1 The Far Post Bonneville Youth Soccer League September 2015 President s Message A letter regarding risk management was sent to all of our members in August by . However, it is important enough that I am including the letter in its entirety again: Dear Parents and Guardians of BYSL program participants, BYSL Board of Directors is actively working to increase the Risk Management resources available to coaches, parents and players and to increase our own focus on Risk Management. It is vital that there are at least two (2) adults at every BYSL activity for the protection of both our children and our volunteers. Parents, when you drop off your kids, please make sure that there are two adults present before you leave. Also, please make sure that your kids are picked up on time. If you see that a coach is going to be left with one kid when you leave the field with your own kid, please take a few minutes to get to know the coach better and wait together for the last kid s ride. Ensuring the safety of our coaches, volunteers and players, requires the action and care of all parents and responsible adults. Parents-please do not leave our coaches and players in awkward situations and help us protect all of the kids and volunteers who participate in our Programs! Dan Beck, BYSL President Beck_dan@hotmail.com BYSL Director s of Coaching Message Summer is over School has started and the YDP, U12, Jr. High, High School and College soccer seasons are underway! A few thoughts for the upcoming season Children are not young adults. Understand why US Soccer has implemented new standards for small-sided games. Include unstructured play as well as non-competitive activities in training. Promote multiple-sport participation and extracurricular activities. Encourage teamwork and team values, leadership, goal setting and sportsmanship. These attributes carry over to life off the play field. Strive to develop creative soccer players with technical skills and tactical ability to solve problems. How and Why are paramount for success. Recognize fatigue, stress and anxiety in young players. Overuse injuries can have long-term consequences. Rest is a component of training. Understand BYSL s coaching requirements and expectations in regards to concussion safety, risk management, licensing, and recruiting policies. Participate in NSCAA and USSF in-person and online certification courses and training opportunities. Coaching course costs are reimbursed by BYSL. Attend or volunteer at youth, college, or professional soccer events. New and experienced coaches alike: Enjoy the journey. Embrace the challenge. Encourage the spirit of the game and the growth of our children through a positive soccer experience. Good luck, have fun, and Thank You for supporting the soccer community. Tryouts for spring 2016 competitive teams are fast approaching. BYSL urges you to register online now. Go to byslsoccer.org and click Register. Online registration will remain open until October 29, If you do not have access to a computer or need help with online registration, you can come to the BYSL office at 410 Memorial Dr. Suite 201, Idaho Falls from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Tuesdays for assistance in registering. If that time does not work for you, please call Dan Beck ( ) to arrange another time. There is a Tryout Fee of $40.00 which you must pay at or before tryouts. The tryout fee will be refunded if your player cannot be placed on a team. If your player is placed on a team, the fee will be applied to the regular BYSL fee, the remainder of which will be collected by the team along with any club fee, which varies. If there is space on a team for your player and they choose not to play after tryouts, the $40 fee will not be refunded. When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it. Henry Ford - 6

7 WHAT TO EXPECT BYSL TRYOUTS: Players must register online (go to byslsoccer.org for the registration page) before tryouts. During the registration process, players will be able to select 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd choices for teams. At the end of the tryouts, players may change their coach preferences by going to the BYSL check-in table. (You are required to pick a minimum of two coaches.) Not everyone gets their first choice, and players who do not indicate sufficient choices will simply be placed on available teams by BYSL) Online registration will close on October 29, 2015, so be sure to register before that! If you aren t comfortable using computers or have technical difficulties in registering your player, you can come to 410 Memorial Drive, Suite 201, Idaho Falls on any Tuesday from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM for assistance. When players arrive at tryouts they must check in at the BYSL Check-In table. If the player did not pay the tryout fee online (you can pay online by credit card or echeck, or choose to pay by check), they will need to bring the $40 tryout fee with them. Coaches will be provided with a list of all players that preregistered for their use in evaluating players during the tryouts. If you do not want coaches to know your preferences prior to the tryouts, you can select I prefer to choose at tryouts as an option when you register. If you do identify coach