We also want to thank our local sponsors who generously donated or subsidized prizes: Main Crust Pizza, Lee Mt. Fuji, The Hot Glass Center, Keene Market Basket, and The Mountain for the beautiful Turkey Trot T-shirts. One last thank you goes to our new principal Mrs. Whitney who was a good sport and donned the "beautiful" Marlborough School Turkey costume to add to the festivities!

4 The Book Fair is coming to Marlborough School December 12 December 16 Senora Goodman's 8th grade Advisory has decided to take on a challenge this year. The six students (Maggie, Kirsten Mia, Will, Thomas) and Senora Goodman have decided to do their service learning project with 100Nights Shelter in Keene. doors. We would love to collect 500 rolls of toilet paper. Consider helping us out!. We hope you can start dropping of TP off as soon as possible so we can bring 100 Nights the donations by December 22. Senora Goodman's advisory was given a $750 grant through C and S wholesale to be put toward the purchase of mittens and gloves to be donated to the 100Nights Shelter. The group is working hard to continue to gather donated toilet paper to bring to the shelter on December 19th. We are so happy and fortunate to have C and S help us support our goal of helping people in our local community. Thank you C and S from Senora Goodman's 8th grade Advisory!

5 Marlborough's first ever FLL robotics team finished their season in style November 19, competing in a tournament at Bishop Brady High School in Concord. 17 teams from around the state competed at the tournament, running missions on an autonomous robot the students built and programmed completely on their own. Despite a late start to the season, the team rallied in the final week and earned the 5th highest score in the competition's robot game. After the official tournament, the team joined in a "just for fun" round robin competition between the top 8 teams. Everything worked perfectly, and the team came in second place and more than doubled their highest score from the tournament. Congratulations to the robotics team for their outstanding achievement!

6 Thank you Marlborough Rotary Club!!! The Rotary Club very generously donated dictionaries to our 3rd grade students. They are seen in the photos below learning how to use the dictionaries. They looked up words such as onomatopoeia and candy! Grade 4 students creative writers In fourth grade we have been working on our Narrative Performance Writing Task. This culminated with the students writing their own folktales, including folktale elements such as tricksters and talking animals. Here are a few blurbs from some of their stories: "Long, long, ago there lived three magical witch sisters who owned a magical store. L'Nae, the oldest, makes the spells. Alexis, the middle sister works with gold and orders. And Grace, the youngest, stocks the shelves and decorates.." - by La'Nae Profitt "So one day Autumn and James went on a hike together. It was called the Mysterious Mountain. Autumn and James didn't know why it was called Mysterious Mountain...James' backpack started to wiggle. Autumn said, "Oh no. I knew it!" The backpack jumped off of James and started to jump up the hill..." - by Kimmy Young "Cindyrella strongly dislikes her step day and step brothers. They call her Uglyrella and she gets no food. Her skateboard friends come over sometimes. However, one night her brothers got an invitation to a skateboard dance. When Cindyrella heard about this, she was so excited, but knew that she could never go..." - by Cara Smalley They did a great job of drafting, editing, revising, and finalizing their pieces. Some of these stories will be submitted to Creative Kids Magazine for possible publication!

9 The NHDI dance residency program was a great hit with our students! The culminating program was a lot of fun!!!

10 Thank you for helping us with our food drive! We brought in close to 500 food items! All of the food was donated to help those in need here in Marlborough.

11 On November 7th, the middle school Spanish classes had a guest visitor, Patty Wheeler. She is the President of Fe y Esperanza an organization that works with abandoned children in Juarez, Mexico. Senora Goodman works with her every June and takes high school students to do service projects with the 85 children and their Director at Centro Victoria. Our middle school students will be starting a service learning project in December to get to know our new friends in Jaurez, Mexico. Marlen Gostyla, came to visit our 5th grade Spanish class this month. She is of Puerto Rican descent and she came to share her Native language, Spanish, and some information about the culture of Puerto Rico. She did an informative presentation on the island of her ancestry and brought tasty treats for all of us to try. We tried guava, coconut candies, and tempique, a delicious coconut custard. The 5th grade wants to thank Sra. Gostyla for sharing her country pride with us.

13 News from ART During the first rotation, our student artists have been learning skills such as observational drawing using Contour Lines, applying One- Point Perspective to show dimension, and discovering new ways to show distance in a landscape. The primary grades created a line dictionary that we use now when we look at artwork and objects. Our focus on line turned toward shapes as the Kinders looked at how Paul Klee used geometric shapes to create a castle painting. They created a painting in a similar manner and turned their line studies into the bodies of dragons. Our 1 st and 2 nd graders discovered ways that contour lines and 1 pt perspective can help our drawings look 3-dimensional and realistic. In the elementary grades, we also learned how to apply formal perspective to our drawings to create an interior of a room or a building with more than one side. Some examples of our projects included observing the 3-d form of a pumpkin and candy corn using contour lines in our artworks. We also looked at folk artists such as Grandma Moses as we created hillside landscapes with distant buildings. The middle school students began the year creating an Initial Design, inspired by the Illuminated Manuscripts of the Middle Ages. They used their initial as the starting point and involved some aspect of who they are in the overall design. Our following projects focused on observational drawing and contour line as they drew their hands, shoes, musical instruments and parts of a skeleton. Perspective was also used to draw letters in 3-d block form. The images below show the 5 th graders Day of the Dead printmaking project which they did a wonderful job printing with foam sheets. The Kinders are seen printing with monster truck wheels as they investigate how the primary colors mix to make secondary colors. So far the art classes have worked solely on 2-dimensional projects focusing on these skills and materials. In the second rotation our students will be experimenting with three-dimensional works building with clay and constructing free standing sculptures as well.

14 Middle School breakfast time We are concerned that many of our middle school students are reporting that they do not eat breakfast and get very hungry waiting for lunch. In an attempt to ensure that all students have the time to eat breakfast we are adding a breakfast time to our middle school advisory. All middle school students will have the opportunity to go the café to purchase breakfast during advisory. The price of breakfast is $1.35 with the reduced price of $.30. Please check the school website for the menu and details for payment.
