirty selected dance students from Kingswood High were given the opportunity to see a Sydney Dance Company performance. The matinee performance of 2 One Another was choreographed by Rafael Bonachela and performed at the Sydney Theatre. The performance included 16 of Australia s best dancers and explored the dynamics of relationships, the beauty of the human form and human interaction. The contemporary and ballet fused style of movement was a sheer delight for many of our dance students. The Sydney Dance Company performance was a great chance to experience different kinds of contemporary dance. We all took a lot away from the experience (Melissa, Year11). Mel Tomic CAPA Teacher

A group of year 7 and 8 students went to All Phones Arena to see the stage show How to Train a Dragon. The show consisted of animatronics and a theatrical performance. The students enjoyed the show especially the fire breathing dragon and use of 3d technology. They were particularly impressed with how the actors were able to ride on the dragons and fly through the air. The show had a good underlying message of friendship, loyalty and peace. Mrs Martirena (HSIE coordinator) The How to Train your Dragon spectacular was a thrilling once in a lifetime experience that left me in awe! The show allowed us to reexperience the movie but at a whole new level. Jasmine Clarke 8O

ZOO EXCURSION I learnt that the male giraffe has more horns on its head then the male and that one type of frog can camouflage itself. The best part about the zoo was the awesome seal show and getting to see all the animals while visiting. I know that classifying animals have different features separating them apart into different groups. Mammals= Breathe through lungs, have fur and give birth live. Reptiles= usually have scales and long tongues. Birds= Have feathers and lay eggs. Fish= have scales and gills, they don t have fur and they can breathe under the water. Amphibians= lay eggs and usually live on land. They also go into water. Kayla Crimeen Group 3 What I learnt at the Zoo was that fish were the first vertebrate group on earth followed by amphibians, reptiles, birds then mammals. The best part was meeting the animals ouching them. What I know about classifying animals is you can classify a animal by it s features like an amphibian has moist skin and a reptile has dry skin. Tapiwa Chatima 7c Group 3 I learnt that when koalas are hot they cool down by laying on their backs. I also learnt about the five vertebrae groups and what nocturnal means awake at night! I also heard that bats wee on themselves to give a scent the lady bats love. Diurnal means: active during the day. Watching the seal show was the best part of my day. I know that in classifying you have to put objects into groups. Alanna Casey 7c Group 3 I learnt at the zoo koalas are quiet dangerous and reptiles don t have to eat for more than a month and koalas lay on their back to keep warm and arboreal mean lives in trees and that Flying Fruit Bats aren t related to Pigmy Bats. The best part about the zoo was

the seal show because all of the tricks they did show how smart they are and how interesting they were. They were very entertaining. Abbey Cohen 7C Group 3 At the zoo I learnt that even though they are from the same group e.g. mammals, they can be classified differently. Also, how different animals have adapted over the years. The best part about the zoo was learning stuff that I never knew about.this included seals being endangered because fishermen are catching their fish. Classifying animals is another way to help tell us that all animals are different. To classify something means to place them into groups, this helps the public learn about the animal more. Ashley Day 7A Group 2 At the zoo, I learnt that there are different types of seals. They all have different voices. The best part about the zoo was the seal show, meeting the seals and watching the tricks they can do was the most fun for me. What I know about classifying animals is that their looks and sometimes smell is different. Taylor Drury Group 2 7A

I learnt that the turtle s shell is a part of their skin, and that Red Belly Black snakes have live babies Matthew Simpkin Group 4 7N I learnt that a turtle shell is it s spine and rib cage. The best part about the zoo was the seal show. Mathew Kiworra Group 4 7A What I learnt at the zoo was cool blooded animals can t control their body temperature but mammals or warm blooded animals can control their body temperature. The best part about the zoo was the seal show and going to the education centre and patting the owl. Hamish Mellross Group 2 7A What I learnt at the zoo was that even though they are animals they are still very intelligent. I learnt that they have different strategies to use in survival. The best thing about the zoo was that we got to see the seal show. Jarvis Afualo 7N Group 1