preferences, that information will be conveyed to the coaches the morning of October 31 for their use in evaluating players. At the tryouts players will be given directions as to which teams/coaches they must attend, as it may vary depending on the number of teams available in a specific age group. Players should expect to visit 2 or more teams tryouts. The Far Post Sept 2015 BYSL Tryout Information Coaches use the tryouts to develop their list of Player Preferences. At the end of tryouts, the Team/Coach Preference forms from the players and the Player Preferences from the coaches are evaluated to match teams and players. Once a player has gone through the Tryout process (& has indicated their team preferences on the team/coach preference sheets, those players are now considered Committed and contact to/from representatives (Parents, Players, Coaches, Managers, etc.) from another team is considered Illegal Recruiting & IS NOT tolerated. CHOOSING A CLUB: Choosing a club can be challenging especially if you re new to the tryout process; however, a checklist of FAQs that a parent should consider when choosing a club is provided below. CALENDAR YEAR CHANGE: In August, 2016, US Soccer is mandating that all US Soccer affiliates, which includes BYSL, change to a Calendar Year system instead of a School Year system. It is optional whether BYSL teams adopt this change for the Spring, 2015 season. If you see a team with a 01, 02, etc. designation, that means that team is seeking players in that year (IE an 01 team is seeking any players born in 2001, whether they are currently U14 or U15). Because of the change, IYSA has temporarily suspended the restrictions on 1 year play ups, which will allow teams to stay together if they choose; however, if a team stays together, it may mean that a large number of that team s players will be playing up against older competition, which can make a significant difference if the team intends on traveling to high-level tournaments. Some teams not traveling to tournaments may decide that the competitive disadvantage of having lots of play up players is not outweighed by the advantage of keeping a group of friends together. "Praise the children and they will blossom. Irish Proverb - 7

8 The Far Post Sept 2015 BYSL Tryout Information Cont d CHOOSING A CLUB Choosing a club/team during tryouts can be a confusing process. It is wise to ask a lot of questions prior to arriving at Tryouts and needing to make a final choice. Consider your son/daughter s own goals, ambitions, and skill level. Below are some additional considerations. Interested parents can contact the Club Presidents or the BYSL Director of Coaching, whose contact s are listed on the List of Coaches above to ask specific questions regarding teams or to obtain specific contact information for coaches. 1) You want to find a team that your child has (or can make) lasting friendships. It helps to have friends on the team both in terms of enjoyment and in your ability to car pool, etc. You may want to consider how a specific team intends to address the change to a Calendar Year system. 2) You want to find a team that is at the right level of competitive soccer. Some teams are very competitive which will affect the amount of play time for each of the players, the amount of time commitment (how many games and practices per week), and the overall expense of the spring season (team fees and travel costs). Be aware that spring soccer is more expensive than fall soccer mostly due to tournament fees and traveling costs (some clubs offer partial scholarships to offset these costs). 3) Don t stress too much during tryouts, remember, they are supposed to be fun. 4) The first time you attend tryouts, it will seem hectic and slightly overwhelming. It is recommended that you arrive at least minutes early to complete your paperwork and to relax before taking the field. 5) Bring ball, shin guards, water. 6) Don t forget to PRE-REGISTER!!! QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER Here are some questions you may want to ask the different coaches at the BYSL Open House to help you decide which team (& coach) is your first, second, and third choice: (Remember to pick multiple choices.) What are your goals for the spring season? What is your coaching philosophy? How many times do you plan to meet/practice per week When will your spring practices begin? What will your team do when the Calendar System change comes into effect? What are your coaching credentials? And coaching Experience? Where will you practice? How long are the sessions? What tournaments are you planning on entering, and how many? How much travel will be involved (day trips vs overnights)? Who are your assistant coaches? Are there any additional activities for the team? What is your plan for the Indoor season? Is it mandatory? What is your plan for winter conditioning? What is your player substitution policy? Playtime? How do you manage conflicts between music/sports/church activities? Does your team play Sundays? How does the club support the team? What are your expectations from the parents? What is the expected total season cost? KICKS-N-STICKS: Sporting Goods, Soccer, Hockey, st Street, Idaho Falls, ID Opens today at 11 a.m. (closed Sundays). -- Owner: Raymundo Rodgriquez - 8
